That the settings now set (but maybe not applied yet) correspond to my
expectations. For example, that the right/left handed button order works as I
expect, or that double click is fast enough.

[systemsettings] [Bug 400076] New: Add testing area to mouse settings

2018-10-20 Thread Andrei Rybak
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=400076

Bug ID: 400076
Summary: Add testing area to mouse settings
   Product: systemsettings
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: Kubuntu Packages
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: wishlist
  Priority: NOR
 Component: kcm_mouse
  Assignee: unassigned-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: rybak@gmail.com
CC: unassigned-b...@kde.org
  Target Milestone: ---

There is a "Testing area" panel in "Touchpad — System Settings Module" window.
It would be useful to have a similar testing area in "Mouse — System Settings
Module" window.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open KDE launcher
2. Type "mouse"
3. Press enter key or use mouse to launch "Mouse — System Settings Module"
window
4. Observe the opened window

OBSERVED RESULT
There is no way to test the mouse settings in the opened window.

EXPECTED RESULT
There is a "Testing area" panel similar to the one used in "Touchpad — System
Settings Module" window.

[systemsettings] [Bug 400076] Add testing area to mouse settings

2019-03-31 Thread Andrei Rybak
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=400076

Just to clarify: I was very surprised that the testing area already present in
Touchpad settings is not reused in Mouse settings, as pretty much all other DEs
I've used before provide such a testing area for any pointer device settings
menu (sometimes Mouse & Touchpad settings are closer together).

I'm sorry if I didn't make myself clear in the bug report. This crash was not
caught by crash assistant (like Kdenlive crash in my other bug report
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=407844). Therefore, there is no backtrace
that I could provide.

[kwin] [Bug 408610] KWin shortcut "Show Desktop Grid" does not work

2019-06-12 Thread Andrei Rybak
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=408610

Fixed it on my machine by:

1. Go to System Settings → Display and Monitor → Compositor
2. Get rid of a warning about OpenGL detection
3. Turn "Tearing prevention" from Automatic to Full screen repains
4. Click Apply
5. Turn "Tearing prevention" back to Automatic
6. Click Apply

Figured it out using experience from
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=406703

I do not know why or how operability of shortcuts depends on this. Maybe the
compositor was not started despite "Enable compositor on startup" being checked
(as per https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=406703)?

>From my (stupid user) point of view, this situation definitely seems like a
bug: I turn a shortcut on, but the system doesn't even warn me that for the
shortcut to work I need some other magic turned on elsewhere.

[kwin] [Bug 406703] VSync setting does not work after reboot

> If you enable compositing as well set tearing prevention back to "Automatic",
> does screen tearing occur?

With the "Automatic" settings, the screen tearing does not occur. Thank you for
fixing my setup — turns out I didn't actually need "Full screen repaints".

Off-topic:
It would seem that the *UX* for checkbox "Enable compositor on startup" could
be improved. It was not clear at all to me, that all the settings below this
checkbox depend on it being turned on. I would have expected for this checkbox
to get selected automatically when you change anything else on that screen.
Especially since "compositor" actually turns itself on automatically when you
touch these settings (as logs in the comment above have shown). Another
possible approach would be to show a big warning at the bottom of the dialog
(near "Apply" button):

> The settings will be reset on restart, if you don't check the checkbox
> "Enable compositor on startup".

[kdenlive] [Bug 407815] kdenlive version 19.04.1 cannot be installed from ppa:kdenlive/kdenlive-stable

2019-05-21 Thread Andrei Rybak
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=407815

I missed a step in "STEPS TO REPRODUCE" between step 2 and 3, there should be
another step:

2.5. sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade kdenlive

And the observed result for this command is:
> Reading package lists... Done
> Building dependency tree
> Reading state information... Done
> kdenlive is already the newest version (4:17.12.3-0ubuntu1)

I just realized, that this PPA explicitly does not provide packages for Ubuntu
18.04 aka "Bionic":

> Unfortunately, the QML parts are not reliable with Qt versions below 5.11, so
> bionic is out of scope (18.04 LTS, basis for several derivatives).

