20GB experience + a few questions
Date: Sat, 21 Oct 2000 21:59:05 +0200 From: "Alexandre Kaoukhov" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: 20GB experience + a few questions Hi, I finally purchased the new IBM 20GB drive from Weesco (thanks to David). There are quite a few options for nonUS residents. Actually, few companies ship and bill outside US. Those who accept ask you to pay through money order. It is not easy to send MO as subsequently if something go wrong you lose your money. Bob the owner of Weesco is a nice guy and has a good feedback in E-Bay. The prices are reasonable and shipping charges are $25.00. Finally he kindly noted "Replacement Hard Drive" on the top of the box and so far I have not received VAT customs form. I found only one company (do not actually remember the name) which ships overseas and accept credit cards but they were charging $85 for shipping. Note for French buyers: at least IBM France offers only 3 months warranty for parts (IMO Toshiba do the same) for this cutting edge technology! Thus, 3 years of US warranty well worth the hassle of buying in US. I am actually at my third drive replacement in two-year Libretto experience. Toshiba's 6GB died for the second time while I was waiting for 20GB. I will have to contact that f#@$ng Toshiba support again! Hope this helps future buyers. Now the questions. 1 Aware of potential hibernation zone problem I FDISKed first. Obviously in DOS I was limited to 8GB. I carefully noted the last sector which was Cyl 1016; Head 254; Sector 63. My partition plan was the following: 1st primary Win2K 3GB 2nd primary Win98 1,5GB 3st primary DOS 0,5 GB Extended 3GB 200MB for temporary Windows files, Internet cashe, Recent, Cookies 200MB pagefile 80MB beginning Cyl 1017 Head 1 sect 1 12GB CD images I remember that when I partitioned hibernation zone on 6GB drive whenever BIOS hibernation occurred partition table was erased and the hibernation zone appeared again as unallocated space. Thus this was my test. And it did not work! After BIOS hibernated my Libretto I was able to access all logical drives. How can I find where Libretto hibernates before I loose any data??? 2 Another weird problem happened to me which may explain my first problem. I was urged to get some data from a friend's desktop so I hibernated Win2k, pulled out the drive and connected through USB adapter. Though DNboy is supposed to be limited to 13GB drives I was able to access the whole drive and copy my files. I even tested if I was able to access those files on my drive. It was a bad surprise when I discovered my drive in Libretto just after it went from hibernation. The files were not there! Actually I suppose that Win2k keeps all filetables in memory and on some occasions may restore them to drive after standby/hibernation. Can anybody confirm this? 3 I am going to use System Commander to switch from Win2k to Win98. Are there any hidden problem to ghost in this particular case? 4 What is the better choice Ghost or Drive Image? I have one point for Drive Image: it can verify integrity of allocation tables of all drives before dumping partition. Did anyone managed to save partition directly to NTFS disk? DI docs say it is possible as long as DOS gives a letter to the disk. I tested with demo of NTFSDOS but failed. Computer is rebooted whenever I try to start DI/Ghost. When NTFSDOS is loaded with hymem.sys it says stack overflow. Systernals site says to ask technical assistance but it is limited to NTFSDOSPRO users. These are all my questions. Thank you for any help. If you remember my post about CD emulators - Win2k incompatibilities. I finally got solution it is Paragon CD emulator. Quick reminder: Virtual Drive - only one drive can be created; need to reboot Win2k when you plug PCMCIA CD-ROM VirtuoCD - no compression, the author seems to forget about his commitment to develop this software Virtual CD v3 - prevents standby/hibernation ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://libretto.basiclink.com/archive - Archives http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/portable/faq.html - FAQ ---UNSUBSCRIBE--- mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=cmd:unsubscribe UNSUBSCRIBE DIGEST-- Use above but add DIGEST to the subject line... **

RE: Win2k on Lib 110?
