I still await your clarification to my TWO previously asked but yet

1. WHAT is the basis of the allegation you made in your letter to the new

UK charities scam linked to Sangh Parivar
Ashish Kumar Sen
Washington, February 25
A report to be released in the House of Lords in London today provides
alarming evidence linking UK-based charities to Sangh Parivar groups in
India.

The report, “In Bad Faith? British Charity and Hindu Extremism,” produced by
Awaaz, a London-based secular network, states that these charities collected
donations running into millions of pounds from the British public under the
guise of humanitarian causes. Most prominent among these were relief efforts
to aid victims of the Orissa cyclone and the Gujarat earthquake.

“We do not think it is a coincidence that the two Indian states where
Hindutva networks, violence and hatred have grown phenomenally in recent
years both had natural and human tragedies, followed by massive funding to
Hindutva organisations from overseas,” the report says.

The document explains in detail how the UK based Sewa International sent £2
million raised for Gujarat earthquake relief to its Indian counterpart, Sewa
Bharati. Part of the Sangh Parivar, Sewa Bharati has a well-documented
agenda of expanding Hindutva networks in India.

[Goanet]RE: Church overTemple

2004-03-21 Thread Gilbert Lawrence

Subject: Church over Temple

Alfred de Tavares:
Yes, many churches and chapels in Goa occupy erstwhile Hindu temples are

built on the sites of those demolished. It was not a question of lack of
real estate but rather of supremacy: Psycologically, nothing surmounts
to a greater degree the paramountcy of the latest comer/invader than
their God/gods lording it over those that the subjugated peoples
deified.

For a certainity, the Igreja da Nossa Senhora dos Milagres, Mapuça and
the
Igreja do Espirito Santo, Margao took over the existing temples. The
bell
tower of the Milagres proves that. In Loutulim, our ancestral Capela da
N. S. dos Milagres, in Vanxem, is a converted temple. Mario Cabral e Sa,
among others, will have many more examples.

Gilbert Lawrence:
You have certainly provided some specific names and details that leads
me to believe you know what you are writing.

But you also wrote very confidently and with certainity, that Goan men
were raped en-mass by wine-drunk Bacchus and his many maidens when they
invaded Goa from Greece. This was all pre-Alexander the Great. No such
historical version exists of this account of your post/story. Neither do
Goan men report of being raped by women. :=))

Subject: RE: Church built on Temple?

Santosh:
Hey, I think Gilbert is on to something here. Perhaps, the Portuguese
were the original inhabitants of Goa. What do we stupid Goans, except a
privileged few, know any way? So those who claim that the Portuguese
were invaders must provide facts to prove their claim. Of course, nobody
expects a Goan to provide such facts.

Gilbert responds:
I don't want to take your glory. But am I mistaken? I thought Santosh
started the annual Goan awards to those who expended their time, energy
etc. to unearth Goan untruths, false beliefs etc. Of course I could give
you all the synonyms for the word 'false' in the English lexicon. :=))
Whole of Goa congratulated you for your efforts to eradicate 'Bondol' an
age-old disease that affects Goans. Hmm.. Hmm.. wonder where we got it
from? Is this another thread of 'lagao bhathi'!

OK, I get it! English-versed Goans on GoaNet DON'T suffer from this.
Only those uneducated fisher-folks engage in bondol and exaggerations.
:=)) Should we give an annual award to the person who started the
biggest Goan Bondol of the year?

In all seriousness it is irresponsible in the current sensitive
political environment in India for anyone to make the above assertion
without hard evidence. Gilbert.

[Goanet]BCCI AND CONGRESS

2004-03-21 Thread N.KRISHNA

The recent report that London manager’s fraud costs BoI $82m may not be a
simple case of fraud and could involve political pressure and if the past
is any thing to go by, Congress could be the prime suspect.

