[Goanet] Write-ups on H. Britton on Herald
The following appeared on page 4 of HERALD on 1/10/09 Rane condoles H. Britton’s death Herald News Desk Panjim, Sept 30 Chairman of Kala Academy Pratapsingh Rane has expressed deep grief over the sad demise of renowned Tiatr artiste H. Britton. “As a versatile artiste of Tiatr stage, late H. Britton has contributed immensely for the development and propagation of Tiatr. His acting of female role as well as a comedian and singer provided a great stimulus to Tiatr. Due to his demise, Goa has lost an all- rounder personality from the Tiatr stage,” said Pratapsingh Rane in his condolence message. *** The following appeared in the Editorial column of HERALD yesterday, 2/10/2009: Unassuming H. Britton Reo Cunha, Moira Konkani tiatr is passing through a critical period with the demise of some good tiatr personalities. With the passing away of M. Boyer and Lucas Fernandes, a void has been left in Konkani tiatr that can never be filled, as was the case with the demise of singers like Tony Carr, Tony Call, Luis Martin, Baby Tony. A few days ago, another multi-talented personality of Konkani stage, H. Britton, left the world. His contribution to the Konkani stage is not only immense, but unique. In spite of serving the stage for over 40 years, he has never used titles like ‘King of Melody’ or ‘New King’, unlike a few singers who do self-publicity. May his soul rest in peace. [Goanet] Pearls, pigs, and panic...
There is a pandemic panic, and but it is written DO NOT THROW YOUR PEARLS to Swines... But what about the swines throwing their pearls (chouriços) into your palate? Who is who? And when swines sneeze the swine flu spreads as far as Swindon in UK! But wait a minute! Are we behaving like swines in these days when everyone is impatient, the garbage is at a level where everyone talks about garbage and NO ONE wants to take the responsibility? Are we we behaving as pigs, or acting like them? Interestingly, before we pass on the bucks and buckets like the gorement netas do, one must analyse, that a Swine is an animal who was designed to clean the dirt, it has a tremendous immune system. The Jews were expressly prohibited that pork could not be eaten. But to-day Goans cannot do without pork and sausages I know a few people who are addicted to sausages and pork derivatives and one finds the butchers hanging around behind St. Jerome's church Mapusa each sunday after the spiritual food, they go for the swine flesh! Someone jokingly remarked: if you want to get OSAMA bin Ladin feed him with Goa sausages There are three kinds of persons, those who will heed warnings and abstain from meat specially of cows and swines, and go vegetarian, those who relish the filthy meat as good for you knowingly or ignorantly and the third those who could not care less...eat drink and be merry! The cow disease has just gone, the bird flu too, but now these dirty pigs are creating havoc! X.B.Moidekar Add whatever you love to the Yahoo! India homepage. Try now! http://in.yahoo.com/trynew
Re: [Goanet] [Secular Goa] Ram Rajya
I fully agree with Tabrez Mohamad that our dear CM, being the elected representative of a secular democracy, must not use sacrilegious religious terms such as Ram Rajya in his political public speaking. When I say sacrilegious, I mean offending to secular democracy. Secular democracy cannot mix with religion and religious sentiments. Tabrez Mohamad must be seen as defending secularism and not offending any religion, more specifically the Hindu religion. With due respect/regards to Sandeep Heble, his justification for coming to the defense of the CM's major 'slip' in a secular democracy by citing Sonia Gandhi and/or others of having used the same terminology is inadequate and base-wrong because any politician invoking religious sentiments publicly is undesirable. One must lead by example (which ever religion one belongs to) but not be the show through weighty words alone for general public consumption and consolidation of power. We all know that all religions preach the same ideology, the ideology of GOD and GOODNESS and are deadly against self-agrandisement through loot and plunder of people's tax money. (Jesus, for instance, was crucified because he was against tax-collectors of his time) India has been unfortunate to be cursed with religious bigotry. Ram Rajya has earned us the demolition of the Babri Masjid, for which L.K. Advani has paid dearly by forfeiting his life's dream of sitting on the chair of the Prime Minister of India. And, with the demolition of the Babri Masjid , the secularity of this nation's polity has been undermined and vastly threatened. We have had Godhra, Kandamal and more in the name of Ram Rajya following this criminal act . And we are going to have much much more indicatives of this Rajya from the people who are themselves far far away from such Rajya. Let our politicians be content to harness the true meaning of the word 'GOOD GOVERNANCE' [ Su-Raj (ya)] alone, and let terms like Ram - Ishwar - Allah Rajya be left to the religious leaders and the religious bigots to utter and to propagate. floriano goasuraj. 9890470896 www.goasu-raj.org - Original Message - From: Sandeep Heble sandeephe...@gmail.com Sent: Thursday, October 01, 2009 12:40 PM Subject: [Secular Goa] Ram Rajya In his letter Saffronised system appearing in Herald(Sep 30), Tabrez Mohamad seemingly takes offence to the words Ram Rajya, used by Digamber Kamat in his speech, without understanding the proper context in which the Goa Chief Minister chose to use this term. I once got into serious trouble when I told a friend at a Party that she was dressed to kill and she took it literally, not understanding the context and the proper meaning of the expression. Whenever terms with religious connotations are invoked, we need to understand the context instead of judging these with prejudiced eyes. With Religion being a way of life, many terms whose origins may lie there have found their way in the modern secular diction. Like Ram Rajya, other apt illustrations would be Inshallah and For Christ's sake. Ram Rajya was first invoked by none other than Mahatma Gandhi in the pre-Independence days; to outline his vision of a free modern India. Since then Ram Rajya has become common parlance in Indian political circles. Political leaders have often used the expression to signify a truly democratic form of governance on the basis of equality and justice for all, or in brief an ideal administration! In recent times, Congress President Sonia Gandhi used this term in an election speech in Uttar Pradesh. Ram Rajya, she said doesn't differentiate between people... it doesn't have hatred... there are no communal riots in Ram Rajya... it's such a system which provides justice for all. When similar religious concerns were expressed in those days, Gandhi, in his clarification that appeared in the news-daily The Hindu, explained that politically translated, Ram Rajya is his idea of the perfect democracy in which, inequalities based on possession and non-possession, colour, race or creed or sex vanish; in it, land and State belong to the people, justice is prompt, perfect and cheap and, therefore, there is freedom of worship, speech and the Press. How beautiful! Would anybody in their true sense refer to such views as unreasonable or tag the Father of our Nation as unsecular? The real problem with our Chief Minister is not his words. They are his actions or rather lack of them. If the CM wishes to transform Goa into Gandhi's Ram Rajya, then such an act will indeed be a step in the right direction; and a model democracy based on such lines shall be an ideal democracy: truly for, of and by the people! Where we can all live with rights, freedom and dignity, where we are not threatened or intimidated by non state actors, where we are not discriminated against on the basis of our caste, creed or religion, where the State shall rule justly and wisely and where we get to enjoy full freedom, equality and justice in

