Re: [Audyssey] D & D Question

2010-04-16 Thread valiant8086

Hi.
I did write a dice program that could help with some of these types of
games. It puts all of it's results and things in combo boxes that can be
navigated, making them navigable without speech, either with or without
braille at that. It does give speech output but that can be turned off. It
supports rerolling either single or multiple die that may have gotten the
same result. So for instance if you want to reroll all the 1's. It can roll
a 1d1 all the way up to 30d100. If anybody actually uses this and really
needs me to go higher let me know.

If anyone wants it it can be found at http://valiant8086.com/pkb. It's free.
Runs on windows xp and up, 32 and 64 bit both as far as I can tell. It might
possibly run on windows 98, but I'm not sure about that.

You can find numerous role-playing books, in a wide variety of systems, at
www.rpgnow.com. There are numerous other sites, including the Indy press

As to where to play, DND groups can be hard to find, primarily because
most

Many game stores will have either weekly games, or bulletin boards where

stores

are often in deep, dark corners, and are hard to find, and this is alas

You can also play on-line. Many people play over Skype or other voice

tools like Ventrillo. Others play on-line through Email lists or at forum
sites like www.rpol.net.

Good luck.

Re: [Audyssey] D & D Question

2010-04-14 Thread Nancy (Lora)
I played MTG for years. I don't know if my Brailling advice will help you,
because I carried a Pacmate or Braille Lite with me whenever I played.

On the magic cards, I would use a letter for the card's color, and then a
number indicating which card of that color it was. I'll give you examples
from blue, as I used to play a blue and white deck quite frequently, and
still remember many of the cards.

I used the letter U for blue, since I'd already used B for black.

The seventeenth blue card I acquired was clone, so on the card I wrote, U17.
That's all that appeared on the card.

Then, when that card was in my hand, I could look up U17 on the Pacmate, and
the entire card text for Clone would appear.

Similarly, U45 was counterspell, U33 was Vesuvian Doppleganger, and so
forth.

If I had to do over nowadays, I would do a few things differently.

First of all, I would Braille the card sleeves instead of the cards. This
allows me to still identify my cards, but preserves their collectability for
future resale value.

Second, at the bottom of the card, I'd probably put the monster's attack and
defense values.

Other than that, I'd probably do it the same.

I haven't played MTG in years, and sold my unbrailled cards for thousands of
dollars. I was incredibly lucky because, shortly after the game was
released, I bought a mixed alpha and beta set, entirely complete, for $100.
The guy didn't like the game, and no one knew back then how incredibly
collectible the game would become.

So, how have you gone about Brailling the game?

Tsr is the owner of the D&D trademark.
Wizards of the coast is their web site,
and some of the older d&d adventures are available for free download at:
http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/downloads
Also, they have several d&d books for sale in pdf format on their website,
and you can find those at:
http://www.wizards.com/dnd/
It looks like a good deal of 4th edition stuff is included there.
Have at it.
They also used to sell a cd that had loads of dnd material on it, including
the dungeon master's handbook and other things. It's likely it's still
available, but I'm not sure, as I've not checked the site myself.
My son is into mtg these days, so we're concentrating on that card game
instead (also from the same folks)
Brailling those is proving to be an adventure.

I just prefer making use of straight text files in notepad, since it doesn't
try to interfere with any editing etc.

Same way nowadays when reading almost any form of eBook on the computer
thats not already in audio format, I just convert it to plain text, and open
it in notepad, and just copy and paste the last line was busy reading right
at the top as a form of placemarker to find next time.

Have also got one or two other things am working on to manage character

Re: [Audyssey] D & D Question

2010-04-14 Thread dark
I just use bog standard ms word documents on my laptop myself for my stats
in M&m, with the gma dice program in the background so I can flick to it
easily.

This imho is actually quite helpful, especially when I've got a number of
powers which I need to remember alternate uses of, sinse I can just note
them on my char sheet.

If you're specifically talking about software, there are various versions

Re: [Audyssey] D & D Question

2010-04-14 Thread dark

Cool! I hadn't realized 4th ed stuff was available.

When i first played D&D in the year 2000, I did in fact used to have a Cd
with all the second ed books, including the players' hand book, dungeon
masters' guide, monster manual and many of the class and race specific
books, in word format.

The only annoyence is those were the 2nd ed books, and I was playing 3rd Ed.
i actually wrote a letter to tsr asking if they planned accessible ms word
versions of the 3rd ed books (this was a couple of years before I got on the
net), and they sent back a chalming response:

"no!"

I even once tried to interest the rnib here in England on making many sided
braille dice and getting the rights to the books, on the basis that tabletop
rp is something which blind people can do equally as well as anyone
else, --- but given that the rnib really aren't interested in anyone under
the age of 60 this was something of a none starter unfortunately.

Glad the books are available though.

Have at it.
They also used to sell a cd that had loads of dnd material on it,
including the dungeon master's handbook and other things. It's likely
it's still available, but I'm not sure, as I've not checked the site
myself.
My son is into mtg these days, so we're concentrating on that card game
instead (also from the same folks)

Brailling those is proving to be an adventure.

Re: [Audyssey] D & D Question

2010-04-14 Thread dark

Hi Steve.

Dungeons and dragons isn't a game, it's a roleplaying system. Some mainstram
games like Baldurs gate have used it, but no accessible game has as yet (for
one thing the licensing would be a fortune!), but primarily it is intended
for a group of players sitting around a table with a Gm rolling dice.

This may be done over skype or another chat program (as Phil vlasac does),
but generally it's more usual to play it with live groups.

I myself play the super hero varient, mutants and msterminds, every
saturday with a group of friends.

You can buy and download some of the rulebooks as pdfs, though sadly
not the latest 4th edition ones, at http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/

And you can find a general summery of the rules (though I'm not certain how
up to date it is), at http://srd.plush.org/ but really to play D&D you'll
need to find a Gm and osme players running a tabletop game.

hth.
