Re: [Audyssey] Hi Dark

2012-01-23 Thread dark

Hi jim.

Well i suppose if you've sort of got a mental picture of games with 80's
graphics even when your making audio games that makes sense, however for
myself sinse audio games don't have graphics, I don't think of them as
graphical, - well there are my coloured synaesthesic impressions of in
game objects, but that's a little different.

Just as ytou wouldn't have a synth voice playing a human character in an
audio drama, to me the same rule applies in a game.

For status info, game menues etc synth is fine, sinse that's just extra
info, but for atmosphere and characterization I'd always go with a human.

In fact Jim this is sort of what you did in your games featuring homer
simpson. You've stuck in phrases like you dbig dumb balling ape etc, to
make the character realistic, where as you've stuck to sapi just for things
like in game instructions and data, even if you didn't do this for some of
your other titles.

Hope this makes sense.

Eitherway it does seem a shame to me to miss out on a game because it uses
synths or sapi, and I'd certainly not refrain from playing a game just
because of that.

Beware the grue!

Hi charles.

I agree, but Funnily enough I'm the opposite way around with synths,
but being english I would be.

I have no care whether the letter R is pronounced, but do like long A's and
short o's, --- -indeed with the English pronunciation of hot you could never
mistake it for heart simply because the O is shorter and deeper. That is why
i use orphius Alan as my main Hal voice, and realspeak daniel as my sapi
voice.

Re: [Audyssey] X Hour?

2012-01-23 Thread dark

Hi milo.

In a recent mail, apparently Vip gameszone have had trouble converting the
game to run on windows 7, so they no longer directly sell it from their
site.

Apparently though they are reworking the game to both run on windows 7 and
have some upgrades (I certainly hope they add some voice acting sinse that
was a game that really suffered from too many synths).

So no, it is not free currently, indeed if you download the demo and run it
on xp it'll stil work fine and you could probably stil buy it if you
contacted vip gameszone.

Hi eleanor.

nice list indeed, it's particularly good to see some sites like driftwood
and Aprone's get a mention as they deserve.

There are however a couple of points.

firstly, Paulosoft, the makers of airik the clerric have changed their name
and their site to www.breakerbox.games. com. they have also (as of december
of last year), released another game, a cartoon 3D cutesy spy adventure
called Curt wolf which has graphics and mouse control but is also fully
audio accessible. I haven't tried it yet myself, but it sounds awsome. so
you might want to either change that entry, or at the least update the link
so that people don't get a 404.

Also, though Blind adrenaline itself in terms of it's site and rail racer
haven't been updated sinse 2009, work goes on constantly on the cardroom
with weekly tournaments and other events. Just this year Yacht, the game
best known as Yahtzee was added, along with the omahar varient of Texus
holdem poker. i also think Spades was added earlier in the year too. So it
is in a very different state to say Draconis that really hasn't! shown any
life sinse 2009.

then, Nielsbauer actually have two acessible games, sinse smugglers 3 is
also accessible. They are however tyring to get interest in their Empires
and dungeons game, and if they get enough from the eyeball defficient
community they will make an access mode for it, so you might want to put a
more prominant announcement on there.

Lastly, not that it particularly matters, but the audiogames.net db is
actually up to 392 games now, though sinse that'll probably be going up this

week as I add some pages that isn't a major factor, I just thought I'd
mention it :d.

I'm actually looking forward to the big 400, which hopefully should be soon.

Beware the grue!

 Hi gamers

Our Top 25 Lists for 2012 have been published. In response to the
comments made on Audyssey, we revised our criteria and have added a
listing of online games. Although we don't feel we can adequately rank
them, we listed them in one location so people who want to try online
games can know where to go.

The ranking criteria can be found at the end of the page. We adhere to
the criteria, and where it appears that a website is not in the order you
would expect, try to explain the reason they are in that location. It is

I thought I would play the game to see what would happen if I complete the

Re: [Audyssey] 2012 Top 25 List for Gamers who are Blind

2012-01-23 Thread dark

Hi Darren.

this was discussed back when they were listing sites. The problem with
adapted online games is that there are now many of them with labled stuff,
and if we added Ce we'd have to add every game that had made access changes.
Warriors 2, Sryth, KoL, chronicles of arborell and probably a hole bunch
more, not to mention muds like new worlds ateraan, materiamagica and avatar
that have some degree of Vi adaptation (though perhaps not as much as in
Alteraeon).

