Hello Jery,

I am using Windows 8.1, but I should think the steps to repair Windows live
mail is similar.

Go to programs and features and arrow down, or use first letter navigation,
to windows esentials. Go to the context menue and you should find something
like uninstall/change, press enter. You will find buttons using tab, and
there will be one that says repair.

I hope this helps.

Thanks.

Hi,In both Internet Explorer, and on Chrome, I have some pages defaulting to
Mexican. The rest of my computer stays on English, but in Ancestry.com, it goes
to Mexican, as that is what it sounds like, and in the address bar, there is
.MX in place of .Com.So I changed it for a while, and then I went to check out
with PayPal for Ancestry.com, and that came up in Mexican again, but there was
no MX to change here.Jaws reads the page element controls in English, but the
text is in Mexican. This is not on all pages, or I would not be able to send
this message. How does this happen, and how can I prevent this?I have ad like
messages coming up in the title bar too, apparently in Mexican.I ran Malware

it also depends on weather you install the full or compact version of the
voices. they have different sampleing rates. so the full version would sound
better then the compact version.

I actually was loathed to give up my Dectalk Access 32, which I used
with Window-eyes until a few years ago. Since migrating to Jaws, I
love the Vocalizer voices for their high frequency clarity and
hum-based phoneme samples. Having compared the Vocalizer voices to
Voiceware, Google TTS and the latest Microsoft voices, none are as
clear and crisp as Vocalizer. My system does not lag at all with
them, but I have 43 gigs of memory and a solid state hard drive.

Hey guys.

After some thought, I decided to switch my primary synthesiser back to
Eloquence. I must say, that JAWS is now acting a lot more like the robust
and response screen-reader I would expect on such a relatively fast machine.
I spent the past year listening to a nice, mannered, human-sounding voice,
but wondering why the devil my computer was being just as slow and clunky at
times as my XP machine was. Well, now I have the answer. Duh. These
Vocalizer voices are resource-intensive and slow the machine down. Anybody
else noticed this? I guess it's a foregone conclusion, but I just assumed my
machine would be able to handle it well. I think it'd be ok for reading, but
for all practical purposes, well, the trade in favour of performance is an
obvious no-brainer.

So, what synths does everyone use here, anyway? What are your thoughts on
all the software synths out there nowadays? Curiosity question.

Also, Eloquence - y'know, it's kind of good to have the old man back.

Howdy Net bat,

I believe it was you that asked how someone can make Jaws report links as,
visited links, rather than Jaws reporting links visited

On our computers Jaws reports, visited links, and as far as I can tell this
is how I set Jaws to do it, so let me shut the hell up and get on with it!
LOL LOL

Try the following:
1. Open your browser of choice, and open the Settings Center.
2. Arrow down to, Text Processing, and right arrow to open.
3. Down arrow 1 time to, General, & right arrow to open.
4. There are 17 items in here, and you want to down arrow to #14, Say Item
State First, this should be checked.
5. Down arrow 2 times to #16, Say Window State First, and this should be
checked.
Note: If you tab 1 time on any of these options you will get a description
of it.
6. Tab to, apply, press spacebar, tab to, Okay, press enter to save and
close.
Hope this helps, but let us know if this works for you or not, so we'll know

Hi all, I have been sent a document I really need to read as soon as
possible but it is a PDF and it appears I don't have a program on my laptop
to read these. When I tried to open it straight from the email it opened in
edge and I couldn't read anything. After I saved it to a folder in my
documents and went to open it I got a list of programs I could use to open
it but all I tried couldn't display the document. I tried opening it in
notepad and got a lot of rubbish instead of what it was meant to be. So now
I am wondering what the best program to use with Jaws 2018 and windows 10 is
and where can I get it from?

I've been having trouble making the person on the other end understand what
format I need because the first time she sent it to me it was a picture
which of course Jaws couldn't read so I asked her to send it again in a word
file. She then sent me a screen shot of the document so again I had to
explain that jaws doesn't read pictures and asked again for a word version.
She is working on an iPad so she didn't have access to word so she finally
sent me the PDF version. I'm afraid that this too will be a picture rather
than an actual PDF but to find this out I need a program that will open it.

Thanks for any help.

