Re: [Gimp-user] application suggestions to evaluate tool options - input needed

2012-05-31 Thread eduperez
First of all, many thanks for this opportunity; unfortunately not all projects
have this attitude towards their users.

And now, let's get into matter! I use GIMP to retouch my photographs, and spend
most of my time in the application doing the following tasks:

* Cloning, to fix sensor dust, of remove some unwanted element from the
photograph.
* Dodging and burning, or painting on an overlay layer, to lighten or darken
some zones, add volume to objects, re-balance the light in the scene, ...
* Paint large areas with a solid black color, to create a false dark background.
* Paint on a mask, to selectively merge two versions of the same image.

[I think it is worth mentioning that I own a Wacom tablet, which I use
extensively; it usually sits in the center of my desktop, with the keyboard and
mouse both displaced to a side (thus, having to use the mouse or the keyboard
slows down my workflow)].

So, I'm always using some type of brush tool in GIMP; I exclusively use round
brushes, that I change in size and hardness quite frequently. In 2.6 I would
always have the brush editor dialog open with a custom brush, and modify it
from there.

In 2.8 I cannot change the size from the brush editor (well, I can, but the
change does not get reflected into the tool immediately); so, in order to avoid
having to go back and forth between the brush editor and the tool options
dialog, I have to create brushes for each hardness level. I would prefer to
have a dialog where I could quickly change the size and hardness of the brush.

And speaking of this, I haven't still got used to the new size selection
widget; in particular, setting small values is a bit cumbersome, in my humble
opinion.

I haven't heard of one for Java. The main language bindings for GIMP are for
Scheme, Python, Perl, and Ruby.

I'm not sure anything exists to do that but you could write a script. If you
autocrop each layer you could then get the layer offset for each piece (ie.
layer).

Thanks for the information.

I want to write a c++ or java program that would allow me to manipulate images
the way gimp does. For example, my program could create a puzzle of an image
without having the complete gimp program installed. Is that possible?

I noticed that the python web page you referenced above mentioned libgimp.
Will that library supply the functionality I'm looking for?

I agree. Unless running it clear down to 1,

It would be nice to have an option for each slider

same here.

I have $ and % keys bound to changing hardness, and GIMP comes with
{ [ ] and } for changing the brush size.

In preferences/keyboard shortcuts:

Under Tools,

[ is Decrease Value 2
{ is Decrease Value 2 More
] is Increase Value 2
} is Increase Value 2 More

Under Context,

4 is Decrease Hardness
$ is Decrease Hardness More
5 is Increase Hardness
% is Increase Hardness More
(I added the lsat four bindings myself; on my keyboard $ and % are the
shifted versions of 4 and 5 respectively, and I used to use 2 and 3 and
shifted versions fo those for brush size before I found GIMP already
binds them)

[Gimp-user] Gimp, of course

2012-05-31 Thread superuserlaptop
Every one has their attitudes and reasons for doing things. I like gimp
save (XCF) if I am working over a period of time on a project.

But if all I am doing is cleaning, cropping, and adjusting gamma. I want
to be able to make my default save, PNG. Not an export; a default save
as PNG. If I want something else I can open the format window or change
the defaults.

So I will plead with you to consider making it possible to set a default
save and export as the user chooses.

Why? Because I imagine the over-all goal is to make working with
graphics easier.

As for writing scripts. If I do that I'll fork Gimp and take out some of
the Must do this way. Which is common in Apple software and Microsoft,
and yes Linux.

I use Debian Wheezy, SID, with a Mate Desktop environment. GIMP 2.6.12

Of all the commercial software I have had to use in the past, I still
like Gimp the best for the things I do in photography and video. It will
never be perfect, but we can strive for it.

Again, Please, let *me* set the default save and let *me* set the
default export.

Thanks for the great program and support.
