Re: JakartaOne: The Gathering
Monday would be better for me - as Marc mentioned, there are BOFs that might cause a conflict on Wednesday - but I'm sure I could make other nights. I haven't been to the Thirsty Bear either. It's very close to Moscone, though. The cuisine is Spanish, and the prices look reasonable (for San Francisco). It looks like the bar is quite big, from the photo on the web site. The JBoss people have reserved a room there on Tuesday and Wednesday, although their party is elsewhere. Again, I haven't been there personally, but it seems promising. -- Martin Cooper At 12:35 AM 3/22/02, Geir Magnusson Jr. wrote: There are people starting to travel (they are already traveling...) so lets decide. JakartaOne : Plan
Enough people have expressed interest in Jakarta One that I believe we should go forward, at least as a social gathering so we can see what we all look like. Due to the short amount of time available for preparation, as the de-facto chair of the de-facto committee (James, Jon, although he doesn't know it, and myself...) I would like to propose that we table the idea of a separate technical session and keep it social. However, if we have enough interest, we can do them in conjunction with the social program. That might make in less formal, and people will be less inhibited. For example, I know I can get a well-known Java programmer to come and talk about why he likes .NET so much. If we can convince Sam Ruby to show up, as chair of the .NET CLR ECMA committee (did I get that right, Sam?), we can turn it into a discussion rather than a presentation. JakartaOne 2002 === When Tuesday, March 26, 2002 time TBA : suggest evening, with technical talks first, then music afterwards - refreshments served throughout Where - StudioZ.tv (http://www.studioz.tv/) (Jon Scott Steven's club/event space) What Gathering of the Open Source community - meet the faces with possible informal technical talks. Refreshments certainly available. RSVP While not required for entrance, the courtesy of an RSVP to help us gauge attendance will be appreciated. To do so, send a message to geirm at optonline dot net with the subject line [RSVP] JakartaOne And that will be fine. Call for Papers --- Anyone wishing to give a short talk (10-15 mins) on something they think is interesting and relevant is invited to submit a short proposal to geirm at optonline dot net, which will be reviewed by the ad-hoc committee (Geir and James). If there are enough willing participants, we will get facilities set up (white screen and projector...) One idea is to invite the Jboss people over - they are having 'JBossOne' at the same time, but during the day, so maybe we could get a few to come and talk at JakartaOne as well. What We Need I am on the east coast of the US, and will be in the UK the week before JakartaOne, so need some local help. Since we are minimizing the scope, and StudioZ.tv will be managing the refreshments, it seems that the biggest need will be wrt publicity. I have no clue how to do this, but here are things that spring to mind. I assume that Jon with his event organization experience will correct and add to the list. o Can we get volunteers to distribute flyers at the Tuesday morning keynote, or in the lunch areas during the day? We could do that both Monday and Tuesday to get some awareness o We will need some financial support to pay for the paper and copying cost. Maybe 1/4 size 8.5x11 handbills can be cheap to produce at kinko's? If someone could figure out how much it would cost, I will be happy to pay for some, and we can take a collection or approach the ASF. o Once we iron out the specifics (like what times are appropos) I'll be happy to post the finaly announcement anywhere and everywhere. If we can get it on Slashdot... :) Anything else? -- Geir Magnusson Jr. [EMAIL PROTECTED] System and Software Consulting You're going to end up getting pissed at your software anyway, so you might as well not pay for it. One more time...JakartaOne
Well, given that there is only 19 days until the 26th and given that I haven't seen any discussion about JakartaOne other than some 'ideas' that people keep throwing out there (and no actual committee being formed to handle the planning and no decisions being made), it appears to me that no one here is actually interested in planning this event so that it will become a reality, so I guess it won't happen. I'm not going to be the one doing all the work this time. Sorry. p.s. The failure of this group to honestly solidify into planning JakartaOne totally fits into my previous statements about how Jakarta is going to implode under its own weight as the people who have been doing the brunt of all the grunt work slowly go away...sigh... -jon -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Folks, As most of you propably know Covalents offices (www.covalent.net) are right on the corner - a block or so from the Moscone center. (Our current offices are less than a block - the new ones about a 1/2 square root of a block). Hereby an offer to use our 'big' meeting room for a day. Including whiteboards, etternet-hubs, wireless, telcon/phone, coffee, thee, softdrinks c for one day (take your pick; tentative suggestion: that Tuesday). If we have a solid count and an RSVP then we'll be happy to throw in a lunch served 'while you work; if so desired or beer pizza afterwards if that works out better. Just let me or Costin know before the middle of this month (say the 15th) if you need that room, for how long, and what day(s). StudioZ (was: Re: JakartaOne?)