The notorious Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI) finally
owned by the ruler of Abu Dhabi paid bribes to the family of Indira
Gandhi as per the records of the U.S. senate sub-committee investigating
the bank. This was one of the reasons for closing the serious cases
of murder, smuggling etc against many Dubai nationals like Lootah,
Galadhari, and Al-Futtaim etc
Then there is the stranger case of the late Agha Hassan Abedi, who first
founded the Pakistani Bank BCCI and its involvement in drug money
laundering and funding of the nuclear programme in Pakistan and its
connection to Congress Party of India. . The Vatican Bank was active in
Europe and America in drug money laundering, and BCCI had specialized in
the Asian drug market. Abedi's reach extended to the U.S. also. He even
had the former Secretary of Defense Clark Clifford as his lobbyist for a
fee of nearly $100 million! This was exposed in U.S. Congressional
hearings, and Clifford was disgraced.
What has this got to do with the Gandhis of India? For a start Abedi
happened to be a major donor to the Indira Gandhi Memorial Foundation,
later controlled by Sonia. The first Indira Gandhi Peace Prize was
awarded to Yasser Arafat, with money donated by Abedi! In addition,
several members of the Gandhi trusts have close ties to Pakistan. A high
official of the Nehru Museum and Library is a Pakistani who claims to be
a Marxist. Sonia Gandhi's close associate and official spokesman Mani
Shankar Aiyar has consistently taken pro-Pakistani positions on most
issues - from the Jinnah House in Mumbai to Kashmir. In one of his
columns, he went so far as to suggest that Kashmir could be handed over
to Pakistan with the expectation that Pakistan would help India get oil
from the Central Asian Republics! The Pakistani Archives, if opened
some day like the Soviet Archives, should have many interesting secrets
to reveal. Not only the Congress party collected bribe from Saddam
Hussein in the form of oil, but is linked to KGB for which the case is in
Indian courts and with CBI. Congress may be under the control
of the Italian Mafia and this could be the reason for the death of so
many promising Congress politicians on Sundays which is the preferred
days by Christians. Imagine what will be the reaction of the India
public if the Pak secret achieves are opened and if Congress is linked to
ISI of Pakistan. Many Kerala Christians in Gulf who funds the
Congress Party in Kerala are also running Pakistan schools and even work
as the front man for the Pak drug money. One such Gulf NRI is Sunny
Varkey who lives in Dubai and runs the ‘Our own English schools and
Pakistani schools’ in the gulf. On September 22, 2002
one of the two helicopters being used by Sunny Varkey in India while on a
visit, crashed in a village near Lonavla in which one Jacob Chakoria GM
of his establishment was killed. Officially the accident is due to
bad weather, but it is rumored that Sunny Varkey who is an ISI assest and
under RAW investigation, was the target of an assassination
attempt. Then there is the case of the world’s biggest audio
video piracy group known as Thomson Electronics in the Gulf run
mainly by two Kerala Christians sponsor many Congress politicians
like Ramesh Chennithala MP. Congress politician Muralidharan of
Kerala was running Hawala business in Dubai. This list is
endless. Because of these the BOI involvement may not
be a simple case of a fraud by a manager, but it may involve some
political involvement.

MUMBAI, MARCH 20: 2004 In a development that could wipe out
its entire third-quarter profits and more, the Bank of India has been
ordered by a London judge to pay $82 million (around Rs 370 crore) for
knowingly engaging in fraudulent transactions with the long-sunk Bank
Credit and Commerce International (BCCI).

The same judge who, in December, had cleared the London branch of the
State Bank of India (SBI) of any of any wrongdoing, came down hard on
BoI. He said the bank could not sidestep responsibility for the actions
of its London manager.
Refusing to accept the verdict, however, the chairman of BoI, M
Venugopalan, told The Indian Express: “We have decided to challenge the
ruling of the London High Court in a higher court. Our lawyers will study
the verdict in detail.’’
In awarding damages of $43.2 million and accumulated interest of $39
million to BCCI’s liquidators Deloitte and Touche, Judge Nicholas Patten
outlined the scheme that was hatched to defraud the depositors.