While I agree ce is great and coops has done a good job with adaptation,
where this falls in a list such as 7-128's I don't know.

Hi eleanor.

nice list indeed, it's particularly good to see some sites like driftwood
and Aprone's get a mention as they deserve.

There are however a couple of points.

firstly, Paulosoft, the makers of airik the clerric have changed their
name
and their site to www.breakerbox.games. com. they have also (as of
december

of last year), released another game, a cartoon 3D cutesy spy adventure
called Curt wolf which has graphics and mouse control but is also fully
audio accessible. I haven't tried it yet myself, but it sounds awsome. so
you might want to either change that entry, or at the least update the
link

so that people don't get a 404.

Lastly, not that it particularly matters, but the audiogames.net db is
actually up to 392 games now, though sinse that'll probably be going up
this

week as I add some pages that isn't a major factor, I just thought I'd
mention it :d.

I'm actually looking forward to the big 400, which hopefully should be
soon.

It is
a lot of work, but we feel we add value in our analysis of the sites and
their offerings as well as giving you an easy way to get directly to the
best sites for gamers who are blind.

Please check the list out at our website, www.7128.com and select the Top
25 button at the bottom of the page. Enjoy!

2012-01-23 Thread Jorge Gonçalves

Hello everyone.
Just wanted to let you know that today it was presented a new fresh game
developped specially for the blind.

It was developed by a brazilian developer who's name is Tiago Arthur Cunha.
it's in portuguese only by he plans to make foreign translations.
It is a football (soccer= management game:
you are a manager of a football team and yu choose players to play,
tactics, watch the match, sell players etc.
I am very happy because since years I knew a lot of blind people in the
world would love to have a football game and here it is.

I am happy that Tiago did that.
The first version is freeware but I think he will charge for the next
versions. I will be the first one to purchase it.
The game's name is Talkative Soccer and if you understand portuguese the

[Audyssey] Blast Buddy

2012-01-23 Thread Jeremy Kaldobsky
I know this isn't a game, per se, but I was messing around with a little BGT
IDE. The program, affectionately named Blast Buddy, is meant to work a lot
like notepad but have features that will help BGT developers code. I still
have plenty of things I could add, but it's working well enough that I figured
I'd toss this here to get some early feed back. The readme file explains its
features, but since 90% of people won't read it I will paste it here right
after the download link.

http://www.kaldobsky.com/audiogames/Blastbuddy.zip

Added in version 0.2: Undo and Redo features using ctrl+Z and ctrl+Y. There
is a maximum of 10 undos so please let me know if you'd like it allow for
more. I've done some testing but I would like to hear from anyone who spots
any bugs with it.

Blast Buddy
---
by Aprone, developed with Philip Bennefall's BGT in mind.

The program should operate very similar to windows notepad with only a few
changes meant to help developers. For starters, when you leave a line, Blast
buddy will check it for some common errors. At the moment it only checks for 2
types, forgetting quotes or forgetting the semi colon at the end of a line that
needs it. In either case, the program will beep and speak the estimated error
to help you catch it before moving on.

Think of your program as existing on a set of tiers or levels. On the bottom
most tier zero, you have your include statements and functions. Your functions
become tier 1 and the lines of code within them are on this tier. If you have
a block IF or loop inside of your function, this would become tier 2 along with
the code inside of it. Nested statements can continue branching out into
higher and higher tiers. One of the most difficult things about programming
can be keeping track of these tiers and knowing when they end.

Blast buddy has a way to use these tiers to simplify things. Use Alt + Page up
and page down to filter your code based on tiers. When set to all, every
line of your code appears. When set to tier zero, the normal up and down
arrows would only be seeing your lowest tier code such as include statements
and functions. Moving up to tier 1 would expand that a bit more. This can be
a quick way to overview what you're working on, without needing to scroll
through 40 lines of code nested within an IF block. Sometimes all you need to
read is the line saying If (age == 18) and you already know this is now the
place you wish to add more code. I can't say for sure, but I hope this ability
to condense or expand the view will help developers with speed and also with
viewing their project in a more managable way.