No, but Firefox V 60 should be coming out this month. It's supposed to work
with the latest Jaws. You could in the meantime do what a lot of others have
done and has been recommended by VFO and use the ESR version to keep up on
security updates.
I'm currently running Firefox ESR Version 52.7.4 that I just updated this

Re: [JAWS-Users] I am unable to upgrade Windows 10 from version 1703 to version 1709

2018-04-30 Thread net bat66

several things to do first.
in the run dialog type in winver. this will tell you what version of windows is
running. it may of already upgraded.
several times i had a windows upgrade and it did not complete or i had a power
failure while it was upgradeing.
in these cases it would revert back to the old system or else it would continue
from where it left off the next time i turned the computer on.

another thing to check is your power settings in the control panel.
make sure it is set to never sleep or shut down. at least until after any
programs are upgraded.

i normally have my computer set to shut down after 1 hour of non use.
if any upgrade took more then 1 hour to upgrade the computer would still shut
down after 1 hour has passed.

so now i turn shut down off until after the upgrade has finished.
hope this helps.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] I am unable to upgrade Windows 10 from version 1703 to
version 1709

Hi

Around a couple of weeks ago, I began seeing the Windows Update Assistant
wanting to upgrade my Windows 10 Pro computer from Windows 10 1703 to
Windows 10 1709. I had successfully upgraded my Windows 10 Home computer a
few months ago to Windows 10 1709 without the Windows Update Assistant.

So when I tried running the Windows Update Assistant several times, I
received the message that it had failed because of a program not being
compatible with Windows 10. The incompatible program was Magic and that I
needed to manually uninstall it. The only program I could think of is the
Freedom Scientific screen magnification program named Magic. I had
installed Magic version 12 3 or so years ago, when this computer was running
Windows 7, to see how to set it up for a friend of mine. I know that Magic
version 12 is incompatible with Windows 10. So I uninstalled it and was
later successful in installing Windows 10 and then upgrading to Windows 10
1703.

I had written to Freedom Scientific about this, but did not receive any
reply other than the automated message saying my email had been received.

So last week, I tried running the Windows10 Update Assistant after
uninstalling JAWS 18 and JAWS2018and shared components. I did not receive
any messages about incompatible programs. But since the Windows 10 Update
Assistant runs for hours, I saw that it had reached 99% completed when I
went to bed. But in the morning I discovered that the computer had rebooted
and the Windows Update Assistant was gone. I'm trying to run it again
today.

So is there any other way to get and install Windows 10 1709 or steps to
make the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant run successfully?

Thank you in advance. I will greatly appreciate any help on this matter.

yes it was. just because its discontinued doesn't mean it stopped working.
i will continue to use window eyes until it stops working.
it works perfectly fine with all of the programs i have on my computer. jaws
does not. even for little things.

like not telling me the status of my wlm messages.
not reading the subject line in the message list when there is only 1 message
in the list without haveing to use the arrow keys to get this info.
not haveing the choice to speak your key strokes when entering passwords in
firefox and i e.
i get tired of haveing to type them in note pad and pasteing them into the
password field.

i can not concentrate on my keys when it is also saying star, star, star.
window eyes does not show the passwords on the screen when it is speaking the
keys i press.
most jaws users that are working would be useing headphones so no one would
hear the passwords anyway.

vfo told me they would refuse to do this because it is a security risk.
i say for me, at home alone not a business this would not be a security risk.
not telling me where i am in windows folder files.
like i am on the tenth out of 100 files in the list. i have to tab away and go
back into the list to get this info.
not being able to change voices on the fly without haveing to open a voice
profile to do this.
for many people, not being able to change the volume or pitch on the fly. i
can change the voice volume now with version 2018. i have been able to do these
things with window eyes for the last 10 years.
why can't jaws do these things? they have been around longer then window eyes
was.

Hi Fernando, Net bat, & List Members,

Okay I just tried assigning keystrokes to, increase / decrease system volume
and increase / decrease voice volume, without success. When invoking the
assigned keystrokes the audio states it's doing the assigned task, but in
reality ain't a damn thing happenin! LOL LOL

So in short, with my testing anyways, if you want to hear your assigned
keystrokes increase / decrease percentages announced audibly by JAWS, that's
exactly what you'll get, audible announcements, but the volume doesn't
change for either system sounds or JAWS volume. This was running Widows 7

Hi Fernando,

To be honest I don't use any keystrokes for controlling volume. I run 2
soundcards, 1 for system sounds & 1 for Jaws. This way I don't run into
sound override problems. I should have tested the steps I posted, but
assuming they would work correctly if assigned was a poor assumption from
what Net bat states. On second thought, when I get some time I'll play
around since Net bat is running Widows 10, and I'm running Widows 7, to see
if volume keystroke assignment might work differently with Widows 7.

unlike with other synths like SAPI 5 or any Vocalizer variant.
As I remember from older JAWS versions, this control when using Eloquence
was simply a read-only edit box which said “Use your system's volume.”

