Re: [Audyssey] exploration trouble mm
Saddening, I for the most part usually play solo on muds. I generally don't like to party with people, both because of the spam and because generally for some reason the xp is split between party members rather than either leaving it the same or doubling it as a form of party encouragement. I also don't like to just sit there while someone drags me around through really tough areas that I can't even hit anything in, my thought is usually if I can't take the monster solo, its probably not much worth beating anyway. Just my opinion though. Having said all that I'm not adverse to taking a little help here and there, but I know I've definitely come off a lot more knowledgeable in the process for doing my own exploration, killing and sometimes questing and collecting rather than asking people to help me do it, no offense intended to anyone here. Its just the way I play games. As for darks assessment, I'm kind of of the same opinions. The newbie area seems to be oddly tough, especially if you're a new mudder, and you can miss a lot with the level 10 limit imposed. The first time through I wouldn't have even completed the trial if not for a bit of luck towards the end, and then I missed the third quest, the mark of wisdom. I've also never been a fan of overland wilderness, especially not lazy wildernesses that use ascii maps rather than dynamic text descriptions and directions to tell you where you're going, aka discworld, conquest, project bob. Once again, just my opinion. I'd like to think I gave the game its fair due, played for a couple days and granted I didn't get much past the newbie phase but if the quests stay that hard and hintless throughout the entire game, as much as I like questing odds are it won't be my thing. I prefer to have quests almost spoiled for me rather than play through the type of quests that barely even tell you what they need, much less give you a hint on where to find it and such, aka uossmud, new moon. This is all just my opinion though, I tend to lose interest in muds rapidly, the longest I've ever stuck with a mud was a year or so, and that was back when I used to play alter aeon, before everyone went insane and I realized just how stock the game really is. -- From: Kellie and my lovable Lady J. pebbles...@sbcglobal.net Sent: Monday, May 18, 2009 11:21 PM To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Subject: Re: [Audyssey] exploration trouble mm as for the monster in the lake, yes you need a form to beat that one. Re: [Audyssey] exploration trouble mm
To be honest my previous post was more in the matter of frustration than an actual assessment, sinse I'm royally irritated that just as I've spent 18 hours on the game and finally think I'm working things out, I'm booted streight out of the newby area without being able to finish the quests I started. and now I'll have to spend another 18 hours or so playing with either this character restarted, or a new one in order to finish them, pluss it seems I'll need to be dam careful what I do and do not kill in the village so as not to go over my xp limit. I never even got to looking at the mark of wisdom beyond finding the statue eyes from fighting pixies. I don't yet know about party play in these sorts of games. I'm personally more a questing fiend, but I could see formations being a fun so long as the group size was small enough and it didn't just become a crowd. As to the exploration side, I'm a fan of exploration in games, especially large areas, and the wilderness in Mm reminded me heavily of fallthru, it had that open ended feel. What slightly narks me is that you can be standing slap bang next to something, or on a road, and have no indication of where it was at all. for instance, when wandering around the lake searching for that fairy dust, I had to physically start at the north side, move east, and keep trying to go south to insure that I was stil skirting the edge of the lake, - ditto with trying to actually follow a road. Would it really kill the game's admins to insert the words there is a lake/road/forest to the n/e/ etc in descriptions? I think I might give the game one more go and see how i do with completing the newby area quests once again if I can, pluss choosing to start with different skills leveled up, sinse this is also my first mud experience. Re: [Audyssey] exploration trouble mm
Like I said, its not the wilderness that's my problem, it's the way the wilderness was done. Text descriptions of roads, plains and such rather than a dynamically changing ascii map is much better for an overland wilderness in my opinion. I two am a questing fiend, but I prefer to actually know what I'm doing in my quests, not be told to go retrieve the seven shards of an ancient sword, and that they're scattered around the world, but get absolutely no hints on where even one of said shards can be found, or how to reassemble them when you've found them. This is just an example, not an actual quest in MM, but its saddening how many muds have quests like this. I never could figure out how people, erm, figured them out. Its definitely not one of the worst muds out there, its got some interesting features, both that I've seen in action and heard of. But I can't in all honesty say its one of the best either. I pretty much agree with everything you said in your reply though. If you're a questing fiend you might wish to check out Asylum or New Moon, both are very, very difficult muds, though asylum is quite newbie friendly, and asylum especially, is quest based. The entire mud revolves around a quest list and you actually can advance quicker by questing instead of grinding if you have done a fair amount of quests. As for partying, asylum's got a couple of quests that are actually made for groups. But on most muds, its just as you said, the party turns pretty much into a crowd. That and parties rarely stop and explore or do much in the way of questing, usually people party up so have a big leader guy drag them through tough areas for a lot of XP, or just for someone to hang out with to break up the tedium of the grind. Anyway I'm not trying to sway you to my way of thinking, just stating my opinions mostly. Perhaps you'll find more enjoyment in MM than I ever could. -- From: dark d...