Re: [LegacyUG] Check/Repair problem

2023-09-05 Thread Gene Wheeler
Thanks to all for your feedback!! It helped me to visualize what the
problem really was, and how to deal with it. I found that when entering the
memorial ID's for these two people, husband and wife, I had somehow dropped
the last number in each of their FAG memorial ID's when copying them to
LFT. That left them with identical ID's. I think it's really cool that
Check/Repair found the problem!

Cheers!

[LegacyUG] Check/Repair problem

2023-09-04 Thread Gene Wheeler
After running Check/Repair, I got the following message:

*"Duplicate Find a Grave IDs have been found. Please review the duplicate
Find a Grave ID's below to fix them in your
file.==
RIN=23361, Find A Grave ID = 2279477 RIN=23365, Find A Grave ID = 2279477"*

I can't figure out how to deal with this. I checked the two individuals
with those RIN's and confirmed that they both use FAG as sources. However,
I don't know what to look for or what to "fix". Does anyone have ideas on
this? Thanks!

Re: [LegacyUG] Importing a .paf file into a new LFT file

Cathy and Brian,

Thanks for your thoughts on this issue! There are no import screens
unfortunately. As Brian suggests, I'll just have to bite the bullet and get
to work. Fortunately, there are only about 270 individuals in the PAF files!

I really appreciate your prompt responses!

[LegacyUG] Importing a .paf file into a new LFT file

2022-09-25 Thread Gene Wheeler
Is anyone familiar with importing an old .paf file into a new Legacy file?

I know it can be done directly from *.paf into Legacy, but I am
experiencing a problem that needs to be fixed. It has to do with importing
census events. During the import, census events are created as such;
however the census data itself is placed in the General Notes, rather than
within the census event. Thus, when creating a descendant report, the
information is not presented as it should be.

There are simply too many of these to try to cut 'n paste or drag 'n drop.
I would hope there is some way in the import setup to make sure the data is
placed within the census event.

Thanks for any suggestions!

[LegacyUG] Viewer for Legacy Family Tree

should be constructed? Is there a better name for it?

[LegacyUG] Merging a gedcom to my master file

2020-12-24 Thread Gene Wheeler
I understand there are two ways to merge a gedcom to my master files: one
by merging the gedcom file directly into the master file; the other is to
use the gedcom to create a new LFT file, then merge that database into the
master file. That latter seems a lot more complicated.

My question is, which is the easiest and best way to do this to assure no
problems. The gedcom is not all that big, perhaps 620 individuals. The
master file has 7500 individuals.

The gedcom was originally created when I decided to delete a
collateral line from my master file, but I wanted to save the info just in
case. Well, here I am wanting to re-add that line to my master file.
However, I have upgraded to v.9 since then.

It seems on the surface that the gedcom should be pretty clean and that I
ought to be safe importing/merging it back into my master file. Anyone have
any thoughts on this? Your advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

[LegacyUG] Tracking bloodlines

2020-12-23 Thread Gene Wheeler
I have an unusual situation occurring in my ancestry, once in 18th century
Prussia, and once in 18th century Moravia. Please let me explain:

The house of our Bergschneider ancestors in Scharmede, Prussia was referred
to as both the "Bergschneider Farm" and the "Ottensmeier Farm". Which
family first owned it is not yet proven. However, according to research
done by a Bergschneider cousin in 2010 in Scharmede, in early times,
following marriage, it was common for the groom to acquire the bride's
surname if they made their home in the farm of the bride's family. This is
just what Joducus Hermannus Ottensmeier did when he married Marie Elisabeth
Bergschneider in 1758 when Maria was barely 15 years old.

Maria must have died soon after marriage, as they did not have children,
and by early 1763, Joducus had remarried to Mary Elisabeth Jostmeier. In
1764, Mary gave birth to their first son, Johann Bernhard "Bergschneider".
Thereafter, the male descendants of Joducus and Mary bore the surname
"Bergschneider", when in fact they were of Ottensmeier and Jostmeier blood,
not Bergschneider! They only have the Bergschneider name, not the
Bergschneider blood!

