problem.
The update that just went out (for both client and win32 server) has fixed
this,
some clients will need to restart to get the update.
I tested the updated client against the non-updated server as well as the

Same here, I logged out on my client machine, closed steam and restarted for update

Well we all know that there tons of players out there and the content
servers that update the clients can handle only so many connects at a time.
I see it like this Atleast Valve is fixing the problems that are

Bottom line is Valve needs to add a dialog that requests if one wants
5 hours and counting without a peep... kinda rediculous. A simple post on
the steam forum would shut all these llama posters up. I dont think it's a
content\bandwith overload issue this time, more like something blew up a
bunch of the servers.
What ever, once again steam showing it's not ready

I was telling K. Mike Bradley to use Steam in OFFLINE mode to play a
single player game, such as Half-Life. I'm not sure if you misunderstood

Would not be surprised. If Valve were to ask the players and admins who
wants Steam, and who wants WON, the overwhelming majority would still vote
for WON. There are a lot of people pissed about WON being shut off. I don't
condone DOS attacks, but Valve pretty much asked for it this time. I think
I wouldn't be surprised. Let's see; continued support for a purchase I made
almost six years ago, many free games to go along with it. Sounds like a
solid reason for a DOS to me.

ofcourse there'd be more players on the Steam network versus WON prior
to the shutdown. CS 1.6 upgrade accounts for most of it. The people
are upgrading to Steam weather they like it or not. They know that
Valve will soon discontinue support for a previous version. I must say
though, I hate Steam.
First off, paragraphs are your friend. Second, I never enjoyed the WON
system. I hated waiting hours to download a huge patch from sources whose
reliability could not be verified. I hated hearing players complain about
someone else using their key. I despised having to load over bloated,

option cause it logged people out.
Problems with WON and compared with Steam
1) WON servers went down now and then. Steam has problems and hits
a speed bump here and there.
2) When there was an update and you didn't follow the forums or
counter-strike.net you found out the hard way. Steam, well.. it
Perhaps it's a way to force the steam client to update, especially for those who leave

Why waste bandwidth whacking port 80 on the webserver, something very much
non-critical, when they could be hitting Steam, and the IPs and ports it
uses really, really hard?
It's Steam itself they're trying to make look bad here, and they're doing it