@xgam.org Sent: Tuesday, May 19, 2009 10:08 AM To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Subject: Re: [Audyssey] exploration trouble mm To be honest my previous post was more in the matter of frustration than an actual assessment, sinse I'm royally irritated that just as I've spent 18 hours on the game and finally think I'm working things out, I'm booted streight out of the newby area without being able to finish the quests I started. and now I'll have to spend another 18 hours or so playing with either this character restarted, or a new one in order to finish them, pluss it seems I'll need to be dam careful what I do and do not kill in the village so as not to go over my xp limit. [Audyssey] exploration trouble mm
Hi. I must admit, the exploration of materia magica is starting to mildly irritate me. Asking on the clan channel, I was told to go around the lake looking for pixi dust. Unfortunately, sinse the room descriptions don't say where the lake is, this meant walking around, trying to move in one direction and being told I couldn't, which was the only way I could find the lake. Eventually I found said pixi dust, and entered the lake, but despite having the magic inhailer allowing me to breeth underwater, couldn't enter it, and was told to search for a specific location. I found some deep water, so searched there, but couldn't find what I was looking for, and my levitation quickly ran out leaving me stranded. I also cannot find this blasted dragon anywhere! I'm now at a stage where I'm afraid to fight anything else sinse I'm already level 9, and would like to complete the lasler quests before they kick me out of the village, - but I find the navigation a right pest, partly due to the fact that roads, lakes and other such important features are only shown on the graphical maps (walking the highroad was also a pest, sinse I kept having to guess which way it ran). Any advice would distinctly be appreciated. Beware the grue! Dark. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Yeah, the wilderness seems to be markedly similar to medievia. I've been looking for the crab as well, though I have my doubts that any one newbie can beat it, since people seem to fight it in groups. I'm uncertain though. Unless there's a way to change the wilderness from ascii to text I'd say we're pretty well screwed finding the crab without exact directions or an impossible amount of luck. -- From: dark d...@xgam.org Sent: Monday, May 18, 2009 4:22 PM To: Gamers@audyssey.org Subject: [Audyssey] exploration trouble mm Hi. Well I found the lake. You literally have to walk streight south east from Lasler. Getting into the lake or finding the actual crab though, that's another matter. Re: [Audyssey] exploration trouble mm
Oh sorry, meant to put that in my last message. To get to the dragon, you have to get through part of the enchanted forest. You have to have two of the three leaves on you already or the dryad won't let you through. The forest is a tiny bit mazelike, but nothing too bad. Just walk through the burnt section of forest till you find a west exit that leads to a mountain pass, climb the mountain, and there will be the dragon. A word of warning though, he's all but impossible to kill, since he can one shot you with a single attack. Luckily he misses a lot, but it pretty much means get in, grab what you can and run if he's awake, and sneak past if he's sleeping. As for the lake, yeah, I found at least one of the lakes, though its called lake often, and according to the gypsy I think the one we're looking for is lkae grand. Haven't found that one yet. Hopefully I can find the crab before I hit level 10 again, wouldn't want to restart a third time, especially since I found a quest this time I didn't even really have a chance to do or learn about last time. -- From: dark d...@xgam.org Sent: Monday, May 18, 2009 6:43 PM To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Subject: Re: [Audyssey] exploration trouble mm Well I found the lake. Well, I found the burnt forest, though not the dragon, then was attacked by an imp and forced into level 10, at which point I was prompty kicked out of Lasler. i'm not too happy about this actually, as I'd much rather have completed those quests first. I'm tempted to restart, but it seems like too much hard work, pluss, i'm not sure if those quests are actually completable by a character who's not higher level (the dryad in the caverns certainly killed me when i was level 7). To be perfectly honest, I'm not impressed at their starting setup, nor their wilderness business thus far. Beware the grue! Re: [Audyssey] exploration trouble mm
have you tried using the survey command to help get an idea of where things are? with most things, you can get an idea of where they are located. there are some later in the game which ou have to use sextent points but most are surveyable. In the beginning it can be daunting. It may take patients. I had ppl help me a lot. I explained that I was blind and coulnd't use the graphical maps and that helped. I actually can use the ascii maps a bit. I have figured out what symbol is me and what some of the other symbols mean. Kellie and my lovable Lady J.
