And thanks to everyone's support I have reached the first stretch goal and
am now working towards the final stretch goal: a study of men's clothing
from 1730-1820 - costume in detail from the inside out. I have published an
initial table of contents at

Re: [h-cost] Historical costume kickstarter project

2016-12-04 Thread Aylwen Gardiner-Garden
Hi Charlene
Thanks for your support and apologies for the confusion. Somehow shipping
was left off that early combo offer, so I announced it to everyone at the
time and then capped it at 30. I simply could not afford to pay everyone's
shipping so it became an earlybird offer. Once someone has paid for a
pledge, though, you are no longer able to edit the description so I could
not write it up.
The men's costume book is a stretch goal - it is a goal that I unlock when
that amount is reached. If I don't reach that amount it will have to be a
future project.
I'm glad you were able to go on that costume tour - I went twice and had a
lot of fun. Since then I have been traveling privately to study and this
time will be spending two months studying the collections and taking photos.
I'm pretty sure time will fly - at least for me getting it all written up.
I am pretty excited and have made a start already in anticipation.
Many thanks, again, for your support,
Aylwen

[h-cost] Historical costume kickstarter project

2016-12-02 Thread Aylwen Gardiner-Garden
Dear Friends

I am writing to seek your help financing my Kickstarter book project by
pre-purchasing my costume-in-detail book about 18th and early 19th century
trims, frills and furbelows - the finishing touches.

This is the first time you'll see such a focus on the 18th and early 19th
century trims from the inside out - and the book will also have how-to
photographic explanations with each garment showing you how to reproduce
the trim by hand yourself! Its been exciting to have museums in the UK
coming on board and allowing me full access to their collections in
mid-2017 and the rights to publish photos of their costumes.

Please share this post with anyone who buys or sells parasols - I have

because the boxes they were in were received bent out of shape. DO NOT use
USPS Medium Mailing Tubes. These boxes should NOT be used to send parasols,
EVER!! They are not strong enough. Please use strong cylinders instead that
you would send maps in.

[h-cost] JP Ryan Pet-en-l'air/Francaise pattern

2014-05-27 Thread Aylwen Gardiner-Garden
Has anyone here used the JP Ryan Pet-en-l'air/Francaise pattern? I've come
to a halt and only have a few days to get it finished.
I'm about to cut out the skirt extension and am adding length to it. If I
match the length of the side that is sewn to the back skirt piece then the
angled side piece that is sewn to the front piece is too long. Should I
simply be extending the length of the extension and then chopping off the
extra bit, or should I be measuring the width across the bottom of this
piece and making the new longer piece the same width at the bottom and
re-drawing the angled side seam line?

Cheers,
Aylwen

Re: [h-cost] Boning and corsets for musicians

2013-10-20 Thread Aylwen Gardiner-Garden
I'm thinking about Victorian fashion here. Are there any pictures of women
sitting down playing music? I've seen women corsetted when standing up
playing the violin, but how did they manage playing the piano? Or are my
musicians complaining too much?
I'm right at the beginning in my research so far.
Many thanks,

[h-cost] Boning and corsets for musicians

2013-10-20 Thread Aylwen Gardiner-Garden
Dear Friends
Our dance group prides itself on wearing historically correct gowns and
undergarments for our dance performances, but it is not comfortable for our
pianist and other musicians. I am exploring ways I can bone the bodices of
the gowns and still give sitting-down musicians breathing space - but still
have the garments look close-to-accurate. Can anyone offer me any advice?
We costume from 1450 through to 1900 - all styles along the way.
Many thanks,
Aylwen

[h-cost] Last minute reminder about our Historic Costume Tour to England this September

2013-04-30 Thread Aylwen Gardiner-Garden
Dear Group
We've had some members of this group contact us about our upcoming one-off
historical costume study tour to England and the Jane Austen Festival in
Bath. I am making non-refundable payments today for our accommodation
on-route and will be letting spare rooms go - so if you had been thinking
about joining us, please contact us before it is too late - as in some
places we have booked the last remaining accommodation.
This one-off tour is full of costume study opportunities, chances to dress
up for dinner and dancing, and lots of sightseeing. Read more about it on
our website at http://www.earthlydelights.com.au/tours - and at this stage
we have members from the US, England, the Netherlands and Australia -
everyone is welcome. My husband and I are leading the tour and there is
something for both men and women - particularly as my husband and son will
be finding alternate activities to do when we view costume study tables, so
if you have a husband who would like to join them, the more the merrier! If
you can't join us for the whole tour, just join us for part - the most
popular part so far seems to be the 2nd half touring around the English
countryside - however there is more historical costume study during the
London section.
Many thanks,
Aylwen

[h-cost] Historical Costume Tour of England in September - just 5 places left

2013-04-02 Thread Aylwen Gardiner-Garden
Dear Friends
I have five places left on this historical costume and dance tour if anyone
wishes to join us - we now have friends joining us from the US, Australia,
the Netherlands and England - so you will be in good company.
And you don't have to know how to dance - we have absolute beginners as
well as more experienced dancers on tour - all levels are catered for. You
do need to love dressing up and having your photo taken in historic houses
and gardens throughout England :)
More information is at http://www.earthlydelights.com.au/tours - we are
making non-refundable payments at this stage, so can't keep the places open
for too much longer.
Cheers,
Aylwen

Re: [h-cost] what is everyone working on?