It also means that we have many ancestors in Scharmede, as there are today
many Ottensmeier families there!

How on earth do I track the Bergschneider bloodline back to its origins in
Legacy Family Tree? I have the same situation with Moravian ancestors as
well!

Interesting problem. I can't believe I'm the only one to encounter this,
and hope that someone in this user group has some ideas as to how to handle
this. I'd like to create an ancestor report, an ahnentafel report, and a
pedigree report for these families! Thanks for any suggestions! And I think
I should also track the very earliest Bergschneider line going back from
Maria!

If so, how is it done? I need a list of all such books so I can better add
all the source detail I possibly can, including a link to an online

[LegacyUG] Fwd: Legacy - Web Pages

Gary,

Another approach, that I and many other Legacy users have taken, is to
create a website using The Next Generation of Genealogy Site Building
 and periodically uploading our gedcoms
and media files from Legacy to “publish” our family trees. It has worked
very well for me for many years.

I'm thinking of putting my research on to a web site. As I understand it,
this can be done in LEGACY.

I have some questions though...

1) is just the basic information for individuals put on the site

2) are any notes for individuals put on the site

3) is anything in the media gallery (photos, documents etc) for individuals
attached put on the site

4) how 'hard' is it to create a site

5) how does the 'world' know you have a site

6) can the site be controlled as to who can view it

Does anyone have a site they've created with LEGACY that I could look at to
see what one looks like?

[LegacyUG] Those aggravating messages...

2018-10-15 Thread Gene Wheeler
If you're using Gmail, look for the "Search mail" link at the top of the
page. Click the drop down at the far right of the link. That's where you
can create a filter. Enter whatever terms you want to filter on (I placed "
a6862...@opayq.com" in the "From" box) then hit the "create filter" link,
and that worked for me. Now those aggravating messages go directly to TRASH.

I created my filter last evening, and I had three of those messages in my
Trash this morning and NONE in my inbox. It works!

Using Legacy 9, and I have found a very detailed Record of Funeral. How can
I enter this into Legacy 9? It's an event-related record; however, there is
no existing record type for this. I could create a new record type, but
then how can this be included in a gedcom file for use with my TNG website?

Thanks for any suggestions/solutions!

[LegacyUG] Fwd: Wrong relationship

P.S. I have also reset the relationships and the relationship calculator
shows the correct relationship, but it still shows wrong on the family view.

Subject: Wrong relationship
To: Legacy Users Group <LegacyUserGroup@legacyusers.com>

I have a 6th great grandfather who married twice. His first wife was my 6th
great grandmother; however, her relationship says "wife of 6th great
grandfather" rather than 6th great grandmother.

I have tried the file maintenance routines, closed down Legacy v.8, but
this error still shows. Is there some way to fix this? Thanks!

I have a lot of Czech names and places that use special characters that
are not available in Legacy v.8 choices for special characters. I can find
them in the Windows 7 Character Map, but when I copy and paste them into a
name or location field in v.8, a question mark appears, not the special
character. Is there a way I can work around this? Thanks!

Re: [LegacyUG] MyHeritage - not free

2018-02-16 Thread Gene Wheeler
IMHO, I think many people, including me, are more than a bit concerned
about Legacy Family Tree (Millennia) hooking up with an organization that
functions the way MH does with their customer base. They certainly do NOT
measure up to Legacy in that regard. I'm worried that Legacy may eventually
be forced to operate the way that MH, Ancestry, and others do and lose one
of their current competitive advantages.

[LegacyUG] Reports/Publishing Center

2017-08-20 Thread Gene Wheeler
In using the Publishing Center, I am trying to create a report that
contains three chapters in the following order: Origins Report, Pedigree
Chart, and Ancestor Book Report.

When doing so, it appears there is no way to prevent printing sources in
the Pedigree Chart chapter. The full list of sources is already presented
in the Ancestor Book Report, and many of the same ones are also printed in
the Pedigree Chart. This seems redundant, and wastes space and paper. Is
there not a way to prevent sources from being included in the Pedigree
Report chapter?