Many people, including a large number of Goenkars in the mid East, lost a
lot of money with the collapse of BCCI.

Creditors who last £16bn in the collapse of Bank of Credit and Commerce
International 13 years ago drew a little blood in the High Court. Judge
Nicholas Patten slammed Bank of India for 'ineptitude' for its part in the
scandal and ordered it to pay £45m compensation. He ruled that its London
manager had known BCCI's deposits were being used to defraud creditors and
said India's sixth biggest bank had failed to carry out proper checks.

CURTORCARES EASTER NITE.

One of the Goan organizations in Kuwait “Curtorcares United” which is become
so popular in the community because of its charismatic and social worker
president Mr. Salvador Dias will organize Easter Nite on 29th of April 2004.
The Easter Nite will be held in Kuwait City at Hotel Faker Al Deen Palace
starting at 8.30 p.m. onwards. To keep the atmosphere in the Majestic Ball
Room lively and enjoyable popular local band Stepping Stones will provide
the musical score. To give extra punch for the entire function, young Goan
girl Miss Thracha D’Mello from Curtorim Goa and currently residing in Dubai
will especially fly to Kuwait to compeer the proceedings of this Easter
Nite. Miss Thracha is not a stranger to Kuwait Goans since she already
compeered the proceedings of the One Day soccer festival held recently at
Sour Grounds by Curtorcares United. During that time she already captured
the hearts of the people and gained a very good impression from the people.
According to available information, Miss Thracha is popular in UAE for her
skill and smartness in compeering the Ball Room Functions and I am sure she
will create a lasting impact of her skill in Kuwait during the Easter Nite
organized by her villagers in Kuwait on 29th of next month.

The highlight of the Nite will be the beauty pageant contest for the
selection of Easter Queen. Fabulous and attractive prizes will be presented
to the winners and runners-up in different categories, of course first time

[Goanet]RE: Church built on Temple?

2004-03-21 Thread Gilbert Lawrence

Gilbert.

[Goanet]TidBits - Mhapsa Fest is still on.

2004-03-21 Thread Floriano Lobo

TidBits - Mhapsa Fest is still on.

Mhapsa Fest has long since ended but the reverberations on account of which
are still being felt. Per se, the fest was a very good idea. The controversy
started when I voiced my displeasure of the fest being called the Mhapsa
Fest. According to me, Mhapsa was definitely Marathi sounding since the
name of this town has always been spelled as Mapusa.

Miguel Braganza, who was one of the main organizers of the Fest took offence
to my saying what I had said and there was a lot bile flowing on the net on
account of that for a while before all became quiet and normal.

I happened to see Mhapsa Fest surfacing once again through the Herald's
Reader Speak captioned MORE ON THE RECENT MHAPSA FEST (Herald 4 March,
2004), by a senior citizen of ward 5 of Mapusa. Glad to note that I was not
the only one to object to 'Mhapsa' the incident was forgotten once read.

However, I was not surprised to see Miguel, at his best, retaliating the
above through the Reader Speak of March 11, 2004 captioned JUST
CRITICISM? DO SOMETHING BETTER On going through the piece, I felt a bit
uneasy. There was something in this piece which seem to be not just right.
Therefore, I looked up March 4 paper and went through the senior citizen's
piece again. And there it was. The senior citizen had never mentioned
anything about drug addicts. But Miguel had specifically castigated the
senior citizen over drug addicts, Quote -Let him do his Lenten repentance
or go searching for the drug addicts in the park with a lantern- Unquote. I
generally took it as Miguel's imaginations running wild and accusing
someone for things he has not said . And I promptly forgot all about the
whole thing.

