[lace] Colour run

2011-12-29 Thread Jean Nathan
I've noticed on a particular TV quiz show that the producers obviously don't
like the ladies to show too much leg or any cleavage whatsoever, and I
suspect the wardrobe department has a stock of black leggings to wear with
short dresses and both black and white lace-edged rectangles of fabric to
use as modesty panels on their idea of a low neckline. I can't imagine that
there are that number of women wearing either/both of these in the general
population. I know that the contestants have to take three outfits that they
think they could wear and the wardrobe department decides which. If none is
considered suitable, the wardrobe department provides them with clothes for
the show.

The modesty panels must just be pinned inside the garments, which have a
variety of neck shapes. What's visible varies from just a lace edging at the
very bottom of a V, to quite a large area of plain fabric edge with lace
filling a wide neckline half way up to the shoulders. So Beth's suggestion
of a folded large lace-edged hankie which can be unpinned for laundering
would seem to be ideal. Or you could make a piece of wide lace edging about
12 inches long if you wanted it to be all lace.

[lace] Fwd: Modisty panel

It the lace panel is tacked on 'behind' the opening, the lace can be a
rectangle that's a tad wider and longer than the opening. The extra on the
edges just lies behind the garment edges. It makes it look like you have a
lacy chemise under the top. The commercial modesty panels follow this idea so
they can show behind any garment with a low opening. I think it would be much
easier to make a rectangle than try to fit a shaped opening.

Now some proper lace content. I have another new top, not yet worn, grey
with pattern and a few sequins over the top and the neck line is a tad low on
me, so a modisty panel would definately be useful. Having never yet made
anything that actually had to fit clothing yet I have no idea where to start.
Maybe a paper pattern shape drawn with some seam allowed extra?

I would also like to send to all my Arachnean friends an Estonian greeting.
Here you are wished an Happy end to the Old Year before 31st December

Thank you for being such a friendly connection to the outside world.

Our Christmas weekend was very quiet with our youngest son away from home.
He'd decided that he'd like to go to Slovakia with a few friends.

Just before Christmas I visited a local yarn shop bought a book that I
had seen mentioned by one

of my favourite bloggers when she had written about it last year:
http://brittarnhildshouseinthewoods.typepad.com/brittarnhilds_house_in_th/2010/12/december-3rd-busy-needles.html

I was surprised to see 2 pages with lace - a tatted cross on page 103
a photo of some ornaments decorated with bobbin lace (from an Anna
magazine I'm sure) on page 128.

For those that like to knit these balls are fairly quick to make.

I like this one too Jean. I have a couple I have made plus one commercial

I have been looking at the new fashions, some gorgious, some very pretty and
others not so good. I might have to hunt down some clothing I have had
hiding in my wardrobe for a while. I might just manage to be a little bit
fashionable for a change, grin

Thank you Darlene, that thought has been rattling around my head also for a
couple of days. I have what might be a suitable top already, so I will try
it on underneath it to see if it all sits ok, the new grey one is a snug fit
around the top, so I dont want wrinkles in the camisole underneath. I am
considering doing one of these anyway so it will work with other tops (lots
of them seem to be lower than my really confortable sit. I dont have the
ample curves to give it the full glory.

As I read the replies to this question a thought popped into my head. Why
not purchase a fine knit camisole and add a band of lace across the top.
Naturally, you could alter the neckline to work with the lace you have
done. I think it would sit best with the top in question and could be
used with other garments as well.

I use a dark blue matt sticky backed plastic because most of my work done
using fine thread and in white, which gives a good contrast and not so hard
on the eyes. You can also buy the sticky backed plastic in paler, more
neutral colours.

[lace] Needlelace question

2011-12-29 Thread Janice Blair
Hi Jill,
I was taught to use a piece of fabric folded into quarters (finish the edges to
avoid rough edges). The pattern is traced onto a piece of soft plastic which I
buy in the upholstery department at JoAnn Fabrics in the US, using a permanent
marker. You have to remember to reverse the pattern if you want the design to
look the same as the original. The plastic is then basted down to the fabric.
The pattern done on plastic can be used a number of times. The plastic I use
is thin enough to be pliable, but thick enough that the needle does not
penetrate it when doing the filling stitches. It is thin enough for the
cordonet to be stitched down through the fabric though. Don't know the mil
thickness.

I have only used wire around the edges of a piece to provide stability if it is
to make something like a brooch. Let us know how you go on if you try it.

Hi Everybody:

Lenka Suchanek has been doing small needle lace pendants in wire for the past
year or two, though I don't think they're on her website. The wire does need to
be very flexible - she uses fine silver wire that she says works very well. She
combines the wire with stone beads and some other silver findings for
jewelry-making.

Hi, Jill,

Welcome to the Very addictive world of Needlelace!!! I use sticky-back
plastic over my paper pattern, which is tacked onto 4 layers of
calico(Muslin to USA!)

When I can, I use the thicker matt finish blue 'contact', but as it is
expensive I often just use a blue-ish green contact, as it is easy on the
eyes! If doing coloured lace I use clear contact over white paper, but for
white work I use a colour for contrast.

Do you know of the Needlelace Talk site, where there is lots of help for