Marking this as RESOLVED and INTENTIONAL. Please changes it if other status is
more appropriate.

I'll try to get this next time I reboot.

2020-04-15 Thread Andrei Rybak
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=420131

Bug ID: 420131
Summary: Dran-n-drop for a URL onto .desktop icon does not open
the URL
   Product: plasmashell
   Version: 5.16.5
  Platform: Kubuntu Packages
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: k...@davidedmundson.co.uk

  Target Milestone: 1.0

Created attachment 127569
  --> https://bugs.kde.org/attachment.cgi?id=127569=edit
Screen recording of the bug reproduction

SUMMARY
When drugging a URL onto a .desktop icon, the application does not open in 100%
of cases.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open a web page in a browser
2. Drag some hyperlink onto browsers's icon (.desktop file)

OBSERVED RESULT
Most of the time, the context menu for the directory where the .desktop file is
located is opened (e.g. $HOME/Desktop).

EXPECTED RESULT
100% of the time, the application is opened with the dragged URL as argument.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: Kubuntu 19.10
KDE Plasma Version: 5.16.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.62.0
Qt Version: 5.12.4
Kernel Version: 5.3.0-46-generic
OS Type: 64-bit
Processors: 8 × Intel® Core™ i5-8250U CPU @ 1.60GHz
Memory: 7.7 GiB of RAM

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- In the attached video, two out of three times the incorrect context menu is
opened.
- While trying to reproduce the issue, the plasmashell crashed, seemingly right
after drag-n-drop attempt. However, I couldn't reproduce the crash after that.
- Dran-n-drop for files works 100% of the time.

SUMMARY

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Upgrade packages in `sudo aptitude` after 2020-09-08
2. Reboot
3. Try starting plasmashell from a tty

OBSERVED RESULT
- Plasma doesn't start after step 2.
- Undefined symbol from libQT5Quick.so error in tty

EXPECTED RESULT
- Plasma boots normally

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
libqt5quick5 (version 5.14.2-0xneon+20.04+focal+build8) and 12 other packages
are reported by aptitude as upgradeable, but trying to upgrade them leads to
broken dependencies. Solutions suggested by aptitude include removing
neon-desktop package, unfortunately.

I have to type this from links in a tty, so getting additional info about KDE
version is a bit hard.

[systemsettings] [Bug 422068] New: Some "Activity switching" shortcuts don't work

2020-05-25 Thread Andrei Rybak
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=422068

Bug ID: 422068
Summary: Some "Activity switching" shortcuts don't work
   Product: systemsettings
   Version: 5.18.4
  Platform: Kubuntu Packages
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: kcm_keys
  Assignee: k...@michael-jansen.biz
  Reporter: rybak@gmail.com
CC: plasma-b...@kde.org
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
I've upgraded from 5.16 to 5.18 recently, and shortcut Meta for Kickoff did not
work from the get go. I've been struggling to make Meta work for Kickoff (the
whole Alt+F1 workaround thing) after upgrading from 5.16 to 5.18. Now Meta for
Kickoff works. But shortcuts Meta+[number] and Meta+[letter] stopped working.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Open "System Settings > Workspace > Shortcuts > Global Shortcuts > Other
   Shortcuts > Activity switching"
2. Make sure "Activate Task Manager entry" one through ten have shortcuts
   Meta+1 through Meta+0 respectively.
3. Make sure shortcut "Activities..." is set to Meta+Q (also tried Meta+A and
   Meta+Shift+A)
4. Press shortcuts from steps 2 and 3 right there in the "System Settings"
   dialog window.
5. Change "Activate Task Manager entry" to something without Meta key, like
   Ctrl+Shift+2

OBSERVED RESULT
- In Step 4 digits and letters are typed in the "Search..." field of the System
Settings dialog in the top left.
- In Step 5 nothing happened.

