How very significant that Rural Development Minister Churchill Alamao has 
suddenly woken out of his sleep and conjured a scheme from up his sleeve to 
revive agriculture. And how significant or insignificant that the kickoff 
commences in his constituency Seems like pandering to me. Perhaps the 
minister is lining up his ducks in preparation for the elections. We also have 
to see how much his personal coffers grow as a result of this scheme. Would be 
interesting wouldn't it? After all, this seems like another bondol to hoodwink 
the public.

I speak to my sister, who is married to a gentleman from Loutolim, almost every 
other day. But we never brought this topic, until this morning.

She started by asking, Did you know Nadia's mother? She ia a school teacher at 
Loyola's? I immediately knew, she was talking about the dead girl and her 
mother from her husband's village.

At first, I said, I don't think so. But I was curious to know what her mother's 
name was and she said Sonia.

Damn! How could I have not known her! She was my class teacher in grade 6 and 
taught me for at least three more years after that.

Suddenly, I felt very sad and admitted to my sister, that indeed a teacher by 
that name taught me at Loyola's. But back then I think she was single and 
probably went by the last name of D'Sa.

Because of the current situation, people tend to portray the family in bad 
light, but I am not sure who to believe. It is true that Sonia, was the hottest 
young teacher on the staff at the school back in late seventies/early eighties. 
She was a great teacher to our class, but some of us were more interested in 
her physique than the material she taught us. With the manufacture of 
testosterone kicking into our systems, we were quite nasty kids back then.

I still can't believe that we are talking about the shy attractive school 
teacher and her daughter. What a small world!

I had written in response: Rajdeep Sardessai’s low stoop favouring his 
financers and advertisers. The so called FOURTH ESTATE especially electronic 
media has forgotten their MANDATE. Time has come that a FIFTH ESTATE is 
required to harness electronic media. Media is sacrificing their 
responsibilities at the altar of their business interests.
Take for example SMS polls they conduct. SMS are sent only by a few. One 
person can send any number of votes. They do not cover a sizable population. 
The voters do not constitute representative sample. Poll results therefore 
can create a wrong impression in the minds of people who are not fully 
informed and who are unable to see through the lacunae in the poll and 
business interests of the TV channel. The Charge for SMS is also higher than 
normal. Mobile service provider makes money and shares it with TV channel. 
The government should ban this charge. In fact the SMS should be free to the 
sender. If at all the mobile service provider has to be paid, it should come 
from TV channel. This way more people can vote and the polls can be 
meaningful. Consumer forums should take this up.

Goa is a small place, and it is perhaps unfair to identify people in a
way that gives grist to the gossip mill.

As someone pointed out in this debate, there is a clear duplicity
which condemns the women involved, while stays silent about the ethics

*Goa’s Tourism Minister Micky Pacheco who was interrogated by the police
over the tragic death of Nadia Torrado, 27, resigned from the Cabinet early
on Saturday on instructions from NCP chief Sharad Pawar.*
 But the drama in the case continued as the controversial and abrasive MLA
went underground, apprehending an arrest. Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat
said Pacheco had been asked to step down by Pawar because of the allegations
against him, and his resignation had been accepted.

The police said there was strong evidence of abetment to suicide in Nadia’s
death, and Pacheco was needed for further questioning. “The very fact we
have filed a case under Section 306 shows there are pointers to abetment of
suicide,” DySP Atmaram Deshpande told Deccan Herald. He also said a lookout
notice had been put out against the MLA who is untraceable.

Nadia died on May 29 at Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, from post-operative
complications after a liver transplant. She had been flown out of Goa by the
NCP MLA for treatment first to Mumbai and then to Chennai, after a suicide
attempt on May 15. The police said Pacheco signed the Goa hospital admission
forms.

Four years into her marriage with Winston Barreto, Nadia filed for a divorce
from her husband in October 2008. Her husband contested the divorce and
blamed Pacheco for ruining their marriage.

In a curious twist to the case, Barreto and Nadia’s mother Sonia Torrado
closed ranks after the young woman’s death and complained that they were
being harassed by the police. Nadia had consumed poison by mistake, pleading
for closure, insisting that no one was to be blamed for her death, they
alleged.

