Run a tool to benchmark your HDD speed. If you had linux, I'd say just do a

Re: [hlds] Black Listed / De-listed Servers‏

2010-06-13 Thread Alinay Gomez

Is there anyway to tell what servers have been de-listed? Our
communities server is not showing up in the master server list, had more
then a couple people check it and they confirmed that it does not show
up.

I don't want to spam an IP on here so if you want to know the
 IP so you
can check for your self look at our community page

http://steamcommunity.com/groups/LostBrotherhood

I read that they manually de-list low quality servers from the list. I want
to know what qualifies as a low quality server because we pay a good amount
of money from a
very awesome provider and always have people on the server through out the day?

It
really hurts the community when the server doesn't show up on the
master server list, the only way players can find it is if there friends
are playing on it and happen to join. This really limits the amount of
new players that come into the server in any week, and in any community
not having new players is usually a bad thing.

Any information
would be awesome, thanks.

They do not delist low quality servers but the ones that just use
fakeplayers and redirect to another server. If you have 10 servers
running on the same IP from which 9 redirect to your one and only real
game server, then there is a chance that the whole IP is blacklisted and
thus delisted off from server search. Use command setmaster to see that
there are master servers set on the server.

No, don't set the master servers yourself. Just type in setmaster into
the console and see if it prints any servers. If it does, your server is
connected to master servers and should display on server search dialog.

I checked your server ip with game-monitor, a third party server lister

should show on server search.

In addition to previous things i said, usually the servers where people

Re: [hlds] Black Listed / De-listed Servers‏

2010-06-13 Thread Andy C
It's rather rediculous the way this happens. I had a server delisted once
simply because it wasn't a busy server. Apparently there were a number of
people joining and leaving in a short period of time and Valve takes that as
a sign that I was doing something wrong.

Really, if you pay for a server that is intended to be played by public
players, Valve shouldn't stick their nose in it and delist servers. I've
never heard of any other company doing this.

Re: [hlds] Black Listed / De-listed Servers‏

2010-06-13 Thread ics
Thing is, sometimes your server doesn't seem connect to masters on
startup. I had that case too about a month ago but Valve did changes
afterwards and added a 3rd master server too. Setmaster showed no
servers and after reboot, they were back or if i manually added them.
Anyways it is not recommended to set master servers manually but do it
if you have to. My L4D2/L4D servers tend to lose their connection to the
master s too time to time. Usually when there is an issue going on at
Steam Stats (aka in the whole network) and the servers do not always
connect back in for some odd reason untill i go and restart them.

As for the delisting, here's a mail that was posted by Valve's Erik
Johnson to this mailing list over a year ago about delisting:

--- CLIP ---

Right now, we're not trying to provide a finely tuned quality difference
between servers to players looking for a server. Instead, we're focused
on finding and removing the very worst servers. This is why we're not
showing server scores in the serverbrowser. If we did that, we think
it'd be very hard for new servers to build communities, which a number
of you have already identified as a problem. Our first pass was a manual
one, so we knew there wouldn't be an exploitation issue. Going forward,
we'll be making this into an automatic process, with the following
additions:

- Each player will be able to negatively affect a server's score only once per
day.
- We'll add a new message printed to the server console that tells the server
where it stands score-wise. It'll be focused on warning you if you're heading
towards being delisted.

Some minor notes in response to questions being posed on the list:

- Reserved slots won't result in any scoring implications if you're using them
correctly (i.e. have set sv_visiblemaxplayers properly, or are using a
SourceMod method)
- Bots aren't counted in the scoring.
- Delistings are temporary (1 month right now)
- Level changes do not affect scoring (i.e. players are not considered as
having disconnected reconnected over a level change)
- Servers with low connection counts are not subject to being delisted. This
means if you're testing something on your new server you don't have much to
worry about.

At least for now, this isn't meant to be a method to tell us or the community
as a whole how good a server is. It is strictly for identifying servers that
are doing really bad things like lying about their player count or redirecting.

--- /CLIP ---

I'm not sure if they are 1 month only these days, propably not. However,
there was also a mention that if server is incorrectly delisted, you
could mail him directly about it at e...@valvesoftware.com

So there's that and that's it.

That doesn't happen because of a number of players. It happens because of
an absolutely MASSIVE amount of players doing that. Valve take the (imo)
reasonable view that lots of people leaving the server immediately after
joining is a sign that the server is not as advertised (i.e. fake players,
low-grav-without-saying-so, whatever)

Also, you don't have to pay for a source server. You may have to pay
someone for use of a computer to host it on, but not for the server itself.

It's rather rediculous the way this happens. I had a server delisted
 once
simply because it wasn't a busy server. Apparently there were a number
 of
people joining and leaving in a short period of time and Valve takes
 that as
a sign that I was doing something wrong.

Really, if you pay for a server that is intended to be played by public
players, Valve shouldn't stick their nose in it and delist servers.
 I've
never heard of any other company doing this.

I've made a plugin that shows the server reputation score in the console.
If your server is banned it should also show when it will be unbanned.
(I've not tested it on a banned server yet, so it can have bugs)
