[JAWS-Users] JAWS And Microsoft Windows 7 Disk Partitioning

2015-12-23 Thread Hicks Steven (ROYAL CORNWALL HOSPITALS NHS TRUST)
Hi friends,

A while ago someone on the list helped me with a problem using the disk
management console in Windows 7 to remove and re-create a disk patition.
I Foolishly deleted the really helpful email and was wondering if someone can
help again please?
I Can go in to the disk partitioning and remove the partition. I Now have
drive 1 shoing up as unallocated which is fine but I am not able to select
drive one and just create a new partition to take up the whole of the drive, is
anyone able to help please?
I Have tried using the mouse cursor in JAWS and right clicking on the
unallocated word and all kinds of different places on the drive one but I just
can’t seem to find out where the option is to just create a completely new
partition.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Windows 10 crashes; safe mode & restore?

Hello Gang:

I have a windows 10 laptop that has been working fine for almost two
months. Yesterday, right after jaws came up, I heard a question similar to:

"Hello, how do you like this picture. We will be sending you more, et
cetra." Even though I do not sign in with a password, I was able to find the
sign in button, and struck the space bar. However, the computer crashed. as
in shut down. I thought it was automatically re-starting, for some unknown
reason. Did a forced re-start. Heard similar info. Found sign in button.
Space bar. Computer shut down.

One of the times, I heard something about starting in the locked mode.

Now, the computer starts normally, as it pertains to the sound and humming.
However, there is no sound. Not even the windows start up sound. The
computer automatically shuts down in about a minute and half, after I press
the start button.

Without sighted help how do I get it to start in safe mode? Since narrator
has been so good in windows 10, will it allow me to do a system restore?

Sighted help might arrive, sometime tomorrow. But, I was just wondering if
I could do it using jaws and narrator.

Thanks, and Merry Christmas. He is The Reason for the season.

The issue I have with 2010, 2007 and even 2013 is the box where the
signature is. Using the arrow keys, jaws will just say blank and not the
signature when editing. I find myself selecting all and just redoing the
entire signature.

Do people share the same pain as I? If not, how do you read the signature

Re: [JAWS-Users] leasing a router versus purchasing one

2015-12-23 Thread Cristóbal
The leasing program for cable and satelite company's is a sweet deal for
them. That monthly fee is pretty much pure profet for them. That and the
hardware is going to be outdated. You're going to be better off simply
purchasing your own equipment. It'll pay for itself most likely after the
first year and almost always be more up to date than what they installed for
you.
When I signed up for DSL with TWC, I got the first year of the modem useage
free, but after that, they started to charge me $6 a month in rental fees.
I said forget that noise.
I just got my own Surfboard 6141 Docsis 3.0 modem on sale for around $65 and
returned their old docsis 2.0 modem. That was over two years ago.
If you've got issues with bad service already, then what do you have to lose
by getting your own equipment? It may even help.
I know for other service companies like the cable or landline, unless you're
paying for some sort of monthly maintenance, then they're going to charge
you a pretty penny to actually come out to your house to trouble shoot
anything.

Years ago I owned a Linksys router for our home network.
Then, we decided to bundle our phone service with internet &
TV. The cable company then installed their router and all
things functioned through the router. At that time the
router was simply part of the equipment and there was no
additional cost for having it. Quite some time back, they
started charging a monthly leasing fee. At first it was only
$3. Over time it went to $5, then $8 and now it is going to
$10 per month.

My question is I know there are very good routers out there.
What I'm interested in hearing from folks that own one is
when you are having any type connectivity issues, does your
cable provider simply blame your purchased router and state
the problem is with that or do they actually come to the
house and inspect the cables etc.

Over the years I have had trouble with their router and the
cable lines/connections. I know if one chooses to purchase
their own router, the cable company will not touch it. So,
what I'm fearful of is if I have trouble, they are
automatically going to say it is the purchased router and
there is nothing they can do to correct the issue.

Recommend you purchase the router, but pay a monthly wiring insurance fee
and then they can only blame the router, which you can replace yourself --
an likely at a lower cost than all the lease charges you're paying.