Another interesting filter method is the comments setting. Alt + Page down
will lead you to this setting right below all. When in this mode, the only
lines that will show up are the ones where you have written comments. If you
are someone who comments sections, dropping down to this view could be the
absolute fastest way to shrink your code down into an easy to understand
format. Once you find the spot you're looking for, simply expand your view and
continue working as normal.

This was thrown together pretty quickly so there are some things that probably
won't work quite right, and a few things I still mean to add. You can't
highlight multiple lines for the purpose of copying and pasting. Line numbers
aren't displayed anywhere. You can't use a find or replace feature. And
finally, soft background tones of different pitch will eventually play as you
move up or down in tiers. This will hopefully make it much easier to visualize
where you currently are in the code.

I intend to add support for more types of checks. It would be nice for Blast
buddy to check for case and spelling errors in the BGT key words. It would
also be neat for Blast buddy to track the variables names you use, to catch you
if you spell one incorrectly later on during your coding. I'm not sure what
all will be done with this, but it is fun to brainstorm.

I think this is a fantastic initiative. Thanks, Jeremy! I've only looked at

Subject: [Audyssey] Blast Buddy

I know this isn't a game, per se, but I was messing around with a little BGT
IDE. The program, affectionately named Blast Buddy, is meant to work a lot
like notepad but have features that will help BGT developers code. I still
have plenty of things I could add, but it's working well enough that I
figured I'd toss this here to get some early feed back. The readme file
explains its features, but since 90% of people won't read it I will paste it
here right after the download link.

http://www.kaldobsky.com/audiogames/Blastbuddy.zip

Added in version 0.2: Undo and Redo features using ctrl+Z and ctrl+Y.
There is a maximum of 10 undos so please let me know if you'd like it
allow for more. I've done some testing but I would like to hear from anyone
who spots any bugs with it.

Blast Buddy
---
by Aprone, developed with Philip Bennefall's BGT in mind.

The program should operate very similar to windows notepad with only a few
changes meant to help developers. For starters, when you leave a line,
Blast buddy will check it for some common errors. At the moment it only
checks for 2 types, forgetting quotes or forgetting the semi colon at the
end of a line that needs it. In either case, the program will beep and
speak the estimated error to help you catch it before moving on.

Think of your program as existing on a set of tiers or levels. On the
bottom most tier zero, you have your include statements and functions. Your
functions become tier 1 and the lines of code within them are on this tier.
If you have a block IF or loop inside of your function, this would become
tier 2 along with the code inside of it. Nested statements can continue
branching out into higher and higher tiers. One of the most difficult
things about programming can be keeping track of these tiers and knowing
when they end.

Blast buddy has a way to use these tiers to simplify things. Use Alt + Page
up and page down to filter your code based on tiers. When set to all,
every line of your code appears. When set to tier zero, the normal up and
down arrows would only be seeing your lowest tier code such as include
statements and functions. Moving up to tier 1 would expand that a bit more.
This can be a quick way to overview what you're working on, without needing
to scroll through 40 lines of code nested within an IF block. Sometimes all
you need to read is the line saying If (age == 18) and you already know
this is now the place you wish to add more code. I can't say for sure, but
I hope this ability to condense or expand the view will help developers with
speed and also with viewing their project in a more managable way.

Another interesting filter method is the comments setting. Alt + Page down
will lead you to this setting right below all. When in this mode, the
only lines that will show up are the ones where you have written comments.
If you are someone who comments sections, dropping down to this view could
be the absolute fastest way to shrink your code down into an easy to
understand format. Once you find the spot you're looking for, simply expand
your view and continue working as normal.

This was thrown together pretty quickly so there are some things that
probably won't work quite right, and a few things I still mean to add. You
can't highlight multiple lines for the purpose of copying and pasting. Line
numbers aren't displayed anywhere. You can't use a find or replace feature.
And finally, soft background tones of different pitch will eventually play
as you move up or down in tiers. This will hopefully make it much easier to
visualize where you currently are in the code.

