[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 10-18-- Yikes! (Conclusion)

2018-10-18 Thread Gary DeBock
Starting at 1130 UTC (0430 local time) in the predawn darkness an
improved-design 5" Frequent Flyer FSL was set up in the cold back yard here to
record 657 kHz, on the offhand chance that the tiny antenna might get a trace
of Pyongyang through the neighbor's S7 electrical noise. At 1315 a band check
was once again made in the cold back yard, and the digital recorder was
checked. The tiny FSL antenna had not only recorded multiple strong signals
from Pyongyang, but also had China mixing in at times-- quite a surprise
https://dreamcrafts.box.com/s/oex42e5yefaxsg6mab746x0hx9fk689h

Other Asian carriers seemed potent as well, so a single 15" FSL and 7.5" CC
Skywave SSB model were once again taken to a local park to escape the
electrical noise. From the beginning (at my 1335 setup time) there were mixes
of Chinese and Koreans on 603 and 657, and unusually good signals from the CRI
stations on 963, 1017 and 1044. A strong 738-BEL2 was already easily pushing
aside the KCBS splatter, and weak Chinese audio was showing up on 918 and 936.
With only a single FSL, though, it was tough to decide which Asian to record
over the 1400 TOH. 603 and 657 fizzled somewhat just before 1400, though, so
the 3+1 pips from 738-BEL2 were recorded at 1400-- possibly with another Asian
in the background. After 1400 the 603-China signal began to dominate HLSA, and
657 turned into somewhat of a zoo with Pyongyang and China fighting it out.
Curiously, though (as Nick also noticed), 639-CNR1 was practically MIA,
managing only a trace in domestic splatter. Weak musical audio from a p
resumed 936-Anhui was recorded around 1415, while 963-CRI hit its S7 peak in
Russian around 1418. Finally around 1422 the overachieving 738-BEL2 closed out
the session with an impressive S9 signal-- far and away the best Taiwan signal
ever showing up at this challenged location. There were still potent Asian
signals after 1430 but they were tapering off-- similar to my endurance in the
37 degree cold. As the usual group of curious Peach Park onlookers began to
congregate around my gear I knew that it was time to get out of Dodge, so the
PVC base, 15" FSL, hot-rodded Ultralight and frozen DXer beat a hasty retreat
back to the warm but RFI-troubled point of origin.

Thanks Nick,

639-CNR1 was a non-performer here as well, which was very strange considering
the potent Chinese on 603 and 657. Maybe it has transmitter issues? As for
963-CRI, this was its signal here around 1418 in Russian (with minor splatter)

2018-10-18 Thread R. Colin Newell
I listened from 1325 through 1340 and it was pretty lively in the low band
with stuff leaping up for minutes at a time --
like the Chinese speaker on 1098 that was armchair for around 3 minutes or
so - 1335ish... shot some video.

I would not, as Gary described, call it epic by any means - here is was
average/lo average morning with some perky surprises...

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 10-18

2016-10-18 Thread d1028gary
Asian signals improved significantly this morning as several second-tier TP's
joined the usual Japanese and Korean big guns during sunrise enhancement.
738-BEL2 was the star performer of the session here, managing its best signal
of the season so far (good) with Chinese pop music and male speech at 1414.

At my 1330 start time during the predawn darkness the usual NHK and Korean big
guns on 594, 693, 747, 774, 828, 972, 1053 and 1566 were in and out at good
levels (like yesterday), but this morning there were also modest signals from
738-BEL2 (poor to fair), 1044-CRI (fair) and 1134-JOQR (fair). Around 1350
these were joined by 603-HLSA (also fair) and a presumed 657-Pyongyang (poor).
With increasing daylight after 1400 the signal from 738-BEL2 rose up pretty
dramatically to its best level of the season with good-level Chinese pop music
around 1412. The Japanese and Korean big guns didn't seem to get a similar
boost, though, and by 1420 even the sole survivor 972-HLCA was sinking down
into the noise. 738-BEL2 had been somewhat of an underperformer this season
until this morning (along with 603-HLSA), failing to match its typical strength
during September and October.

738 BEL2 Penghu, Taiwan Chinese pop music and male Chinese speech at temporary
good level at 1414; best level of the season so far

Re: [IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 10-18

2014-10-18 Thread d1028gary

Richard and Nigel,

Considering the propagation challenges that both of you face so far inland
(especially during this generally lackluster Asian season), I think that your
TP results so far have been about the best that anyone could hope for at those
extreme distances. Excellent propagation is very rare this season, and it
doesn't stick around for very long.