Date: Mon, 30 Oct 2000 21:24:54 +0100 From: "Alexandre Kaoukhov" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: Win2k on Lib 110? Hi! - Power management for Win2k installed. The Control Panel has now an extension (whrere processor speed and brightness of the display is adjustable) but changes on this panel make no effect, these parameters always remain on the defaults. You are probably running localised Win2k. No problems in native English version. Power extention also rely on ACPI toshiba value added logical device but as long as I remember but not sure in this case you will not see extention panel at all. So is there an need for a second "hibernation-partition" which is used for other operating-systems? And how can I remove this partition, if it is not needed? Control Panel- Administrative Tools- Computer Management- Disk Management. But I would warn you to do that. BIOS will force hibernation into that area if it runs out of battery while on stanby. Lib 100 does not hibernate on overheat it just shutdown. NTFS puts backup of boot sector to the last sector of partition. If original boot sector is damaged and backup overwritten you loose all your data. - I have not yet found the Win2k-utilities to make BIOS-adjustments. I verified Toshiba page with that utility is no longer there. I will post it later if no one can do this before. - What is the Toshiba mobile extensions software? no idea. - I have planned to install a IBM 20GB HD - will it work in Win2k (because the BIOS-limit is still 8GB!) the only problem is to localize hibernation zone. Hope this helps, Alexandre ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://libretto.basiclink.com/archive - Archives http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/portable/faq.html - FAQ ---UNSUBSCRIBE--- mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=cmd:unsubscribe UNSUBSCRIBE DIGEST-- Use above but add DIGEST to the subject line... **
RE: 20GB experience + a few questions
Date: Mon, 30 Oct 2000 21:24:57 +0100 From: "Alexandre Kaoukhov" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: 20GB experience + a few questions A HD sector editor would let you manually alter the master file directory, then let you chain files together sector by sector by hand. Since all directories pretty much are laid out like: Directory Listing for File0001 points to first HD sector #, with pointer to second sector, which points to second HD sector # and has a pointer to the their sector .it is merely a matter of locating the first sector of your ZIP (or any other file you want to recover), locating the second sector, and so forth, then making sure the directory is properly updated with this information. Yes, you can spend days working on this recovering multi-MB files by hand, but it works fine. The solution was much simpler than that. Win2k has an utility called diskprobe. It allows you directly manipulate sectors. In fact in my case information in first EBR about the next extended partition was overwritten. It was matter of minutes to calculate the right data, write it and all the chain of extended partitions was recovered. However I spent the whole week-end learning about partitions in order to do this. BTW recover boot sector in NTFS is even easier. Actually I made floppy backup of all partitions tables as well as boot sectors. Now I am looking for two DOS utilities from NT4 resource kit: disksave and diskprobe. As for a program that writes 1's to disk, I wouldn't know. I'd just write a program myself. I am doctor not programmer! Maybe www.softseek.com or www.deja.com/usenet has some clues. No 1 From time to time I hear a rather loud click inside and Windeows freezes in that moment. This problem was present from the first time I installed the drive. What that could be? Does Windows crash or do anything bad? No it just freezes for a fraction of second. It's either the HD head moving about, or HD failure. Both IBM and Toshiba have low-level diagnostics programs you can run on the HD to make sure nothing bad is happening, just in case. This is certainly HD head hitting something. But I have never heard that kind of sound on other HD IBM or not. 2 Some time ago I read from your page about SIIG PCMCIA fan. Have you seen Win2k drivers for it? No idea. But one person who did try it recommended against it. It is such a tight fit that it damaged the MB/circuitry around the area and caused problems for that one person. however, that was merely an example of stupidity. If the card, if out of spec sizewise, was too hard to squeeze in, then why did that person proceed? I'm sure another PCMCIA fan card, if the proper size, would fit just fine and not cause problems. The name of "one person" is Nicolas Rubinstein. As I remember he is no longer on the list. He is otherwise smart guy and gave us many