2013-03-31 Thread Aylwen Gardiner-Garden
I am finishing off the cuffs on a hand-embroidered frock coat and then
trying to make my too-big 18th century gown fit me for a dance display next
weekend. Wish me luck - I've got an exam on Tuesday night so can't do any
more sewing once I've done these cuffs.
Then I'm back to organising/promoting my overseas historical costume tour
to England in September - have just a few weeks to fill the remaining 5
places.

[h-cost] What to do with 18C/1840 quilted skirts

2013-03-29 Thread Aylwen Gardiner-Garden
I collect antique garments and bring them out for study and research
purposes and sometimes for displays. I have two hand-quilted skirts that
look like they were originally made in the 18th century but then
re-modelled in the 1840s. Both have had the waistbands replaced - and both
need to be regathered and sewn back onto the waistband. What would others
do here?

I've tried that but it bubbled - because the thickness of the threads under

[h-cost] Renaissance dance costumes

Dear H-cost list

I have to make 20 costumes for an upcoming Italian renaissance performance
and have been thinking about using
http://www.reconstructinghistory.com/products/rh509-1470s-1500-florentine-womans-outfit-1#.
Can you think of different ways we can decorate these gowns so they
don't
all look the same? Plus they need to look grand because we will be on stage
under lights.

I am still working out what to dress the men in, and fear they will not
want to wear short doublets and tights :((

Re: [h-cost] Elizabethan trunkhose

2011-08-30 Thread Aylwen Gardiner-Garden
Thanks Cynthia, I do remember meeting you and only wish it could have
also been in a costuming sense, although I do so love to dance.
Dancing is so much easier than sewing - it doesn't scramble my brain
as much, doesn't leave so many threads lying around and gives me a
sense of exhilaration that only a few garments can come close to.
I have to wait a couple of months until I attempt the trunkhose - have
to make a few regency gowns for client orders, and then gowns from
1840, 1860, 1880 and 1890. Gosh, what a list! Better not try writing
that very often or I'll get exhausted just thinking about it! At least
I have time to find as much information to make my next trunkhose
experience a better one - I love finding blogs online that show me how
people have done it as I'm very much a visual learner.
Historical accuracy - I want it to be made from correct fabrics and
colours and no machine sewing showing on the outside, but the inside
construction will be by both machine and hand if absolutely necessary.
I also want them to look showy as they will be worn in shows and on
stage.

[h-cost] Elizabethan trunkhose

2011-08-17 Thread Aylwen Gardiner-Garden
I am planning to make a start on some Elizabethan trunkhose and wanted to
ask anyone on this list with experience in this area for their help. In my
past dealings with these garments there has been a lot of layers of fabric
at the waist line and much difficulty sewing through the layers, both by
hand and by machine.
Are there any ways to reduce this? I have carpal tunnel in my wrists so
prefer lighter work, hence why I've avoided these in the past. Crunch time
has come and I really need to make a set. I'd like them to look historically
accurate on the outside, but in consideration to my wrists I'm happy to
consider alternatives inside and out of sight.

I'm travelling right now, seeing costumes and dancing in all places, just
saw an amazing collection outside of Copenhagen. I'm planning to do less on
email groups when I get back and focus more on my blog and using it to keep

Re: [h-cost] Cameras for photographing costumes in poor light?

2011-05-20 Thread Aylwen Gardiner-Garden
I went into the store tonight and they offered me a discount on the Canon
Powershot G12 - the others mentioned are not available here. It does seem to
work well in low light - this is an issue I'm always having problems with.
For emergency outdoor family stuff I use my iphone 4 which turns out pretty
good. Although the Canon Powershot G12 doesn't seem to be wizz-bang like the
others, it impresses me with its small size and low light feature.
See how I go, and thanks so much for this discussion - its been mighty
helpful.