Thanks in advance!

Here is the Jaws speech history as to what this sounds like, first without and
then with the -f switch, I am using just the Windows key/Cortana search box and
not the run command, note that the Jaws speech history gives you the result
after you type every letter of “sndvol”, if you type it fast you never hear
most of that, but I left it in just to show it:

Cortana

S, Search box edit

Sn, Snipping Tool, Desktop app

snd, See web results, Press right to open preview

sndv, See web results, Press right to open preview

sndvo, See web results, Press right to open preview

sndvol, Run command – this is where I pressed enter

Volume Mixer - Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio) dialog

up down slider

83 – I am now pressing the down arrow several times and again the up arrow

82 percent

81 percent

80 percent

81 percent

82 percent

83 percent

Now here is what it sounds like with the -f switch added after SndVol, I left
out all the suggestions which come up after each letter and go straight to the
final one:

Cortana

sndvol -f, Run command

dialog

up down slider

83

82 percent

81 percent

Only difference seems to be that adding the -f switch doesn’t verbalize Volume
Mixer - Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio) dialog, Speakers, Speakers and
instead it says right away the volume percentage.

You could of course create a shortcut with “sndvol” or “sndvol -f” but I
personally find pressing the Windows key and typing sndvol is just about as
fast as pressing Control+Alt+V or whatever shortcut you would assign the
shortcut..

I guess another thing you can do is create the volume shortcut and put it on
the taskbar, if you had it at the very left then pressing Windows Key+1 would
do the trick as well.

I just tried it using SndVol -f for the shortcut which I called “Volume”, then
I pinned it to the taskbar and dragged it to the first position and when I
pressed Windows+1 Jaws instantly says “Dialogue, up down slider, 81”.

Okay, Rebecca, this is Judy and I went to both the regular Amazon.com and
the Amazon.com/access sites. I also usually use IE 11 but had trouble with
it today but I've also had trouble using it at work so it may be a browser
rather than an Amazon problem. I just recently used the Amazon access site
to purchase a bunch of stuff with no trouble. Just now going to the regular
amazon site, I got nowhere with the "your accoujnt" link. I tried it with IE
and with Google chrome with the same results...nowhere could I find any
links for payment options. So I then went to the amazon.com/access account
and using google chrome I could do it. I agree that we should be able to use
all sites the same as everyone else and not have a separate access site, but
at this point in my life I am just happy when I can do what I need to do. So
if you use that site and open the "your account" link you can then use H
and go down through a bunch of headings. You want the heading that says
"amazon wallet." The first link in that list says "manage your payment
options" so open that link and then you can edit or delete cards, set up
your default card to use etc. I hope this helps. Maybe they just recently
made some changes, who knows. Judy & Libby

Several people said they could reach the
Payment Options
Link using IE11, JAWS 2010 and Windows 10. This is what my friend is using.
But to test, this morning, I loaded IE11 and went back to Amazon. For me,
it made no difference. I got the same page with the information copied
above.
I've gone to Amazon from the link on my desktop, as well as from a Google
search, just in case that made a difference. It doesn't..
I wonder why some can access this and others of us cannot.
Since email addresses change, and the expiration numbers on credit cards
change every couple of years, or shipping addresses may change, we need
access to the account information page.
Admittedly it's got to be frustrating if results can differ, even when the
operating system, browser and screen reader version are the same, but this
is why I put this out on the JAWS Users' List to see if the problem my
friend and I are having could be replicated.
Thanks to those who responded, but if anyone is having similar issues, I'd
like to know, and Amazon needs to be alerted so that they know how
widespread the problem is.

While it may well be possible that we could add such an option that would allow
the true password being typed, it is also very likely that just adding this
option into our software, would cause security minded organizations such as
IRS, SSA, and many other 3 letter organizations, to block those versions from
being deployed. It is part of the reason we have a Non-Tandem build of our
software posted also on the web.

Sorry, but this ability to echo Passwords is risky from security standpoint and
we will not be adding that one.