Allan,
I just switch from Comcast to Verizon fios new package dealand they too
supplied their own Modem.
The rental is $12 a month and for more than 3 TVs, it would require an
additional box.
What a ripp off!

I also just wanted to run my own personel router wifi and I bought an
Linksys18642 Wireless for $100 at Walmart and the only way is to buy a
ethernet cable about 100 feet long and connected to the modome..
I think, the best way is to tap into a un secure router or go to a food

Re: [JAWS-Users] leasing a router versus purchasing one

2015-12-23 Thread Steve
Probably, they will or at least the first-level techs might. That's an easy
fallback.

But, remember, your router only handles the distribution of your internet
signal; it still has to come in through your cable modem. Usually, if you are
having an issue with internet that is really a cable signal issue, you may see
issues with your other services. Also, sometimes the tech support people can
see connection quality issues from their end.

Just a second consideration Just getting a router isn't going to solve your
equipment rental charge. What you may need is a cable modem. Those are a bit
more expensive than the run-of-the-mill router, of course. You'll need to
check
with your cable company for compatibility before you purchase a cable modem.
Some of the cable modems that are/were highly recommended like the Motorola
Arris SB6141 are nearing their end-of-life cycle although Comcast plans to
still
support them for customers who've purchased one for themselves; but they are
going to replace the ones they provide. Also, if you have phone service
through
your cable company, these modems will not support that.

If you have Charter, I think their modem rental is part of the bill, so you
won't save any money converting.

Re: [JAWS-Users] leasing a router versus purchasing one

well even when you are renting the router from the company they won't come
to your home to check what's wrong. I've had countless of problems called
the company and they never came out to check what is wrong, they always
fixed it over the phone.

Hi Jim,

The steps below are for Adobe XI / 11:

Note that there are links with the Security Enhanced section to explain the

consequences of
unchecking items there, and you may want to find out what they have to say.
Open Adobe from your desktop shortcut or start menu then, proceed with the
steps below.

1. Go into preferences with control-k. JAWS lands on an item in a tree view.
If you have been here before, it will be the item you last opened. Arrow
down to Security Enhanced. Note that this is the item below "Security."
Then uncheck these 2 options, the 2nd option is not necessary to uncheck
but, optional:
Enable Protected Mode at startup, needs to be unchecked.
Enable Enhanced Security, does not need to be unchecked.
Note. When making changes in the Security Enhanced section, you will be told
that Adobe needs to be restarted, but you can wait to finish the other
changes first.

2. Launch the Edit menu, scroll down to the Accessibility submenu and open
it. Scroll down to the Set-up Assistant and press enter. The Set-Up
Assistant has five screens, but the only change you have to make is on the
last, screen 5 of 5. Go through all the screens, pressing spacebar on "Next"
in each instance, until you reach the fifth and final screen. Here, tab to
the check box labeled "Display PDF documents in the web browser" and make
sure it
is unchecked. It may be checked by default. Then tab to the Okay button &
press enter to save your changes & close.

If you are running AdobeX / 10, let me know & I'll send those steps as well.

HTH
Take care.

I did a computer recovery once on my hp mini netbook. I did not have to
boot into safe mode.
I just from the desktop pressed win key+I for settings arrow to update and
security enter

arrow down to recovery
entered on that and followed the prompts
it's almost like doing the windows 10 upgrade for the first time.
when I did it it took 3 hours. but when it finished everything was fine.
you don't need to customize your PC again, but you may need to run a jaws
repair. really no sighted help is needed unless you are wondering what the
computer is doing.

you get jaws speech up until the computer starts the recover.
after that no speech is available even with narrator.

He is The Reason for the season.

with windows 10 you never start the computer from a cold start. the
computer is in hibernation mode which enables the quick start. when quick
starting the computer some drivers don't get loaded hence the startup sound
does not play. this is why when you run jaws in 40 minute mode then shut
down and the next time you start the computer jaws announces in order to use
jaws in 40 minute mode again you must restart your computer.
there is a way to disable the windows 10 quick start but I will not include

Re: [JAWS-Users] Addressing a few Messages in: leasing a router versus purchasing one

2015-12-23 Thread Scorpio Forever

Hi Folks, I'm addressing a few messages here, as it would seem that some
people don't know a few things about the provision of internet services
through a provider.