Until yesterday, when I attended a meeting of a group of Mapsekars of which
I am also a member. And since I had met Miguel once at such a meeting, I
casually mentioned about the above letters I had read in Herald . To my
surprise, the senior citizen who had written the letter to Herald actually
was present for the meeting. And he went one step ahead and showed me the
letter that he had posted to the Herald. And voila, the drug addicts did
figure in his letter. I asked the senior citizen Did you also post this
letter to Miguel Braganza?. No he said. Then how come he writes about
the drug addicts when nothing is mentioned of it in the Herald's print
version? I asked. He just shrugged and said Maybe Miguel got to read
my letter to Herald through his good offices with the Herald's Staff To
that I said It is highly unethical of Herald, or even of Miguel for that
matter, to do that, even through friendly relations. And it amounts to
the abuse of such relations.

Cheers

[Goanet]World Goa Day - 2004

2004-03-21 Thread George Pinto
Dear all,

This year World Goa Day (www.goaday.com) is being celebrated Aug 21, 22 or at times
convenient to
Goan organizations based on their calendars.

This year's main theme is JOBS FOR GOANS - not just in Goa but around the world. One
of the most
significant issues facing the world-wide Goan community is jobs and our economic
future. There are
other important issues too. However, we should focus on this theme during the WORLD
GOA DAY
celebrations. In the past, Rene and I have been pleased with the events, but sometimes
they did
not have a serious, meaningful element.

This year's celebrations on Aug 21, 22, can be left to each individual organization.
However, the
celebrations should include the theme: Jobs for Goans. We would recommend that
whatever the
celebration, there should be time set aside called JOBS AND CAREERS.
1. Invite speakers from various business organizations.
2. Invite employers to discuss their companies, especially Goan employers.
3. Invite Goans seeking jobs to come to the event and network.
4. Provide career advice.

The future success of Goans is based on our economic well-being. We have many Goan
unemployed in
Goa. In addition, Goans around the world do not know necessarily know the various
opportunities
available to them and do not necessarily seek the top jobs or the highest positions.
They need
encouragement, support and information. They need to see and hear other successful
Goans.

In addition to the JOBS FOR GOANS theme, if you have time consider adding the
following to the
agenda:

1. FINANCIAL LITERACY. Invite money management speakers. The can talk about
investing,
retirement planning, insurance, children savings accounts, elder care management, etc.
There is a
critical financial literacy gap in the Goan community which needs to be addressed.
2. POLITICAL INVOLMENT. Invite political activists, even if you disagree with their
views. Have
them discuss the political process locally and how one can be involved. Ultimately,
without being
involved in the political process, we will continue to be marginalized and sidelined
while others
dictate our future and make the rules we live under. No point in complaining if we do
not become
active politically. Through political power, most of our other goals can be achieved.
3. HEALTH FAIR. Invite doctors/nurses and have them speak about prevention and cures
of common
diseases and ailments. Diabetes, heart disease, blood pressure, cancers, children
heath issues,
senior citizen issues, etc. There are a number of topics which can be covered.

Let us move forward together in a meaningful, memorable manner.

Regards,
George Pinto Rene Baretto

think some are still there in that shape in Goa. But without proper

Dear all I have been following this Temple Tantrum for some time. It is my

are well placed.

Some thoughts - random order

1. What is the use of ANY religion if its fanatical followers have NO
concept of Peace, Understanding, Compassion and Caring for the downtrodden.?

2. Lino's Hindu ancestors may have had their temples restructured into
Catholic churches, but what about (say) MY Buddhist ancestors whose Pagodas
and Stupas were restructured into Hindu temples?

And where on earth are the Goan Buddhist sites? ( please see Appendix 2 3

when I grow up) to be like the REAL researchers who quote SELECTIVELY from a

The discovery of the first image of Buddha.

The late Fr. Henry Heras, then the principal of St. Xavier’s College, Bombay
conducted a small excavation at Mushira Waddo in Colvale in the 1930.
During the excavation, he discovered an image of Buddha. This image is now
exhibited in the Fr. Heras Institute, located in St. Xavier’s college,
Bombay.