Re: [JAWS-Users] the stars in password fields

2018-03-05 Thread net bat66

i never thought of third party add ons to do this.
this isn't for everyone. but i am alone and no one will be copying my
passwords. grin
i found a firefox add on that will automatically show the password letters i
type in, as i am typeing them, with speech. it does not say star, star, star.
it does have other options. like not showing the password until you press a
button. or only when the edit box has focus.

show me the password.
it does not save them in a password vault.
but it also shows the passwords that are filled in automatically where i saved
them. the important sites like banks and credit cards are not being filled in
for me.

i am still exploreing other add ons.

If you use firefox and greasemonkey, there is a script to toggle the
star and characters,
This works in the folling way.
below the password field, there is a link labeled as t, pressing enter
on it changes the password.
2. there is another addon called password manager, which remembers the
posswords, you can change the entries in it.
when user name is typed and tab is pressed, it fills the field with the pw.

then copy and paste it into the password Field. I tried to do that along time

see actual characters and not just symbols.

Hey folks.

Some may remember I made several posts about how great this player was, but
that certain things, like the advanced preferences dialog, were difficult to
use with a screen-reader. I just want to report that I have installed the
last stable build, 3.01 I believe, and not only does the player seem at
least twice as fast to load on my Windows 10 64 bit machine, but the
preferences screen is reading properly with JAWS. The advanced preferences
now show as a tree view, and so far I no longer have to hit space on a
checkbox to even hear whether it is a checkbox or not. So, good news for
video users.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] keyboard shortcuts on webpages not working

Hi everyone. Forgive the half-formed inquiry, but I'm about to have a meeting
about this and I don't yet have a lot of info. There's a website being designed
where the user can rate a series of statements on a numerical scale. The
creators of the site designed it so that you can do this directly from the
keyboard by using ctrl-key combinations from 1 to 5. So, for example, the user
might see a statement, and press ctrl-3 to give that statement a rating of 3.
Once the key bombination is pressed, the next statement loads. This is
something I have tested and works fine in both Firefox and Chrome using JAWS
18. However, one of the testers is having problems. The keyboard combos do not
work at all. She is a JAWS user. I do not yet know what browser she is using,
but I'll shortly find out. I looked a little at a page describing how one can
use JAVA to do this when developing a site, but I myself am not a developer,
and there's a lot I could be missing. So, in brief, does anyone know if there
are any caveats, prerequisites and such, for these sorts of shortcuts on
websites to work? Is there some setting in either a browser, or even in JAWS,
related to this functionality that she might have to change? I know it's not
presently a lot of info to go on, but any help would be appreciated
nonetheless. Thank you.

I started with the most recent release download link from the FS

My first suspect was Win 10 so I did a huge system spring clean, same
result.
So I then downloaded the current version to another PC using a different

So I've now decided the only reliable way to solve the problem is to
reinstall Win 10, then JFW, and see what happens.
Not my preferred option 'cos I'm very time poor at the moment, but

Thanks for being a good sound board; hope this little episode is of use

Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS install error

Afternoon All
Trying to install the February release of JAWS 2018, 64 bit version,
clean install on a Windows 10 PC.
The install freezes at about 40% on the first screen displaying:
"Status: Processing table of contents"
Cancelling the install has no initial effect. Have to go to task
manager and End Task.
Then, at the next restart, the License screen displays and the install
process starts again on a loop, failing at the same spot each time.
I prseumed the problem was related to a Windows 10 error so did all the
usual checking for corrupt files / troubleshooting / driver updates, but
no luck, still the same JAWS install loop.
Been at it all morning so any ideas, no matter how whacky would be
appreciated.
Glen

Hello Mike
I started with the most recent release download link from the FS
website; this is when the error message first appeared.
My first suspect was Win 10 so I did a huge system spring clean, same
result.
So I then downloaded the current version to another PC using a different
internet access provider, same result.
So I've now decided the only reliable way to solve the problem is to
reinstall Win 10, then JFW, and see what happens.
Not my preferred option 'cos I'm very time poor at the moment, but
that's life.
Thanks for being a good sound board; hope this little episode is of use
to someone else.

It doesn't sound like everybody is reporting this IE issue.

Still, it makes sense to accustom oneself to moving away from IE. I know it has
some decent features, but it's increasingly ineffective and unusable on some
websites. I don't know when security updates for it will stop .. probably not
til 2020 as that's when Windows 7 support ends ... but still.

Firefox 52 ESR is currently the thing to get if you are wanting to use FF and
JAWS. It works without any issues. There has been some difficulty in adapting
JAWS to Firefox Quantum, but they are working on it. You could also use NVDA.
Really, nowadays it makes sense to have both screen-readers on your machine.