First and foremost, someone stated that they had countless trouble with the
rented modem, and the company never came over to fix the problem since they
were

able to fix the issue over the phone from their offices.

Most gateway problems, and we *are* talking about gateways here, not
routers, can usually be fixed by unplugging the gateway from the power
supply, in other words, unplugging the power cord, either from the
electrical outlet, or the rear of the gateway, waiting for a count of twenty
to thirty seconds, then plugging the gateway back into the power.

This resets the gateway, and gives it the ability to pick up the IP address,
and bada-bing, bada-boom, you're connected again.

It's the same thing when you lose your wireless signal, you simply do the
routine above, and voila, your wi-fi is back from limbo.

This may be a problem with the gateway hardware, or it may be a setting
within the gateway's firmware that needs tweaking. Since I am no mastermind
with gateways or networks, I think it's a safer bet to just unplug the darn
thing rather than sit there patiently looking for a setting that, at the end
of the

day, has a simple fix.

Now, if it keeps happening several times a day, or even a week, then it
would

be time to reset it, in which case, just like extracting an unextractable
CD/DVD from the CD/DVD drive with a paper clip, you can use that same paper
clip to press the reset button on the gateway, thus resetting the gateway
back to it's factory defaults. At that point, you'll have to configure it
again, so if you weren't the person who first configured the gateway the
first day it was installed in your home, or you don't feel comfortable
messing with your gateway's settings, then you may want to call your

ISP's tech support to get them to walk you through setting it up.

This usually involves accessing the gateway through it's internet browser
page with a username and password, if you can find the master username and
password, you'll be surprised of some of the functions you can unlock that
your ISP keeps from you.

For example, In Canada, Rogers gateways have the standard customer usernames
and passwords, and a master username and password that gives Rogers' tech
staff unfettered access to your gateway, so even if you change the gateway
access credentials, you're only changing an authorized user's credentials,
and not the master credentials, and so they'll be able to, as I said at the
beginning of the message, access your router to reset it, or reset the
settings so that what ever problem you had with the gateway disappears.

Now, please keep in mind that you are renting a gateway, not a router.

That's not to say that the gateway does not perform the functions of a
router, but for ease of explanation, I call them gateways. You can quickly
tell the difference between the two because a gateway will have the main
line, whether it be your telephone line, as is the case with A T & T, or
cable Line, as is the case with Comcast, directly plugged into it. A router
does not. It only has a connecting cable from your modem, which has the
telephone or cable line directly plugged into it, plugged into the router.

A gateway does the job of both the modem and the router, and must be
registered with the Internet Service provider in order to access the
internet on their network. This usually involves calling them with a serial
number, or some other bunch of numbers on the back or bottom of the gateway,
an them plugging the numbers into their system and registering your
gateway's access.

Typically, gateways go for $75 for a refurbished/clearance model, to $350,
depending on the quality and features you desire of the unit.

Now, if you don't have the money to afford these babies, then you have to go
with the split option of purchasing a router, ranging in price from $25 to
$99+, again, depending on the features the specific model has, and
connecting it to your modem, which you will be renting from your service
provider.

Regardless of which method you use to access the internet, whether it's a
gateway, or a router plugged into a modem, you'll have to decide which is
best for you, and which option you can afford.

the difference between purchasing a gateway and renting one is the warranty.
In most cases, unless you purchase extended warranties with the unit, you'll
get a one year manufacturer's warranty, as opposed to a lifetime warranty
which you get when renting the gateway from your ISP.

Again, this boils down to the type and price of the gateway you decide to
purchase.

Just like computers, gateways require maintenance, and/or break down. if
you purchased the gateway outright and it's past it's warranty period,
you're S.O.L. and you're going to have to shell out another wad of money for
a new