Please note, that the settings dialog understood and recorded the shortcuts
while focus was in the button "Input..." perfectly fine.

EXPECTED RESULT
Action corresponding to the shortcuts are launched.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: Kubuntu 20.04
KDE Plasma Version: 5.18.4
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.68.0
Qt Version: 5.12.8
Kernel Version: 5.3.0-51-generic
OS Type: 64-bit
Processors: 8 × Intel® Core™ i5-8250U CPU @ 1.60GHz
Memory: 7.7 GiB of RAM

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- Following Meta shortcuts work:
  - Meta+L to lock the session
  - Meta+F7 to toggle touchpad
  - Meta+D to show desktop
  - Meta+. for Emoji selector
  - Meta+E for Dolphin
- Shortcuts for "Walking through activities", which is also in the "Activity
  switching" group works.
- I probably did mess something up while trying to get Kickoff shortcut
working.
I just don't remember what I did exactly. I'll be happy to provide any
  configuration file.
- I've also tried setting the shortcuts in "Global Alternate" column, which
  also did not work.

Second demonstration of panel double take.

I found steps to reproduce, which work 100% of the time in my setup.

1. Vertical panel on the left.
2. The cursor should be moved over the empty space on the "Icons-only Task
Manager" panel, under the icons of open applications (if any).
3. The cursor should be moved to the leftmost pixel of the screen.

I have also noticed, that the mouse cursor _moves on its own_ one pixel to the
right, when the panel is reveal the second time.

Demonstration of panel double take.

SUMMARY
Hidden panel does a double take when revealed by moving the mouse cursor to the
edge of the screen.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Move mouse to the edge of the screen, where the panel is located.
2. Wait for panel to reveal itself.
3. Observe the panel.

OBSERVED RESULT
Panel moves twice.

EXPECTED RESULT
Panel moves once.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
It appears, that the behavior depends on the absence of getting focus on an
element of the reveal button (compare different attempts to reproduce in the
video).

SUMMARY
Default shortcuts for switching between "Task Manager Entries" (applications),
which is meta+ by default, has stopped working.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
0. Open ten different applications.
1. Press Meta+1
2. Press Meta+2
3. Press Meta+3
4. Press Meta+4
5. Press Meta+5

9. Press Meta+9
10. Press Meta+0

OBSERVED RESULT
None of the ten shortcuts work.

EXPECTED RESULT
All ten shortcuts work.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The weirdest results are when shortcuts are pressed when focus is inside the
application Konsole:

  $ s1s2s3s4s5s6s7s8s9s0

This output is interspersed with bash autocompletion for some hostnames, which
I don't understand.

The issue went away after reboot. I suspect, that the root cause was from one
of the restarts of plasma & kwin that I did. That is, calling one of:

  kwin --replace &
  kquitapp5 plasmashell && kstart5 plasmashell

can sometimes break the shortcuts.

An possibly important point: all the other shortcuts with Meta key (including
the infamous Meta key without anything else) continued working during that
period of breakage.

SUMMARY
Setting "Applications to be excluded from sessions" should have a tooltip on
its text field explaining the format for the text field.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Navigate to "System Settings > Startup and Shutdown > Desktop Session"
2. Hover mouse over the text field under label "Applications to be excluded
from sessions" in the section "On Login"

OBSERVED RESULT
No tooltip.

EXPECTED RESULT
A tooltip, which explains what kind of format is supposed to be used in the
text field for this setting.

Processors: 8 × Intel® Core™ i5-8250U CPU @ 1.60GHz
Memory: 7.7 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: Mesa Intel® UHD Graphics 620

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The help page, available from the Help button has the following:

Finally, you can enter a colon (:) or comma (,) separated list of
applications that should be excluded from sessions, and therefore
will not be started when restoring a session. For example
   xterm:konsole or xterm,konsole.

However, it doesn't explain what exactly to type to include an application in
the list. Is it the window title? The name of the application in the Kickoff
menu? Is it the name of the binary? If the user isn't savvy enough to guess
what's needed from the example, then the user unfortunately has no way of
knowing what exactly has to be typed in the text field. Please don't hesitate
to include _more_ information in the tooltip.

