[Gimp-user] 3D Lettering

2005-01-10 Thread Derek Cassista
Is there a way to create 3D text like in Photoshop? All you have to do
in Photoshop is create a path around the text, convert the layer type
to a path, and bevel the text...this won't work in GIMP.

since this question can be easily answered by looking at the tutorials
at http://www.gimp.org/tutorials please let me ask you a question.

there is nothing intuitive about the method you described here, the word
3D only occurs in your question and not in your description of the
photoshop tools and methods that perform the task.

how did you originally learn to make this text in Photoshop? did you
have a class or follow a tutorial? other ways to learn this is maybe a
friend showed you or perhaps you played around with the different
photoshop tools until you discovered it yourself?

[Gimp-user] we need more documentation

2005-01-10 Thread Sven Neumann
Hi,

now that GIMP 2.2 is out and the major problems with the early 2.2.x
releases seem to have been fleshed out, it would be nice if we could
put some effort into documenting some of the new stuff that's hidden
in the 2.2 version. So this is a plea for help on documenting things.
I am sorry that I don't have the time to do all this myself, but I can
at least try to make a list of things that I think would be worth
writing about...

 - (re)configuring keyboard shortcuts (using Dynamic Shortcuts, the
new Shortcut Editor or simply by editing the menurc

 - the new file-chooser dialogs and how to use them best (explain
keybindings and the use of bookmarks)

 - copy and paste between GIMP and other apps (what works, what doesn't)

 - drag and drop (inside GIMP and to and from other apps)

 - the new input controllers and how to use them
o configuring the mouse wheel
o configuring the cursor keys
o fancy USB input devices
o using MIDI equipment as GIMP input devices

 - setting up a tablet for use in GIMP

 - a collection of tips and tricks focusing on stuff that's new in 2.2

 - nifty things you can tweak in the Preferences dialog and in gimprc

 - customizing the GIMP user interface

 - customizing the splash image

 - batch processing images

There are also a couple of changes that affect developers which should
be mentioned, probably best added to the API reference manuals:

 - migrating plug-ins/scripts from GIMP 1.2 GIMP 2.x
o how to use GIMP_DISABLE_DEPRECATED
o how to use the --pdb-compat-mode command-line option

 - new widgets in 2.2
o GimpPreview
o GimpIntComboBox
o ...

 - new PDB functions
o gimp-context API and how to use it

All of this stuff (and more) would be nice to have. The format and
place doesn't really matter but of course it would be best to
integrate this somehow into one of the following resources:

 - the GIMP User Manual (please contact gimp-docs list)
 - the www.gimp.org web-site (please contact gimp-web list)
 - the developer.gimp.org web-site (ditto)
 - the API reference manuals (please contact gimp-developer list)
 - the man-pages (ditto)

But you could just write up something, put it online and post the URL
here or just send us some text that we will try to add where
appropriate. Docs also don't have to be perfect. It's often sufficient
to start with something. Docs can always be completed and improved
later. The developers will happily point out wrong information and
fill in the missing bits.

There's some info in the gimprc man-page but I guess some more
documentation doesn't hurt. But perhaps there are less nifty things
there than I claimed to be ;)

The random splash feature is explained in gimp(1). That info is rather
concise though and http://gimp.org/about/splash/ doesn't mention it at
all.

[Gimp-user] Gimp on Slackware 10/Slackware Current.

2005-01-10 Thread John Culleton

I tried compiling the most recent Gimp (2.2.2) from source but encountered too
many mysterious problems. I updated glib and Gtk+ and pango and so on from
the Slackware current distro but it still wouldn't fly.

So next I tried to install Gimp 2.2.0 from Slackware current. This is not the
latest, but more recent than what comes with Slack 10 (2.0.2).

When I attempt to execute Gimp I get the error message:
---
error while loading shared libraries: libXfixes.so.3: cannot open shared
object file: No such file or directory

I cannot find a file like this in the package inventory for Slack current.

So, any Gimp users out there that would like to give me a hint? I can always
use Knoppix for my Gimp jobs but Slack is a lot faster :(

Hey there, John.

libXfixes is part of the Xorg 6.8.1 release. That one is available in
slackware-current. Slackware-10.0 currently goes up to xorg 6.7.0. Grab the
x11-6.8.1 and x11-devel-6.8.1 packages from slackware-current, and you should
be good to go.

I'd also advise to use swaret to bring them down, so it can resolve
any possible dependencies as well. Good luck.

[Gimp-user] Graphire3 flakiness in gimp (1.2.5 and 2.0.4)

2005-01-10 Thread Mark D. Montgomery II
I just got a new Graphire3 tablet (yay!) and have been trying to get it
to work properly in gimp.
It works fine in X normally.
And works fine in Windows and in Photoshop Elements in Windows.

However, in gimp under linux (I haven't tried in gimp for win), it does
some odd things.

First, after switching to the pen, it will seemingly lock the input
device. The pen will only work within the drawing window (except for
movement, it will move wherever).
When it does this, my normal mouse cannot do anything other than move
the cursor around.
After much running around with the cursor in and out of the drawing
window, the input is eventually released back to the system and I can
switch devices (other end of pen - which will end up with same results,
or my normal mouse - which will work normally, I don't use the mouse
from the tablet.) or use the current end of pen as a normally (until I
start drawing with it again anyhow).

Second, after drawing with the pen for a short time, gimp starts reading
the motion of the pen when not actually on the tablet as tool input.
Basically, where I should be able to lift the pen off the tablet and use
it at just a cursor to move or whatever, gimp continues to draw with it
as if I was using very light pressure until the pen is out of the
tablet's reading range (about 1/2 inch). Needless to say, this is
rather annoying.

I'm using gimp 1.2.5 and 2.0.4 on gentoo with kernel 2.6.10-gentoo-r4,
xorg-x11 6.8.0-r3, and linuxwacom 0.6.6 (including the wacom X driver).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
:)

Thanks.

Mark II

i suggest using gimp2. the fact that gimp-1.2.5 is working on your

i think we are having some problems because i dont really understand how
gentoo works.

especially with things as complicated as a tablet, it is best to try the
version that is considered stable by the developers who are working on
it. the stable version right now is gimp-2.2.2
http://www.gimp.org/downloads/ this unannounced release happened only
yesterday so i dont think that the different distributions will have the
change yet, but gimp-2.2 has been out for some time now.

with that said, my distribution, debian testing, only has gimp-2.0
available so i am not sure what i should expect from gentoo.

perhaps if you detail what it was that you did, the X configuration and
anything else that you did to get your tablet working, someone will spot
the problem and tell you about it and/or we can figure out if it is a
gimp problem or some problem in the complicated chain of software that
connects gimp to the tablet.

gimp-2.0 seems really old to me by now.

sorry for the lack of understanding of your distribution on my part and
if all this work does not lead to getting your tablet working. on the
other hand, many people do have their tablets working with that gimp you
have and with the current stable gimp, so perhaps the best approach for
you right now is to provide more information.