Re: [h-cost] Nahant Victorian Day Ball

2011-05-10 Thread Aylwen Gardiner-Garden
Dear Katy
That's fantastic! Thanks so much for juggling all this and your little one! I
just heard about Stanford - the waltz week is on but the dance week is
cancelled. Unfortunately the waltz week goes from 17-19 June and we fly in on
the 19 after running our own ball on the 18th.
Cheers, Aylwen

[h-cost] Nahant Victorian Day Ball

2011-05-10 Thread Aylwen Gardiner-Garden
Dear All
Does anyone planning to attend the Nahant Victorian Day Ball in Boston
this July have a hoop I can borrow? (I am a short person) I don't have
room in my luggage for a hoop this visit, and its ended up that I
either wear 1840 without a hoop or borrow a hoop for 1860s. Also, does
anyone know how I purchase tickets for this ball? We leave in four
weeks time and I'm trying to get all my purchase completed before I
lose internet access.

Re: [h-cost] SF area museums

2011-04-05 Thread Aylwen Gardiner-Garden
Hi Cynthia
Unfortunately the Stanford Historical Dance Week has just been cancelled,
hence the need to re-schedule our time as we've already bought our plane
tickets. John has been in contact with various dance groups and is
organising some teaching and dancing spots but as the eternal historical
costumer, I'm looking for something to do as well as dance.
We're teaching a dance workshop at the San Francisco Free Folk Festival on
the 25, so there's a bad clash with the wig workshop. Sad, as I just
received some wigs to practice on after chatting with the wigmaker at
Williamsburg and it would have been nice to improve my skills a bit more.

Re: [h-cost] Travelling to the US in March 2011

2010-11-22 Thread Aylwen Gardiner-Garden
So far my plans seem to be taking the following pattern. I have to be
careful to leave asap soon afterwards because I'm running our biggest event
of the year in April, the Jane Austen Festival Australia and have to get
back for last-minute preparations.

   1. fly into Harrisburg on 29 February for the 1860s Conference that runs
2-6 March (ends with a ball)
   2. travel to Kentucky to catch up with friends at Berea on 7 March
   3. travel to Williamsburg for the two Symposiums 12-18 March
   4. attend Military Through the Ages, in Jamestown, Virginia 19-20 March
   5. fly out of Virginia on 22-23 March

So far Delta looks the best carrier to go with and flies into Harrisburg and
out of Virginia.

Now to find kind people to help us get around in between and offer us
billets : ) as I fear my budget will be shot :(

Costumes Required (so far):

1860s ballgown for me and tails for my son

Airline: Delta has been recommended

The pockets used in the 18th century were still used well into the Victorian

size of a thin 12-year old girl. Can you recommend anywhere online where I
can purchase nice-looking foam dummies/mannequins for display of extant
garments? I really want people to see the gowns in 3D instead of lying flat
in boxes. I have purchased dummies in the past from
http://www.tinnafashion.com but the shoulders and chests are too broad.

Beteena, I completely agree. Sometimes articles appear that are in my
field and I use them as 'refreshers'. Other times I am learning, too.
My problem now is that there are too many things I want to make, and I
only have so many days in the week to do them, my day job, my family
life and all the dance events I organise!

As I am on the East coast, in the Philly area, if anyone happens to
know of any that will be taking place at that time or any time,
please let me know as well because we seem to be starved for
costuming events in the northeast. Strange as it may seem though,
especially since it is the oldest region in the country. California
and vacinity seems to have a really really active reenacting/
costuming community.
Does anyone know why all the action is out there? Things do happen
in this region but in very isolated events. Aside from the active
Civil War reenactor groups most others seem to hide and surface a
couple times a year for a few of the larger events but that is it.
Goal number 1: Try to talk the Glenfoerd Mansion folk into hosting
a costumed garden party or other kind of party at some time :D

Take care!!

I've done more looking and it looks like two pieces rolled around each

The embroidery is a spaghetti strap. How on earth I make that is

How about that front embellishment? Is that like a really tiny

cord and
sewing, leaving the 2 raw edges one side) which was then sewn to
the neck
edge. Having 2 strips of piped edging means you could "fudge" the

But like I said, I'm probably wrong.

late 1820s outfit from the skin out (I already have Fran's excellent
book) and am not finding undergarments specifically dated to 1828.
This is a transition period from the classical Regency look into the
big gigot sleeves so the sleeve heads are large but not huge, the
waistline has crept down to about the natural waist, maybe a little
high but not right up under the bust. Classic Regency corsets are
too short but a later corset (Edwardian) gives the wrong profile.
Any help with links to 1826-1829 garments, particularly
undergarment, or good pattern recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks.

In all probability it would have been "gold" fringe. Gold and silver
thread was used for embroidery, usually a flat strip wound round a
core of silk, often yellow/gold in colour. Gold and silver bullion
was used to make fringe, and as far as I know there is no reason to
suppose that this would not have been used on a dress of 1812.