[Goanet] Karachi celebrates World Goa Day
Karachi celebrates World Goa Day By Gavin D'Lima One hundred and seventy-eight Goans spent a day at a farm on the city's outskirts in the Malir area on September 20. The farm served as a wonderful backdrop for World Goa Day celebrations. Osman Farm with two inviting swimming pools, lush green gardens with coconut trees brought back memories of good old Goa minus the feni and choricao. Upon arrival, the members of the Executive Committee of the Goinkars Own Academy served delicious hunter-beef sandwiches, samosas, fruit juices and goody-bags consisting of daily use items. Rene Baretto--- thanks, kudus, congratulations to you for your enthusiasm and persistence for not only starting this universal day but ensuring that it flourishes. Were it not for Rene passing this unique sense of togetherness to our fellow Goans, 'World Goa Day' would not have been a reality. It was wonderful to see a large crowd comprising of young and old assemble on a single platform to celebrate 'World Goa Day' in Karachi. The morning commenced with a prayer for the sick and deceased members of the Goinkars Own Academy, followed by a welcome address by the MC's Marshall Fernandes and Deborah Santamaria (President, GOA). Registration and setting up teams for a cricket tournament started at 1030 a.m. The matches evenly played by five mixed teams (boy and girls) were amicably umpired by Valentine Fernandes. The matches had its moments of laughter and tension amongst the players and the crowd as runs were scored, wide and no balls bowled and catches dropped. Finally the winning team was awarded wrist-watches while the runners-up got P-caps. Before lunch, a round of Tombola was played and the winners were issued dinner/lunch/cake vouchers. At 2 p.m. a delicious lunch of Biryani, Shami kebabs, salad, raita and kheer was served. To relax after a heavy meal, a round of Silver-Pool Tombola with attractive cash prizes was eagerly played by Tombola enthusiasts. After Tombola, a lucky draw session was held and about 70 gifts were distributed as young and old gathered, holding on to their lucky coupons. The prizes was an assortment of pens, Goa tote bags, mugs, key-chains, T-Shirts, pouches, jewellery boxes etc At 5 p.m. Lemon cake was served with hot cups of tea. DJ Fabian played English and Konkani songs throughout the day. At 6 p.m. guitarist Louis Fernandes along with a group played English, Konkani songs and Mandos which was enjoyed by all. At 7 p.m. the President of G.O.A. announced the close of the day's event, thanking the members and participants for being cooperative and making the entire event a thorough success.
Re: [Goanet] A Proposal for True Democracy - Herald [3/10/09] - ' OponionatED ' - By Annand Madgavkar - Comments
shall not reproduce today's column verbatim but urge readers to follow it from the web page and/or the news print. In this write-up, Annand Madgavkar displays the same comical ideal of arriving at true democracy by duplicating the Panchayat Raj System/Municipal System where we already have people elected and paid to do the same job that he suggests the citizens undertake at their own resources and costs. My simple argument is that, if citizens have to waste their time and effort to duplicate what the elected members are obligated to do, then why don't we just dissolve these institutions and carry on? The very fact that these people have been elected and paid to do the job, it is because citizens have to worry about putting food on their and their family's plate come dinner, lunch and breakfast times. But Annand Madgavkar discards the suggestion that the citizens must diligently elect their members and hold them to the people's manifesto. He prefers to say let anyone get himself/herself elected and while this is going on, I want to sit at home and watch TV. But once the elections are over, we the citizens will censure him/her and get our things done. I want to ask Annand how? Recently, our esteemed Chief Minister has wish us a 'Ram Rajya' on the occasion of Dushera. Now Annand Madgavkar is giving us True Democracy without working for it, without working to get clean people elected, this being pivotal in the scheme of things. Whow! Cheers floriano goasuraj PS: The signature below could be the most relevant one regarding the above perspective, for, Goa is full of hypocrites and devoid of fighters. And, by this time, I have passed the stage of getting flushed red in the face with reading such worthless write-ups suggesting impossible things. Are we doomed or is there any way to change the situation? Impossible, says my pessimistic friend, but the word 'impossible' spelt differently spells - I am possible'. So let us try for our own sakes to do what many perceive as impossible. The way has been shown by the villagers of Chandor, the results were seen in Kundaim and in many other areas too. Gramsabhas are seeking changes. It is necessary for all of us - at least those that want a change - to participate. We should form ward committees in each ward, ask folks from your area to join in, meet regularly ans work out the common needs that must be addressed be they water supply, electricity, roads, garbage, medical assistance, education, law and order etc and make a wants list, circulate the same in your ward, ask for suggestions and work out a document to give to the aspiring candidates - the Panchas, the councilors etc who will come to you begging for a chance to represent you and for your vote of confidence. Ask each candidate to sign his acepttance of your demands. Do not get involved in the election process as ward committees but whoever is elected must be reminded soon after elections of the commitments that were made. The people must be after the elected candidate to look after their needs. Attend Gramsabhas in large numbers - be sure your demands are taken up, move resolutions, check whether works are looked into and completed, spend some time to check the progress and the standards of the work done. Also the people must get together and pull up the representatives if necessary. Report wrongdoings, demand action, stop corruption, illegal activities in you area. Demand for police action and make your representative responsible - wake him up if necessary, push him, support him till the right things are done. If co-operation is not forthcoming, 