I intend to add support for more types of checks. It would be nice for
Blast buddy to check for case and spelling errors in the BGT key words. It
would also be neat for Blast buddy to track the variables names you use, to
catch you if you spell one incorrectly later on during your coding. I'm not
sure what all will be done with this, but it is fun to brainstorm.

Re: [Audyssey] Blast Buddy

2012-01-23 Thread Jeremy Kaldobsky
Thanks Philip! I wouldn't be surprised if it was some sort of bug, but it
might also just be a misunderstanding about how those tiers work. When set to
level 2 you should be able to see the main function calls such as void main
since those are tier zero. Tier 1 would be the code within functions, but it
would exclude the insides of any loops or block ifs. Tier 2 should include the
code inside of your lowest level loops and block ifs, but won't include any
loops or blocks inside of those blocks. It's possible that the code you're
viewing just doesn't have any, or many, tier 2 lines of code. here is a little
example to help illustrate how it would work. The line void main is tier
zero.

void main()
{
alert(Hello, I am part of tier 1);
if (1+1 == 2) {
alert(Hello, I am part of tier 2);
if (2+2 == 4) {
alert(Hello, I am part of tier 3);
}
if (3+3 == 6) {
alert(Hello, I am also part of tier 3);
if (4+4 == 8) {
alert(Hello, I am part of tier 4);
}
}
}
}

I think this is a fantastic
initiative. Thanks, Jeremy! I've only looked at the program
briefly but I like the navigational concepts. I seem to be
able to navigate all over the code despite my having set it
to level 2, but maybe I'm doing something incorrectly. I'll
be continuing to mess with this, and perhaps we can work

little BGT IDE. The program, affectionately named Blast Buddy,
is meant to work a lot like notepad but have features that will
help BGT developers code. I still have plenty of things I could
add, but it's working well enough that I figured I'd toss this
here to get some early feed back. The readme file explains its
features, but since 90% of people won't read it I will paste it
here right after the download link.

http://www.kaldobsky.com/audiogames/Blastbuddy.zip

Added in version 0.2: Undo and Redo features using ctrl+Z and
ctrl+Y. There is a maximum of 10 undos so please let me know
if you'd like it allow for more. I've done some testing but I
would like to hear from anyone who spots any bugs with it.

Blast Buddy
---
by Aprone, developed with Philip Bennefall's BGT in mind.

The program should operate very similar to windows notepad with
only a few changes meant to help developers. For starters, when
you leave a line, Blast buddy will check it for some common
errors. At the moment it only checks for 2 types, forgetting
quotes or forgetting the semi colon at the end of a line that
needs it. In either case, the program will beep and speak the
estimated error to help you catch it before moving on.

Think of your program as existing on a set of tiers or levels.
On the bottom most tier zero, you have your include statements
and functions. Your functions become tier 1 and the lines of
code within them are on this tier. If you have a block IF or
loop inside of your function, this would become tier 2 along with
the code inside of it. Nested statements can continue branching
out into higher and higher tiers. One of the most difficult
things about programming can be keeping track of these tiers and
knowing when they end.

Blast buddy has a way to use these tiers to simplify things. Use
Alt + Page up and page down to filter your code based on tiers.
When set to all, every line of your code appears. When set to
tier zero, the normal up and down arrows would only be seeing
your lowest tier code such as include statements and functions.
Moving up to tier 1 would expand that a bit more. This can be a
quick way to overview what you're working on, without needing to
scroll through 40 lines of code nested within an IF block.
Sometimes all you need to read is the line saying If (age ==
18) and you already know this is now the place you wish to add
more code. I can't say for sure, but I hope this ability to
condense or expand the view will help developers with speed and
also with viewing their project in a more managable way.

Another interesting filter method is the comments setting. Alt +
Page down will lead you to this setting right below all. When
in this mode, the only lines that will show up are the ones where
you have written comments. If you are someone who comments
sections, dropping down to this view could be the absolute
fastest way to shrink your code down into an easy to understand
format. Once you find the spot you're looking for, simply expand
your view and continue working as normal.

