before I got the smartphone. Why do you use that instead of, for ex.,
printing out verif. codes that are sent you by Google when you opt for them?

That's good to know. It doesn't surprise me that they have started using
that method to gain access to people's Google accounts. I am setup to use
the Authenticator app when getting codes for 2-step authentication so
Google does not send me text messages with verification codes.
