I don't think making any barbarians playable
(Sea/Land/Animal/Autonomous_police)
Players should be players, and disasters should be disasters.

As of S2_6, we have 10 barbarian slots, of which max 3 are in use
(Sea/Land/Animal)
Making (all) barbarian nations playable is not a good idea as then player may
pick them, leading real barbarian player not getting nation.

The patch seems to work now even when reloading saved game.
As I have never done anything with translations there may probably remain some
errors here but should not prevent playing/testing.
This patch may not work without patch
Follow-up Comment #10, bug #17606 (project freeciv):
not tested yet, but i think changing no_diplomacy could work with:
reqs=
{ type, name, range
AI, Barbarian, Player
}
thus it would allow diplomacy for non-AI players (also for future versions)
but i think there may be

It seems that there is a tiny bit of a problem there.
Some rulesets (I didn't check many) have a No_Diplomacy effect with
reqs=
{ type, name, range
Nation, Barbarian, Player
}
As of now I don't see if there is some way to

What about automatically creating a war clan (technically: a nation) for each
leader (when the nation rule has flag barbarian)?
The nation name could be generated as Barbarians lead by Attila etc.
They would not be distinguishable by flags.
Follow-up Comment #7, bug #17606 (project freeciv):
i would also recommend that sea barbarians also would spawn/use ships
not only units on transports...
also it would be good to create 1 new current age unit specialy for
barbarians (i let them use marines to power-up them a bit)

Sending a Pirate spaceship to Alpha Centauri? Sounds fun :D
In such case we would need to thinka about the flags. Barbarian flags should
distinguish various barbarian from each other (Illyrian pirates should have a
different flag from Japanese

I agree with dmarks.
''-Make Barbarians and Pirates playable (grouped under 'Imaginary')''
Ok, but I propose to change the name: Barbarians = Bandits, Outlaws or
Guerillas.

From the translator's point of view, I'm not sure about Guerrillas. The
concept behind this word is similar to the Partisan (as unit type) and may
cause problem for some in some translations (as well as minor confusion in the
English version).
Follow-up Comment #1, bug #17606 (project freeciv):
That's a good idea, I've always liked barbarians :)
The question is what these barbarian players would be. I guess we need
something more specific than Pirates and Barbarians. Following this
convention we might be able to add 1-2 more players
Follow-up Comment #2, bug #17606 (project freeciv):
Here's my take:
-Make Barbarians and Pirates playable (grouped under 'Imaginary')
-Flag as sea barbarian: Viking, Illyrian, Japanese, Polynesian etc. - any
nation that has a history of piracy
-Flag as land barbarians: Visigothic, Vandalic,
Follow-up Comment #3, bug #17606 (project freeciv):
Tested it. The code currently disallows any nation being barbarian and
playable at the same time. I think this should be changed.
