It means I build new Gimp 2.9.x packages on a weekly basis, I hope.

You can install the gimp-plugin-registry package. It contains 
resynthesizer 2.0. AFAIK resynthesizer 2.0 from git is three years old.
The version resynthesizer 2.0 in the gimp-plugin-registry package should 
be same as in git.

There have been a number of 'fails' in the last few days, both Gimp and
dependencies. Keep checking here until there is a good build.

I compile a 'portable' an appimage from there and also a gmic compiled against
the gimp 2.9.5 code and Gimp 2.9.5 / gmic-2 from about 15th Jan works ok.

It works.

I try to build "downgrades" to 
https://git.gnome.org/browse/gimp/commit/?id=00faf1796535ca63402f53b687ae96dbcbca, 
and I will wait for a solution of the issues before I publish recent 
Gimp 2.9.5 versions.

For a few minutes I've installed the lastest stable version - 1.7.9 - 
from my "official" repo, and surprise, surprise it crashes. I hope 
today's Gimp 2.9.5 version will close this issue.

Tried with a fresh .config/GIMP and same thing.

version is 1.8.0_pre.
I could reproduce that strange behavior. My environment is like 
yours: Kubuntu 16.10, Gimp 2.9.5 (36ebe03), G'MIC 2.0.0, all 64bit.
I see: G'MIC 1.8.0_pre chrashes as well. I will build new Gimp 
packages. Shit! :'(

Ive found a package for this libpng-dev_1.6.26-2ubuntu1_amd64.deb and
have it
installed.
The problem is when I #sudo apt-get install libgs-dev or any of the
following
libgdk-pixbuf2.0-dev libgtk2.0-dev librsvg2-dev  libxft-dev

the apt-pkg system reset the libpng-dev to libpng12-dev because that is
a dependency in each of these packages.
If I dont install these packages the make fails looking for
/usr/share/aclocal/gtk-2.0.m4
and I'm sure that is just the first error.

What is the proper way to  upgrade the libpng-dev to 1.6.26 so I can
compile 2.9.x?

What will be the name of the upcoming babl version?

babl 0.11 or 0.2? It's very important for the packaging regarding a 
parallel installation of Gimp 2.8 and Gimp 2.9.

Thats the problem, then, I am using elementaryOS, based on Ubuntu 13.


Sorry, but for now I can't change this. There are fucking deep 
dependency issues with Ubuntu = 14.04.

my Ubuntu PPA - https://launchpad.net/~otto-kesselgulasch/+archive/gimp
- for Ubuntu and its derivates has estimated 10 downloads for Gimp
2.8.10 as far I can trust the stats from api.launchpad.net. ;-)
The supported Ubuntu distros are Precise, Quantal, Raring, Saucy and
Trusty for i386 and amd64 architectures.

Precise: 90504
Quantal: 1990
Raring: 4655
Saucy: 11736
Trusty: 181

Sum: 109066

 I am running Ubuntu 13.10, and was running Gimp 2.9 - installed from your 
 PPA. 
 When I first installed it, it ran just fine, then started throwing up error
 messages with new tiff files derived from my Image Data Converter or 
 Irfanview.
Is it possible giving me a link to those tiff files? I hope the images
are harmless.

 I uninstalled, reinstalled, and then, this new problem where Gimp won't start 
 at
 all.
Have you some strange plug-ins installed?
 I have since purged your ppa and reinstalled 2.8 (latest version), and it is
 working fine.

 The above notwithstanding, I am very excited to see the progress on version 
 2.9.
 I had it installed on my Win7 setup, and, while it seemed to run very slow, it
 had no problem handling 16-bit tiffs.
Mmm, strange.

 On the Linux side, your ppa ran very crisply.
Sorry, but it's a development version. ;-)

 Looking forward to when I can get it working again.

FYI: If you need to install a Gimp developer snapshot - just call it
Gimp 2.9.1 - on Ubuntu Raring and Saucy try this:

But consider it's experimental. Use it on your own risk!

PS: I could not made packages for Precise and Quantal because of a
dependency issue: Gimp 2.9 needs at least Glib 2.36. I will try to build
a standalone version for older Ubuntus which will carry it's own packages.
