Just ordered the North American version of the Wellbrook Large Aperture Loop
Antenna ALA-100LN. I’d like to hear from other users on the list who have used
this antenna for MW DXing.
I’m going to replace the termination and feed point portions of a “Flag”
antenna that I have mounted on wooden
I have all the ALA100 series antennas - and a couple of Wellbrook FLG
series antennas -
What can I say? They rock on long wave, they rock on medium, they rock on
shortwave. They are directional and
they reduce atmospheric and local noise by around 80% under some
circumstances -
Flag antennas
Les - I installed the ALA100N in 2014 and have been very pleased and
impressed with its performance on a 10' x 20' loop. I'm not sure if you have
seen my blogspot describing the loop or not:

As well, this link will bring up all of the
Les, on Collin Newells recommendation I will be buying a Wellbrook loops
the ala100ln I think even You'll like it I think

This gives me warmish fuzzies...we're planning on doing LW sleuthing on our
2016 SBT DXPedition to the Eastern Utah desert...

Paul,
Reading the blogs from Steve now. Glad to hear from someone else who switched
from a Flag to this loop—that’s my situation here. My primary interest is in
logging new domestic stations from the Western states. While this antenna won’t
be as directional as the flag, I think I’ll be
1566 HLAZ and 1575 VOA had poor-fair audio from about 1440-1500,
but that was it for audio today. Strong carrier on 1593 (presumably
CNR1) was close, but never quite made it.

I got good news today as I now know where my Drake R8 is at! It was lost by
UPS in Phoenix on 1-25 which was the last scan. Today John Kriner in Ohio who
repaired the R8 got it back and will check it out again than will ship it back
to me. No idea why it went back to Ohio. Great news!
Last week I sent an e-mail to WPSO in New Port Ritchey,
Fla. regarding the noise heard up here on 1500khz. I
raised the possibility that it may be originating from
their transmitter. Their reply mentioned that they will
look into this issue soon.
It's hard to imagine how a 250w station could
No comparison really. I have owned many Wellbrook antennas over the years and
currently have an ALA100LN and FLG100LN. Les did well choosing the latest
ALA100 varient.

Les, I have many ALA 100s and FLG 100s. It's not quite so easy as what
everyone says, though. Don't forget they are Bi-directional. If that's an
issue, it may pose problems for you. Apart from that, I can't argue with
any of the other comments. Wellbrook makes premium products. Walt
Walter,
I have an ALA1530 S+ that performs well, but again with low signal levels
overall. S/N ratio is great and I get really good bi-directional nulls with
this antenna on a rotor.
Hoping the ALA100LN will provide more signal level that the Flag I’m using now.
Don’t think the
Les, you will have no issues with signal strength. The ALA 100 works very
well this way, but, the bigger the loop, the more signal you will have.
Mine are from 20' circumference to well over 100'. I remember my first try
was with a small loop of perhaps 10' around, and I wasn't impressed. Big
Yes, the ALA100LN may be Wellbrook's "jack of all trades" in my opinion.
Also up for consideration though is the FLG100LN. A pair of deltas with
these modules also make an excellent phased system in a reasonable amount
of space (40m separation is recommended) compared to a Beverage's space
On the other hand Walt, some years ago KKOL-1300 was logged from
coastal Hokkaido using about 16 feet of wire formed into a loop
around a window, feeding an ALA100, and driving the old Dymek
DR-333. It's a pretty nice antenna amplifier, even sometimes with a
sub-20 foot aperture.

True, Nick. I guess my instant comparisons were with some pretty hefty
antennae at my old place in Oak Bay, and with BOGs in Masset, so not really
a fair comparison! Walt

Based on Guy’s EZNEC modeling I’ve decided to get a FLG100LN-2 instead of the
ALA100LN. I already have a flag constructed, and it’s mounted alongside my
wooden privacy fence to favor the Western US. Since “K” calls from the West are
my primary interest, it makes sense to keep a uni-directional
Hi Mark,
I suspect you hit the nail on the head when you said
Being near the seashore probably means that the signals are "beefy"
enough most of the time.
Those of us who are more inland notice the limitations of the lower
signal antennas like untuned loops and the uni-directional loops
And I think amplification is necessary for DU DX from the Pacific NW coasts
when using moderate sized flags such as the 18 x 18 and 18 x 36 flags I use.
Being near the seashore is a different case when listening to Europeans from
3000-4000 miles than when listening to DU's at 7500 - 8500
Hi Guys:
Listening time has been somewhat limited this past week, but here is my
report for the catches found on the ELAD Recordings. 4 NEW Stations logged, a
Couple RELOG Call Changes and some interesting Relogs as well.

Hi Chuck,
No, I haven't used the DX Engineering phaser. I lumped it in with others in
my comment based on Dave Aichelman's experience. He owned the DX
Engineering phaser and found it cumbersome to use and operate compared to
the Quantum. He sold the DX Engineering unit and kept the Quantum
An early appointment meant no live listening for me this morning
which was a pity, as the NetSDR recording says that the band had
quite a nice little conniption between about 1510 and 1530UT. Some
pretty erratic displays of signal, mostly at the middling to upper
end of the band, but some
That's great news Bill. I hope that you are reunited with your rig in no time.
Maybe you should try FedEx this time around hi. Doesn't UPS spell oops? With
the quality of past Drake receivers such as the SPR-4 and R8 / R8A I'd really
love to see them come out with a new communications receiver

Flags, Deltas, and SuperLoops can indeed be changed to bidirectional
(figure-of-8) from cardioid by shorting out the termination resistor.
I do that here from time to time on N-S loop when it's more important to null
NYC (W) instead of Boston / Portland (N) when DXing
Guy, both Nick and I have those phasers. I bought mine on eBay. I know
that Andy no longer offers them, but don't know whether a special order
would be available. 73, Walt

The Drake R8 series was probably the best MW receiver ever built. I am glad I
spent the money back in 2011 to get mine repaired. I will probably have the R8
the rest of my life. I am happy to hear that you will be getting R8 Bill.
