Hi! There's a script that gets called from FDAUTO that tries several drivers -- why wouldn't that work? And why did it work during install? Because only the open source ones actually got installed automatically? There CD also has an ELTORITO.SYS driver it will try to use. El Torito often only works for the CD/DVD from which one has booted. If UDVD2 does not detect the drive, the controller might be AHCI. You could use AHCICD, which got open sourced after the author Rudolph Loew passed away, but unfortunately, he has not been able to update all documentation after his death, so the way in which AHCICD and his other software became open source was not accepted by this distro and you have to download things separately by hand. Re: [Freedos-user] can't see DVD reader
Make sure you have the CD/DVD-ROM driver and a MSCDEX equivalent loaded on startup. This might be happening during the installer, but might be missing out of config.sys and autoexec.bat in your installed version... There's a script that gets called from FDAUTO that tries several drivers -- why wouldn't that work? And why did it work during install? Are you saying I should throw out that script and load the driver manually? How do I know which driver to use and where it's found? I don't think that the installer is automatically adding the Cd-ROM driver and related files into the autoexec.bat/config.sys files, while the installer boots with those files. That might be something you need to add manually. There is a generic driver with FreeDOS, but in worst case scenario, look for OAKCDROM.SYS on the web, that one works with pretty much everything and then just add SHSUCDX (which is an open source equivalent for MSCDEX) for the filesystem/drive mapping Ralf ___ Freedos-user mailing list Freedos-user@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/freedos-user

And why did it work during install? There CD also has an ELTORITO.SYS driver it will try to use. For several, this driver is not included in the install process. One reason… I’ve been told this driver should only be used when booting from CD/DVD. However, some users have reported "it worked fine for me” when booting from the hard drive. So, you could try copying that to the hard drive (same location as UDVD2.SYS). The CD initialization script will notice the driver and try it if the others fail to start/work. Also, there are a couple other drivers that we cannot distribute for licensing reasons. However, they are free and easy to find online. If any of those are present the CD initialization will try those first. To see a list of what drivers are supported and the order they are attempted, run “CDROM.BAT help” :-) Jerome ___ Freedos-user mailing list Freedos-user@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/freedos-user

OK, so the cat is now awake, and I have installed a fresh copy of FreeDOS 1.3 on VirtualBox. The DVD is visible. This is weird. Re: [Freedos-user] can't see DVD reader
As I understand it, (and I'm not in front of a computer so I can't check right now) fdauto on the install disk can access the optical drive, but the files required to access the optical drive are not copied during install, and the lines are not in the fdauto file on the hard drive. I may be wrong, but as I said, I'm not in front of the computer at the moment, and the cat has fallen asleep on my lap, so I can't get up and check right now! You should look at fdauto.bat, copy and paste the relevant lines into the copy on your hard drive and copy the files it calls into the dos folder.
