never understood the point of telling people that there will be a
release of anything sometime in the future. Or of telling everyone
when exactly it will be, either. Just causes unnecessary strain on the
network. Just release, and say it's released. Rather than making

I send these emails at the request of the guys that run servers or
server farms, so they can plan to have people ready to look after
updating their servers once it is released. Note that this email is to
the server list, about server updates, and the load caused by server
updates on the system
Personally, I appreciate the advance notice...

I know, just felt like ranting ;) Sorry. On-topic, don't people just
use the auto-update command line switch? Although I suppose the
current update in question would still require someone to kill the
server, as opposed to required updates that get forced by the master
servers.

the update itself as a whole is what is optional. Optional, as opposed
to mandatory. Mandatory updates are forced, and are required for
clients and servers to connect with each other. Optional updates, I
presume, only contain changes that do not also require changes on the
client.

for server releases, sure, but for client releases, why? Guarantee you
that client releases would go much smoother for everyone if they
*never* announced them.

That's because you'r not the intended recipient. There are people on

you don't know me, or where I work, thanks.
Mind explaining how ensuring that pretty much every steam client in

I cannot reproduce this problem. Can you provide more details, like
exactly what filter settings you have and also make sure you don't have
a firewall blocking the server browser traffic (the steam.exe file
changed with todays update and may have triggered your firewalls
blocking logic).
- Alfred
This happens to me in dod.. Sometimes I'll start typing in a map name to
filter by ie dod_anzio as soon as i type in the a for anzio, no servers
show up any more.. even if i refresh with the filter on.. but as soon
as i backspace out the 'a' all the servers come back.

Hi Alfred
If I do a full refresh with no filters set, I get 28,000 odd servers in the
STEAM Internet Server List.
In trying to reproduce this problem:
I change the filter to region (Australia), hit quick refresh, I still get
28,000 odd STEAM

This is expected, Quick Refresh pings the list of servers you have
already
The map name is dod_anzio, NOT anzio. There are no DoD servers
running a map starting with a that I can see right now.

I forgot to add, that as soon as you change a GameType filter, you cannot
even use the Quick Refresh Option, you must use Refresh All

Do us a favor and discontinue use of any products and software made in
the USA.
That will take care of your useless posts on American information systems.
Clayton
well maybe i didn't make myself clear.. i know the map name is anzio..
the filter updates after every keystroke, and does partial matches..
so if you type dod_a you should get all dod_anzios and all
dod_avalanches etc..
as soon as i type in the 'a' in anzio i get 0 servers
that means dod_a
not
And by now your useless ranting has caused more net bandwidth to be
wasted than the entire update will incur.
Next time write youe message and delete before sending. You will feel
better and will not waste anyone's time.

What you never understood is that, dedicated servers don't run under
steam, and there for require manual
updates using the hldsupdatetool.exe, while the server is not running.

Alfred, in today's new update there is a new bug. Ingame doesn't work
right off the bat. You have to hit ESC go into Options and hit apply,
then it works...a quick fix for this would be appreciated as it is quite
annoying. Thanks in advance