In comparison to last year, everyone here on the coast seems to have
experienced a drop off in Asian signals, both in strength and variety. We are
all in the same boat, searching without success for the kind of Asian signals
that we heard 3 or 4 years ago :-)

I can sympathise Richard, as the Asians have been virtually
completely absent here this week also, including this morning.    Did
have some New Zealand reception earlier in the week, and a nice  clear
reception of a Nevada DOT station on 1610 yesterday, so I guess it's a
matter of making the best of what the ionosphere has to offer.

  Hello All,

Asian propagation rebounded very well this morning, with exceptional signals from both the low band Japanese and mid band Korean big guns prior to 1300.

Sunrise enhancement was lacking, however, and signals generally took a dive
with the increasing daylight. Low band Chinese stations also seemed to be
overlooked in the early propagation bonanza.

At my 1240 start time 594-JOAK was already pegging the PL-380 S/N readout at 25, and 693-JOAB, 747-JOIB, 774-JOUB and 828-JOBB were all at seasonal

best strength. Prior to 1300 the Korean big guns on 972 and 1053 also had
exceptional signals, and both 603-HLSA and 738-BEL2 were managing fair audio.
The less powerful Japanese stations on 531 and 585 didn't seem to be getting
much of a boost, however, and the low-band Koreans and Chinese on 558, 639
and 657 were at anemic levels. There were some fair strength signals from the
CRI stations on 1017 and 1044, but with the exception of a vibrant 1287-JOHR
the high band seemed to be overlooked in the potent predawn propagation.
Signals pretty much stayed this way until around 1330, when it seemed like a
general
damper was thrown over the band. The Japanese big guns slacked off in strength
somewhat, and both 603-HLSA and 657-Pyongyang were in and out of the
noise until the end of the session. The only signal which seemed to get
somewhat of a daylight boost was 738-BEL2, which hit a fairly good level with
pop music
after the KCBS fade prior to 1400. 603-HLSA also managed a fair to good peak
around 1355, although both 639-CNR1 and 648-VOR were missing in action after
the 1330 propagation
slowdown. There were many exceptional Japanese and Korean signals this morning,
but the best of the bunch were 594-JOAK and the 1053-Jammer-- both of
which pegged the PL-380 S/N display for extended periods in the predawn
darkness prior to 1300. The Grayland DXpedition group must have had quite an
enjoyable morning, especially with the potent propagation rebound after
yesterday's dreary conditions.

best strength.

2014-10-18 Thread d1028gary
Hello All,

Asian propagation rebounded very well this morning, with exceptional signals
from both the low band Japanese and mid band Korean big guns prior to 1300.
Sunrise enhancement was lacking, however, and signals generally took a dive
with the increasing daylight. Low band Chinese stations also seemed to be
overlooked in the early propagation bonanza.

At my 1240 start time 594-JOAK was already pegging the PL-380 S/N readout at

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 10-18

2013-10-18 Thread d1028gary

Hello All,

One of the longest Mid-October anomalies in recent memory dragged on for a
fourth straight day here as Asian propagation once again seemed stuck between
miserable and mediocre. Halfway vibrant audio was again limited to the big gun
TP's on 594, 693, 747, 774, 972 and 1053, with 594-JOAK (at 1550) and 747-JOIB
(at 1555) the best of an anemic bunch with brief peaks of good audio. The two
second-tier overachievers 603-HLSA and 738-BEL2 were back with some fair audio
at times, as was 657-Pyongyang with a tirade in the noise at 1407. 891-JOHK had
a ghostly signal at 1405 // to an equally ghostly 594, and 1134-KBS was barely
there with Korean speech at 1358. The Chinese stations generally continued to
be missing in action, although occasional wispy audio on 936 and 1044 rose
above the noise during brief peaks. The high band seemed especially bad, as not
only was yesterday's 1575-VOA missing, but 1566-HLAZ seemed lost in the noise.
Compared to yesterday the big gun TP's had slightl!
y better audio in general, but the second-tier Asians were still way down from
their normal levels. Overall it was another lackluster session, and typical of
a very mediocre week.

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 10-18

2012-10-18 Thread d1028gary

Hello All,

Yesterday's halfhearted Asiatic recovery was stopped in its tracks this morning
as the latest solar tantrum made the band "go south" once again. Despite the
auroral propagation 738-Tahiti wasn't doing particularly well from 1330-1410,
and the only fair audio was was 1575-VOA, which because of its southerly
location has been able to ride out the solar roller coaster pretty well this
season. A bizarre twist this morning were the Japanese and Korean signals being
completely wiped out, but poor audio from the Chinese on 603, 1044 and 1377
coming out of the noise for a few seconds occasionally. Since these Chinese
signals presumably follow the same propagation path as the Japanese and
Koreans, it would seem that the sour propagation should have wiped them out
along with the Japanese and Koreans-- but that certainly wasn't the case here.
603-Hulun Buir was the best of the Chinese this morning, but its signal was
just barely strong enough to identify the language. In general, it wa!
s another mediocre morning, but the uneven propagation made it halfway
interesting.