Thanks,

Re: [LegacyUG] Web page creation

Joanne and Ian,

That's what TNG is all about! Basically, you simply upload your gedcom and
you're in business. Yes, you need to make a couple decisions then, but TNG
has some great tutorials that will take you through it. And you can choose
from about 15 templates to get the look you want. Should you ever wish to
customize the template, there are many ways to do so, or you can easily
find someone on the TNG Users group or TNG Forum who will do it for you for
a modest cost.

Re: [LegacyUG] Problem with V8.0.0.602 and V8.0.0.604

2017-07-10 Thread Gene Wheeler
That just seems to introduce another set of issues! I've purchased v.9, but
am holding off using it until the problems all get cleared up. I think LFT
is maybe getting too complicated to design and use all the new features.
IMHO, they should continue to support v.8 for those of us who would rather
have a solid, reliable tool and still offer v.9 to those who have more
patience to deal with it's issues and can't wait to use the new features.

Can 8 and 9 run side-by-side on the same machine? If so, one could use v.8
as the preferred version, and still run v.9 to learn its intricacies before
adopting it to replace v.8.

Yes, Denise. I'm using the basic source tool. What FamilySearch does is
exactly what I would like to see the other database services and sources of
information use. Maybe some of them will someday?

Thanks for your comments, though!

Re: [LegacyUG] Formatting issue in Source Detail

2016-11-26 Thread Gene Wheeler
Jenny,

Thanks for your reply! I copy and paste, then delete extraneous spaces. If
the original text is "linear"; i.e. not in a column, I will place Returns
where appropriate to make it columnar. If the original is already columnar,
I copy and paste, then delete the extraneous spaces. However, in the latter
case, I have NOT been adding any Returns. Perhaps that's what I should do.
For instance, the text found in Findagrave for birth, death, burial info is
already columnar. This is primarily where I notice the "run together" that
I have experienced. I will experiment with adding Returns and see if that
fixes my problem.

Will let you know the results. Thanks!

[LegacyUG] Formatting issue in Source Detail

2016-11-25 Thread Gene Wheeler
When I enter info into the Source Detail, I enter it such as:

Name: Elizabeth Cate
Birth Date: 6 Apr 1765
Birth Place: Barrington, Strafford, New Hampshire, United States
Father's name: John Cate
FHL Film Number: 1000492

Then I save it.

When I come back later to view it, the info has been reformatted to:

Name: Elizabeth Cate Birth Date: 6 Apr 1765 Birth Place: Barrington,
Strafford, New Hampshire, United States Father's name: John Cate FHL Film
Number: 1000492

The data has been run together, making it more difficult to read when
printed out.

If I then modify the entry by placing an ENTER in the appropriate places to
recover the desired format, thereafter it seems to stay formatted as
desired.

How can I overcome this so I don't have to deal with it twice? Thanks!

Re: [LegacyUG] Identification of "UnKnown" name

2016-09-12 Thread Gene Wheeler
The New England Historic Genealogical Society, in a book entitled "Guide To
Genealogical Writing", says to use exactly five (5) underscores for an
unknown name. Thus, I recently did a mass change of the use of "Unknown" to
the five underscores in Legacy. For one thing, this makes the fact stand
out that the name is not known when scanning a list of names, or otherwise.

Re: [LegacyUG] LFT under Linux?

Thanks, Cliff! I was afraid that was the case. I'm about to dump Windows
7 as I don't want to be forced to use Win 8 or 10. I hope I don't have to
abandon LFT in the process.

Re: [LegacyUG] LFT under Linux?

2015-11-06 Thread Gene Wheeler
Jairmie,

Thanks for jumping in with your thoughts and experience with Win 10! I'm
glad to hear that LFT works well with Win 10. Thanks also for the offer of
assistance from LFT Support. That's a very important consideration. If I
stay with Windows, it will only be because of my strong commitment for LFT.
But I hate being "forced" by MS into doing it their way. I really like Win
7 (hate 8) and have no experience yet with 10, only what I read about from
other users.