This was thrown together pretty quickly so there are some things
that probably won't work quite right, and a few things I still
mean to add. You can't highlight multiple lines for the purpose
of copying and pasting. Line numbers aren't displayed anywhere.
You can't use a find or replace feature. And finally, soft
background tones of different pitch will eventually play as you
move up or down in tiers. This will hopefully make it much
easier to visualize where you currently are in the code.

I intend to add support for more types of checks. It would be
nice for Blast buddy to check for case and spelling errors in the
BGT key

This was just posted: Really saddened about this, super egg hunt plus was

turning out to be quite interesting.

For over ten years I have been writing computer games for the visually
impaired. during that time I have met a lot of great people who have
enjoyed what I do. I'm proud to saythat I produced some excelent games
that people enjoy to this day. However, my work and personal commitments

keep me from being able to put the time in that is required to continue
 development.

As of now I will no longer be producing any future titles. All the
current games on l-works.net will still be supported and I will honor
requests for unlock codes. People may still purchase games if they
haven't done so already, but there will be no updates or work done.

I feel honored to have met so many wonderful people and to have been able

to give back to a wonderful community who has been extremely appreciative

and supportive of my games. Thank you. Your support has meant a lot to me

over the years. Most of all, thank you for enjoying my games. if people
didn't play them, I would have never wanted to continue to make them.

Re: [Audyssey] Blast Buddy

2012-01-23 Thread Jeremy Kaldobsky
Well I discovered why Philip was able to see all of the lines even while
filtering based on tiers. I had broken it while trying to rearrange a few
lines of code. So the good news is that it should be fixed now.

The current uploaded version is 0.4, and the one I just uploaded lets you use
ctrl + L and ctrl + T to turn on line numbers or spoken tiers. I have no idea
if it is set up in the nicest way, so I'd appreciate feedback from people using
it with their screen reader. I have no idea if the spoken line numbers or tabs
will blend together with the actual code of the line. I also am still planning
to put background tones to indicate the current tier, and when I add that it
probably won't have to speak it as a number anymore.

Chris it never did give me any trouble, so I'm hoping it was just an issue with
the older version you were running at the time. Please let me know if you
still have that error when you open your file with a newer copy of Blast Buddy.

I too am excited about where this
could go.  If Jeremy and Philip were to
work together, I could see this becoming the first
 programming IDE developed
from the ground up with blind programmers in mind.

Jeremy, did you ever figure out why my file was producing a
 runtime error on
 opening?

As for additional features, I would like to see line
 numbers as an option.

Well, I just downloaded the Terraformers game and to my suprise it is free!
Just download the game and install it. If you go into the chick
license it will say demo, but pay no attention to it.
I thought I would play the game to see what would happen if I
complete the training level and I like what happens! Back when you
had to paid for the game the demo would stop after completing the
training level, but now when you complete the training level it
plays just like if you had paid for the game!

The website to the Terraformers home page is.
www.terraformers.nu
That is the official site created by pininteractive.

yeah, but judging that after last years crash I havn't recieved my
jd unlock code for ages I figured that liam was bussy.
Its a pitty he had to go, but at least he honours his customers and
will give out codes to them as well as allow us to buy his games.

I have seen companies that go and leave their stuff in an unknown state.
Eventually the games are cracked and everyone gets them, but having
an unknown status doesn't feel finalised to me.
I remember last year that after a crash I sent a unlock replacement
for jd, but never got one, I also sent a support message to liam
asking him if he needed any assistance with keys.

he used to broadcast on the net.
Although random and not archived somewhere your broadcasts funny and
witty as they were will bee dearly missed, even though there are
games and other stuff better than your own, you were one of the first
old tyme classic devs in the day.

May you prosper and such.

About half the time when I go to post something on the blast bay forum, my

not a screen reader issue. I've experienced similar behavior occasionally

That's definitely unusual. In my case listening to some of the
synthetic voices for a long stretch drives me up the wall. The less
human the voice like Eloquence or ESpeak the more irritating I find
it. I guess I've adapted to Eloquence and ESpeak, as I use them all
the time with NVDA, but the more human voices like the ATT voices are
definitely preferable in terms of human quality. I find games that use
human voices for menus, status messages, much better.