In a related development, the crime branch questioned the family again on
Saturday.

CUP OF CAFFEINE

One night, a businessman was working late in his office on a crucial 
assignment. He was exhausted and was finding it difficult to remain awake. He 
reached out for the bottle of coffee that his secretary kept in her desk and 
made himself a hot cup of coffee. He immediately felt refreshed and was able to 
complete his work.

He mused over the magic produced by the cup of coffee in altering his tired 
mind into alertness. He was convinced that the crucial ingredient in the coffee 
that made the conversion possible – caffeine – was indeed a remarkable 
substance. He decided that he should thank his secretary for her thoughtfulness 
in keeping that coffee bottle in the office.

The next day, he presented a box of sweets to his secretary, profusely thanked 
her and waxed eloquent about the wonders of caffeine that was in the coffee 
that was in the bottle in her desk… Hearing this, his secretary began laughing 
and showed him the label of the coffee bottle which read – decaffeinated coffee!

His ‘belief’ that caffeine would drive away his tiredness transformed his state 
of mind. If he chose to believe, even a plain glass of water would have had the 
same effect. Our mind rules our body and our beliefs rule our mind. It is 
pertinent to note that conviction borne of strong belief needs no other 
crutches! Not even caffeine! 

No need for crutches like cups of caffeine, 
Let’s BE BETTER at beliefs that sustain!

COMMENT:

Very well said, FN.

While the chips should fall where they should, the slander of a
person, especially one who is unable to defend himself/herself, is
both unethical and disgusting. Worth noting that neither of the
slandered are/were public figures.

Without judging the morality of others, the only questions which
should interest the general public, I submit, are the following:

a: Was this a suicide, accident or homicide?
b: If it was suicide, is there any evidence that it was abetted (as claimed)?
c: Was this an affair between two consenting adults or was one party
coerced and hence molested?

If this was an affair between two consenting adults, it is none of the
general public's business.

As expected, Politicians and their agents will throw mud at any
opponent, while pretending to be saints themselves. We saw it happen
not so long ago during the impeachment proceedings of Bill Clinton.
The most prominent of his accusers came tumbling down because of their
own 'youthful indiscretions'.

The general public would do well to avoid getting sucked in by the
propagandists. These unscrupulous chaps will do anything and say
anything to get what they want. And, they are quite likely to make a
180 degree turn depending upon the financial (or other) incentive.
Knowing the short-attention-span of the general public, these
unscrupulous will then divert the public attention by creating another
salacious scene.

It might also be worth remembering that while these diversions occupy
Goan minds, the ghuspott relating to money, land and the environment
goes on even more merrily.

Perhaps, the Fourth Estate will one day ask of everyone who accuses
another: Have you anything similar to declare in your own life?

There is more than meets the eye here, conclusions could be arrived at,
depending on what is percolated down from the media.

It seems that it was an 'open secret' about the relationship between the
Minister and his bosom buddy friend.

The Minister is a public servant and his affairs and those involved therein,
become public purvey. Simply put, if he sneezes - he wants us (Goa Goans) to
know, and we (Goa Goans) also want to know...such is the carousel...we are
all on it!

There has been two sides to this...as far as Goanet postings are concerned.
One painted a pic of a beautiful young girl caught up in tribulations not of
her own making; the other painted a pic of some one, who was well aware of
what she was entering into and was sucked like a moth to the flame.

That it is no one's business - I think not...there is the broader picture -
it they can do it why not, so can IPerhaps the broader spectrum of Goa
Goans, are left mouth gaping. They have had so many indiscretions that they
are by now quite immune to what is going on.

There are many unleft questions to ponder over. That there is more than
element of doubt is unquestionable - whether our Goa Police are up to the
task? I think that the Goa Police will close this one with a prosecution.

forward on this is to the educated youngsters involved in this. So your best
bet with help from some one in the know in Goa, would be to get Xaviers
mapusa and Navelim College of arts students involved. The students have a
hunger to do something positive...any challenge, they will relish.

When I got up this morning (late), the monsoons seemed to have settled 
in. June 7. Usually, the pre-monsoon showers are rather typical, 
precipating and getting heated in the day and rainfall in the evening. 
But this was morning showers.


