Re: [Audyssey] Discussing game ideas

2010-07-19 Thread Milos Przic
Yes, I know that the ideas like Thomas's revenge are not very serious,
and that is quite because I started the subject. If you wanted, you could
have a bunch of ideas in a minute, it would be enough just to think for a
minute about the game where Thomas would, for example, walk through some
traps set by list members and hit the oponents with his white cane. This
occured to m while I was writing this. But as soon as I would really like to
program this, I would block. That is the problem that I wanted to talk
about.

  Hi all,
Let's talk about the problem of creativity in gaming as I have big
problems with it. I want your opinions on how the game ideas come to you.
Recently we saw some ideas like "Thomas's revenge" and similar, where we
talked about how the game could look like. Then, a while ago, Fill was
posting the messages with the subject "Games we would like to play", where
new ideas were presented. Then, how much criticism was made about those
who
think about the ideas, but don't think about the possibility to implement
it

in a game.
That is where my problem comes, and it is particularly about the
interactive fiction. When I started playing if, I had a bunch of ideas.
But

when I started programming, they all disappeared. Not that I am not a
creative person, I am (I don't say that, others said it many times), so
the

problem is not that. Did you have similar experience when thinking what to
make?
I hope my message was understandable enough.

Hi Milos,
When ever I get an idea for a game or if I want to change something in a
game I write it down in a notes file so that I don't forget it.
When I am developing a game like the Harry Potter world Sarah game, I take
notes while reading the books of creatures and items I would like to have in

the game.
For example, Harry learned a water spell in the last book so I want that to

be in the Sarah game.
First I find a water spraying sound.
Then I think of how water would affect the creatures or objects in the game.
The first thing is that water puts out fires, so whenever there is a fire in

the game, I make the water spell put it out.
Recently I thought that spraying water on the floor could force the
caretaker to mop up the spill before chasing you.
So I have added that feature to the game that once per floor if the
caretaker is close and you use the water spell, he will mop it up for a
short time.
That's how I program a game.

2010-07-18 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Charles,
Yes, outlining is a big help when game programming. In fact, is a good
idea when doing any kind of programming. However, it is extremely
helpful in this case as there is a lot more than just the code to
think about. You have a complete story, game characters, weapons,
special items, whatever and you need to get all your ideas in order
before you even sit down to right that game. It is one thing if you
want a game like Solitaire where there is just a deck of cards and the
basic rules and quite another if we are talking a game with a complex
storyline and characters.

Hi Milos,
I think what you are encountering is a case of writers block. You have
a great idea, but after you begin writing you aren’t sure how to write
it or create the kind of game you imagine. You unconsciously forget
where you were going with it as you are so mentally focused on the
programming aspect of it. Yes, this has happened to me, and I have a
solution for that kind of problem.
Before you program anything if you have a good idea write it down. I’m
serious write the game idea down describe the characters, weapons,
story, whatever you can think of. Then, when you begin programming you
don’t have to try and think about all that information as it is
written down. In fairly good detail already. You just need to convert
that story or idea into some playable format.

2010-07-18 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Milos,

You know most of the games that Phil suggests are just very funny spoof game
titles and ideas. Not really meant to be made into a real game.

Personally I am not a good creative writer. If I were I might use a text game
tool kit rather than write my games in a programming language. You know allot
of my games are just remakes of card, board, sports and video games. But other
than that, mostly when I get an idea for a game, I work on it and only it until
I get it done. I am most often able to make the game as I envisioned it. Do
not lose ideas. More often come up with new ideas for the game. Allot of
those though come from other people after I have released the first version.