Howdy Kimsan,

Here are the steps, & the direct download link for the removal tool. Read them
all the way through before using the removal tool.

http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe

1. Press enter on the, AvastClear, .EXE file.
2. You will get the following message:

Avast Antivirus Clear
It is recommended to run this tool from Windows Safe Mode.
Do you want to do that?
Press "Yes" to reboot into Safe Mode now and run this tool from there.
Press "No" to continue running this tool as it is (not recommended).
Yes No
3. Tab to the, No button, & press enter or spacebar. Now press the spacebar on
the, Uninstall button, to start the uninstall process as Administrator.

After Avast is uninstalled you should get a prompt to restart the computer.
When the computer reboots you can check to see if any remnants of the program
are left behind. The 1 time I used this removal tool the only remnant I found
left behind was an Avast folder in the Program Files, & Program Data folders on
the root of the C drive, but I did not check the registry.

you don't have to change to the laptop layout if you are useing a desktop
keyboard.
you can open the jaws settings center with jaws 6. then press control shift d
to change to the default settings center.
then arrow to keyboard, general, then to desktop jaws key and press the space
bar on it to switch it between capslock or insert for the jaws key.

then you won't have to reach across the keyboard to get to the insert jaws key.
but in this mode you have to press alt capslock to turn the capslock key on or
off.

Vicky, If you have the laptop keyboard configuration set up on your
computer, you should be able to tap quickly on the cap lock key and hear
either cap lock on, or cap lock off. When cap lock is on you will type in
all caps. With the cap lock off you will use the shift key to type an
uppercase letter. You probably already know that. But here's the thing, if
it is not working that way for you, then, it is time to call FS.

I was just looking for the key itself, which is the caps lock and how to
turn it off when I need to use the shift key.

For some reason, tapping it twice quickly has no effect. If I change the
JAWS key to another key, my caps lock key works fine, so I know it's not an
issue with the physical key on the keyboard.

I'm just wondering if there is something else I need to adjust to get it to
function correctly when tapping twice to use as a caps lock key.

not sure what your looking for hear;
the capslock key is the insert key if you are using the laptop layout,
the keystroke to bring up the jaws cursor is: capslock+p,
to bring up the pc cursor, capslock+semi colon.

however you can toggle the capslock on and off by double tapping it

i don't know if this will work with the win 10 fall version.

open the run dialog and type in netplwiz.
this will open the user account settings and you can set it to log on

it will want you to enter your log in password.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 2018 repair

you have to do one more thing to actually save the default.jss and default.jsb
files that you deleted.
you have to open the default.jss file and then open the pull down menu and use
save.
when you do the two files you mentioned will be saved in that folder where you
deleted them.
if you don't jaws will use the factory script files from the program
data\freedom scientific\scripts folder instead.

Hi Ralph,

Now that you told what you were doing, I can give you the exact fix.
When you modified the Default script file in JAWS 18 and pressed CTRL+S, Script
Manager saved the modified version in the JAWS user folder. When you imported
settings to JAWS 2018 the file was also saved in the JAWS 2018 user folder, but
since the file is from 18.0 and you didn't used the Use statement, the problem
is that JAWS 2018 is using the Default.jsb file based on JAWS 18.0.

To fix this, with JAWS closed, go to the following folder:
C:\Users\YourUser\AppData\Roaming\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\2018\Settings\Enu
In this folder, find and delete the files named Default.jss and Default.jsb,
then restart JAWS and the problem should be resolved.

As a suggestion, if your keyboard hasn't the Applications key, you usually
won't need to make any modifications to get back that functionality into
another key. This is because Windows always had a keyboard shortcut for opening
context menus when your keyboard has not Applications key: you can just press
SHIFT+F10 and, except in less standard programs like games in full screen mode,
you will see the same context menu. Similarly, if you're using a keyboard in
which there's no Windows key, you can quickly open the Start menu by pressing
CTRL+ESCAPE.

Hope it helps!

I tried the "save as shared" and it wouldn't let me.

I think this problem came up because my Jaws 18 default script was modified to
allow the printscreen to act like the application key since my laptop doesn't
have an application key. When I installed Jaws 2018 a couple months ago I had
it import my Jaws 18 settings.