It was dry for much of the day, and cooler too. Has just started again 
with a steady pouring of the rain in Saligao, 8.12 pm. FN

In my view, politicians should be judged by their public service (or
abysmal lack of it, as often is the case in Goa, regardless of party),
their role in office, and how they take ahead the interest of the
citizen ... or damage to it.

Their private lives isn't particularly relevant to the public debate.
It can be misleading too if we are obsessed with this aspect.

Good men can make terrible political leaders, and vice versa. Correct
me if I'm wrong, but this is what I read in the *Inspirational Quote*
magazine recently: Franklin D. Roosevelt is said to have been
associated with crooked politicians, consulted astrologers, had two
mistresses, was a chain smoker and drank eight to ten martinis a day.
Winston Churchill is known to have used opium in college. Adolf
Hitler, on the other hand, was a decorated war hero, a vegetarian,
didn't smoke, and hadn't have any extramarital affairs! External
appearances can be deceptive.

As for private citizens, their mothers, ex-husbands, brothers, etc...
should they be discussed and debated at all? Should we have a public
trial of their morals and ethics? Should we assume guilt because their
sense of priorities (or sexual ethics) don't tally with ours? I think
not... FN

PS: For me, it would be more interesting to hear about the dubious
politics played by political quarters -- and echoed in the media --
not excluding the case of a suicide victim.

Mickky's sin wasn't his queer sense of morality (a quote attributed to
him: You prove that I am married twice and I will step down from the
ministry. I am married only once, to Sara. I can have as many women as
I want.) But the fact that he hought he could take on the powers that
be, with  rape capital headline-making comments, and what not.

The beauty is that parties like the BJP will make use of the Micky to
prop them up in power, and then cash in on the scandal with
what-has-Goa-come-to comments. Meanwhile, the Congress, a party
lacking in any common ideology whatsoever apart from equally inflated
ambitions, will continue to settle scores with one another. The
message is clear: you can get away with murder, as long as you don't
rock the boat.

So will we continue to have our agenda set by one political mafia
exposing the other... one drug gang setting-up the other? YouTube, et
al?

I applaud you for your initiative. I wish I was in Goa and I would definitely 
have done some leg-work with you. After reading the topic on Goanet, someone 
informed me that Samaritans are in operation in India.

As yet, we do not have a branch in Goa. I suspect one easy way would be to get 
in touch with the branch in Mumbai and see if they are keen to lend their 
support in opening one in Goa. I suspect, if the idea takes seed, the various 
womens groups in Goa would be keen to assist. It isn't too difficult to get in 
touch with Audo Viegas, who is a prominent women's rights activist. She is from 
Margao. The main problem will be getting relevant funds organised. In this, 
Samaritans Mumbai might be able to give us an idea of how to go about raising 
funds. Perhaps in the beginning, a low budget operation would suffice, getting 
volunteers and their numbers listed. Suicide and depression are more prevalent 
among women than men. Men tend to medicate their mental health problems through 
alcohol, drugs and sexual excessiveness.

Please do let me know if there is some way I can help to take this forward.

Recently renovated (work still in progress) is said to be  one of the 
oldest temples in Goa  (7th Century AD?)
Shri Mahalsa Narayani Temple.
 
Varuna (God of Rains), Varunapur = Old Mardol 
(and hence Verna name after Varuna ?)
 
I went inside, it looks beautiful and spacious with large granite type 
stone flooring etc
At the centre, there  is a main Idol of the God with Silver 
plated surroundings.
Two mini temples with idols at the sides and again two larger
 temples at the extreme ends with facility to walk round it.
Sadly, there was a board to the left of the main temple/idol/Priest  
saying – ;Photography/Video grapgy prohibited inside the temple’
 
However, the young priest (Bott Mama) seated by the main idol, 
 was busy on his cell phone and seen him using his one hand 
to give away the ‘Tirth’  (holy water) to the devotees.

It appears that monsoon  started in Goa today  as from early hours 
(of  7th June 2010)
It also rained today intermittently and it rained  till 10pm . 
(Time now 1145pm).