useful tips about Win2k and overclocking. By the way I remind you that he fixed his motherboard with a drop of glue. Remember, for all electronic equipment, it shouldn't need much force to put together. If it does, something is most likely wrong and you shouldn't force it in -- or else you'll risk damage. I must admit that card in question fits rather tight and if your motherboard is weak it can be damaged. But in my opinion his and mine problem is that we tend to forget that most so called IT professionals are just incompetent when are not trying to cheat you. It just hard to imagine that you paid $$ for a potentially dangerous misconceived card. Finally, David about previous suggestion about FAT. From all that I had to read about FAT/NTFS comparative stability I am happy to stay with NTFS. Most if not all recovery utilities just take the address from MFT of the first sector of file to recover and then recover the next sectors corresponding to file size. Thus, unless you defragmented partition minutes before failure your chances to recover are nil. Theese are just my 2c, Alexandre ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://libretto.basiclink.com/archive - Archives http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/portable/faq.html - FAQ ---UNSUBSCRIBE--- mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=cmd:unsubscribe UNSUBSCRIBE DIGEST-- Use above but add DIGEST to the subject line... **

I routinely use standby vice hibernation, and read with interest that the BIOS will do a direct write to disk if it orders a hibernation that will essentially trash my hard disk - unless I am exceptionally lucky. Is there a way to identify and partition that area without a reinstallation of W2K?? I followed the discussion of writing all ones and looking for the area... but I am uninterested in doing that - I'll just continue to operate like I am and take the chance. There is indirect way to proceed. Boot from DOS floppy. Then run any utility that reports HD geometry eg Caldera fdisk (comes with any Powerquest software) or PTS diskeditor (free). You will see that your disk upper limit is only Cyl 1016 Head 255 and Sector 64 which is different from usual 1024 cylinder limit. Now a bit of calculation: (1024-1016)*255*64*512/1024=65280KB Control Panel-System reports that I have 65136KB of RAM. This should fit between 1016 and 1024 cylinders. As Win98 hibernation question is not asked since long I can conclude that there are no "normal" users left on this list. More seriously you must use any partition utility that allows you manipulate cylenders. I think that most secure option would be to leave space from 1010 to 1028 cylinders unpartitioned. I mentioned this before that I will not proceed with disk editor until I get buckup everything. But if you wish you can use Norton DiskEditor to verify where BIOS hibernates effectively. From DOS this utility allows you access entire disk even without overlay software. You sould just calculate from cyl/head/sect to relative sectors then there is an option to "Fill" with any pattern. Leave Bios hibernate then boot from DOS. There is only one thing I still doubt in this approach : Windows always swaps some data in order to leave a few of RAM free. I guess what I am asking is where can I find the necessary DOS drivers for a "Standard IDE/ESDI hard Disk Controller". RE: External HDD / USB question
Date: Tue, 16 Jan 2001 20:41:24 +0100 From: "Alexandre Kaoukhov" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: External HDD / USB question Is anyone out there using an external HDD? I am With Win'98 and/or Win'2K? Win2k Hints / tips / recommendations much appreciated! About a year ago when I was on the market for such a solution I placed a web page http://pcmcia2ide.da.ru It is probably outdated now but there are still some hints. If I want to hook up said external drive to my L110, am I right to say that via a PC-card slot is the only sensible option? (I don't have the dock with USB). Parallel port version is also available. You can purchase CardBus either USB or Firewire and then hook 36pin IDE adapter *expensive*. Also, am I right to presume that as the L110 has CardBus, I have a choice between the PC-card being a dedicated external HDD card, or using a USB card? Moreover you have choice between Cardbus (faster) and 16bit (available in DOS). From Addonics and Skymaster respectively. Any disadvantage with the USB option? Actually two: slow and unavailable in DOS. I can see USB might be useful for other things in the future (actually I guess I'd buy a USB mouse at the same time and stop carrying the replicator everywhere). I would seek for Firewire solution - I also consider buying external 5.25'' case for combo Ricoh 9120A DVDCDRW. Will either or both (proprietry/USB) options power an external 