'gherao' him as did the people of Kundaim in their demand for justice. In this way no matter who is elected, we the people will get justice because we the people deserve justice and we the people undertake to fight for justice. It is the only way back and if we have to do it - so be it. I say, If it is to be, it is up to me' and every one of us too. AIDS or HIV+: It's Stigma,Taboo Misconceptions AIDS or HIV In Goa, about 100 HIV cases detected every month (about 25 per week). The official figure of HIV positive patients in Goa may be about 13,000 but there could be more than 15,000 who are actually HIV+. HIV or AIDS is not something new to Goa. The first case detected in 1987. By year 2000 the total was 3,619. In 2003 it was 6,473, 2006 (9,561) and in 2008 there were 11,674 HIV+ cases in Goa How do we get AIDS or HIV Virus? The virus is passed from one person to another through blood-to-blood and sexual contact with someone who is infected with HIV. We do not get AIDS simply by touching a person. But who is going to educate the society? The moment we find out some one is HIV positive or has AIDS, we say ' Shi' or ‘AVOIS’ or say ‘he/she is disgusting’ or we say or think all sort of dirty things about the victim. We feel the victim is no more a part of us so he/she should be isolated. (even though the victim is member of the family including a child) Children with HIV, why they are stigmatized for no fault of theirs? The HIV related issues including the stigma or misconceptions attached to it are beautifully brought out in another educative tiatr ‘ASRO ZAI’ by Agnelo de Borim together with his troupe, Tornatteacho Ekvott, Borda Margao Staged at Kala Academy on 2nd Oct. 2009, as part of 35th Tiatr Competition The main victim in this case was a little girl - The school does not want her (due to the pressure of the other kids parents) - The domestic help who was a very good friend and playmate of the kid, would now not touch her He would pour the drinking water into her jug from a distant (very touching scene). -Her African grand father, who just come down, raised the child in his arms but the moment he finds out she is HIV+, he swiftly put her down (another touching scene). - Wile the parent fights over the issue , their child come to their rescue in deciding whose fault it was.. She plays the game by chanting ‘Aptti Dhoptti Haymchem Pan, Gal go Bebi Mhojem Naum, apo jinga po kari-meri po’ which, despite playing twice, it indicated the child herself. Ok, it’s my fault. Pease don’t fight now. The tiatr was good and it is highly recommended that such educative tiatr are shown at every school or village level to bring about the awareness amongst the people regarding the misconceptions of transmission of AIDS The tiatr is directed by Avisnah Chari and the main role played by Rupesh Jogle (Father/Victim), Jenifer Gonsalves (Mother/Victim), Baby Chiquita Fernades (Child/victim), Pobre Dias (Doctor), Domnic Rodrigues (African grandfather) Playwright’s brother Armando Fernandes and Natty Gomes played comedy roles. It had about 13 songs. Beautifully sung by sisters Preethi Deepti Coutinho, Suzetta Pereira, Joslin Gracias and Matilda Colaco. [Goanet] GOA-KERALA-NAGALAND CHRISTIANS SAFE FROM RIGHT WING HINDUTVA FORCES.
Sir, Except for Goa-Kerala-Nagaland where Christians are in sizeable numbers and also have some form of state protection in all other states in India christians are few in numbers and live under permanent threat from the right wing Hindutva / Hitlerite forces. Under such circumstances it is important that christians in these states form their own self defence groups in every parish and in every village so that they will be in a position to protect their lives, families, livelihoods, properties, churches as and when the right wing hindutva forces decide to replicate the kandhmal experiment in their parish/village. But putting all the blame on the right wing hindutva forces is not justified the reason for this is that christian missionaires are also provoking the right wing hindutva forces by indulging in allurement based coversion activities. If the christian missionaries are not indulging in allurement based conversion activities then they should explain why they are opposing the anti-conversion laws and why they are operating only where the poorest of the poor people live and why they are demanding reservations only for dalits/sc/st christians and why they are utilizing all their foreign funds to serve only poor non-christians. The Clergy including Bishops and Cardinals have misued the 'Responsbile Freedom' which was granted to them by the Vatican - II council of 1962-1965. Corruption has become rampant in the catholic church after the Vatican II council. Church properties are being sold off. Church finances are being misused. Today hardly any lay catholic trusts the clergy and hardly any catholic goes for confession. The realities inside the church door are not mixing with the realities outside the church door. Guess which ones are winning. The historical rituals of Catholicism were immediately abandoned after Vatican-II. The changes in rituals and environment obscured the definitive truths which were so visible in the past and left an emptiness in their place. Altars were moved out from the wall, and the priest went to the other side facing the people. He spoke in English or Vernacular instead of Latin. Guitars were brought in to replace organs. People sang folk songs, while papers shuffling and chairs rattling was all else that was heard. *VATICAN-II *BROUGHT CONFUSION, CORRUPTION AND APOSTASY, and that was the warning from the Third Secret of Fatima. The Blessed Virgin warned against modernizing the church because the result would be irreconcilable *Corruption, *Pedophilia and homosexuality among priests, and the end of respect for such a democratic institution, such as what happened to the Protestants- everyone went off on their own and started making up their own rules and interpretations. *Planet Earth does not have unlimited resources to satisfy the wants and needs of every human being. Hence it is important that couples have one or two or maximum three children. Else more population means more hunger, unemployement, family problems, poverty, wars, natural disasters, etc. The Vatican may oppose family planning but the fact is most of the teenage or married catholics in present day practice family planning.