The image of Buddha in Dhyanamudra is dated 4th century AD. It is
postulated that the Buddhist monastery at Mushira Waddo might have been
established by the feudatory rules of Goa, i.e. the Bhojas of Chandrapur.
However, no traces of the monastery are found at Mushira Waddo today.

The discovery of the second image of Buddha
The second image is the head of Buddha in bronze was found in the house of
Mhamai Kamat of Panaji and presently exhibited in the State Museum of Goa.
It is a beautiful piece of bronze of a very small size (about 3cm.x2cm,).
This head of Buddha is dated to 7th century AD.

The discovery of the third image of Buddha
This image was discovered in Rivona, Sanguem taluka, which is about 70 Kms
from Panaji. This image is in Bhumi Sparsha Mudra and is headless. The
height of the image up to shoulders is 90cms and the breadth of Vajrasana is
115cms. The huge rectangular pedestal of which this above image was placed
in the monastery was also found. The two other small pedestals on which
perhaps Bodhisattva images were placed were also found. However, Bodhisattva
images were not found. The image of Buddha from Rivona belongs to 7th
century AD.

This image of Buddha was found lying in a topsy-turvy fashion in the midst
of a field

[Goanet]Archbishop installed on Gudi Padwa.

2004-03-21 Thread Miguel Braganza
It was a wonderful experience being at the Se Cathedral, Velha Goa/Old Goa,
for the installation of Filipe Neri Antonio Sebastiao do Rosario Ferrao as
the fulfledged Archbishop of Goa and Daman[ That he was the titular Bishop
of some obscure place in Mauritania till date was news to me!]. The ceremony
was simple and edifying, the choir was not overpowering, there were no
wailing children or ushers strutting about[ now a days one sees them
strutting even in the cemetary]. It was a solemn, religious affair. Just as
one would like it to be.

Technology was put to use. Live video coverage with LCD projection on the
'big screens' placed at vantage points ensure that each one could 'see' what
was happening at the alter and enjoy the choir without craning one's neck.
The digital cameras will ensure that the pictures in tomorrow's paper will
be of a good resolution. For those on the net, there must be video footage
at www.goacom.com Joel D'Souza was very much there.

Snacks and tetrapacks of mango juice were served to the congregation after
the mass in a dignified manner. The packaging material was collected back
with equal grace. Most of the people had travelled from their homes early in
the morning to be at the Cathedral by 09.00 A.M. The snacks and juice were
indeed a relief. It was very thoughtful of the organizers. A gift from the
parishioners of Bambolim, the home parish of the outgoing Bishop, I am told.
Tara Narayan was there; but there was very little to write a food column in
the Goan Observer..even though Shri Manohar Parrikar was there ,too.

Lots of Magenta colour with the Papal Nuncio, two Cardinals of Goan origin,
the President and member Bishops of the Western Region
Bishops'Council,Bishops of Goan origin and the two Archbishops of the day
amidst the multitude of white cassocks and clothes of every hue..including a
lot of black suits on a hot summer day. Did not see Wendel or Savio Jon
around, though.

Above all, the day belonged to the humility of Fr.Filipe Neri and the love
of God who sent His only son to this Earth to serve mankind.

Fr.Filipe Neri has his role model in Jesus Christ. He was the best person
that lived on this Earth. No one can be better. For all His good work, He
was crucified. No worse fate can await us. We must do the best we can, as
long as we live.