2.5" x9.5mm without needing an external power supply? Most of them use PS/2 5volts but PCMCIA alimented also exist. I remember reading that someone on the list was using an external HDD but that the software was crap, so any recommendations for a good piece of kit would be very much appreciated - likewise which USB cards are to be preferred/avoided - TIA Do not know any except EZ-Drive proprietary soft will not work. I am quite happy with DN-Boy however it should be noted that their DOS driver only accepts partitions less than 2GB formatted FAT 16. That is enough for a ghost image. Hope this helps, Alexandre Kaoukhov ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://libretto.basiclink.com/archive - Archives http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/portable/faq.html - FAQ ---UNSUBSCRIBE--- mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=cmd:unsubscribe UNSUBSCRIBE DIGEST-- Use above but add DIGEST to the subject line... **
RE: External HDD / USB question
Date: Tue, 16 Jan 2001 20:49:51 +0100 From: "Alexandre Kaoukhov" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: RE: External HDD / USB question Parallel port HDs also work. I've got an external case from www.h45.com and dropped in a spare laptop HD. No problems at all, except that during transfers to the HD, the machine under Windows does become very, very sluggish as the CPU will be completely tied up working on the transfer. This won't happen under USB because only the p.port requires constant CPU administration during transfers. 16bit PCMCIA is also big CPU hog However, I chose p.port because I wanted DOS compatibility, something no USB HD can give you because there's no DOS USB support at all. This way, I can transfer files off a system in case of an emergency, or if I'm using Ghost to backup my system under DOS. As I mentioned before PCMCIA work in DOS As for PCMCIA HDs, you've got three choices. 1) SCSI PCMCIA adapter to external SCSI HD - fastest. (there's also firewire, but ignore this for today because drives are very expensive, and no drive yet exceeds the bandwidth of SCSI, which is far cheaper) CardBus Firewire($100)-Firewire to 36pin IDE ($89)-External case 2) IDE PCMCIA adapter to external IDE HD - slightly slower than SCSI, but far cheaper for the HDs. Bottleneck for both is 16bit - quite slow though ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://libretto.basiclink.com/archive - Archives http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/portable/faq.html - FAQ ---UNSUBSCRIBE--- mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=cmd:unsubscribe UNSUBSCRIBE DIGEST-- Use above but add DIGEST to the subject line... **

Where to buy 36pins 5.25 enclosure?
Date: Tue, 13 Mar 2001 14:29:06 +0100 From: "Alexandre Kaoukhov" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Where to buy 36pins 5.25" enclosure? I won Ibazar bid on Ricoh 9120 combo thus now I am desperately looking for the device mentioned in the subject. I know that they are still produced somewhere. Here in Paris I know only one shop (Surcouf) that sells them but only bundled with PCMCIA adapter for $100. I do not need a couple of another PCMCIA adapters. Addonics sells them only with CDRW inside and a couple of hours of search on the internet brought nothing else. Otherwise I could never understand the reasons driving the market. Any good device seem to be rapidly discontinued. As in the case of 36pin adapters. There are any kind of 36pin adapter : Parallel, PCMCIA, CardBus, USB and even Firewire. So user is always sure to choose the solution that suits his needs yet be able to share the data with his fellows. Personally I was glad using DNboy though PCMCIA and could almost always give it with its USB adapter. Thus I stick with 36pins. Now only Firewire enclosure provides reasonable bandwidth but I have not seen a single PC with 1394 port yet (outside of computer stores). In theory I should buy Firewire adapter $150 plus enclosure $70 plus cables $30. At the end after spending around $200 I will get a solution compatible virtually only with laptops. Sad story... In the meantime I spent the whole week end soldering 40pins desktop to 40pins laptop adapter. I decided to use my DNboy as adapter consequently I supposed that the only thing I need is to rewire connectors. I succeeded to connect the pins of an old hard drive to DNboy respectively leaving 41-44 pins untouched because drive was powered through desktop AC adaptor. At the end when I plug PCMCIA to Libretto HD seems to spin up and down, move its heads as if being recognized yet nothing is seen in device manager. Can anyone provide some help on this issue? Soldering appears to be correct as tested with lamp. Indeed it becomes jittery when there is sustained flow for a few seconds, ie music, sound of rain etc. I would