Re: [Audyssey] Homer

a saw loser?
Hi Dark,

Wow! now that is a very interesting feature that I had not anticipated. And it
brings another one to mind as well.

Technically since you did not pick up the chainsaw, it never got turned off and
kept panning to the right until it reached an illegal panning value. Nice!
And I am thinking now that if one ran to the right enough one might send a
barrel out of range to the left. It would need to be half way through so that
you would not get to the death pit. Thank you very much for finding that very
interesting undocumented feature. I will have fun modifying it in the next
version.

Hi Shirley,

You are driving around an oval track, so there are two left turns. So mostly
you will use the left arrow key to steer around the turns. If the crowd sound
is getting louder in the right speaker, hold down the left arrow key. If it is
getting louder in the left speaker let off of the left arrow key.

I do have an mp3 file of me driving around the track and jumping one bus. I

Hi Charles,

I don't think that I will be adding joystick support to Homer on a Harley
either. Guess that it would be nice for the steering, but the whole idea
of Homer on a Harley is that you must use the control key to get to the
correct speed to jump over the busses. Having a joystick throttle that
you could hold in a certain position would just make it all too easy.

Re: [Audyssey] homer help.

2008-07-24 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi Kerry,

This is the description of the Homer on a Harley game from my web site.

You are Homer, the Harley riding motorcycle dare devil. You have brought three
of your specially modified Harley Davidson motorcycles to a small oval race
track to try to set the record for the number of school buses you can jump.
Version 2 fixes the resume game and horn bugs as well as adds the play again
and rocket booster features.
In version 3 I have added, a key to speak your speed, a points system, bonus
Harleys and a practice mode.
In version 4 I fixed the practice mode save game conflict etc.
Note* you will need to disable your screen reader to play this game.

I hope that you will check out the game Kerry. It is not very easy. The
object is to tap the left control key at the correct tempo to get at and stay
at the correct speed for the distance of the jump. I myself have not beaten
the game yet.

Re: [Audyssey] homer question

2008-02-29 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi Josh,

349 MPH is the fastest that I can get going before I get to the ramp. So then
with the rocket booster the most buses that I can jump is 40. But I do not
even get to the point in sixth gear that I would shift. Your Harley only has
six gears, so I am pretty sure that 40 buses is the limit. Like I said though
I have not made it to that yet in game play. 37 is still my record.

Re: [Audyssey] homer on a harly question

2008-02-28 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi Josh,

Without using the rocket booster, I can jump 349 feet. So that is I am getting
up to 349 miles an hour. What you have to do so that you don't crash into the
garde rail at that kind of speed is to get as far left as you can before you
get to the second turn. And press and hold the left arrow key as quick as you
can when you hear Lisa say "Hang in there Dad" You know because that is the
start of the second turn.

BTW When I get up to 349 MPH and then hit the rocket booster I am jumping 424
feet. That would make a good jump for 40 buses. I have not yet made it to 40
buses though. My record is like 37 buses.

2008-02-28 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi Tyler,

100 miles an hour is only going to jump 8 buses. Even with the rocket booster
that would only be 15 buses. I have jumped 37 buses. 40 in practice mode.
Like I told Josh, you have to get to the far left side of the track to be able
to make the second turn. We always had to do that in many of the tracks of
Mach 1 as well. Your vehicle will slide or fade in a turn when you are going
at such high rates of speed. So you want to get to the inside of a turn so
that you have room to fade in the turn.

Hi Josh,

That was looking pretty good. You ended with Record number of buses jumped
successfully 20, with 209099 points. I still had one Harley left when I saved
my game, but at 20 buses I only have 208773 points.

Thanks for sharing your Homer log file.

Hi Jeremy,

I'm not sure that my games are exactly friends with Vista, but they can get
along ok with it.

I do not run Vista, but from what I understand you can do one of two things and
they will run just fine. One is that you can install them in a folder such as
%appdata%\kitchensinc and then they will run. Or you can install them to the
default folder and run them with administrative rights and they will run.

Re: [Audyssey] Homer on a Harley record

2008-01-10 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi Dakotah,

No, sorry, there is no key to check your speed. Maybe I should have made one,
but I found myself too busy staying at the correct speed and lining up on the
ramp to try to use one. So you pretty much have to listen and learn the sound
of your engine for the speed that you need. You can practice this like on the
straightaway. You know if you need 30 MPH listen to how the engine sounds at
just above 25 MPH. The same for like 40 MPH, listen to how it sounds at just
below 50 MPH.

If I do another version, which I wasn't really thinking of, but if I do, I will
add that key.

Hi Charles,

Thank you very much for confirming that Homer on a Harley works just fine with
a USB keyboard. I was not happy when I had been told that it didn't.

You need only two tools, WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and it should,
use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape.

