[Audyssey] Choiceofgames available to play in windows and mac

2014-05-04 Thread dark
Everytime choiceofgames have been mentioned previously, someone has asked if
they're available in windows.

Well good news, they are now!

I'm just learnt that as well as being available to buy from the chrome web or
apple ap stores for your favourite mobile device, you can also buy the games
directly from the site with a credit card and account system (though this
apparently requires cookies).

previously the only way to play the games on a windows machine was to buy them
from the google chrome store, and play them in chrome, sinse chrome is not a
particularly accessible alternative this caused problems if you didn't have
access to Ios or android.

Well I'm pleased to say that has changed, and now you can buy the games
directly from the choiceofgames site and play in whatever browser you want.

Just go to where it says play online on the site and use the buy game
button to setup an account and pay via credit card, though apparently it does
require cookies to save your game.

Hope people enjoy this, I've had fun with these games on my Iphone and I have
always thought it's a shame that they've never been available on windows,
though of course sinse they will run in any browser I'd assume they're playable
on mac as well.

And before someone asks the choiceofgames site can be found
http://www.choiceofgames.com/

Re: [Audyssey] Choiceofgames available to play in windows and mac

2014-05-04 Thread Milos Przic

Hi Dark and all,
I am not sure how their system works. I played their few free titles and the
demos of more of the paid ones, and wanted to buy them. I saw that they are
plaid in Chrom and waited to buy an androi phone and did it, but as I was
learning I didn't buy anything yet. Now that they are available in windows,
I decided finally to buy them to play on Android and on Windows too, but my
main question is, is it possible to buy a game and play it on boath
platforms? If so, how does it work if the account you make on the site for
Windows version is not your google account?
Also, once baught, do you have to be connected to the internet to play, or
you can play offline?

Thanks in advance and best regards!

Re: [Audyssey] Choiceofgames available to play in windows and mac

2014-05-04 Thread dark

Hi milo.

not as far as I know. Just like lots of developers who produce games for
multiple systems, you choose which system you want the games on and need to
buy them for that system. So if you buy them from the website, you play them
online on the choiceofgames site but won't get them on your android phone.

I've not played the games on android, but certainly on Ios I do not need a
net connection to play them, they are just programs downloaded on my Iphone.
This indeed is likely why I will probably not be buying the games online and
will continue to buy the Ios versions sinse I prefer the availability of
having them on my phone than always needing to be online on the
choiceofgames site to play them, plus of course I get automatic saving on my
Iphone,
though if I didn't have an Iphone I probably would buy them from the site
instead.

All the best,

Dark.

[Audyssey] Choice of games accessibility on android?

2014-05-04 Thread Milos Przic
Hi all,
I downloaded the Choice of Broadsides to experiment a little with a free title
before I buy something, and am not sure if one can actually play using
talkback. I read the screen without problems, but a double click on the Next
Button when I swipe to it doesn't work, so I can't pass the first screen. When
I try to find the buttons by touching and not by swiping, I can't find
anything...
Does anyone have experience with these games on Android?
Thanks to all in advance, and best regards!

Re: [Audyssey] Emailing social point

2014-05-04 Thread Shaun Everiss
charles while I aggree with you, firstly the big companies couldn't
give a hoot about us.
Thats why we probably get away with the semi alegal sound usage we
get away with especially in free games.

Most don't know about the disabled or don't give a frog about it.
The smaller devs unless they have an interest or the cash and a lot
probably don't either really can't fund such a small market such as
the disabled.

It all depends on what level the game is done for.
A heavily text oritentated game like eamon or an rpg writen in a
flashy graphic window could be made accessable at little cost.

A huge game with loads doing it could cost a bit more.
One way I think we can get over this is to have people that can make
frontends and either get permition to modify game sources or have
games with the ability of modding.
Since a lot of games have downloadable content or dlc then there is a
possability the game can be hacked / modded in fact the engines to
mod are either included free or at low cost to mod.
Most games for the pc I know of at least a few maybe even more then
half of them are moddable there is not really many closed games with
no modding avalible.

Ofcause inaccessable menus are another thing and thats only pc related.
in the smart phones like i phone or android its another kettle of
fish with development programs quite pricy so I hear.