Hi Charles,

Yeah, that is a personal preference thing. I remember originally when
I designed MOTA I used Real Speak Caren because I love her voice and
Australian accent. However, you and a couple of others requested a
strict American female which I did. Although, I like Heather I still
think Caren sounds better, and its just a case of preference.

I can't remember which word it was but you e-mailed me and asked me
what Caren said. Wasn't it something like dart and you thought she
said dot?

I think I've listened to that voice so much I have grown accustom to
the accented words, gotten use to hearing shedule instead of schedule,
etc that would throw the average American off.

Cheers!

Oh, I like the U.K. version of Eloquence as well. I like to leave it

the things that bothers me about the wrestling game I'm working on is
commentary.

Right now any time you perform a move SAPI acts as a ring side
commintator. Ok, it works, but I can't get into it. I'd prefer a human
to actually call out the moves rather than SAPI.

Cheers!

used for actual characters unless, and that being the key word, they
happen to be robot or computer characters. To be qite frank tat's
probably the biggest reason I can never manage to maintain my interest

Hey thanks for that, I'll probably be using this a lot. Though we
really need to be able to select multiple lines. *grin* I've tried
this with a few of my games and since I always comment esctions this
works like a charm. thanks

Well I discovered why Philip was able to see all of the lines even while
filtering based on tiers. I had broken it while trying to rearrange a few
lines of code. So the good news is that it should be fixed now.

The current uploaded version is 0.4, and the one I just uploaded lets you
use ctrl + L and ctrl + T to turn on line numbers or spoken tiers. I have
no idea if it is set up in the nicest way, so I'd appreciate feedback from
people using it with their screen reader. I have no idea if the spoken line
numbers or tabs will blend together with the actual code of the line. I
also am still planning to put background tones to indicate the current tier,
and when I add that it probably won't have to speak it as a number anymore.

Chris it never did give me any trouble, so I'm hoping it was just an issue
with the older version you were running at the time. Please let me know if
you still have that error when you open your file with a newer copy of Blast
 Buddy.

I too am excited about where this
could go.  If Jeremy and Philip were to
work together, I could see this becoming the first
 programming IDE developed
from the ground up with blind programmers in mind.

Jeremy, did you ever figure out why my file was producing a
 runtime error on
 opening?

As for additional features, I would like to see line
 numbers as an option.

Re: [Audyssey] blastbay forum appears to be freezing my IE8.

2012-01-23 Thread Philip Bennefall

Hi again,

I have now cleaned out about 6000 spam bot accounts from my forum. And,
wonder of wonders, the lag is gone.

Kind regards,

Hi Chris,

It may be that the database is getting overloaded with unapproved spam bot
registrations. I will have a look and see if I can clean that up during the
day tomorrow. I've noticed it being a bit slow too, though never more than a
couple of seconds on this end.

Kind regards,

Philip Bennefall

About half the time when I go to post something on the blast bay forum, my
browser completely freezes. This is happening with NVDA and JFW, so it's
not a screen reader issue. I've experienced similar behavior occasionally
from the audiogames.net forum site.

Anyone know what's going on?

Re: [Audyssey] Terraformers

2012-01-23 Thread dark

Hi nicole.

once you get past the training level, the layout is fairly simple. you go
through a streight passage to a place withe terminal, with exits right and
left.
Listen to the message in the terminal then choose a left or righth direction
to go first. Both directions on the east or west have challenges to get
through in order to collect a part for the computer, and you'll have to get
both.

this is how each area of the game is laid out, like several doughnuts with a
terminal on the north and south side, and a challenge to do for the computer
parts on the east or west sides.

As for the challenges, none are too hard, if I remember rightly on the right
you need to collect some sound sources then run round a room and match them
with some other sound sources to activate cannons to destroy a robot, while
on the left there are three tone wheels and a sound flower that makes a
noise to tell you what the tone wheels should be set to.

Energy isn't a problem sinse there are refill stations all over the place,
just keep track of what your energy is and head back to a refill point if it
looks low.

Beware the grue!

Dark.
