The Gainesville Sun printed some other public school system's meet the
teacher schedule about 2 week's ago. Then defended the printed calendar in
emails that I was copied on. Correction ran last week, but I wonder how
many readers only saw initial article? And there is no other Alachua County
in the United States, so I can't figure out how mistake was made.

 I don’t know how many people in Gainesville saw this, or whether there has
 been any mention of the Gator’s hometown paper getting the name of its own
 head coach wrong. Hopefully, McElwain doesn’t think my daughter wrote the
 subheadline. She managed to spell his name correctly throughout.

 Hill Brannon loves the Gators.

 He has a room lined with prized possessions from his alma mater, including
 his degree, his Florida Blue Key membership and a varsity award from his
 time as the football team manager back in the early ‘50s.

 He was told he was going to be featured in a promo commercial for the team
 about how his “Gators Story” has evolved over the many years he’s spent
 dedicated to UF.

 But when the 85-year-old yelled “come in” to the stranger knocking while
 he was in the middle of being interviewed, the last thing he expected was
 to see Jim McElwain walk through his door.

 The Gators head coach surprised Brannon with a jersey and signed football
 on Thursday afternoon to thank him for his relentless support of the
 program.

 “I’m honored, I got the head ball coach here,” Brannon said.

 Brannon’s love for the Gators began at an early age.

 He attended his first Gator game back in 1939 when he was 9 years old, and
 it was no coincidence when McElwain presented him with a game-worn jersey
 sporting the number 39.

 In addition, McElwain signed a football, which was emblazoned with the
 Gators logo, and handed it to Brannon.

 “That’s one of the best gifts I‘ve ever had,” Brannon said. “It’s about to
 get real emotional.”

 Brannon joked about buying a new stand for the ball and putting in a
 spotlight.

 Brannon and McElwain, both clad in Gators gear, talked about the upcoming
 football season, and McElwain discussed the history Brannon has had with
 the team.

 Each fall, the university recognizes Brannon with an endowment known as
 the “Fabulous ‘50s Hill Brannon Endowment,” awarded to a student in the
 College of Health and Human Performance, according to the UF Foundation
 website.

 Brannon was team manager back when the Gators brought home their first
 bowl victory back on New Year’s Day in 1953.

 Twenty-five years later, in 1977, he, along with Charlie LaPradd,
 co-captain of the 1952 team, helped organize a reunion for the team members.

 The first reunion went so well that it turned into an annual celebration
 known as the “Fabulous ‘50s” and expanded to include all team members from
 coach Bob Woodruff’s era, 1950 to 1959.

 The endowment was initially funded by three of Brannon’s peers as a
 surprise in his honor.

 McElwain said Brannon’s history spoke volumes about the passion and
 commitment he had to UF.

 As the self-described “eternal optimist,” Brannon said he had great faith

43rd Street Deli wasn't a wine/cheese place. I don't think they've ever had
an alcohol license. They opened about the time we moved to 43rd Street,
which was 1986. There was a wine/cheese place that we would walk to, but I
can't place the exact location or name. In 1979, when my Barnett Bank
account was moved to Gainesville, the only branch was in a mobile home on
the dirt, 2-lanerd, 43rd Street.

I live in Gainesville and am a former County employee.
City of Gainesville: Pros: Proximity to UF sports and culture. Medical
facilities. Cost of living is decent for Florida.
Cons: Lots of people complain about Gainesville Regional Utilities' bills.
Some of it is perception and some is reality. I'm in some community groups
with strong GRU defenders. My GRU bill includes Electric, Natural Gas,
Potable Water, Wastewater, Storm Water and Refuse. Most I talk to are
comparing this total bill to other area's Electric-only bill. Our home is
2,300 sf, I work from home (AC set about 80 degrees during summer days), we
have great attic insulation and energy efficient, double paned windows, in
a heavily treed area. It's just the 2 of us most of the year. Our total GRU
bill averages $200/month. Roads - UGH! The City is currently redoing 8th
Avenue for the 3rd time in a year. If they'd listened to the citizens, the
current design would have been the initial design. Don't try to remove a
tree, even when it falls down on your home from the city-owned
right-of-way. We're almost to the 2 year mark on that fight. GRU had no
maintenance budget for ~20 years. Pipes are exceeding capacity, breaking,
etc. Some areas of the city do not have wastewater svc, like the
neighborhood across the street from ours. So their septic drains into our
creek.
Alachua County: Pros: Lifestyle. Nature. Becomes rural quickly in most
directions. Areas served by Clay Electric Co-op or City of Newberry pay
less for electricity.
Cons: Roads. Budget - I don't know why, and I've tried to figure it out.
Alachua County and Leon County have similar population & similar acreage of
land on tax rolls. Alachua has 9 municipalities, Leon has 1. Leon's
property appraisals are about 5% higher. Leon's Constitutional Officers'
(Tax, Property, Sheriff, Clerk of Court, Elections) budgets average double
Alachua's. Leon's multilane roads are in good condition, with one
exception.

I used the women's restroom 30 minutes before gymnastics started and the
"doorway" was poorly designed. It's barely over 1 person wide and curvy.
So, me, a large woman leaving didn't see the woman with a cane coming in
until we almost ran into each other. I did step on the woman behind me to
avoid hitting the woman with a cane. The woman behind me and I then
evaluated the poor design and agreed, it should've been wider and there was
plenty of space to do so. Also, what would it be like when more than 6
people were trying to come & go?
The 1st rotation of Gymnastics the big screens showed each team's stats on
opposite corners, so the Gators' info was behind us and directly across
from us - blocked by the center display. Auburn's info was on the 2 screens
we could see.  I posted to the team on Facebook and for the other rotations
the screens rotated which team's info was shown.
I'm not sure what the redesign goals were, but I really didn't see
improvements.

I'm good friends with Randy & Janet, Burrito Brothers' owners. 4 of their
highest volume 5 days were this week. I joined friends from Tampa and
Orlando there this week, and met people who flew in from LA for their last
BBs.The cost of rebuilding twice since 2006 plus $300k decreased revenue
due to both the cancelled football games and lack of access due to
construction of The Standard did them in.
I'm also on the finance committee of the Woman's Club on University Avenue.
We lost $20k in football parking revenues compared to 2015.
I've also heard several of the clothing stores near UF took a big financial
hit from the cancelled games.
Leonardo's By The Slice closes this summer. Leonardo's 706 is ok for now.

The weekend of 9/16-18 is the Cedar Key Pirate Invasion and the event is
till on, with proceeds now going to the community's restoration efforts. We
are planning to go for either Saturday or Sunday. Maybe we can go to Gator
Soccer, though.

Parking on campus was ridiculous this weekend. Probably 3/4 as many cars as
on a home football day, but 1/10th the law enforcement and parking
attendants. We had Phillips Center tickets Friday night, received an email
Thursday warning that there might be no parking near Phillips/Museums due
to softball. We arrived at Entomology at 4:55 in a single car and waited
for an employee to leave. (We also had preshow dinner at Phillips.)
The show was Pilobolus, and before the show it was announced that there
would be a post-show Q Probably 2/3s of the people left at the end of
the show. And then the 10 minute Florida/Gainesville/ UF specific show
started. They formed Lake Alice, Bats, Gators in the water, then of course
a Chomp line, then spelled GVille with their bodies! Then the Q
Fabulous! Our 3rd time seeing Pilobolus.