Even then its not a lost cause.
the web, flash and the cloud is really getting traction, games that
can be played whenevver and where ever the user wishes are becoming
more and more desireable.
Finally there are consoles, while ms may allow some work with their
xna framework, though you have to give them your rights to run the
games its still possible though xna is not blind friendly.

I am not sure about nentendo or soni but there is a lot of buts there.
It may never be that the real big shakers see potentual in us maybe a
few smaller devs at a time who knows.

I have seen a change from blind games.
While the audiogames stuff has stayed quite static and stable for a
while I have seen a lot more smaller games and bigger text rpgs out
there as well as stratogy games.

To be honest more people mailing them won't make much difference
and might even irritate them. I would recommend you try notifying
them of the work A sharp have done and the podcast made by the
developer of A Dark Room on accessibility modifications and how
easy those are to add, sinse many sighted developers believe that
access in their games means a complete redesign where for Ios at
least it often can be done more easily.

If however they have said not, odds are they won't change their
minds, indeed I'm surprised you got a reply rather than the usual
simple ignoring.

I'd recommend just changing games and supporting developers who do
care about access sinse unless it was a legal requirement some
developers just wont' do it, and your better off expending your
efforts on those who will.

I had a similar experience earlier with starbase orion, and would
now urge everyone who is interested in scifi stratogy on the Iphone
to go and buy startraders elite instead of wasting time with the
scumbag who makes starbase orion and has flat out refused to add access.

Hi was just wondering if this list would be interested in helping
me get social point to make Monsters legends and Dragon city
accessible amongst some of their other games that they make. I
downloaded both games the other day and found out that they're
somewhat accessible but you still can't get past the beginning
tutorials. I emailed them and ask them if they would be willing to
make their games accessible and they told me that that was not a
path that they were thinking about going down in the near future
so I was going to see if I could get more people to email them. It
would actually be nice to be able to play a game everybody else on
my Facebook page plays.

If you mean a link to the podcast where the creator of Dark room talks about
access in the game, you can hear it on

actually I'd recommend having a listen anyway, the story of the developers
decision to make the game is a very interesting one.

Regarding getting some of the games with larger player bases accessible,
well the problem as I said is that generally as the saying goes the bigger
the ant hill the bigger the stink. This is why the storm8 games like
vampires live have had no fix to make the id system accessible, and why
haypy monster has had no fixes for the chaotic interface or very random
lables, sinse while not made by mainstream developers the companies are
pretty big and it's not generally possible to individually talk to the
developers.

Of course this isn't to say it's entirely impossible. There are cases where
the game is mostly accessible but requires say some labeled images where
even larger indi companies have been helpful. Two particularly good
examples of this are Kingdom of loathing and torn city. Both are pretty big
games, big enough to make the newspapers and be reported in innumerable
other media, but because they're text based browser mmorpgs, the access
basically involved correct image lables and in the case of Torn city, an
audio capture (and this one is actually perfectly understandable).

So, it's certainly worth a try, albeit I tend to think your better off with
companies where you can actually speak to the developers themselves, like
trees brothers who make startraders elite.

As regards how, well the first thing is be extra polite, considder it a
formal letter that you are writing to a company. As such use any correct
titles or information you can. I for example always sign my letters Dr.

. Make sure you clearly state what access fixes you want, eg, please leable
the equipment buttons, and lastly don't bug developers. I can think of at
least one case where a developer was highly interested in access and a
certain person basically mailed them every day asking for fixes to be made.

Hth and good luck.

sent me. I want to know how to do this right because I would like to get
some games that more than just a few people play accessible. Games like
LordsKnights and Solara are fine but it just doesn't seem like they have
the player base that some of these other games do.

Today, Choice of Games is proud to announce two new
games. First, NOLA Is Burning, the latest in our popular “Choice of Games” line
of multiple-choice interactive-fiction games, is now available for iOS,
Android, and, via the Chrome Web Store, Windows, OS X, and Linux.

Second, we’re announcing that Choice of the Rock Star
is now available for iOS, Android, and the Chrome Web Store.

NOLA Is Burning: A blood-soaked New Orleans noir
thriller!

Your boss, The Bull, the most dangerous gangster in New
Orleans, has a job for you. Rescue your kidnapped lover–officially The Bull’s
lover, but unofficially yours–before dawn. Slaughter everyone who stands in
your way, including other gangsters, cops, and the Triad, as you slink across
the underbelly of New Orleans.