603 Hulun Buir, China Poor male-female Chinese speech rising
above noise level at 1404; in and out throughout session
738 Radio Polynesie Mahina, Tahiti Poor French YL speech at
1352; losing out to heavy KCBS splatter
1044 CRI Jiangsu, China Threshold audio during Japanese
   external program at 1355
1377 China (presumed) Poor music rising above noise level for
   a few seconds at 1358
1575 VOA Ban Rassom, Thailand Fair Asiatic language male
speech in and out at 1404; best TP of a weak session

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 10-18

2011-10-18 Thread d1028gary
Hello All,

With the medium wave Asiaitics sounding very anemic at 1300 all of the
attention this morning was directed at the Longwave band, which
actually had quite a bit of action.

153-Radio Rossi was the strongest of the Russians this morning, with
very good audio around 1330 (Russian music). The other Rossiis' audio
was nothing to shout about, with 189 fair at times, 234 and 279 poor,
and 180 kHz missing in action. 164-Mongolia had its typical
female-voiced speech rise above threshold level at times around 1333
(headphones recommended) http://www.mediafire.com/?n07bi42467tmsi2
and for the first time in October, 209-Mongolia was back at a poor
level (with the same female speech), so that 164 and 209 kHz could be
parallel-checked here for the first time to confirm each other's
identity (without needing to try for the dicey 4895 kHz signal).

A brief check was made of the medium-wave TP's around 1400, but they
still seemed to have trouble getting out of the gate. This October
certainly hasn't been anything like during the TP seasons of the past
few years on MW, unfortunately.

Re: [IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 10-18: A Victoria observation

2010-10-18 Thread Walter Salmaniw
Gary, your observations far exceeded mine. I've been away for a few days in
the interior of B.C., but I was back at the dials this morning between 13:45
and 14:15. Overall, a real stinker! I was virtually totally skunked until
around 14:00, when a few signals began to fade up. Before then, I only had
weak audio on 189 and 529 (SQM). Here are my results, with "6" unless
otherwise noted. SF was 87, A5, and K2:

189
529: 6.5
567
594: DU at 14:10 at 7 level
603, 639, 747
774: Snippets of DU audio at 14:09, and then JJ at 7 level at 14:17.
1548

Really, that was it!!! I keep thinking that there must be something wrong
with my antenna system. I have the W/NW directed corner fed loop, and a
super ALA loop aimed 20/200 degrees. I also had the last several days
recording at 14:00 for 5 minutes with the Perseus, and, again, I was not too
impressed with what I heard. Hoping for better luck tomorrow! Walt

[IRCA] Puyallup, WA Ultralight TP's for 10-18

2010-10-18 Thread D1028Gary
Hello All,

For some strange reason, the Asian TP propagation here this morning
seemed quite a bit better than what Nick (and Richard and Bill) reported.
Although it definitely wasn't one of the season's best sessions, it did
provide some interesting signals on certain frequencies.

The 639-CNR1 mystery co-channel chose this morning to rise up and be
heard, and it became dominant over a weakened CNR1 for about 3 minutes,
around 1412. Because of its unusual strength it became clear that the mystery
station's language was not Korean after all, and a check of the 1134 KBS3
parallel confirmed that it was not the 50 kw KBS3 station on the frequency.
A check of 594-NHK1 likewise confirmed that it was not an NHK1 station. The
language sounds similar to one of the Southeast Asian dialects broadcast
on 1575-VOA, but if anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate any leads:

  _http://www.mediafire.com/?ox9apgavxo7ewxv_
(http://www.mediafire.com/?ox9apgavxo7ewxv)

Besides the 639 mystery the low-band Asiatic TP's were fairly strong
this morning, with the usual regulars (639-CNR1, 648-VOR, 657- Pyongyang)
putting in decent signals. Mid-band regulars like 1044-CRI, 1053-Jammer and
1134-KBS were vibrant at times, and there were traces of audio on Chinese
frequencies like 756 and 936. The Japanese didn't sound so strong, however.
In summary, it was a fairly average morning here for mid-October, but with
some extra excitement because of the 639 mystery station's strong fade-in.

The following were heard on a C.Crane SWP Slider model (7.5"
loopstick) inductively coupled to a 9' sided PVC tuned passive loop (in the 36
degree back yard). A modified ICF-2010 (30" loopstick) was used as an SSB