'And they will know that we are Christians by our LOVE'...for it was Love
that made us and it was love that saved us. Love is not our exclusive right;
it must include us just the same.

warm regards,

Miguel

[Goanet]A State-wise Analysis of BJP-NDA's Election Prospects

2004-03-21 Thread Thalmann Pereira

Media Favours BJP: Hype And Reality

 Harkishan Singh Surjeet

THESE days the media are at their game again --- the game of projecting
as if the BJP led NDA is sure to come back to power. One of the papers
has even dubbed the coming Lok Sabha polls as unnecessary, on the
presumption that their outcome is already known to one and all. But, as
Yogendra Yadav puts it, If the media were to decide elections, the
general elections to the 14th Lok Sabha would be a pointless exercise
(The Hindu, March 15). He then adds that he is not convinced of this
established wisdom and that years of watching elections has convinced
me of the value of political commonsense and has taught me to disregard
 hype.
 RECALLING A BIT OF HISTORY

IN fact, the role of a sizeable chunk of the media consists in
generating precisely such hype at this stage when the nation is to go
through the 14th general elections. Yet this is not something new. For
the last several years, what we have been witnessing is that come an
election and the media pundits go wholehog to make the people believe
that the BJP is going to win the elections hands down. This is precisely
what they did in 1991 and 1996, and in some later elections. Moreover,
in 1998, despite all their projections of a landslide for the BJP, the
latter could form a government only after hurriedly cobbling a motley
post-poll alliance. Then, in 1999, the BJP could not increase a single
seat in Lok Sabha, compared to 1998, though its allies did register
 sizeable gains.

We may even recall here a bit of history --- that whatever seats the BJP
got in 1996 and 1998 was, to a considerable extent, because of the sense
of revulsion the people had developed for the Congress regime of 1991-96
and then for the meanest type of Congress politics during 1996-98. So
much so that the party first forced the United Front government to
change its leader and then brought the UF government altogether down for
the narrowest kind of considerations. In contrast, in 1999, the BJP had
no such negative factor to exploit and no positive achievement of its
government to bank upon. Further, the Kargil episode also enabled it to
exploit the popular sentiment though, ironically, the BJP led
government's own gross negligence was itself responsible for the
 terrorist incursions into the area.
The inference is obvious. If only the BJP were not in alliance with
about two dozen parties and if only the Kargil episode had not taken
place, the party would probably have suffered in 1999 itself.

 CLASS INTEREST AT STAKE

BUT it is precisely these kinds of considerations that our media pundits
very conveniently ignore. It is therefore no wonder that, one after
another, most of their forecasts have miserably failed to materialise in
the last one decade or more. This is not to deny that a few of their
pre-poll surveys or exit surveys have been close to the mark; yet one
cannot say that this was altogether devoid of an element of fluke.

Yet, one point must not be overlooked. If some people are fond of saying
that people's memory is short, they must also add that the memory of
many of our media pundits is no less short. However, there is a crucial
difference here. If people's memory is short because of their day-to-day
preoccupation with the struggle for life, the memory of media pundits is
short because of their own choice. To forget how their past predictions
had miserably failed is, to put it plainly, necessary to serve the
vested interest of those who pay them hefty salaries and perks.
The point is obvious. A very, very large chunk of the Indian big
bourgeoisie and also of foreign multinationals have unmistakably
indicated that the BJP or the BJP led NDA is the safest bet in so far as
their class interests are concerned. Going by a recent newspaper report
(Hindustan Times, March 5), while the Congress has hired only 4
helicopters for election campaigning, the BJP has hired as many as 20.
This only gives a boost to what the people widely believe --- that the
BJP has been the largest beneficiary of the Indian as wall as foreign
bourgeoisie's largesse. But these sections of bourgeoisie also know that
if only the BJP comes back to power, they would be able to recover may
times over what they have donated.
Economists like Jean Dreze and others have already shown that before the
Vajpayee government recommended the Lok Sabha's dissolution, it gave
hefty concessions to the rich while claiming to give relief (widely
called sops) to other segments of the population. In such a situation,
one can well guess to what extent the BJP would go to repay its real,
 behind-the-scene benefactors.
 POLITICAL RACECOURSE

THE sale of public sector concerns to private parties at dirt-cheap
prices is only one case in point, among many, through here too examples
like the BALCO and Centaur Hotel stand testimony to their shameless
perfidies. Nay, one of their ministers was so arrogant

Dear Bond,

Wud you unsuspect a viper even if you thought it was nice, pleasant and
friendly for a change? And I do not mean the Viper of Taleigao. I mean, a
real, live viper, the crawly thing.