Re: [Audyssey] HOMER

2007-12-09 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi Nicol,

I have a feeling that you are too frequently changing gears. A vehicle will
not work that way. You must use the gears correctly. You can not be in like
sixth gear while doing 10 MPH. You start out in neutral. That is where you
can just play with revving up your engine. Then when you press the up arrow
key you are in first gear. Use first gear up to about 75 MPH, Second gear up
to 125, third gear to 175, fourth gear to 225, fifth gear to 275 and sixth for
top speed. You can actually take those a bit higher until you hear the
different sounding engine sound which indicates that you are near top RPM. If
you slow down and you can not then accelerate it means that you are going too
slow for that gear. Use the down arrow key to down shift. You will be able to
tell when you have down shifted to a good gear when the engine races when you
down shift to that gear.

I hope that helps.

Re: [Audyssey] homer on a harly records

2007-12-09 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi Shaun,

Do you mean why do you slide out on the turns? That is because when you are
going very fast around a turn your tires slide and you slide towards the
outside of the turn. I am sure that you feel the force on you in a car when it
goes around a turn. Well that is way more the faster you go and the race cars
or in this case your Harley slides out due to that force of momentum.

Yeah for 3 buses you need to stay just above 50 MPH.

If you're in a vehicle going the speed of light, what happens when you turn on
the headlights?

Hi Ken,

No, unfortunately I can not blame those crashes on drinking. Might have done
better if I had had a couple of drinks. I just get nervous. Plus it is
tougher trying to get lined up on the ramp when you are coming around the turn
at like 240 MPH.

Re: [Audyssey] homer on a harly records

2007-12-07 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi Liam,

Thank you very much, happy to hear that you are enjoying Homer on a Harley.

The jumping too long just takes practice. You know learning what your engine
sounds like for each speed in the different gears. If you are having trouble
crashing in other ways, let me know and I will give you hints on how not to do
that.

Here is a drive slash walk through.

I press the enter key to start my Harley. I press and hold down the left
control key and press the up arrow key once. Once I get to about 75 mph I
press the up arrow key again to shift into second gear. At about 125 mph I
shift into the next gear and the same about every 50 mph after that. I also
have to use the left arrow key to stay towards the left side of the track.
Once I get to the second turn where Lisa says "Were all proud of you Dad" I
start pressing the down arrow key until I get back down into first gear. I let
my Harley slow way down to an idol I then use the left and right arrow keys to
line up on Maggie's car horn. I now start tapping the left control key to get
at and stay at just above 25 mph. Of course the next jump it needs to be 40
mph and on and on.

Hi Thomas,

Yeah I have stolen, borrowed or wrote some good tag lines over the years. Been
collecting them since the time when all Email programs affixed them to your
message so they could be found every where.

Just a hint for Homer on a Harley version 2. The rocket booster is best used
on or just after the ramp.

Try going so far left after the end of the first turn that you grind a bit,
then tap the right arrow once to get away from it. That'll leave you plenty
of turning room to get through the second turn.

Hi Josh,

Yeah, thanks. It might be cool if I knew higher math and did all of the stuff
like drafting in Mach 1 and an actual flight path of Homer on the Harley, but
truthfully no one playing the game would really know that. So as you said if
it works and is fun who cares.

Thanks again and BFN

Re: [Audyssey] Homer on a Harley

2007-11-30 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi Jason,

Calculating the distance is very easy. I made it easy. Probably not correct
math or whatever, but Homer's Harley jumps the same number of feet as of the
MPH speed. So you know if you are going 30 MPH you will jump 30 feet. It's
just hard to tap the control key at the correct tempo to stay at that speed.

BFN

 Jim

Remember folks: Stop lights timed for 35mph are also timed for 70mph.

Hi Josh,

Yeah, I wouldn't even try to guess how many hours I spent playing such simple
Atari games as Pong, Pole Position, Bowling, Space Invaders, Missile Command
etc. I saw those things in front of my eyes even after I closed them to go to
sleep and on the TV screen in the morning even before I turned the game on.

Hi Ron,

As others have said, the start your number 1 Harley, start your number two
Harley and start your number three Harley was just my way of keeping track of
your motorcycles slash lives in the game, so the game just automatically goes
on to the next Harley after you crash one of them. It's a good thing that
Homer has a very hard head etc eh?

Re: [Audyssey] Homer on a Harley

2007-11-29 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi Jason,

Thank you for saying that you like Homer on a Harley. To make a choice of
different Harleys I would need other Harley engine sounds. I think that I only
have two or three others and I am not sure that they have the full range of RPM
engine sounds. I would need that if I were going to use it for the game.

I am hoping to do another driving type game. Not sure if it will be a bus
driving game though. I just don't know yet.

Thanks again and BFN

Re: [Audyssey] Homer on a Harley

2007-11-28 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi Claudio,

It is safer once you press enter to start your Harley to press the up arrow key
to shift into gear and then hold down the left control key. You can though
hold down the left control key and then very quickly press the up arrow key.
But as I said safer to press the up arrow key first.

