I have a program that reads VOLSERS for offline volumes. It works fine for
several flavors of VM and Z/OS, and returns the data in a few MS. But takes a
minute when issued to a device in a copy pair. If I issue it a second time, it
runs fast, so I suppose it could be coming from CACHE or some
It used to be when you saw something like this that the library was in the
linklist so the deb for that library was obtained at IPL TIME. If during the
course of the day a linkedit is done and the updated module went into the new
extent and that extent is not in the original deb and you get the
If you know what you are searching for, you can enter the name of the PDS in

I remember reading a story about a company looking to hire a C/C++ programmer

program, they hired him to change, he looked at it and said "What's this?"

I have a program that accesses offline volumes to report on the volser. It

You may be right, but I had also complained that the special characters even in

After many years of writing Assembler and Cobol on a mainframe, I have seen a
lot of technologies rolled out with big promises. THEY ALL FAILED.

Did you find out why they were updating things each time they ran? I wonder if
their updating had to do with keeping usage statistics.

What if your data was encrypted, you read it into a sort, put the sort output
to a data set where it was NOT encrypted, and someone copied it? Or, they got
it from sort work areas that were left on disk and not erased? Does that count?

I wrote to IBM years ago and complained that after downloading manuals, I had
cut and paste the manual name, but could not include the "/" and it was very
cumbersome. Glad to see they are changing it. I would also like to see the
MANUAL number as part of the title so you can cut and paste the

Let me guess.. If you buy the more expensive version, you don't get the

The choices you get are UPDATE AND RESTART or UPDATE AND SHUTDOWN. But you must
install the updates.
I learned later after having numerous crashes that you can set the METERED
CONNECTION and it will stop the automatic updates. But even that comes with
some quirks. For example, I set it on my

I have been looking into the Erase on Scratch capability to erase all extents
of a data set but much of my research indicates that:
1. You must set up the data set names individually.
2. It will not erase &Temp data set names unless you:
a. Make the &TEMP name a permanent name.