I would love to host JakartaOne at Studio Z. I think it would be a lot of fun. For free. * However, I do need to know the day/time/length of the event as well as what other things will be needed (chairs/tables/whatever). Unless some people here volunteers, I can look into getting some great local techno/house/trance/ambient DJ's to spin music. We do have a DSL line into the space as well as ethernet drops literally every five feet (the space was a .bomb before we moved in) and I will have an open 802.11b network available in the next week or so (as soon as the Linksys is delivered). Bring your laptops. :-) Studio Z is not walking distance from Moscone, however, it is only about a 5 minute, $4-5 taxi ride. Not a big deal. * The only requirement is that the date/times not conflict with any other events that we are putting on there. The Covalent deal also sounds cool, but I doubt they have a large dance floor and a big sound system. :-) Just let me know the details... If you can make a really string case to your local PMC for some exceptional ASF/Apache dire need, then things like travel assistance, telecon bridges, fedex shipping of legal papers, ordering of some IEEE document, etc, etc etc are within reach of the ASF/PMC if need be. Boycott JavaOne? was Re: Re: StudioZ (was: Re: JakartaOne?)
If a group were zealously opensource, a group Could publically boycott the JavaOne, hold a countersession called JakartaOne at a bar or club and a certain club owner might make a killing in selling inebriation to geeks and make a very public spit in a certain corporations eye. Hypothetically of course. It would certainly make for interesting press.. Moot for me because of my limited wealth. -Andy On Mon, 04 Mar 2002 19:20:48 Pier Fumagalli [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote. Re: JakartaOne?
This all sounds great - am looking forward to it. And to answer Jon's mail too, Tuesday sounds good. Apart from just meeting folks, having techie chats and drinking beer, it will be nice to do some cross-group fertilization. There's so much going on that its hard to keep track of it all. e.g. Maven is new to me ;-) James - Original Message - From: Geir Magnusson Jr. [EMAIL PROTECTED] On 3/4/02 1:25 AM, James Strachan [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: JavaOne is around the corner. I wanted to call it 'OpenOne' (but 'JakartaOne' is nice...) and use a space like Jon's where we could have both a social gathering as well as some short technical talks on things that didn't make it into JavaOne (for example, if it didn't have anything to do with XML or web services). Here's what I had so far as a draft : I would like to get a sense of community interest for the following idea Proposal Hold an off-site convention during the week of JavaOne to provide a venue for topics that didn't make the cut for JavaOne as well as topics that did, of course. Examples include (imagination challenged right now...) o bastard J2EE technologies - template engines (could you guess I would suggest this ?) - publishing frameworks (Cocoon et al) - web app frameworks (Turbine, Maverick, Struts) - ? o mainstream technologies - web services (I want to hear Sam talk about Axis :) - XML-RPC - ? o community discussions - JSPA issues - ? o other stuff - how about JDD talking about Objective C - Gump sociology - Maven Rationale - There are a lot of interesting things in the world that Sun's marketing crew doesn't have space or interest for at JavaOne. Many of these things are in daily production use by people, and it would be nice to hear about them. Many developers will be in the area for this week, and if we could find a way to bring us together for both social interaction as well as learning about some of the topics we work on and are interested in, it seems like a win all around. Thoughts We have an in with an event space in San Francisco (hey, Jon!) and from what I understand, it has two distinct spaces, one of which can serve alcohol. So we can divide, cleanly, the social space and the technical space. Those in the social space can bring their own, I guess :) However, I think if we do this, we should pay for the space (unless studio.tv wants the publicity :), and there lies a conflict of interest problem, but I assume that if the rate is competitive, as I am sure it will be, we can all look the other way. I don't know if we have the time to pull it off - it would be nice to put something non-lame together. I think we shouldn't be aggressive about this - find a spot in the schedule so people aren't torn between J1 and this... -- Geir Magnusson Jr. [EMAIL PROTECTED] System and Software Consulting The bytecodes are language independent. - Sam Ruby -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