like to hear other user's experience. Pres are you there? Indeed my idea is that the problem may come from 16bit PCMCIA to IDE adapter - I use external enclosure for Ricoh 9120 combo drive. Thus I would like to know if it would worth buying Cardbus type adapter or Firewire one. I have also USBtoIDE adapter and I will guive it a try as extended replicator port is next on my purchase list. I subscribed to the list hoping to get some help with my trouble... I've read some FAQs including Adorable libretto's page, but still not sure I have all the info to solve this problem myself... So I'm asking for help in the list. As it happens usually, my friend was playing with my 50ct and my dog was jumping around... next moment, an unpredictable move of the dog, and the computer (it was the time of booting windows...) dropped to the floor. :( As a result, 18 bad blocks, but after scandisk, Windows was booting normally and I thought that everything was OK. Some days later, I noticed that I can't access device manager by any way (from desktop or control panel...), and later, after my attempt to install an antivirus software, Windows stopped booting normally, just giving msgsrv32 caused the error... messages and freezing (safe mode also doesn't work). If I delete the registry files in command line mode, I can boot windows, but I can't install anything because it again brings up this msgsrv problem... think it's all because of these bad blocks. So I think it's time to replace the hard drive and install new OS or just re-install Windows. I don't have movey right now for new HDD... so I need to re-install Windows. Can you please help me with that, because I'm curious about this hibernation partition and bad blocks on the drive. I was running scandisk many times, but number of bad blocks doesn't grow (hopefully it wouldn't). I don't know if it would be enough to place Windows distributive files on hard drive and run setup from DOS mode. I don't have PCMCIA CD-ROM, but I think I can transfer files from desktop computer with LPT-LPT cable... So, I badly need help and advices from experts, what can I do in this situation and how do I re-install Windows on Libretto. Also, my libretto had russian Windows 98 on it, and I'd prefer to have Win95 OSR. Could it be better? Shouldn't I remove all Windows 98 files from the hard drive before re-installation? I don't have any settings I want to keep - but I'm afraid how newly installed Windows would recognize the libretto hardware (accupoint and other specific devices) and would it be able to use hibernation partition?... It did work but the problem is that Margi player somehow refused using hardware decompression while playing from HD. Thus, I just got about 5-10 fps - the same as PowerDVD. There should be some DVD emulators available. Do not know if this would allow to cheat Margi player. I will give it a try when I get some time. Another option is to convert DVD to VCD and then emulate VCD. Margi specs say that it plays VCDs. I have never tried DIVx but I wonder how it could be possible to play them even on overclocked Libretto. Even if it works, how about thermal shutdowns? Anyway, unless you download films from the net it should take more than overnight to convert DVD to DIVx. The same is true for VCDs. You may have to cycle through them on both sides to match to find the one that works (some PCs will work on Bi-Dir, but not on ECP or EPP for strange reasons). 5) Make sure File Sharing is on on both sides in Network Control Panel. 6) Create a folder on both sides and share them. Um. If you've tried DCC and that didn't work (did you use a 'laplink' type parallel cable? They swap certain pins over to make it work, a straight pin-pin cable doesn't work)...how about DCC with a serial cable - but it will be sloow. IIRC win95 should respond to DCC though you'll have to make the lib end the client - it's so many years since I tried this: There's a pretty good looking page at http://www.tecno.demon.co.uk/dcc/dcc.html which has some tips for getting things running - I think the easiest way is to run Interlnk on the lib and intersvr on the windows machine in dos mode - provided it can see the cdrom in dos mode, you should be able to copy it. I don't recall the original status - IIRC you have no network, no floppy, but you do have a cdrom...do you have a cdrom writer on your desktop machine? (I'm heading into unexplored territory here...)