You also must use the up arrow key to shift up a gear before you keep your
engine at maximum RPM for too long. That is about 75 MPH and about every 50
MPH after that.

Hi Jim,
Yeah, you certainly made it challenging. I am sure I will tinker allot
more with the game after Christmas once the holiday madness dies down. I
really like the Simsons theme, and it is a cute little rainy day game.
I've also got Sarah to explore in depth once Draconis sends me my key
and I have several hours of uninterrupted time to play.

Re: [Audyssey] Homer on a Harley

2007-11-27 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi Che,

No, I did not put in a key to announce the speed. Mostly because I do not have
time to press one while lining up to the ramp and getting my speed correct. I
think that mostly it is learning what speed you are going in each gear by the
sound of your engine and the speeds that it does announce.

Thanks Che. I know that this game would be so so much easier with a joystick
throttle. Maybe in my next game.

Hi Brandon,

It just takes tapping the left control key at the right tempo to maintain a
speed. You could practice tapping the key and trying to keep the engine
running at a constant speed before you put it into gear.

Hi Shadow Dragon,

Sounds like you are doing pretty well. The one thing that you might want to do
is, after the first turn use the left arrow to get near the left garde rail.
That way when you slide out a bit in the second turn you have a way to go

Re: [Audyssey] Homer on a Harley

2007-11-27 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi Thomas,

I did not want to make the game too easy. It is a rather simplistic game. You
know it was like the first or second video game that I ever played. So I did
want to make it challenging. I kind of figured that some would have totally
beaten the game already. The record has to be somewhere in the low thirties.
So far I've only gotten to 15.

You do not want to hold down the control key for very long at all before
pressing the up arrow key. It is safer to press the up arrow key first, but
sometimes I like to hear the burn out and I think that you can build up a
little bit more speed that way.

You do want to press the up arrow key to shift to the next gear somewhere
around 75 mph and every 50 mph after that.

It is always good to use the left arrow key to get near the inside of the
track. That way when the turn comes you can slide out a bit and not hit the
outside garde rail.

HTH

BFN and thanks for your comments

Hi Tj,

I didn't know that it was that hard. But I have been practicing for a while
and probably writing the game helps some too.

Hi Karl,

Yep, that is exactly how I do it. Except for some times as I said I do press
the control key just slightly before the up arrow key so as to peel out. But
otherwise...

1. press up arrow to get into gear, before touching the control key.
2. Hold the control key down from now until you reach the second turn.
3. When your speedometer reaches 75, 125, 175, etc. then shift up with
the up arrow.
4. continue through the curves, trying to stay near the left side of the track.
5. When you hit the second turn, release the throttle
, and shift down to get into the propper gear. However, don't shift to
quickly, or you risk exploding your engine.
6. remember what the announcer said was the approximate speed required.
As you approach the ramp, pay attention to your speedometer and engine pitch:
6.1. Shift into the correct gear for the speed you need.
6.2. Adjust your speed so that you are at the multiple of 25 nearest
the speed you need, and either speed up or slightly from there. It's
usually possible to get a fairly good idea of your speed if you listen
to the pitch of your engine. Keep pushing/releasing the control key as
needed to maintain that speed.

While this method is not foolproof, it will work most of the time if
done correctly.

Hi Mich,

Yes, in the menu where it says start your Harley there are options to change
voices, adjust rate of speech and adjust the volume of speech and sound files.

Some of the sapi5 voices are quieter than others. So I found out that unlike
recorded speech I need to have the volume adjustability.

Hi all, my record is 7 buses. I guess it's easier after having practiced a

Re: [Audyssey] Homer on a Harley

2007-11-26 Thread Shadow Dragon
You have to shift up a lot to keep your engine from exploding. Its hard.
Especially after you get past the second turn. That's where I have trouble,
I hit that second turn and I'm going so fast that I grind into the rail no
matter how hard I turn and my bike blows up. Its definitely challenging.
I'll have to play around with it a little more, so far though I haven't made
it past 1 single bus.

Hi Jim,
Here is my first impressions of the game. Well, I like both the theme
and sounds for the game so far, but I can't even make the first turn let
alone jump one bus.
I get as far as Marge starting to speak and either my engine explodes,
I flip my bike, or I hit the guard rail. Basically, I suck at the game.
I'm having major difficulty playing it which is unusual for me.

There is really little need to uninstall it, given todays hard drive
sizes, the 2 megs it takes up won't even be noticed, and it certainly
doesn't take up any system resources
otherwise.
Besides, you never know when you might need a little stress relief granted
by jumping big yellow busses. grin.

Hi Nicol,

You can not hold down the left control key for ever. Your engine gets up to
it's maximum speed and if you hold it there for too long the engine will blow
up. The engine does sound different at and near it's maximum RPM slash speed.
You need to either let off the throttle slash left control key or shift into
the next gear by pressing the up arrow key.