The problem was that when I press the "printscreen" key, I got a message saying
something about an unknown call to script. Since I normally use a wireless
keyboard that has the application key I hadn't gotten around to trying to fix
things until this weekend. I opened the default script in the script manager.
It showed the modification I had made to my Jaws 18 default script. I saved
the 2018 script and exited the script manager. Now I'm getting the message
about the default script not being found.

I'm a script ignoramus so have no idea what to do. I would appreciate some
easy-to-follow instructions about what to do.

Thanks.

Unless you were modifying this file or installing scripts that make
modifications to it, this is rare.
However, if you can bring the file in Script Manager with CTRL+SHIFT+D, try
using the Save As Shared option in the File menu to see if recompiling the file
fixes the issue. This is because JAWS actually doesn't search the default.jss,
but the compiled file in binary format, that is, default.jsb. Note that if you
have UAC enabled, you will need to run Script Manager as administrator to be
able to save into the shared folder.
If you were making modifications, these were saved in the JAWS user folder when
you pressed CTRL+S. If so, go to the JAWS settings folder for your user (use
the Explore My Settings shortcut or go to the path
C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Freedom
Scientific\JAWS\version\Settings\enu), and delete the default.jsb file in this
folder if it exists. If you use JAWS in a language other than English, change
Enu for the three letter abbreviation of your language, for example ESN for
Spanish.

Hope it helps!

I know this topic came up here some time ago, but I'm afraid it wasn't
relevant to me at the time and wasn't a thread I took the time to read. So,
sorry for bringing it up again.

But yes, I was just wondering about this. I understand that there often *is*
"clickable" text on a webpage, and JAWS is trying to inform me of this fact.
But on many pages, every line will say "clickable", even though there is
nothing to click/nothing happens when you click. Why is this? And can I get
a happy medium somewhere? Obviously I don't want to miss important
information about a page, but when I'm reading a wikipedia article or IMDB
review or something and hear "clickable, clickable, clickable", on what
appears to be static text - that just seems like weird, excessive noise.

Hi Vicki,

After opening the "empty" pdf, hit JAWSKey+spacebar followed by "od"
(without the quotes).
This invokes the OCR document scan. It will take a bit of time for the
scan, depending on the size of your document.
The result is then displayed in the virtual viewer.
If you wanted to, once the scan is complete, you could select all of the
text, copy it to the clipboard and paste it into a text file.

Insert+Spacebar
Release to hear a click sound
Press the letter O
release
Press the letter D
release
You should hear a response that it is working

I recall that this was available in JAWS 17 or later.

The particular pdf does contain images and print. Would that make a

That seems a bit vague, even to me. Do you bring up the file list in the
"Open" dialog of Notepad? If so, you also need to change the file type to
"all files" to see any PDF document.

I'm thinking that your idea is based on JAWS 2018 with the capability to
recognize a PDF file directly from a file list in Windows Explorer, and not
opening it. If so, then Notepad has nothing to do with the process -- the
virtual viewer will come up without having Notepad open.

I'm not sure the requester has said what version of JAWS is being used.

Also the context menu that pops up does not say "OCR" it instead says
"Recognize with JAWS".

You wouldn't have to find it on the desktop. Just hit windows key+r, and
type in "jaws17" or "jaws18", depending on what version you want. Then,
there it is. Considering that every JAWS install removes the shortcut, and
how often they have updates nowadays, I just stopped bothering with the
shortcut altogether, and just use the run command, which always works so
long as File Explorer is running.

in both places when this dialog appears just press the escape key.
I know for a fact that all my passwords are correct in both my server and in

day and then again I could go for a week or two and never have an issue also
I have had to dis connect my router for a minute and re connect it and it
works well with no issues.
I have also found another problem, sometime my WLM won't send any messages
and what I do there is close the program and re open it and it works
correctly.
I suppose this is caused by Microsoft no longer supporting the program and
because we are using it in windows 10 it may not function in windows

Caps-lock to be your Jawskey, but if you have a number pad on your laptop,
that will still also work.

Hi.

I don't know if I have ever gotten this popup. I do get a message from
google on their main page sometimes, but it does not look like a popup or
dialog box. However, maybe JAWS isn't seeing it for some reason? I guess
though this would come from google? Google *is* my homepage, so I guess that
does seem reasonable. Maybe if I set my homepage to something else, this
Chrome thing will not come up?