* Christ in ChristianChristian in Christ. ABOUT THE VILLAGE OF BENAULIM: Where does one begin while describing a village as vast and as blissful as Benaulim, which enjoys a pride of place in the coastal, beach-belt of Salcete? Tiny Goa's villages are birthplaces of men with lofty ideals, of distinguished clerics and several bishops, with India's first Cardinal thrown in for good measure. But Benaulim surely stands apart because on its sacred soil was born on April 21, 1651, Goa's only Saint - Blessed Jose Vaz, the Apostle of Sri Lanka. Benaulim is indeed an enchanting place, sandwiched between the golden sands that lace the Arabian azure in the West and the meandering Sal river, which sprays its East with green grace and grandeur. The balmy coastal air interacts with the riverine charm and tranquillity, to work up a totally exotic ambience, which has added Benaulim to Goa's burgeoning tourist map. Seraulim and Colva closeup on Benaulim in the West and North respectively, while Varca keeps watch on its southern extremity. Urbanised Margao and Navelim too share borders with Benaulim. Fortunately, the extensive stretch of soggy fields halts the march of Margao's building brigade. Hence the handsomely large population of nearly 17,000 is well removed from the din and dust of urbanity, content to bask in its sunny, rural lifestyle beneath the benign shade of the swaying palms. Geologically, the uphill portion is made up of red laterite while basalt rocks exist near Bhirond. Overall, the diverse elements merge into a magical concoction, which inspired maestros like Conego Antonio Joao Dias (1914), Mestre Joao Antonio (Jantu), Mestre Manuelinho, Dr Roque Correia Afonso, Antonio Francisco Sardinha, Sebastiao Barreto and others to compose passionate and highly lyrical manddos. Manddo-dulpod combinations like Bannaleantu muzo gaum-um, Danddea Caetan Butiqueiru and dulpods like Aitra' Sonta' Missa' Otam, Monti Sokolo Ghor Bannale and others are sung with gusto by Bannalekars till today. Bannalekars, of course, are a rare breed. Render (toddy- tappers), who produce coconut feni, and ramponnkars (fishermen), who live by fishing, make up the bulk of the coastal population. In the good ole days when cold storages were unheard of, the excessive catch had to be dumped at the coconut groves. The grateful palms responded with a bountiful yield to make Benaulim the prime nursery of excellent coconuts. The Bannaulecho narl naturally rocks and rules the State's coconut index with some of Goa's major wholesalers like Hegde, Vithal Shet and Menino Bakar buffering the Benaulim subyard in Margao. They collect coconut not only from Benaulim but places right out to Canacona and export lakhs of nuts. The rustic coastal rhythm is attuned to the full-throathed sounds of Hei-re-hei, Hei-re-hei as the ramponnkars (group of traditional fishermen) haul up their fish-filled boats and nets ashore. The ramponn groups of yesteryears had typical names like Paulistanchi, Manageli, Xapaigeli, Chonekarageli, Funteageli, Pozzdeangeli and Baranvgeli. The harmonious lilt of Hei-re-hei flows in
[Goanet] Subject: Accords of Timoja
Dear Bernardo, Bosco, Actually an extensive research on this personality called 'Timoja' (so far I have not been able to find information his ethnicity) was compiled by B.S. Shastry (Bhagamandala Seetharama Shastry) (b.1938-d.1991), was born in Udupi (Canara) and was a lecturer in the Chowgule College in Madgao). He was interested in the Portuguese ventures in Canara and sought the assistance of Dr. P.S.S. Pissurlenkar (d.1969) who had an extensive collection of books, manuscripts, microfilms, photocopies (nearly 4000 items) and based on these, Shastry wrote a Thesis for his doctorate in 1969. This was later edited by Dr. Charles J. Borges, Director of XCHR (copyright: Xavier Centre of Historical Research (XCHR) and published in the year 2000 by concept Publishing Co. in New Delhi. The book is titled 'Goa-Kanara Portuguese Relations 1408-1763'. A chapter titled Gersoppa's Hand in the Portuguese Capture of Goa deals extensively on Timoja or Timmayya as Shastry has mentioned as he believed him to be a person of Karnataka origin. Those interested may purchase the book if available or since I have the entire chapter copied word to word, will be glad to post in parts in this forum. Surprisingly, Shastri has not mentioned of the death of Albuquerque's favourite and very young nephew, Dom Antonio de Noronha, who was killed during the second attempt to take over Goa and Albuquerque, was very much saddened and distressed on the death of his favourite nephew. Also some authors mention that Portuguese and not Timoja was appointed as “Aquazil Mor (chief Judicial and Administrative Officer) of mainland Goa. Importantly, some authors say that Timoja died in Vijayanagara due to 'poisoning' and Shastry has not mentioned the 'cause' of his death. Trust the above information is useful. Maurice D.

[Goanet] John Fernandes Quepem
Meeting of Gawdas held to discuss about the survey A meeting of members of different Associations of Gawda Community from Margao, Quepem, Ponda , Marmagoa held Margao on 2nd October to discuss over the issue of recent survey conducted by the Other Backward Commission and which is presently under display. At the meeting speakers after speaker have pointed out there are glaring errors and omission in including the household of Gawda Community particularly of those Gawdas who are following Christian faith. Some of the members also raise a doubt that error and omission are being done purposely to cause harassment to the Gawda Community particularly to the Gawda following Christian faith. Remedio Rebello of Quepem an Ex-OBC commission member putting forth a case from Quepem pointed out so many wards of Quepem Municipal Council like Copelabhat, Betiabhat, Novewado, Bindimol, Igramol etc which are dominated by Gawdas are not figuring in the new survey. He further pointed out that in the 2003 survey conducted by the OBC commission the total house of Schedule Tribe household of QMC are shown as 741 however in the new survey they are shown as 185, where are the 546 household are gone, he questioned. Anthon Francis Fernandes ex-sarpanch of Cortalim addressing the gathering pointed out that a number of wards of ST Community particularly Christian from Marmagoa taluka have been omitted from the new survey. He further pointed out that a number of Non ST families are shown as STs. Luis Alex Cardozo, Ex-MLA of Fatorda Constituency stated that there are thousand of ST households in Fatorda constituency however in the recent survey around 85 household from Fatorda constituency are shown as ST. Anthon Gaonkar an Ex-MLA of Cortorim constituency pointed out that the government don’t want the survey to be conducted properly and settle the issue one for all . But the government want to keep the issue of ST population of Goa on hanging so as to deny the “Mull Goankar” their constitutional right. At the end of the meeting it was unanimously resolved to submit a memorandum to the government highlighting the errors and omission in survey issue. It was also resolved that as the survey was conducted without following proper procedure a fresh survey be conducted thereby including all the wards which are omitted which should be done within a period of 6 months. Before conducting a fresh survey all the panchayat should be notified about the same. Those others who have attended the meeting includes Vincy Quadros, Emidio D’Costa, Joseph Vaz , Jose Fernandes, Maria Miranda and others. Yahoo! India has a new look. [Goanet] Casino propaganda misfired