There have been umpteen Naxals arrested in Goa recently.
The governemnt and/or its agencies can extract any confession/s from them at 
will to justify its fight against Maoists. At all cost they want those MOUs 
signed.
These confession are what people like Nandkumar Kamat will cling to 
irrespective of the logic which is glaring in their faces,  of the tribals 
being treated like dirt

by these well to do skunks.
Nankumar Kamat is not selling his pro-capitalist and pro industrialist 
biases to anyone.
On the contrary he is making a fool of himself when everything  is black and 
white for all to see.
It is said that the horse can be dragged to the water. But no one can make 
it drink against its will.


It is agreed that the Maoist have the agenda to take power in India. 
Everybody knows that.

We are talking about the tribals who are suffering at the hands of Vyasyas.

This is reference to recent pollution on Goa's beaches due to appearance of tar 
balls (blobs of solidified tar).  It is quite obvious with this recurring 
phenomenon that we in India do not have stringent maritime laws or the 
mechanism to implement the feeble laws that are in place.   We are now in the 
21st century but our maritime laws (just as criminal or civil laws) are of 19th 
Century and hence not in sync with the commerce and trade of 21st century. It 
is ironical that India is aiming to conquer Space and Moon when we don't even 
have control over our Land and Sea.

 

Goa's economy is directly or indirectly dependent on sea.  70 percent of Goan 
population survival depends on how we manage our marine and sea coast 
environment. It is depressing to see the State of Goa is not in control of its 
land or resources even after gaining Statehood 23 years ago.  Marmagoa Port is 
under occupation of MPT. Dabolim Airport is under occupation of Navy and 
thousand of hacters of land is with the Army.  The Forest area is looted and 
plundered by illegal mining mafia. The western shoreline in now more of sore 
line and under control real estate sharks.  

 

We have MPT whose primary objective seems to mint money by encouraging old 
rusted cargo ships to call Marmagoa Port.  There are hundreds of ship marooned 
off Marmagoa Port some for loading Iron ore and some just idling and 
discharging waste into the sea.  There is no one to monitor these ships which 
spills chemical  oil (fuel/lub etc), which result in environmental damage to 
life  property.  Frequently, there is chemical and oily water discharge in the 
marine environment which not only pollutes the beaches but also endangers the 
marine life.  As the port operator it does very little to stop/control any of 
the spills/pollution within the territorial waters of Goa.Navy or coast Guard 
the guardian of our territorial boundaries is as clue less as MPT and has not 
shown any interest in protection of Goa's sea cost. 

 

Oil spills and chemical discharge at high seas by the marooned/passing vessel 
must be treated as act of terrorism.  If people with arms and ammunition kill 
the people so are these ships which kill and endanger the marine life and 
destroy biodiversity of the state.  In the last decade, the Goa-based NIO has 
discovered and explored three wrecks, which includes a 17th century merchant 
ship, known to be the oldest underwater wreck traced in the seas off India. 
Thanks to government apathy Goa's underwater heritage is gnawed by the rouge 
treasure hunters.

 

If none of these organizations can protect or help the people of Goa of this 
menace, why we need them?  I hope people of Goa will take resonance of these 
facts when they select the next government.

This was only small suggestion, a suggestion for overseas Goans to
support (even if they don't speak the language).

I am sure there are a many others ways including the Goan Overseas
Associations who for the most part carry on the Goan 'culture' of
drink-dance-and-we-all-fall- down!!

When I mentioned to one such association that Goan identity is ...on a
slippery slope..they said it was not in their interest/mandate.
Understood, once you have a few drinks in you and having a good time,
who cares about identify, WHAT? Ofcourse, now I understand what a lot
of them stand for and the sometimes angry reaction on the GoaNet to
overseas Goans. Least they could do is throw some small change towards
Concani mangazinesbelieve it or not, our mai baas is most
important to Goan identity.

Sadly, one overseas Pau wrote privately (I think) to me saying Goans
have two-wheelers these days and maybe someone should go door to door
selling subscriptions (to the magazines). I say thank you for the
great suggestion Senor Pau. He ofcourse, missed the point as do a lot
of others *sigh*.
On the other hand, Fausto should say something...suggest something.