Yes, I do have the 64-bit version of ESR. Maybe I will try grabbing the
other one. I thought the stability issue was mostly to do with ad-ons, but
actually I have been getting bugged from webvism to log in to my account,
whose details I've forgotten...I suppose that add-on might be causing some

Subject: [JAWS-Users] strange issue with links not activating properly in
Firefox after switching to ESR version

Hey everyone.
I'm running JAWS 18 on a Windows 10, 64-bit machine. Last week, my Firefox
was updated to the Quantum, version 57, release. As has been discussed on
this list, there are issues with accessibility with this version of the
programme, and although I found it worked *almost* fine with NVDA, it did
not work at all with JAWS, which I'm not entirely ready to give up using or
anything. So, I decided to switch to the 52 (ESR) version, as recommended by
many people and accessibility blogs. Instalation seemed to go fine, but I
found that although I could go to a website without problems using ctrl-l,
and sometimes search for something on that site, links would not activate
with the enter key-press. JAWS definitely recognises that a link is there
and I think the cursor is in the right place. I can also activate the links
using the context menu, in a new tab or window. But enter simply does
nothing. Another weird thing I noticed is that when this is happening,
alt-f4 will not close firefox, and I must do it with the programme's menu
option.

I uninstalled Firefox altogether this time, as the first time I just tried
to install v.52 over v.57 without uninstalling the programme, which is
*supposed* to work. But starting fresh is sometimes good, right? Well, to my
joy, the programme (firefox) seemed to be working great for a couple of
days. This afternoon though, when I loaded the browser to check the mobile
facebook site, once again, links would not activate with the enter key and
the programme wouldn't close normally. I'm not positive these two things are
related, but thinking about it now, I almost always close programmes with
alt-f4 and I'm quite sure this is how I always closed firefox until now.

Anyone have any clues as to what the devil might be going on? I'm going to
have to switch permanently to Chrome if this keeps up. I even went to
internet Explorer for a bit, but a lot of sites I go to regularly, like
goodreads.com, simply do not work properly with that browser anymore, and
it's very definitely being phased out by mS in favour of Edge, so I'd rather
just put it to sleep permanently. Firefox has been my go-to browser for
years anyway and I don't think I've ever had any issues like this, until
now.

Thanks.

I am unable to install JAWS 2018 on either computer. I am up to date on
everything.

I am using Windows 7 pro.

I am using Nod32 as my antivirus, but have never had a problem with that

Any suggestions as to what to try?

if its the newest adobe dc its in the edit pull down in accessibility.
1 problem though. if you have a large document it will take a long time for it
to load.
i tried a 174 page document and it took 2 minutes to load and about 20 seconds
before jaws started talking
i also tried some searches for words at the bottom of the file and jaws control
c only found the words when i turned off single page mode.

I couldn’t find that setting either to double check it. When you first start
Adobe acrobat reader, you do get that Accessibility wizard. I was a little bit
confused with that, but I did tell it to read all pages. But then there was
something about should I display continuously or as a single page. I picked
single page. Because I thought the telling if I wanted to read all pages even
in large documents where is sufficient. Now I can’t find the screen
Accessibility thing again to go through it. I’ve certainly done through the
menus and really can’t find it. Hopefully this jaws control F will do it.

What works is adding the JAWS key to the control-f command, all three at

I have read the jaws help regarding using jaws with acrobat acrobat reader.
There was no mention made of using the find command, but since it works in
HTML documents on the Internet, I assumed it would also work in PDF files. So
if I do a control F, then type in a word or phrase I know is in a PDF
document, I expect to be moved there. That is not happening. What am I doing
wrong and how can I fix it?

You could use a program like Laplink PcMover to migrate a lot of stuff from
your old pc to a new one; it will transfer all your data and many different
programs. Some programs, like Microsoft Office, may transfer but you'd only
need to enter the activation number or product key.

Supposedly, if you do an in-place upgrade, which is the procedure you are
proposing, theoretically, you won't lose your data or programs. But, you'd
need to have a backup, because, there's no guaranty when you do that
in-place upgrade.

But, I would think that you would be confront the same difficulty you
currently have, because an In-place repair will probably only use stock
network drivers, and you're saying the network driver for your card is no
longer available.

If you want to use your same programs and pc, you might consider a
usb-to-ethernet adapter.

