Re: KR> Great Plains-Revmaster-O-200

2018-09-07 Thread Rob Schmitt via KRnet
Chris,

Just to give you some of my experience so far with my Revmaster VW;

I was able to successfully pick up a used Revmaster for my airplane for
about $2000. Per Revmaster it was on a Quickie in the 1980s but they could
not tell me how many hours it had on it. I spent about $1000 getting it
ready to fly. The main cost was getting the Bendix Dual Magneto overhauled
for $1000. I'm sure that is why I got the engine for only $2000.

I have 800 hours on it now and have probably spent another $2,500 on it
during those 800 hours. I replaced the Cylinder heads (replaced with Great
Plains heads) at 400 hours for about $1000, had to replace the case due to a
crack for $1000 (Revmaster case), and had the Magneto serviced and installed
a new wiring harness (500 hour IRAN) for $500.

Reliability has been good. None of the repairs I've done were because the
engine failed.

Thanks,

Rob Schmitt

I'm not planning to spend $8k - $9k, I'm looking into it to determine what
it will cost me. I suspect an O-200 might be too heavy for my V-Witt.

Re: KR> Great Plains

2018-09-06 Thread Mike T via KRnet
What I bought is a stock engine with, I believe, everything stock inside
and what the seller called a "German .010 .010 crank I was going to
use to rebuild
the engine" along with it. (Plus other new parts, some from GPASC). The new
crank came in a heavy plastic bag with no evidence of its origin, so I
can't confirm what the seller said about it, but the things he said about
the other stuff in the package turned out to be true, so this may be also
(and there may be clues to determine what crank it is, for all I know).

Concerning the 1835 size, I've never wanted anything bigger than that, and
it will be fast enough for me. The air-cooled VW is an engine designed in
the '30s to have maybe 30 hp, and the more powerful you make it the more
things start to break. That's partly the reason the Force One hub came
into being, because the larger engines were breaking crankshafts. So I
figured by NOT building a large engine and still using a Force One, I'd
have reliability to spare in the crank, which is a place where it's nice to
have it.

And I always wanted to build the engine myself. (And in fact I restricted
myself to planes powered by VW engines when I was looking for something to
build). I've had experience with VWs, rebuilding a bug engine in the '70s
on a car I had then. More recently, I pulled and rebuilt the head of my
2000 Golf GTI after breaking a timing belt, which led to the replacement of
12 of its 20 valves. I figured doing that myself would be good practice
doing a long, complicated project and also building an aero-VW engine (and
believe me, the head of a dual-overhead-camshaft five-valves-per-cylinder
turbocharged Golf has more parts than a Type 1 engine and is far more
complicated).

So the idea of buying an engine built by some company that boasts of all
kinds of modifications it made to the VW design is not only uninteresting
to me but positively repellent. There's no way I would ever consider it,
though I might want to use some parts such as the improved Revmaster heads
if the heads on this engine have any problems.

Finally, I'd be interested in buying a stock Type 1 head that's cracked,
worn out or otherwise a junker. I want to mill the head for two plugs per
cylinder myself, and I'd like a junk head to practice on.

I had 620 Loctite on it, which is pretty good stuff. The primary
mechanism for the torque transfer between crank and hub isn't the bolt,
(and certainly not the keyway), it's the taper joint between the crank
nose and hub (and the clamping force provided by the bolt). The two
didn't match precisely, otherwise it would have taken a press to get
them apart (and I've done that several times too). I used coarse and
then finer lapping compound for probably two hours to lap the two
together for a tighter fit before reassembling again. Yep, I had to
tear the whole engine down to mate them properly

And to follow up on that last sentence, the crank you got with your
project may be suspect, especially if it's a cheap cast crank, or a
reground stocker. If you've ever seen a 4340 Scat crank (which is the
basis for the GPASC, and maybe the Revmaster), the fillet radii are
very nice, as is the workmanship. VWs broke a lot of cranks in the
early days, and the Revmaster (who was probably first to do it) and
GPASC hubs, paired with very robust cranks, pretty much put an end to
it. I'm sure you know all of thisjust mentioning it for any of the
newbies on the list. The Corvair folks have now learned the very same
lesson, and 4340 cranks and a front bearing solution have now pretty
much ended broken cranks on Corvairs as well.

Revmaster makes a similar hub, and I assume would also bore a stock
crankcase to accept it. I like the Revmaster hub better anyway, as it
uses a larger diameter retaining bolt and left hand threads to retain
their hub to the crank. Having had mine unscrew itself on first startup
of the engine, this matters. And yes, it was properly torqued, but
apparently still not well mated to the taper. So the crank needs to be
drilled and tapped as well. Revmaster's crank is likely something other
than stock front journal length and diameter, as is the GPASC, so you
probably need a new crank as well. I'm not very familiar with the
Revmaster setup, as I've never had one apart, but I am familiar with the
Force One Hub setup. I'm sure if you'll call GPASC, they'll fix you up
with the same treatment for the Force One if that's what you want to do,
but I'd agree that their future may be iffy at this point. Either way,
I think you'll need a new crank, so you might as well go all the way and
make it a stroker and go 2180cc while you're at it. Or just bolt on the
"stock crank" hub, and live with 1835cc. If you are using a stock
crank, make dang sure it hasn't been reground with sharp fillet radii.

Marty sold GPASC to two A&Ps in Wichita, because he was buried with
orders and he and his wife were constantly behind the curve trying to
keep up. I called the A&Ps and asked about an exhaust system, and they
said they didn't keep any around, but had the weld fixtures and could
make me one in 4-6 weeks. That's when I whipped one up myself, although
it did take a solid week of spare time welding (at my rate) to finish
it. Engine mounts are made to order also, as I recall. Even though
the website remained the same (with different phone numbers and
addresses), there was probably enough confusion from customers, delays
in setting up new fabricators, and "behind the curve" on the GPASC side
to impact sales.

I was offered the company by Steve before Marty, and I passed. I
already have a decent job, which I'm hoping to retire from soon. Last
thing I need is to be buried in the VW engine worldsomething I
barely believe in anyway.

a few things from them about two weeks ago ( online ) with no response. Tried
calling them to order but no response. Email with no response. Voice mail says
“Don’t leave message, call when open”. No luck on all accounts. What gives?
