I know this is way off the mark, but since we have a lot of smart folks with a
wealth of knowledge on these lists, I thought Id ask a quick question. A
friend of mine at work is trying to get some info on undersea communications
cables in the former Panama Canal Zone that probably connected it
By 1510UT, the only honest TP audio was 774, and not strong at
that...just traces on 747 and 828, and just carriers beyond
that. Maybe better closer to sunrise?

If your reception of 675 was 15 years ago, I would have said Hohhot,
China, but knowing the 700 KW signal of Vietnam, my guess would be them
in todays world. 15 years ago I don't believe Vietnam had the power on
675 either. Congrats.

record is currently held by Kevin S. for Brownsville, TX at 2016
miles. Oddly enough, the 10,000 watt record (daytime power of both
Brownsville and Iowa City) is under 1000 miles and either of you

Tried the band around 5 a.m. (1300 UT) and found JOUB-774 with very very weak

Both 675 549 (Net 2) have interval signals and IDs in Vietnamese on
the hour. 675 seems to be heard even when cx are not that great. 549 is
rarer, but both are 700 KW.

At least you can DX 920 more easily. I remember well the old 920
KITN/1420-KITI days of easy listening mx // on both frequencies when
both were 1 KW daytimers back in the 60s/70s. I visited KITN one time
too.
Down here this time of year KXLY is in all day anyway.

Vietnam is quite common now, especially if I can hear it 60 miles inland
from the coast. Colin, Walt Nick pick them up quite often.
Hearing a TP on 1010 and it being Hanoi is remarkable.
My best TP on a domestic channel was China on 1040, they
really use to boom into the SF Bay Area

Back in the early 80s, the band was a lot different too. 1010 was
clearer as I heard and QSL'd the old KLRA-AR.
1040 China used to be a HUGE powerhouse. Some estimated their ERP
towards Japan, as they ran FS in JJ often, as 8,000 KW. Probably some
highly directional pattern. Anyway,
For Christmas and a Birthday I received a WRTH 2008 and Passport to World Band
Radio 2008. So I'm set for the year. I also ordered a SRF-59 over the weekend
and hope to see it in the mail in the next week.