NOLA Is Burning is a blood-soaked interactive noir
thriller where your choices control the story. The game is entirely
text-based–without graphics or sound effects–and powered by the vast,
unstoppable power of your imagination.

Will you outwit your enemies or take it to the
mattresses with your trusty sawtooth? Will you earn respect as NOLA’s most
infamous headcrusher, or will you retire to Mexico on a huge pile of cash? To
be honest, you’ll probably die. But in NOLA, death is just the beginning.
a.. Your character, your choice: play as a man or a
woman, straight or gay!
b.. Make deals with the cops, a Voodoo priestess, the
leader of the local Triad, or a fallen priest.
c.. Mix old world magic and advanced technology in a
fight to the death, and beyond.
d.. More than 70,000 words of interactive fiction,
15,000 words on every run through the game.

Choice of the Rock Star: Rock your way to the top of
the ’80s charts!

Rock your way to the top of the ’80s charts in this
interactive tale of music and mayhem! But beware, mischievous managers, fickle
fans, and gossiping groupies stand between you and rock immortality. Will your
band tear itself apart? Will you flame out on national television? Or will you
build a legacy that stands the test of time?

Choice of the Rock Star has been unofficially available
for a while now, but it’s an extremely complex game with many different paths
to success, so it took us a little while to shake out all of the bugs. We think
it’s in ship shape, now, and ready for you to rock out.

Please Spread the Word

We hope you enjoy playing NOLA Is Burning and Choice of
the Rock Star. We encourage you to tell your friends about them, and recommend
our games on StumbleUpon, Facebook, Twitter, and other sites. Don’t forget: our
initial download rate determines our ranking on the App Store. Basically, the
more times you download in the first week, the better our games will rank.

Postscript: Way Walkers: Tangled Paths

J. Leigh, author of Way Walkers: University and Way
Walkers: University 2, has written a novel, Way Walkers: Tangled Paths,
published by Red Adept Publishing. You can buy it in paperback or as an ebook
from Amazon, Barnes Noble, Kobo, or the iBookstore.

Twelve Ways create a thousand tangled paths.

Hatched from an egg but unable to shift into dragon
form, Jathen is a moot among the Tazu. His rightful throne is forbidden him
because of his transformative handicap, and neither his culture nor his
religion offer acceptance of his supposed flaws. Driven by wounded anger,
Jathen strikes out across the vast world beyond Tazu borders, desperate to find
a place where he feels accepted and whole.

Though he travels with the most trusted of
companions, sabotage and conspiracy soon strike his quest. Jathen and his
allies must struggle against man and magic alike, at the mercy of forces beyond
their ken.

As Jathen presses further from everything he once
knew, his questions of belonging are surrounded by those of identity, loyalty,
and betrayal. Where will the path of his destiny lead, and will he follow, or
fall?

Re: [Audyssey] Emailing social point

2014-05-04 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark and all,

Those are some valid points. Something else I'd like to address on the
issue of accessibility sometimes the developers themselves can't add
accessibility because of the game engine or software they use doesn't
have accessibility built into it.

For instance, Michael Feir recently brought up this subject that some
game developers might choose to use the Unity engine to build a text
based game. Problem is that Unity helps a developer have a structured
framework for building games, but it doesn't interface with the
Windows API therefore even if the game is 100% text it is not
accessible. In order for the developer to go back in and add access
would require a rewrite from scratch in another language or using a
different game engine that offers accessibility. Therefore sometimes
what seems to us like a rather trivial fix is not trivial depending on
how the game was created in the first place.

However, that said, I do think we should at least try to contact the
developers, be as detailed as possible about what needs to be fixed
and how it can be fixed, and said e-mail should be as professional as
possible. That means it should be spell checked, should use proper
grammar, and should have proper punctuation. It should be written
using formal greetings and proper signatures. As it is a formal
document one should not compose an e-mail to a game developer the way
they would write one to their best friend. Such e-mails besides being
informal tend to come off disrespectful and aren't well thought out

Cheers!
.