[Goanet] Workshop for Tiatrists held

Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) organized a special workshop exclusively for 
tiatrists on writing Konkani in Roman script correctly. The workshop was 
held yesterday 07th June 2010 at 10:00 am at TAG’s Conference Hall, 
Campal Trade Centre, Panjim. In all 42 tiatr artistes attended the workshop.

Shri. Tomazinho Cardozo, President of Tiatr Academy of Goa, guided the 
participants. It is a fact that tiatr artistes did not have any formal 
studies of Konkani in Roman script and hence they write in different 
ways. Shri. Cardozo put before the participants basics of writing 
correct Konkani in Roman script.


Correct formation of sentences, use of ‘C’, ‘Q’ and ‘Y’ alphabets were 
discussed thoroughly. So also the use of consonants for writing correct 
pronunciations of different words, were also discussed. The exercises in 
writing different words and sentences were also conducted. The 
participants actively interacted with the Resource person. The 
participants expressed that the workshop was effective in learning 
various aspects of writing Konkani in Roman script correctly.


Mr. Cardozo also assured that more workshops of this nature will be 
organized so that not only tiatr artistes but all others who wish to 
learn to read and write Konkani in Roman script correctly may 
participate in the same.


The workshop ended at 1:45 pm.

We are a nation of hypocrites and the current state of our polity 
provides
ample evidence of this fact. We address our legislators as honourable members'
despite the fact that a large proportion of them consist of charge-sheeted
criminals! Recent events in our own State have shown to what depths even those
elected by us and entrusted with our Government can sink.
 But whom can we blame for this sordid state of affairs? We have
the precious
right to choose our representatives and we keep re-electing the same rotten set.
Many years ago, I had the foolish audacity to stand for an assembly
election election
and was told by a neighbour whom I had approached for support:you are
a good man,
but you will not do our work! - for our work read illegal activity
such as issuing
false certificates etc. I had regrettably to confirm this fact and got
thoroughly
trounced as a result! In other words, we are getting the sort of
Government which
we deserve and which we have freely chosen and we cannot blame anybody else for
our fate. I (and those of my generation) can only thank God that,
despite the absence
of many material comforts, we have seen better days.

The former Tourism Minister of Goa, Mickky Pacheco, did not appear for the
second session of questioning on Monday, while Lyndon Monteiro, his former
OSD, moved a District and Sessions Court in Margao for anticipatory bail,
fearing arrest in the unnatural death case of Nadia Torrado.

Crime Branch officials had summoned Mr. Monteiro for interrogation.

Mr. Pacheco resigned on Saturday as a Minister after his name got embroiled
in the ‘Nadia case' in which police have filed a case of abetment to suicide
against unknown persons. The woman died in a Chennai hospital where she was
admitted after consuming rat poison.

An official spokesman of the Goa police said the involvement of the former
Minister was clear, but to ascertain the extent of it, they wanted Mr.
Pacheco to answer certain queries. He said there were many inconsistencies
in the replies given by him in the first session and the statements given by
the family members of the deceased. Crime Branch officials interrogated the
family members of the deceased again on Monday.

The police spokesman also said that the official divorce papers submitted by
her husband to the investigating officials showed a clear relationship
between Mr. Pacheco and the deceased.

Sources in the police said that Ms. Nadia's post mortem report said she had
died of multiple organ failure.

In his anticipatory bail application, Mr. Monteiro said his association with
Mr. Pacheco was confined to his OSD role and he had nothing to do with his
personal life. The application will come up for hearing on Tuesday.

Crime Branch officials said they are still trying to contact Mr. Pacheco.

Perhaps, if we all examined our conscience and followed the path of 
righteousness we would be living in paradise. However, the reality is different.

My last visit to Goa left me with the impression that deceit and corruption has 
crept into many of the institutions which we regarded in my youth (1940's) as 
being honest and upright. But then who will cast the first stone?

Perhaps a new age is yet to dawn and once again we hope the youth with their 
compassion and ideals will prevail. Sadly, the old are beyond redemption 
because it has entered the body politic. 

We hope that we can ask for those who believe they are clean and chase will 
stand up to be counted.
