Open the view menu, enter on layout, and check the appropriate boxes, particularly contacts and folder tree. One thing I wouldn't check is the preview pain, mainly because of security risks, unless you read messages in plain text. Once you've checked the appropriate boxes, press enter, and try

Focus was not lost in this way for me in any version of 10. It worked (and works) fine for me, in what I'm doing. Now the subject you replied to refers to error(or errors) in the update process. I had no problems there. Others have. I wouldn't put off trying updating just because of that.