Best regards,

Gene

You cannot please everyone. Users complained frequently when we used
never married so we changed it to a more general term relationship and
now others are complaining about that.

Please consider making the wording for no relationships and had no children

an option. *THAT* is possible to determine! No relationships is *NOT*!

Let's see, that means: no mistresses, no concubines, no extra-marital
affairs, no one night flings, etc.

But no relationships? Legacy needs to get out more.

It doesn't work on the Legacy FDB file directly but with a Gedcom. It does

Michelle,

This works perfectly if one can get rid of the redundant marriage info:
e.g. John Doe married Jane Roe; Jane Roe married John Doe.

How to do you prevent this from being included in the report?

in a suggestion to have it match what's in the book exactly. If so, when
you make the suggestion make sure that you mention that Michele in Tech

Find a copy of Guide to Genealogical Writing by Penelope Stratton and
Henry Hoff, published by NEHGS in 2014. On p 20 at the bottom of the page
you will see a perfect example of what a true ahnentafel report should look
like. The Ancestor Report in Legacy is just a reverse Descendant Report,
not a true ahnentafel which was the request of the person who started this
 thread.

My main PC is down so I can't include a sample with this email, but
somebody at Legacy should be able to find this book!

Neither of these reports are what I call a traditional ahnentafel
report. Are you familiar with what that is? It is linear, without
individual details except for DOB and place, and DOD and place; individual
couple separated by generation numbering. This report is far more
condensed than that two you mentioned. Individuals are numbered, and you
double that number to find the father's number, and add one to find the
mother.

Here are at least two differences between your example and Gene's idea

Gene mentions individual couples separated by generation numbers which

Gene does not mention including marriage information which you include

Re: [LegacyUG] Mass update surnames

2015-03-06 Thread Gene Wheeler
Mike,

What I mean is that, when I generate a surname list showing only the
surname UNKNOWN, there will be a long list of people in the surname list
that follow the following format:

UNKNOWN, John Thomas
UNKNOWN, Michael James
etc.
etc.

Then in addition to these persons with unknown surnames, there will be a
few people with KNOWN surnames and KNOWN given names, in alphabetical
order, some before the UNKNOWN surnames and some after the UNKNOWN
surnames. In my case, there are something like 354 people with surnames
listed as UNKNOWN, and three people listed before them alphabetically: e.g.:

BAKER, Susan A.
COMSTOCK, Mary Elizabeth
THOMAS, Edward
UNKNOWN, John Thomas
UNKNOWN, Michael James
etc.
etc.

Hope this explains what is happening.

I would suspect that as we read these messages, several of Millenia’s
support people are banging away at their keyboards trying to see if they
can recreate the issue. If they can’t recreate the issue, then they’re
probably trying to figure out what user errors would cause the problem.
When one support persons thinks they’ve got it figured out, they’ll
probably forward the resolution to another support person to confirm the
problem and proposed solution. So let’s give them some time and see what
 happens.

source every one (it is a family plot). I went to print a list so To make
sure I photographed all of them when I went, and it only gave me three
 people.

 O help. I don't think you're going mad.

I had this happen the other day but caught it straight away and wasn't
sure what I'd done. Just one location changed to a new location I'd just
entered. The new location was a birth location. The location that changed
was the death and burial location for that person and for everyone using
that death location. I know I made a mess of the new entry and edited it a
few times as I found out more about the location. I was also having some
computer problems and Legacy crashed a couple of times so I put it down to
 that.

I've now restored an earlier image of my computer and all seems well again.

No, no clean-up, no merging, nothing like that. In fact, I've been
working on a totally different Legacy file for the past month.

 I just
happened to notice that the location for the burial of both of
 my parents
was changed to the same incorrect cemetery. The correct
 cemetery has been
part of their records for years, and now, somehow, they BOTH got
 changed to
the same incorrect cemetery. Any idea what gives? It makes me
 wonder how
many other records got changed without my knowledge.

Been doing any spring cleaning of locations?
