etc/samba/CifsCredentials
Where the UNC above is on windows XP, and mounted as shows above.
The credential in /etc/samba/CifsCredentials look like:
user=reader
user=harry
user=roo

(there were). I've no reason to suspect the disk drives might be flaky.

re, and google hits on the matter seem to
point towards stale metadata referencing eclasses that no longer exist.
I have a hunch you do not have valid metadata for your local overlay, so
I suggest:
1. delete the eclass directory from your overlay, run "emerge
--metadata" and emerge samba again. See what that does.
2. Set PORTDIR_CACHE_METHOD and/or OVERLAY_CACHE_METHOD explicitly in
make.conf, the best reference for these is in the eix man page

I tend to agree. I'm not sure how up-to-date AFS is, but from re-reading the
wikipedia pages, it sounds like what I need. Provided I can get it to work
together with Samba. I need to allow MS Windows
better tools for this
?
AFS has caching and can survive temporary disappearance of the server.
For me, I need to be able to provide Samba filesharing on top of that layer on
2 different locations as I don't see the network bandwidth to be sufficient for
normal operations. (ADSL uplinks te

Not, it's not. A simple "sudo bash" will give you a root shell.
The problem in your example was the missing quotes:
$ sudo bash -c "/etc/init.d/samba restart"