I am forwarding this opinion that was sent to Herald on 18/09/09 but has not been published. A sudden silence seems to have descended in the Goan media after raisng the controversy but probably realising later that it has misfired. The debate on casinos and its holy claims of providing employment to thousands of Goan youth needs to be revived to expose the reality. The recent controversy on the Government's imposition of high entry fees for Casinos appears to have been converted into a promotional stunt by the gambling promoters to lure Goan society into accepting gambling as a sober activity. Emotional issues like employment for youth are being projected in the foreground in order to justify and rationalise the activity. Very innocent appearing names and personalities are being hired for the columns of newspapers to propagate views in favour of this menace that is taking roots in Goa. They perhaps are of the belief, like the politicians, that a lie spoken a hundred times will come to be accepted as the truth by Goan society. A sizeable section of Goan opinion makers already seem to have been intoxicated with such propaganda and have lost the ability to distinguish between truth and falsehood. In their inebriated state arising from economic greed all activities are normal as long as the monies pile up in their kitty. The Government has taken the right step in hiking the entry fees to these dungeons of destruction which have a dignified name 'Casino' but are nothing but gambling dens of the affluent society. While 'matka' and 'ghoddgoddo' which are the crude forms of a poor man's gambling get banned, the rich man's gambling gets a license of being a glorified economic activity in the tourism industry. If the claim that 2000 youth are employed in Casinos is assumed to be true, then one can safely deduce that there are over 4000 youth employed in accepting matka bets in various corners of Goa, and should other forms of gambling be included the figures could even get higher. So why does a ban continue to be imposed on matka and other forms of crude gambling outside casinos? Is it that the poor man does not know to regulate himself and could go out of control as compared to the rich man who gambles in a club? Arguments like 'prohibition has failed in Mahatma Gandhi's Gujarat or that 'unemployment is growing in Russsia after casinos got banned' are totally basless. What about the millions of jobs lost after the global melt down without any ban from government? The problem is that prohibition is not a failure but the government has no will to enforce the law in order to favour opportunistic forces who live on the exploits of crime and vice. It is as simple as that. If not, some alcohol free villages would not have been a reality in modern India and those who cheer Mallya's theories against prohibition must try going there to get a taste of self-imposed prohibition by simple villagers. Coming to the loss of jobs should casinos close down, what about thousands of people denied their right to livelihood after their fertile lands are taken away for construction of dams and hydel projects that are meant only to feed the same high-end customer who requires casinos and brothels to recreate. Empty claims about casinos being a necessity for tourism and employment are being senselessly floated to the public. Are the 3000 sex-workers driven out from Baina unemployed at present, and who was concerned about them losing their livelihoods then? What about the traditional 'goan sausage' makersfrom margao who are being stopped from earning their livelihood by the builders or for that matter the farmers whose fields are being acquired for burial grounds and rehabilitation of traders? What is tourism? Is it about proliferation of vices and crime which is what Goa's tourism is actually about? Remove alcohol, drugs and sex and let us see what remains of Goa's so called tourism. With Goa's pristine villages destroyed, it's sandy beaches becoming shores of crime and death, its springs and lakes reduced to sewerage outlets and its green jungles turned to concrete, what does Goa as a civilisation have to offer to the world other then drug parties, casinos, brothels, garbage dumps, pimps, sex workers, criminals and disease? The problem is that when one lives in an environment of crime and filth, one gradually begins to appreciate it and see nothing wrong with it. Similar is the case with modern Goa and its so called fraudulent economic progress. Addictive substances like alcohol, drugs, or activities like gambling and sex are to be viewed as social diseases. They corrupt not only the physical but also the mental, emotional and spritual state of the society in which they are allowed to take root and thrive. The evils of gambling do not remain in the precincts of the gambling dens but spill into family and society. Therefore, all one needs to do is stop

[Goanet] Ram Rajya
Floriano Lobo writes: India has been unfortunate to be cursed with religious bigotry. - My response: Floriano's arguments do not hold much water. In the name of secularism, we have also had the “Shah Bano” Supreme Court Judgment reversal, Governments banning books, refusing to impose a Uniform Civil Code, refusing to protect the respect, honor and safety of so many of our artists, writers and other citizens, and so on and so forth. This does not mean that Secularism as a concept is bad. It just means that the concept has been misused. The same principle holds true to the “Ram Rajya” expression. The misuse of a particular expression by a political party to further its own political goals cannot alter or change the meaning of a word. That is why understanding the context of the speech becomes important. What is essential to understand here is the CM did not use the expression to incite hatred against any community. The CM merely called upon the people to join hands and make Goa a model State. Hence, the mere use of the expression “Ram Rajya” in a speech should not be seen as an unsecular act. Cheers Sandeep

3,10.09 Saturday. Good gardeners are proud of their gardens. The guard and protect the garden with unrivalled zeal; like proud soldiers, and enthusiastic parents. They make certain that no contamination ever enters, pests and parasites are severely dealt with. Weeds are rooted out... Worries and anxieties Hate and revenge Pride and prejudice Jealously and anger Fear and insecurity Fretting about the past Brooding over the future. One's mind could be compared to a garden. The list can be endless... The garden cannot be benefited by such toxic waste. Some helpful insights: Take ONE day at a time with an attitude of: Jesus Christ died yesterday, ROSE to-day and will return tomorrow Because He lives I can face tomorrow His resurection power is available by faith for asking. [Goanet] Update: More dry in Goa on Saturday
Things were much better, with Saturday being relatively dry in Goa (at least around Bardez). There was some sunshine too, and it only began a drizzle now (late night) as I type these few lines. In the evening, there was a rush of vehicles on the roads, probably because so many had been caught indoors for part of the past week. Goanetter Tony Martins (aka Anthony Barreto) had these rather dramatic photos (water to waist-high level, a canoe on the roads, if I read it right) from Galgibaga in Canacona: http://picasaweb.google.com/tonymartingoa/GalgibagaFlood?authkey=Gv1sRgCJv318PhmOD3Zgfeat=email# Not sure if one needs to get an invite to view these photos. [Goanet] Goa's Liberation?
