Re: The GIMP v1.1.24 Installation Saga Continues.....

2000-08-12 Thread Andrew J Fortune

Jonathan,

I have found the solution to the previous error. I had to install gtk+-devel
v1.2.8, as well as gtk+. This has now enabled me to successfully complete
./configure.

I am now having problems during the 'make' phase. (shesh.) 'Make'
chugged away for a good 10-15 minutes and then decided to spit out the
following error :

/usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.005/i386-linux/PDL/Core/pdlcore.h:4: ppport.h: No
such file or directory
make[4]: *** [Lib.o] Error 1

make[4]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[4]: Leaving directory `/root/mytemp/gimp-1.1.24'
make[4]: *** [all-recursive] Error 2

Got any ideas about this ? perl is the reason why I am going through
all of this heartache - so I can get to the perl plug-ins (esp. perlotine).

Thanks again

regards,
Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Whilst in the act of checking whether the packages have updated correctly,
try these two:

gtkmm-config --version   (I have 1.2.0) - GTK C++ extensions
glib-config --version(I have 1.2.8)

I'm surprised your having so much difficulty, I personally never bother with
RPM's instead I use
the sources. Like you I have little experience, but usually if you have a
good base system it
works nicely. Usually its a case of './configure', 'make', 'make install'
and then 'ldconfig'
(libs only).

I know how you feel, I tried the LinuxFromScratch-HOWTO, and failed. My
base system isn't new
enough to compile all the things I need, so I've tried to update the
compiler and so on. It ain't
easy, and you soon get lost when things don't work. Rather similar to your
situation...

I'm listening.

Re: Same problem as A.J. Fortune

2000-08-12 Thread Andrew J Fortune

Hi Simon,

I have made a lot of progress in the last 24 hours. I found a solution to
this problem, which allowed me to successfully complete ./configure.

The solution was to uninstall the current version of gtk+-devel and install
version 1.2.8 of gtk+-devel. You can download a copy of this by executing
this command from your browser :

http://ftpsearch.lycos.com/cgi-bin/search?form=lycosnet&query=gtk+-devel*1.2
.8*i386.r
pm&doit=Go+Get+It%21&filetype=All+files

In a nutshell you need the following for GIMP v1.1.24 :

gtk+ v1.2.8
glib v1.2.8
gtk+-devel v1.2.8
perl >= v5.00503

I'm still not out of the woods though, as I am having problems during the
'make' phase --- this is the subject of a separate EMail.

I am an inexperienced compiler as well, so don't lose heart. Its worth
hanging in there. Let me know if I can help further.

regards,
Andrew

Re: The GIMP v1.1.24 Installation Saga Continues.....

2000-08-12 Thread James Smaby

When I get into these kinds of problems, it sometimes helps to
step back and take a systematic approach at fixing things. If
the current gtk is getting in the way, get rid of it, and make
it from scratch. First, uninstall the rpms (you don't seem to
be having trouble with glib, so I would let that be). Perhaps
rpms aren't the answer (since you're interchanging redhat with
mandrake rpms), so I suggest compiling gtk from source. First
make _sure_ all the other gtk stuff is gone by looking in your
/usr filesystem for any gtk-like names ('locate gtk' or if you
are mascochistic, 'find / -name gtk'), and get rid of them. I
don't see why you can't just delete these files, but it may be
wise to move them somewhere temporary just in case. I suggest
querying the rpms and seeing what files they put where so that
you have a better chance to get them all. Once your system is
clean, compile gtk (following the same basic steps as for gimp
perhaps specifying --prefix=/usr to ./configure if you want to
put the libraries in /usr/lib instead of /usr/local/lib, but I
suggest the default). Do a 'make install', and gimp should be
all set to compile...hopefully.
Good Luck!

Yes, it's a part of detatched aquire window.

Not that I think so. It's a Celeron 300 with 96M. Increasing delay
doesn't help.

Any other ideas?

Re: The GIMP v1.1.24 Installation Saga Continues.....

2000-08-12 Thread Andrew J Fortune

Hi Jonathan,

Thanks for replying. I have done as you recommended, and the results are as
follows :

* "gtk-config --version" returned 1.2.6 - so it seems that my attempt to
remove version 1.2.6 and install 1.2.8 failed, in spite of the lack of
errors, and in spite of the fact that a subsequent query 'rpm -q gtk+'
returned '1.2.8'.
* "type gtk-config" showed that this file was in /usr/bin.
* "find '/' -name 'gtk-config" returned only one find (in /usr/bin, as
above).

I'm not sure how to best clarify my successes and failures. Basically, what
has happened, over the last 2-3 weeks, is that I am gradually getting
further thru' the configure script - but keep on encountering errors. I
think my biggest victory so far is re-installing the Developer version of
Linux and resolving the problem with the C compiler.

With regards to my immediate error, I guess I will be able to get past this
if I am successfully able to remove the version of GTK+ that is installed by
default (1.2.6) and install the desired version (1.2.8).

But the question for me is - how do I do it ?

regards,
Andrew

Someone's said it before, but try:

gtk-config --version

It should return 1.2.8, but if it doesn't then try:

type gtk-config

Which should return the directory the gtk-config script appears in. If you
compiled it yourself
then it usually appears in /usr/local/bin. If you want to know if you've
got multiple versions
then use:

find '/' -name 'gtk-config'

The gtk-config script IS NEEDED for gcc to compile the gimp with the gtk
library. Just type
'gtk-config' to see the information it returns. --cflags and --lib return
information needed by
gcc to use the library. Hardly the best description, somebody please
explain it better.

When compiling programs your host option should be (For ./configure):

--host i486-linux-libc5

How do I know that? Look at the 'irrelevent' bit on your 17.28 Fri 11 Aug
post. I recommend you
check again in /etc/ld.so.conf, since you re-installed. Remember to run
'ldconfig' after each
library you compile, or it'll still see the old version.

It's maybe time to clarify your sucesses and failures, since we've seen
dozens of emails on your
problem - and I've lost track of where we are.
