Hmmm... I thought only the JBoss Group services were a for-profit
project, whereas the JBoss open source server was a non-profit project.
But maybe I am wrong in this distinction?

I haven't looked at the code, I've just been thinking about how to make the
jboss tm distributed.
First, until the jboss tm is distributed, it seems to me that problems
invoking an ejb on another server from inside a tx using the jboss tm are
appropriate, since the tx can't be propagated.

The question is not should but can? :-)
The spec requires the MBeanServer to invoke the ModelMBean's
pre/post[De]Register. It is silent on whether the ModelMBean
forwards that to the pojo.
The pojo implementing the interface should be enough configuration
shouldn't it?

Tyrex has makes use of the OTS (jts corba stuff) and has a
TransactionPropogationContext (TPC) which wraps the OTS propogation