This was the original letter in it's entirety that was sent by us to O Heraldo, which was edited, shortened and published according to their whims. Goa's Liberation? Ashburn Leron Pereira As Sr. Arwin Mesquita has written on 22/9/09 that we need to have an urgent Post Liberation. Post Liberation? Was Goa Liberated or Conquered? During 1500's INDIA NEVER EXISTED, the Indian subcontinent under the British Raj basically consisted of British India and the Princely states. India came into existence only after the British left in '47 and India formed it's Republic on 26/1/50. The present country INDIA was a later establishment of the British Raj. No one is in doubt that the Portuguese conquered Goa in the 1500's, but then, Goa during that period was in a state of constant transitioning sieges by Sultans and Rajahs. The Portuguese gave Goa stability after they took over and put up a valiant front against the overpowering enemy forces, till the invasion and expulsion by India's troops in Dec '61. According to the landmark judgments delivered by the Supreme Court of India - Delhi, Goa was CONQUERED by India and was not liberated on 19/12/61 from the Portuguese also according to the U.N. resolution 1514 (XV) Goa is stated as INVADED. We've now undergone 47 yrs of corrupt Bharoti colonial rule over our Goa. On the other hand one could take the instance that Bangladesh was liberated by Bharot and given to their people who now have the honour of being the proud citizens of Bangladesh, whereas Goa wasn't, instead it was conquered and forcefully annexed to the Indian Union, just as how Saddam had invaded Kuwait on 2/8/90. In other words, Goa was ROBBED from Goans by Nehru's Bharot. We Goans were treated far better than how the British treated Indians, we don't intend to create a misunderstanding between the inhabitants living in Goa today, but nearly everyone remembers that during the British Raj, racial notices were prevalently put up at restaurants, starred hotels, clubs, .c stating that Indians and dogs are not allowed. [Goanet] The Forgotten Tribe - MHAR - Part 6
THE FORGOTTEN TRIBE - MHAR - PART 5 http://www.goanet.org/modules.php?op=modloadname=Newsfile=articlesid=1181 KHANDDIEM Until the Fifties and the Sixties, most Goans in the villages lived in the 'Stone Age'. I say so because I witnessed people starting a fire by rubbing two stones together. Keep in mind the first non-poisonous match was made available for public use since January 28, 1911! Similarly, paddy was husked at home in a varn (round hole in the floor - hand mill to husk paddy or corn) with the help of a musoll (life size pestle.) The husking job was undertaken by two women. At every thrust of the musoll, each woman would utter: Shov, shov - shov, shov - shov, show . Do you remember the following lines from one of the Dekhnnis? Shov, shov Juana Modlea varnant far poddonam Shov, shov, shov kanddtta gho Kannpinnincho mathro ghov! (Shov, shov Juana The stroke doesn't get into the middle of the varn Shov, shov, shov - the husking goes on It's the husker's old husband!) Few villages had rice husking and flour mills by the mid of the last century. Until then, people ground all types of cereals at home on a dantem (millstone) and produced flour at home. Here are two lines of a dantem-related Dulpod: Apttun-dhopttun gho, cheddvan dantem manddilem Doilolem pitt sogllem, kombien xinvravn uddoilem (With great difficulty, the girl set the grinding stone) But all the ground flour was strewn around by the chicken.) In the olden days, for every day breakfast people ate gonvacheo bakreo (hand made wheat bread) and nachneanchem tizan (a sweet dish made from the millets.) For this, they needed gonvanchem ani nachnneanchem pitt (wheat and millet flour,) which they ground on a dantem. In the days of yore, practically every household owned a set of dantem. They ground rice and cereals on it every day - it was a daily task. At Christmas time, besides churnancheo nevreo (nevreo filled with grated coconut mixed with jaggery,) people also made chonneanchea pittacheo nevreo (nevreo from gram flour.) Chonneanchi dal (gram lentils) was fried and ground on a dantem. Sugar was also mixed along with chonnenachi dal and ground together. When grinding was in session, children would visit the dantem or millstone every now and then, pick a handful of sweet ground powder, place it in their mouth and walk away. Although most villagers were uneducated, they were particular about hygiene. Whenever rice and other cereals were to be ground on a dantem, they would place it on a khanddiem (a kind of flat, square mat with elevated sides approximately 6 high. In order to avoid spill of ground flour on the khanddiem, a cloth was placed underneath the dantem. The khanddiem was to avoid surrounding dust particles from getting into the flour. With the khanddiem in place, people walking about the house could not step into it and the contents were protected from the dust. The Mhar community manufactured this little protective item - the khanddiem! AIN'NO There was no electricity supply in Goan villages until the early Seventies. In Anjuna, we received electricity supply in 1974. Today, every household has ceiling/pedestal fans and/or air conditioners. How do you think people cooled themselves and survived in those days? People used hatan kel'lo mancho ain'no (hand-made bamboo fan.). Almost every house had a couple of bamboo fans, which they used during their leisure time and in the summer. They also used them while making the first fire in the morning. People sat either on a sopo (a bench of stones) or an umbro (ridge outside a door), conversed with each other and fanned themselves. People also carried these ainn'nne to the Church, weddings and other functions. These ainn'nne were sold at main feast fairs like St. Francis Xavier's feast at Old Goa, Milagres feast in Mapusa, Holy Cross feast at Santa Cruz, Our Lady of Assumption feast in Panaji, Holy Spirit feast in Margao, etc. The ainn'nne were manufactured in attractive colors i.e., they used at least 3-colored hevam (layers) - green/blue, red/violet, yellow. Who do you think manufactured the ainn'nne? Of course, the Mhar community! Some other fragrance smelling fans were also sold but they were more of a delicate nature, whereas the ones made of bamboo lasted for a long time. People used them carefully so as to last for at least a year - they would buy new ones at one of next year's above-mentioned fairs. During the Portuguese regime, shopkeepers imported fancy Japanese fans, which were made of fine wood and cloth and had beautiful designs printed on them. Whenever a wedding took place, common girls and women carried manche ainn'nne (fans made from bamboo), whereas the elite and well-to-do carried imported fancy ainn'nne. Once a dance was over, girls and ladies returned to their seats, opened their fans and fanned themselves. They then waited for the boys/men to approach and pick them up for the