@Nate, both the pinned task manager icon and a _differently created_ desktop
icon work. By "differently created" I mean created via "Right click in
Application Launcher > + Add to Desktop".

I didn't realize that the contents of .desktop file would matter that much.
However, it apparently matters for this use case. The bug as described above
only reproduces with a .desktop file I've created myself in a text editor. The
whole contents of the file are:

#!/usr/bin/env xdg-open
[Desktop Entry]
Exec=/snap/bin/chromium
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Icon=/snap/chromium/current/chromium.png

It is a bare minimum of what's needed for an otherwise working .desktop icon.
The icon created via Application Launcher is actually a symlink to
/var/lib/snapd/desktop/applications/chromium_chromium.desktop, which has 296
lines. I'm trying to figure out which of these are needed for the icon to
behave differently on drag-n-drop of URLs (drag-n-drop of files works fine with
the bare minimum .desktop file).

In case it matters, the crash that I've tried to report was from KWin.

[drkonqi] [Bug 442613] New: DrKonqi can't install debug symbols for libQt5Core.so.5 and libQt5XcbQpa.so.5

2021-09-17 Thread Andrei Rybak
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=442613

Bug ID: 442613
Summary: DrKonqi can't install debug symbols for
libQt5Core.so.5 and libQt5XcbQpa.so.5
   Product: drkonqi
   Version: 5.22.4
  Platform: Neon Packages
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
  Severity: normal
  Priority: NOR
 Component: general
  Assignee: plasma-b...@kde.org
  Reporter: rybak@gmail.com
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
When I've tried to report a crash, DrKonqi asked to install debug symbols.
Unfortunately, it failed to install debug symbols for two libraries, namely
libQt5Core.so.5 and libQt5XcbQpa.so.5.

PREREQUISITE
Debug symbols are not installed.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Get a crash.
2. Open "The KDE Crash Handler" from the popup notification (I don't remember
the wording on the button).
3. On the tab "Developer Information", observe message "The generated crash
information is not useful"
4. Click "Install Debug Symbols"
5. In "Debug Symbols Installer", click "Install all"
6. Wait until installation finishes.

OBSERVED RESULT
DrKonqi did not install debug symbols for libQt5Core.so.5 and libQt5XcbQpa.so.5

EXPECTED RESULT
DrKonqi installed debug symbols for all listed libraries.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: KDE neon 5.22
KDE Plasma Version: 5.22.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.85.0
Qt Version: 5.15.3
Kernel Version: 5.11.0-34-generic (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: X11
Processors: 8 × Intel® Core™ i5-8250U CPU @ 1.60GHz
Memory: 7.7 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: Mesa Intel® UHD Graphics 620

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
I could not select "5.22.5" in the "Version" field, so selected 5.22.4, which
is the closest.

I mean "screenshots", in plural, here. There are four screenshots with
different windows and tabs open.

The root cause of this bug could be in "kdeplasma-addons/Picture of the Day"
However, even if "Picture of the Day" is broken, I feel that button "Change
Wallpaper..." in System Settings shouldn't break because an underlying addon is
broken.

I have managed to find a BAD workaround:

  1. Backup files '~/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc' and
'~/.config/kscreenlockerrc (1)'.
  2. Delete the originals of these files.
  3. Restart plasmashell via "killall plasmashell; kstart5 plasmashell"
  4. Open "System Settings"
  5. Click "Change Wallpaper..." and it works.

But this is obviously suboptimal -- I lost all my Plasma settings in the
process. I could not figure out which parts of the file
'plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc' are responsible for this. Partial
removal of lines with "wallpaper" and "potd" in them doesn't help.

Found a much better workaround. There is another way of getting to the
wallpaper settings, which isn't broken:

  1. Right click on the desktop
  2. Click on "Configure Desktop and Wallpaper..."