The game uses sound files to speak all the text,

They plan on developing a Windows, Mac OS X and Linux version scheduled to
be released in late July or August 2014.
They made the KickStarter goal for developing versions for iPhone, iPad,

Cheers!

actually I'd recommend having a listen anyway, the story of the
developers

decision to make the game is a very interesting one.

Regarding getting some of the games with larger player bases accessible,
well the problem as I said is that generally as the saying goes the
bigger

the ant hill the bigger the stink.

There are cases
where

the game is mostly accessible but requires say some labeled images where
even larger indi companies have been helpful. Two particularly good
examples of this are Kingdom of loathing and torn city. Both are pretty
big

games, big enough to make the newspapers and be reported in
innumerable

other media, but because they're text based browser mmorpgs, the access
basically involved correct image lables and in the case of Torn city, an
audio capture (and this one is actually perfectly understandable).

So, it's certainly worth a try, albeit I tend to think your better off
with

companies where you can actually speak to the developers themselves, like
trees brothers who make startraders elite.

As regards how, well the first thing is be extra polite, considder it a
formal letter that you are writing to a company. As such use any correct
titles or information you can. I for example always sign my letters Dr.

Re: [Audyssey] Emailing social point

2014-05-04 Thread dark

Hi tom.

I would personally always either play a game first to see if it was
partially accessible, or at least go on the access reports of those I trust,
and suggest fixes according to what that play showed, rather than just
picking a random game having not tried to play it and sayign could you make
it accessible

Of course this does come in for a lot of frustration, indeed I've recently
noticed that with the canvas creation technique for html interfaces access
even in text based games which according to all logic should! be accessible,
such as the available gamebook adventures on the Iphone is pretty dire. I
actually admit I find this a little frustrating, that an entirely text based
game could be made with exclusively inaccessible development tolos, after
all it's not like a gamebook would need a complete 3D audio interface or the
like.

Still this is why partially accessible games should be investigated, and why
developers who do build access into their games need all the support they
can.

All the best,

Dark.

That is weerd hris.

I've played through all of broadsides on my Iphone and it seemed absolutely
fine. The only miner issue I found was that if you had Vo on continuous read
with the downward double swipe and the add pannel at the bottom changed,
then vo would stop speaking, which could get annoying when reading long
passages of text but was by no means a major access hassle, and of course
only applies to the free games with add pannels anyway.

[Audyssey] Alter Aeon May 2014 Updates

2014-05-04 Thread Dennis Towne
For those who don't know, Alter Aeon is an online, multiplayer text
based game. The game theme is fantasy based, with swords and sorcery,
dragons and trolls, gods and demons. Our Mush-Z client is made by
blind players for blind players, and it help make Alter Aeon one of
the best blind-friendly games out there.

There have been a lot of updates over the last two months. There are
three new areas:

- The Aztec Palace and Temple at level 33, by Draak and Shadowfax
- The Island of HakaHaka at level 33, by Kagome
- Eisenmere, the Iron Sea at total level 134+, by Draak and Shadowfax

There are three updated areas:

- The Labyrinth, which and instanced and suitable for levels 34-37
- Headhunter Island, which has been raised to level 35
- Thalenwood Forest and the elven City of Trinsic, are now level 31

Major code and client updates:

- There have been a number of new Mush-Z updates, including new
sounds, better handling of recast, better shortid, and mushreader
improvements.

- Add well made/finely made/mastercraft indicators to items. Well
made items can be much more heavily enchanted and strongly reforged.

- A number of improvements and updates to the new Druid class,
including stronger water weirds, better carving, spell and skill
experience, and new sounds.

- A lot of updates to bone dragons, making it much easier to navigate
and find landing spots.

- Experience and area changes to make it easier for players to find
appropriate high level areas.

- Work continues on the account system for Stellar Aeon, and we may
also be helping with the release of a new audiogame called
Interceptor!

We've also made a number of awesome 'ease of use' changes:

- Allow 3 letter abbreviations for most door names.
- Add 'set infrashort' to toggle infravision short/long description modes.
- Make thief 'cloak of darkness' a simple status effect so it's more useful.
- Add support for 'get all' and 'put all' of a specific object type.
- Add account based player ignore and block commands.
- Improvement to boat shoreline display and boat landing site locations.

Lastly, we have an upcoming event for solstice in June. New players
are always welcome. We'd love to see you there!
