Use the LIST BCDS command with ODS to create a dataset that will show all
HSM backups, the source volume and the backup version number.

I don't know about Control-M, but in CA1 there is a utility called CTSSYNC
to "protect" a scratch tape by altering the cat code back to non-scratch.

In CA1 it's easy.
Define the volser to VOLCAT using IDCAMS
Then run utility program CTSSYNC, first with
SCRATCH volser, then with EJECT volser
Doesn't RMM have something similar?

Can use system symbols to generate the date and time in the JCL output DD.

I'm of the opposite opinion.
Virtual tapes should be used for most large sequential datasets.
Only exceptions are datasets that are required to be read by multiple
subsequent jobs at the same time.
No B37 ABENDs ever, lower cost and much more easily recovered if something

On IBM TS7700 R4 the maximum quantity of feature #5268, 100 MBps
Throughput, is increased to 39 when 16 Gbps FICON adapter features #3402 or

So throughput will max out at 4,000 MBps.

How often do you run scratch processing?
What hardware was the tape written to? What other settings are in place on
that hardware?
For instance, if it was written to a TS7700, then you need to also check
the setting for "Expire Hold" on the scratch category.

No B37 abends. No waiting for recalls from HSM and reduces the need for HSM
recycling.
As long as only 1 open is required at a time and no one needs to
browse/edit the dataset, I don't see any reason to store large sequential
datasets on DASD.

HSM Mig & Backup tapes use a DATACLAS that gives tapes a maximum size

Smaller volumes increase the chance that a volume will become totally
empty, rather than just drop below the recycle threshold.
Therefore eliminating the need to move data during recycle.

1) Set up an appropriate mgmtclas that includes the correct copy
consistencies of the final destination.
2) Set up storage class to set the volumes for highest priority to clear
from cache.
3) Build LIBRARY commands to alter the volumes MGMTCLAS STORCLAS
4) Mount each and every volume in order
The management class definition within the management interface allows you
to select scratch mount candidates as well as selecting which clusters will
hold the logical volume once it has been closed.
The 2 options don't necessarily have to point to the same clusters.