? I think the difference between a floppy boot and the default boot is in the original boot loader - if you start it from a hard disk it doesn't respond to 'text' as one of the boot options, maybe you could hack that? Alternatively, if you can source an adapter IDE-2.5 that will let you do the installation on the desktop machine. All the drivers will be wrong, so you'll have to let harddrake throw them all away after you load, and make sure you have the RPMs available on the same disk (I dual boot W95 and linux, with a copy of the installation disk on the windows partition so I can see it from linux), and you probably don't want to be running kde2, but fvwm is quick and reasonably useful... te that will unmount filesystems. using this will allow you to unload the driver and usually start it again. Let me know if you want it, and I'll email it to you... It's pretty crude, but it does the job. Thanks Alexandre, Steve J. Prochniak I replied: Dear Stephen, I am glad with your explications about issues in dynamic loading and unloading. I think that putting all this online would gratly promote your program. What about compresion I think I understand what do you mean. It seems to me that VirtuoCD compression is actually NTFS intrinsik compression. It is always "on" on my drive. That is why I thoght that there was something wrong with your program. In fact, the compressed size of file in question is about 200MB which is still way greater than 142MB of Virtual Drive. Can you confirm my impressions? Thank you, Alexandre From: Stephen J. Prochniak [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Saturday, April 15, 2000 1:57 AM To: Alexandre Kaoukhov Subject: Re: About VirtuoCD Hi Alexandre- Yes. When I sat down to implement a compression algorythem in my driver, the realization came to me that... "Wait a second, Microsoft already has a compression algorythem built into the kernel at file system level." After some thought, I decided that I didn't think that I (Nor Farstone for that matter) could not develop a compression scheme which would be more efficient than the MS compression when both size and speed were considered. While I admit that I haven't done any tests on Virtual Drive's compression, somehow I find it hard to believe that there isn't some cost associated with the increased compression. It's likely that there's some sacrafice in speed. Once I get some of the features out that I have lined up for future releases, I will certainly consider adding my own compression (Which would work on all filesystems and not just NTFS) which could maybe have a variable Size-Speed adjustment. Let me know what you think of my decision making process in this matter... Once again, I appreciate your input. You're quite a bit more educated in software than most of the people that I get questions from.. Very refreshing. Steve J. Prochniak I replied: Hi Steve, I would like remind you why most people buy CD emulation software. First, all software designed to run from CD is not sensitive to speed. Otherwise they have an option of partial or complete install to HD. Thus, most people are using virtual CDs for the convenience they add (i.e. to get rid of CDs themselves). And like in my laptop user's case to get rid of external CD drive as well. I think that most people would like to store as much CDs as HD will let them using the best compression available. Very few of us for whom money is not the problem and speed is important will just not use compression. I would stress again that I have already upgraded my Libretto's HD to 6GD and it is already 4,5GB full. Just to show you how space is important to me. As far as I know there are copyright free compression algorithm available. Another point is that there is a nasty bug in your VirtuoCD: create.vdd - add it to list - delete .vdd in through Windows Explorer - go to VirtuoCD you will see that virtual drive is still in the list - - try to insert - Windows crashes immediately. I also saw that you want to make VirtuoCD rewritable. Good idea! Together with good compression this will be decisive to bring the whole emulation CD software market to you. Last, maybe gadget feature - try to integrate to Windows Explorer: xxx.vdd right click VDD-Insert to default drive Insert to drive: (then window with choices) Well, this is probably all I may want from a CD emulator. I would also like to post part of our mails to Libretto mailing list because questions about CD emulation rise on a quite regular manner and this will also help to support your software and motivate further development. Final and personal point is that I will delay my purchase until you add good compression engine. I am a Russian student actually living in France. This means that my wallet is not full of money that all my software purchases are driven by need to support of developers of good software. I am quite cautious in this as many companies dump their customers e.g. CD Copier and Virtual Drive with its only castrated W2k support. Regards, Alexandre From: Stephen J. I guess I never considered compression of great importance because I am sitting here with 2 desktops with about 50GB each... I imagine that if I had a laptop that I'd feel the same way. v2.2 