Re: [Goanet] Boys v/s Girls
Happy St. Jerome feast to all Mapshemkars. Today is the St. Jerome feast in Mapusa but the St. Jerome Youth Association does not seem to be alive enough to conduct a Quiz competition like it used to do in the 1970s to 1990s. Miguel and Cecil wrote about their quizzing days. Now they seem to have retired from the scene and writing in some newspapers only. Why can't they organize something for the youngsters?? I read in the newspapers that St. Mary's High School organized a Inter-School Quiz Competition and was happy that at last something was happening in Mapusa. My joy was short lived: it was St. Mary's High School, Ponda! Last year, the BMX, a Toronto-Canada based association of St. Britto, St. Mary's and St. Xaviers ex-students organized a inter-Higher Sec. School Quiz that was nice. This year it is not having any event in Goa and so there is no Quiz also. There is no plan on their website. No updates also. It would be nice if some association in Mapusa could organize a competition to encourage the students to be interested in the world around them. Is any out there listening?? Best regards, Diogo
[Goanet] G'bye Goa - Goans of today: HERALD(Goa), Oct 4, 2009
G'BYE GOA: GOANS OF TODAY. By Valmiki Faleiro Chandan Lakra, Kavitadevi Jangam and Ranjan Pandia are today's Goans who won medals for Goa at the recent (July-2009) Lusofonia Games in Lisbon. Goa's own Sonali Chakraborty won 3rd place at a national essay competition in April-2008. Miss Goa last year was a lass named Harshita Saxena. Sample three reports from the single edition of a local paper (June 8, 2009): * Town Police Inspector today said that Tara Sumappa Rajput reported theft of a temple donation box at Monte, Margao. * In another case, the PI disclosed that they have arrested Mahendra Dave, native of Rajasthan, on a complaint of cheating by Kimraj Chowdhury, resident of Margao. * Fearing surgery, a 40-year-old resident of Cumbarjua committed suicide, per Ponda PSI Tukaram Chavan, investigating the case under supervision of PI, C.L. Patil. Sharada Rathod who knows not to read or write, and signs with her thumb, is/was Sarpanch of Sancoale, once a hoary village of prominent Salcete Saraswats, including Margao's Vithalwadi-Comba Naiks. Former MLAs Sangeeta Parab, Mohan Amshekar, Shambu Bhau Bandekar, Babuso Gaunkar and sitting MLA Victoria Fernandes, at a Legislator's Day not long ago, staged a play titled, No SEZ, no Kannada CM! Migrants are not so visible today because bulk is from the labour class. A family of ten could be crammed into the outhouse of a Goan's larger house of perhaps two or three occupants. Give the younger migrant generation time to be educated and grow. That's when, slowly but surely, village panchas and Sarpanchas, civic councillors and mayors, MLAs and the Chief Minister would be ... toss a coin . a Kannadiga or Kashmiri, a Malayali or Maharashtrian. It's just a matter of a few years. A million migrants would make no difference in a large state. In a place like Goa, with just over one-half million souls in 1961, already strapped with mass emigration and a negative birth rate, this phenomenal population surge translates into an altogether different story. Realities are reflected even in villages. Try approaching someone by the roadside (for directions, for instance.) The odds are that you will be greeted with a boliye (speak up) or malum nahin (I don't know.) Older post-1961 migrants sure know the local lingo and the locality as well as a Goan. As of now, forget industry where Goans won't account for 10% of workers, either because they lack the skills, shun menial jobs, or despise low wages. Common occupations like fishing, vending (check the fruit and vegetable markets across Goa), street hawkers, cooks and waiters, drivers/conductors of public transport buses, construction and road workers, barbers, even beggars . bulk is migrant. (More on this next Sunday.) Where there is work, and no local workers, migrants are bound to be attracted, like bees to a flower. Migrants are here because a livelihood is here. The demography of Goa has so changed that USA-based friend Arnold Noronha remarks, Departing Goa for a long sojourn, an expatriate, on returning, could feel like Rip Van Winkle in the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The land he once knew, traditionally and culturally, has yielded to inexorable vicissitudes carrying the Tides of History. Wrote the famed Indian journalist Jug Suraiya on April 1, 2006: Last week when I was there, Goa whizzed past me. Goa? Whizzing? How could laidback Goa ever be made to whiz? What was whizzing about were people. Not local Goans, but people from outside ... Goa is selling like hot vindaloo. And pretty soon there'll be no more of it left to sell, or to buy. And when that happens, Goa will stop being Goa and become something else. Like Ghatkopar, or Brixton, or Greater Kailash III. Already Baga and Calangute look like Lajpat Nagar market. The thought saddens me. For when Goa stops being Goa, what will Goans do? Rent the place back from the new owners? P.S: One can only sigh when an environmentalist of the commitment of Rajendra Kerkar is being ostracized in his home village, for pursuing the tiger-killing case. Obvious the trap was not laid for a tiger (no one eats tiger meat here.) When one got ensnared, the trap-layers must have decided the best way out was to kill the wounded animal. But ostracize Kerkar? (ENDS) The above article appeared in the Herald, Goa, edition of October 4, 2009
[Goanet] Happy St. Michael the Archangel's feast - Anjuna
Today, October 4, 2009, is the feast of St. Michael the Archangel, the patron of Anjuna village! Actually, St. Michael's special day is celebrated on September 29, but the Anjuna parish always celebrates the feast on the following Sunday. On this auspicious day, I thought I would drop a few lines on the background of our church and the patron saint. ANJUNA CHURCH The spiritual winds of Christianity swept across the coastal village of Anjuna in North Goa, in 1603, when the majestic Church of St Michael the Archangel was erected by the early Portuguese Franciscan missionaries who had been entrusted with evangelization of the district of Bardez in Goa. Due to their zealous endeavor in this region, there already existed a growing Christian community. Accordingly, the original church was rebuilt in 1713. The church was demolished and enlarged anew in 1897 while Fr. Caetano Xavier F. Brás Afonso, (from Calangute) was the parish priest, to provide a better ventilated interior, retaining the architectural features of the seventeenth century. The local laity has always come forward to embellish and adorn this House of God with their donations and offerings. But their most significant contribution has been the sons of the village in great number who have become priests, as well as some of its daughters who have joined religious congregations. Both of these have ably served the far-flung Archdiocese of Goa. The whole Church, including altars, was painted last month; the painting project got over on the eve of the first novena, which began on September 25. The front cover of the 3rd quarterly parish bulletin of Anjuna, 'San Minguelacho Avaz,' carries the picture of the main altar (attached,) which houses the statue of the patron with a scale in his left hand, a balo (spear) in his right hand and the demon under his feet. During our childhood we were told that the scale was to weigh our sins. ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL God made heaven and earth and all the angels and all the extra important angels, called Archangels. The Archangels were God's very special friends and were shining and strong and powerful. One of the Archangels was called Michael. He was 'the angel of the Lord', who was sent to Moses and Jacob and Abraham and to other people throughout the history of the world. Another Archangel was Lucifer, who was so beautiful that the other angels called him 'the son of the morning.' Everybody was very happy because they were with God, and they all loved Him. Then one day Lucifer said to himself: Why should God be the most important person in Heaven? Why, shouldn't I be? I can fly and I can change into other things, and I am beautiful and I am powerful. In fact, I am just as important as God, and I shall not do what He tells me ever again. I shall fight Him and have Heaven for mine! So, Lucifer went around Heaven, and he collected a lot of other angels who also didn't want to be less important than God, until he had a great army. Then they marched up to God and proudly told Him that they were just as important as Him and questioned Him as to why He should be the King of heaven any more than one of them. They told Him they were strong and shining and beautiful, and that they would fight Him for the Kingdom of Heaven. God looked at them; then He said: Lucifer, I thought that you were my friend, and I trusted you. Be sensible now, and think about what you are doing. I have thought, said Lucifer, and, I would rather not be in heaven at all than have you for my King, and so would all of us! And behind him all the rebel angels shouted with a great shout: We will follow Lucifer! Long live Lucifer! Let him reign over us in Heaven! We do not want God! Very well, said God, if you don't want me, you need not have me. But, if you want to fight for Heaven, you can if you think it will be any good. Then, God called Michael the Archangel, and made him gather together a mighty army of angels who were on God's side. Then there was a great battle in heaven - Michael and his Angels fighting with Lucifer; and, Lucifer fought, and his angels fought; but, they did not win. And Michael drove Lucifer right out of Heaven, and he fell down, and down to hell. And all his bad angels were driven down after him, and as the last one disappeared from sight forever and the gate of heaven clanged shut, a great shout went up from Michael's army: Heaven has won! Rejoice and be glad all you Angels! The Good God always wins! So, now you know why we sometimes say in our prayers, 'Holy St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in the Day of Battle,' because he is so good at battles. But, what happened to Lucifer and his rebel angels? Well, he was so furious and enraged at having lost his battle with God that he has never gotten over it. You see, he is never allowed inside heaven anymore forever and ever and ever; and, now that he can't go into heaven

Albert writes=I cannot understand why we catholics get so upset if some one uses the word Ram. This happens because we are really uneducated ourselves. Proper education brings enlightment. Today we hear catholics criticising Christians because we think our religion is founded on the blood of Christ and the protestants are people without soul. These are the same people who cry from roof tops when someone uses the word Ram. As for me the word Jesus Christ and the word Ganesha or Ram or Allah means the same thing. Kyea farak partha hai ? Are the followers of Christ pure in hearts than the followers of Ram ? Didn't we drive away the people who came to tell you about Jesus just because they do not enter your church ? Did'nt we stop buriel of some one who life long had been donating to the Roman catholic church and now became a born again christian just because your parish priest told you not to allow the buriel ? If Digamber Kamat says lets have Christ Raj will the governance be better ? I doubt. _ News, views and inimitable perspectives – On MSN India, you get an all-round view of things that matter. http://in.msn.com
Re: [Goanet] Goa's Liberation?
It was at the Adarsh Hall, in Margao, some years ago, when I spoke at Churchill Alemao's meet ( Mopa Airport - when he left the Congress to subsequently for SGF) that I had openly said that Goa was not liberated but conquered by India and that none other than the Supreme Court of India has handed out the judgment. Most dignitaries on the dais did not like what I said and that includes perhaps even Churchill Alemao. I have always held that our esteemed Goa's freedom fighters (who were actually alive and involved in seemingly liberating Goa ) were not at all Goa sensitive but Barot sensitive, eating out of the Boroti hands, including Lambert Mascarenhas. Otherwise, they would have told Barot that after freeing Goa of the Portuguese, Goa's management and affairs should be handed over to the Goans - in an exclusive autonomy. If at all our Goa's so called freedom fighters and their association is only left to beg for pensions and government jobs for their kin, it is because they have lost their self-respect and are being tolerated as the baroti vote bank. Goa Su-Raj Party has gone on record to say that when it comes to power, it will either want to dissolve the Goa Freedom Fighter's Association for good or it has to cull the fakes from its list if they want their self-respect restored back again. Ideally, the Portuguese should have given autonomy to Goa and left. In that case the clamor of Goa's Borot inclined freedom fighters for it assimilation into the Indian Union would be met with stiff resistance. At least I would resist even if I was just 14 years old at that time. :-)) Incidentally, I am 62 years of age today. Therefore any freedom fighter living today must be 70 years of age and above to be considered as a freedom fighter and must have exclusive documentation to prove that he/she was in the freedom fight movement and not just one freedom fighter signing for another one to get in fakes. But such notices were never seen nor heard of in our 'Peaceful Goa'.