First I really do not want to purchase a new machine at this time. The
problem that I have with my network drivers microsoft can not correct. The
computer is a 2009 machine running win 7 32 bit. The corrupted driver can
not be updated or reinstalled. the manufacturer no longer has a 32 bit
driver on their web site. One thing that I am not sure of is if I could use
my origional 32 bit windows install to run a repair and keep all of my files
and programs. If that would work I would go that way. Microsoft is willing
to create a product key and download the 64 bit os and install it on my
machine.I hate to go through the work to reinstall programs and try to
recover product keys and all emails on the new os. Now for me it would be
the same amount of work if I purchased a new desktop.

Hello list,

Screen reader issues with the coming Firefox 57 aside, I know some add-ons
are going to stop working regardless when these pending problems are
resolved.

For years, Ive been using the PlainOldFavorites extension and while I
havent actually used IE in forever, Ive always liked IEs favorites layout
simplicity

In any event, Ive recently been trying to work with Firefox bookmarks and
am dealing with a frustrating issue. There appear to be some bookmarks that
no matter how much I try to delete/get rid of them, theyre still showing up
in my bookmarks menu. This is making jumping to a bookmark by the first
letter tedious and much longer than when working in IEs favorites layout.
They seem to be showing up right after the most recent bookmarked option. Be
it deleted folders or unsorted bookmarks.

Was just wondering if Im missing something on how to better sort the
Firefox bookmarks menu or if this is just going to be a part of dealing with
this feature? I do already have bookmarks set to sort by name.

Using the latest JFW 2018 recently released and am on Firefox 56.X. Ive
already disabled the automatic update in Firefox and will only update once
the noted screen reader issues are finally resolved.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Cristobal

one thing i do when i save bookmarks i give them my own description at the
begginning of the line before i save them. like clothes, cd, blind product etc.
this makes it a little easier to find the bookmarks you want.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Trying to figure out Firefox bookmarks

Thanks,

Cristobal

I don't have a reason to undo it, because it just enables sound card
on safe boot, I might need it again.
anyway you can create a registry backup before merging it, and apply
the restore after done with safe boot.

Its a registry file if merged, would enable audio on many PC and

I'd assume it works with many more brands.
That way screen readers work just fine to preform any task requires

Its been tested for bad code no negative signs found.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Problem trying to repair Jaws 18 before upgrading to V
2018

Hello list,

So, Ive been dealing with this issue since Jaws 18 was put out on 9/26/17.
Along with the Outlook address thing that later got fixed, I was having
trouble when replying or forwarding message in Outlook. Arrowing down was
not possible. Jaws would behave as though I was at the bottom of the screen.
Even if I arrowed up once and then tried going back down to the line I was
previously at, Id encounter that same barrier. Navigating the message body
of text with the read by paragraph or sentence commands, Jaws worked as
always. It was just the read/navigate by line that was giving me problems.

VFO tech support emailed me instructing that I should try doing a Jaws
repair. Do the copy path from my JFW .exe file and add the / type repair at
the end in the run dialog box.

As I saw that Jaws 2018 came out today, I figured Id try to get this
resolved. I for one reason or another hadnt had the chance to go through
with the repair, but figured I should try addressing it before upgrading to
JFW 2018.

In any event, I went through the repair process earlier today and along with
all the other typical Jaws chatter when doing an installation (I was using a
JFW.exe file from October that addressed the Outlook issue), I heard Jaws
say something about a sentinel system driver not being copied. By the end of
the process I then got the following error message:

The JAWS setup package could not install the required component

JAWSRepair. The process will now exit.

OK

I already wrote VFO back about this, but as its Jaws 2018 release day, I
dont expect a follow up any time soon as Im sure theyll be dealing with
all sorts of stuff related to that.

Anyone have an idea on what this is or how to fix it?

Thanks,

Cristobal

Re: [JAWS-Users] external hard drive is dead

2017-10-19 Thread net bat66

that is not all that is involved.
it depends on what failed. if its a failed interface card in the external case
they would just put the drive in another case and send it back.

or use software to try to copy the data to another drive.
anything else requires the use of a clean room environment
they would have to take the drive appart.
if its the drive interface they would try to use another interface card on the
old drive to see if they could retrieve the data and copy it to a new drive.
if the drive motor is bad they would have to remove the drive platters,
install them into another drive of the same model and try to retrieve the data
this way with software.
thats why they charge so much. and if they were to have to install a new drive
for you in your computer it would cost even more.
even then you may not get all of your files back. chances are you would still
have to re install jaws and all your other programs to get everything back the
way it was.

the down arrow on the number pad it always goes to the bottom of file instead
of down to the next line.

it works on windows 10 that i just installed. but not with windows 7.
thanks for help