is going to be out soon... I'll get the compression algorythem into v2.3. Shouldn't be more than 2 months away. The card didn't install properly so I tried to back things out but apparently didn't get everything. The problem is that now a PCMCIA modem that used to work doesn't. It shows up in the PCMCIA part of the Win95 Control Panel, but it doesn't respond to commands and Hyper terminal complains it's unable to talk to the COM port. So, questions: What chipset/firmware does the 50 use for it's PCMCIA controller? Which files would I need to copy over to the Lib to get the PCMCIA drivers/card and socket services working again? I've got my old Lib 70 disk with Win 95 on it so I could copy the drivers from that over if the 70's PCMCIA hardware is the same as that in the 50. Not that simple. Does your friend have the driver disk for his modem? As I recall, the card and socket services has it's own data base, ( mini registry) where info is stored about each card you install. Hardware **should** be the same, for the PCMCIA port, what may get you is the memory map and free I/O. And for those Windows experts out there, what disk in the 28-disk set has the PCMCIA drivers? Thanks, -- -Jim Jim Sheaferhttp://www.tux.org/~sheafer/ Here's a little something I wrote up as a result of my experiences in getting my lib to talk IR(even run PPP) to my Palm . Hope it helps... Steve The LINUX-PALM IRDA MINI-HOWTO What this is: An attempt to encapsulate what I've learned from setting up and running the Linux-IRDA Project's IRCOMM implementation between my Palm devices and my Linux Laptop(A Toshiba Libretto 70CT). Hopefully, it will help you with your efforts. What this is not: - A treatise on IRDA or the Linux-IRDA Project. You can find that kind of info at either http://www.irda.org or http://www.cs.uit.no/linux-irda. BEFORE YOU BEGIN If you have not yet configured and compiled your kernel to include the Linux-IRDA extensions, *STOP*. Put this down and go to the above mentioned sites for background and then read Werner Heuser's Linux-IR HOWTO at: http://home.snafu.de/wehe/IR-HOWTO.html Things here will make far more sense after you've read the stuff over there :) Platform and Experience: I have been able to successfully establish HotSync and PPP connections between my Palm IIIx, IIIxe and my Toshiba Libretto 70Ct using the built-in IRDA port and also using the Belkin SmartBeam dongle. The Libretto only has a SIR transceiver on it so you won't be able to get faster than 115200bps out of it. I make no guarantees, but since Toshiba are among the most proprietary hardware vendors implementing IRDA(and therefore the hardest to get this working) you really shouldn't have any problems. HotSync via IRCOMM: WHAT TO SET UP Linux Side: Protocols/Modules: IRDA, IRCOMM,IRTTY,IRPORT all configured as modules These will auto-load when needed if you have compiled your kernel with CONFIG_KMOD=y. If you did not do this, you will need to 'insmod modulename' in the following order: irda irtty ircomm-tty ircomm. Commands: irattach /dev/devname of the physical IR transceiver As in: irattach /dev/ttyS1 -s 1 setenv PILOTPORT /dev/ircomm0 setenv PILOTRATE 115200 (go slower if this doesn't work) DON'T run irmanager. It grabs control of the IRDA port and pilot-xfer won't be able to get through to the Palm. The more detailed explanation is that irmanager is designed to smartly manage the IRDA port for things like IRLAN. Pilot-xfer is just checking to see if ANYTHING else is using that port. If it can't exclusively lock the device, it dies. It won't even try to talk to irmanager. Palm Side: HotSync configured to use IRCOMM as connection/sync method. WHAT TO DO: From the Linux side, do: pilot-xfer --sync dest dir . From the Palm side start the HotSync session by tapping on the HotSync glyph on the Palm. (You DID remember to point your Palm's IRDA port at the IRDA port of your Linux system right? :) ) WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN: After about 5 seconds you should hear the familiar sync-up chimes, followed later, by the sync-down chime when the Palm is finished. It may take a few seconds for the two to connect, esp. if the two IR ports aren't aligned well, flourescent light in the room, etc. Don't worry if you don't immediately hear the sync tones. I've had it take as long as 10 seconds for me. IF IT DOESN'T WORK: Do an 'lsmod'. Make sure that all the modules are loaded. You should see results similar to this: chameleon:~lsmod Module Size Used by smc91c92_cs15088 1 irtty 7484 2 (autoclean) ircomm-tty 32096 2 (autoclean) ircomm 14236 0 (autoclean) [ircomm-tty] irda 146369 2 (autoclean) [irtty ircomm-tty ircomm] ds 6184 2 [smc91c92_cs] i82365 21108 2 pcmcia_core37952 0 [smc91c92_cs ds i82365] chameleon:~ If you don't see these, try to insmod them manually one at a time.