Likewise, do not believe what you read in the newspapers. What is printed
there is for the consumption of unsuspecting, gullible guys like you and
me. RSS will never change its stripes. You mean to say that the CM does not
agree with the Guvnor? The Cigarette Czar must have contributed a pretty
packet to the BJP's election fund. And if the CM didn't make an outwardly
show of refusal, then it would be a stink. Therefore to save their own
noses, they have planned this well.
If I am right, you will not hear of this fallout ever again.

Today, the CM was in attendance of the installation of the new Archbishop
of Goa, Daman and its territories. Right on the Se's alter to wish him with
a bouquet? Why??? For more gullible catholics to join BJP's minority cell.

IT'S A WHOLE BALL GAME. DO NOT TRUST THESE GUYS. THEY ARE CALCULATING EVIL
AT THE CORE.

And if Dr. Willie gets to contest in the North on the NCP ticket, then take
it that it is to favour the BJP's Sripad Naik, and nothing else. The BJP
will only be running to the Parliament from Goa, laughing.

Dr. Shekhar Salkar of the NOTE is doing a wonderful job !!
Alas ! He is a BJP man.
He should work in the same direction to see that no religion is mixed with
 Politics.
'Cos that too is bad for the health of a Progressive Nation.

It will be next to impossible to get the right accent
due to your tongue twisting native language. However
just to get somewhere near, try blowing air with your
tongue protruding out.might help.

Anyway, 'Eu te amo muitissimo . eode po'

I've to master the right accent and pronunciation now,
so that it won't sound like I kissed your grandpa!
Eu te amo muito muito. Cheers,

[Goanet]INTRODUCE ENGLISH FROM STANDARD I

2004-03-21 Thread Vasu Raekar
My solemn support to GPC Education Cell. Finally we
are seeing some light to improve our skills in
English. Exclusion of English language in primary
education was an impediment to our little ones and
would trigger hindrance of socialising with English or
International Counterparts. Likewise other private
schools (those affiliated to other Education boards
other than GU) were harvesting on such opportunity.
Goans were the one of the lot that benefits from this
'idiom'. Russia, Poland and other non english
speaking natives are including 'How to Speak English'
in your leisure itinary.

INTRODUCE ENGLISH FROM STANDARD I: The Goa Pradesh
Congress Education Cell has suggested that English
subject be introduced from standard I onwards and that
Goa State Council for Education, Research and Training
be granted total autonomy. (GT)

Contractor falls for biscuit trick
--
A Vasai-based contractor, Achinta Kumar Das (46) travelling on a
Konkan Railway train has realised how bitter a biscuit could taste
if accepted from strangers.
Das, who has been admitted to Hospicio hospital here on Wednesday
evening after three young lads offered a biscuit laced with drugs, has
been robbed of Rs 55,000.Margao PSI, Suraj Halarnkar informed that
Das had boarded the Mandovi Express at Panvel enroute to Kaiga in
Karwar where he has bagged some contracts. When the train reached
Karmali railway station at around 6.30 on Wednesday evening, around
three youngsters all aged between 22 to 26 years boarded the train.
The trio are believed to have developed friendship with the contractor,
wherein Das offered them tea. And, the youngsters accepted the offer,
but in return gave him a biscuit which made him feel giddy before he
fell in an unconscious state.Police said the trio then decamped with
cash of Rs 55,000 which Das had stacked in his pocket by cutting it
open. He was carrying the amount on his person to pay the labourers
employed by him at Kaiga, the police added.
Police has registered a case against unknown persons under sections
380 and 328 of the IPC. Further investigations are in progress.
