No. Lower resolution would not affect a monitor. Would this be the reason for the kp's, and is there any way of setting the resolution to a higher value before the kp. No. MOnitor settings would have nothign to do with the kp This sounds like hardware. Does it do this in safe mode? Mount it in FW target mode and see what the panic logs say. G'day, and thanks Bruce. I recently oc'd my G4/400 to 450, and it is running fine. I want to add a cooling fan just the same ... perhaps try taking it to 500 under the control/watchful eye of XLR8 MACh Speed Control 3.4.2, so I can moderate the L2 cache speed. Re: APB 4 Pal: Mac Print Fax Spins Forever Without Finding (HP) Print Driver
Hiya ~ Not an expert but my first try might be to temporarily remove all the extraneous drivers from the system to give it less to look for. Maybe it'll find the one that's there for the HP printer? Other thing would be to de-install all the HP software, maybe there's a conflict occurring there between Apple's stuff and HP's stuff. As always you're trying to find out where the stoppage is (you've done this) and then try to eliminate variables until you find the problem. Good luck! On Wednesday, November 26, 2008, at 11:51 AM, MIKO's Support, Design and Development Services wrote: Hi, I've got a friend with an urgent problem because she needs to print and can't, so hopefully we can resolve the issue this morning. We thought her printer was bad but it's not- there's a problem in Apple Print Fax. She is using a 1.25 GHz 1.25mb RAM Q16 G4 15 PowerBook that was at OS 10.3.9 and she paid for me to upgrade it to Leopard for her. Leopard in general seems to work fine for her aside from this. The problem occurs with her old HP multifunction printer as well as her new HP printer. When she goes into Print and Fax to add a printer, the printers both show up as connected via USB, and it's a live reporting because if we unplug the printers from the usb, they disappear from the list of printers we can choose. In both cases she has installed the HP software first- from the HP site for the G55, from the new CD for the new printer. We also know that the HP G5 printer Gutenprint driver (for her older printer) comes pre-installed with Leopard's other HP drivers, so it's almost as if she didn't need to install the HP full river set except that she might need the scanner also. When she CHOOSES the HP printers, that's when things go weird. Normally you have to wait a second for the Print Using dropdown to pick the HP driver or, if no driver is found, it should give up and let you choose one- right? Well, the little wheel never stops spinning, the system never settles on the correct HP driver- though we know they're installed- and therefore we never even get to choose the driver ourselves. I don't really care that the system FIND the right driver- is there a way to get it to NOT look for the driver, so that we can pick it ourselves from the list? I also have had concern that with the new HP universal print driver (I think it's become that on Macs as well), the computer actually find TWP printer drivers for each printer- the exact one and the universal one- and so it just hangs for lack of being able to decide on the correct driver. Of course that could all be in my head.. Has anyone seen a problem with Print Using neither landing on a printer nor giving up? Is there a way around it? NO desire to use a generic LPR or similar workaround when the printer is fully visible to the computer via USB. Thanks in advance. You get the lot at one time then. I would not want to see this feature. My reasons: Right now, Flash (to give one example) is distributed by Apple. The vers they distribute is OLD and very buggy. This shows that Apple has little to no commitment to keeping us up to date. Heck, they couldn't even be bothered to include an up to date version of WebKit with Safari! There are some fine pre-packaged auto-update mechanisms available currently. Sparkle, used by many apps, plug-ins, etc, is one such free one. We don't need Apple interfering in what already works. Apple should be FIXING what they currently have, not crushing other developers. The other issue here is that the 3rd party add-ons are simply not ready for this Safari update. So even if Apple gave you 200+ tick-boxes for those items... it would do no good. ...I read an article the other day berating Apple for releasing Safari 3.2.1, because it was unscheduled. Geeze. If you don't release fixes in a timely fashion, the press rakes you over the coals. And if you do release them as soon as you have 'em, they rake you over the coals anyway! Re: Plastics Care
I too would recommend a Mr. Clean white pad (Magic Eraser). It's made in Germany, and I've even found identical pads in dollar stores, also made in Germany. Walgreens now has a store brand version. I've used them fairly often to remove indelible marks from computer plastic. With little effort, the plastic looks like there was never a mark on it, and there's no indication that anything was used on it. They're also good for getting things like grape juice stains off kitchen countertops. They are mildly abrasive, so use them as little as necessary. If you already have the super-fine steel wool (and no white pads), you might as well try that first. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed Low End Mac's G3-5 List, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: Further Upgrade Discussion?
I bet your disk drives are now the main bottleneck, so starting with inexpensive (but effective) changes there should give you relatively large payoffs. If you're using the original IDE controller on the motherboard, your throughput is pretty limited. Your current hard drives are probably faster than the controller's ability to communicate with them. I think the cheapest way to increase your performance noticeably would be to get a faster IDE card. (SATA is not necessarily faster than IDE.) You'd need to make sure that you don't need to boot from a drive that's connected to the motherboard's controller, but my educated guess is that this isn't a problem. Another major factor in disk speed is how fast the platters spin. Faster spin reduces latency/random access time. If your main hard drive is only 5400 RPM, see if your second drive is 7200 RPM or faster. If it is, I'd suggest putting the system and other high-use files on it. If you're still using the original hard drive, check the specs on it and think about replacing it. You can always turn it into an external drive and get more use out of it. Actually there used to be a Mac version and is still available. http://www.tucows.com/preview/204005 . You can still get all the Windows versions. Version 8 and 8.1 seemed buggy. Version 9 wasn't too bad but version 7.5 was the best and still works and flawlessly burns CD's. I believe it used Roxio's burning program. I like the way it groups complete CD's and how you can expand and collapse them. It makes the library very neat and tidy. I still use it. http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=mmatch Not exactly sure what you are talking about Ray, iTunes has about any kind of display you might want. If you are talking about a small window which displays the current song, just press the green button and the display changes to that the green button is not exactly what I was look for. Most mp3 players on a PC have a Now Playing window. iTunes might have something like that but I can't seem to find it. It's not obvious. As you play each song it automatically goes to this Now Playing window. Once you are finished you can burn from that auto generated playlist, although if you want to save it, you have to drag it over and save it as a playist. MediaMonkey has been my favorite mp3 for awhile now. My favorite still to this day is MusicMatch 7.5. This was MusicMatch peak, it went downhill from there, in my opinion. MusicMatch 7.5 lacked some important features like CD-text I think I understand what you are talking about now, but no, I don't know if iTunes can do that unless there is an Applescript available to do it. DO NOT GET A USB WIRELESS CARD. THEY SUCK. ok maybe not if you have usb 2.0. I got an airport extreme compatible card for my Lombard (the model back from the pismo) and it is fast and if fits in the PCMCIA slot so it's out of the way as opposed to usb. I paid $20 on ebay for it. What wireless cards will work, and are there any good ones at a moderate price? The old Buffalo G54 802.11 b/g cards would work, but they're getting hard to find. This Belkin card uses the same chipset and is recognized by 10.3 and 10.4: http://www.wegenermedia.com/belkincard.htm More models and links in this Apple support forum thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2804141 Best, Allison P. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed Low End Mac's G3-5 List, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs.
