This is a quick summarise of the different type of installation,
up-to-date with 11.10 :

By using desktop ISO : Installation done using Ubiquity + a live
session, by copying the image of the CD into the system. It's the
recommend way for testing and installing Lubuntu. Note that using the
live session or the "Install only" mode will do teh same result, just
using less memory.

By using alternate ISO : Installation using debian installer type. No
live session available. Design to install Lubuntu on everything,
especially if the Ubiquity or the live session is not supported. You can
do the same with the command line, by using "sudo apt-get install
lubuntu-desktop", on a minimum Ubuntu installation (see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/LowMemorySystems#Install_an_Ubuntu_command-line_system)

Minimal installation : Only on a command line system, just install the
lubuntu-core by doing "sudo apt-get install lubuntu-core". It should
install only core components of Lubuntu + the artwork. I would suggest
to also install lxdm or lightdm to have a graphical login manager.

As you can see, the --no-install-recommends is not necessary since
11.10. It can be used for people who wants minimal depends, but you have
to be carefull, because sometimes some recommended packages are very
useful, and so not installed if you use --no-install-recommends. I don't
think we need other type of installation, unless I miss a use case :)

Back in the change of the millenium there was a common question that was
directed to Linus when he was talking some where: What does Transmeta do?
Usually couple of hands got rised with same question.

Oh well, later Transmeta released Crusoe CPU which was totally low energy
consumption CPU, a huge improvement on laptop markets (flybook for
example). Later Transmeta got purchased by VIA. You can read more about it
from wikipedia for example.

And yes Minimal CD is da thing, smartest way to install operating system.
And when you install lubuntu-desktop meta package, it will fetch the whole
thingie. lubuntu-core installs just the core, basics to build your desktop.

My understanding is different although I don't know which of us is
correct. For mine if all you're trying to do is avoid Ubiquity then
why not just use the alternate installer? To me the minimal
installation is just that, the bare minimum. From what I understand
the minimum install is aimed at REALLY low end computers or people not
wanting to download lots of data over the internet. If you have a
really low end computer you only want the bare minimum, if you don't
want to download large ISOs why would you want to download all the
other stuff anyway?

I'm happy to be proved wrong but I just have a different understanding
and hoping to clear the issue for both our sakes.

As you know, before we were adopted, we only had 'home spun' disks...

The "Full On" Ubiquity was always to be the official one, but not a great
deal of help for lower spec computers. The argument did go up as to why
they botched a bug by requiring 2 X Ram instead of simply putting your
patch in. You do not know how much this idiotic 'fix' caused, but we were
not adopted at that point and could not log it as a regression. Since then
the bug has remained, it does, Jared, really grate me as it was such a
simple fix to bloody make and get Ubiquity running at a decent speed.

To keep the peace, we were told to accept the alternate iso which does not
require Ubiquity. As the Canonical team are now also trying to build PPC /
Mac-Intel / ARM etc. I do ask what are the more important cases for the
kernel team and also the QA / Testing team to prioritise?

Julien has already made it quite clear that any group that wish support for
a particular chip set Get a testing team together & we will do it. No
decent testing team == no support. Oh, does this sound backwards?... Until
we have people to test, we simply cannot test... So go get your friends.

@ QA - do tell me where I am wrong in terms of bodies to test.

May give a better understanding.

By the way, last night, I was SO bored so I downloaded the mini iso and
installed it on one of my test PCs.  I managed to find a wired connection
(finally) because I always use the Wireless connection. I'm actually
planning to build a system that even lighter than Lubuntu (the one that we
all know). I'm planning to do some tests so later on I can install Lubuntu
instead of Linux Mint LXDE 9 on this:

By the way, YES, that laptop does work until now. At that time, Lubuntu
10.04 did not work at all and I had less experience than now. I do want to
install Lubuntu and will do whatever it takes to do that.

I agree with you too. Actually "sudo apt-get install
--no-install-recommends lubuntu-desktop" is the command I always use
because I don't have time to remove the applications I don't use (like
ace-of-penguins game, gnome-mplayer...).

Hi all,

I think we should give some explaintions in the wiki. If reader wants a
full Lubuntu desktop, just use "sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop", if
he/she wants a minimal desktop and then add new applications by
him/herself, so just use "sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends
lubuntu-desktop".

Hi Hùng,

an apology from me.

We will get it updated to the alternate ISO. As we got full adoption, the
builds and releases of Lubuntu having both the approved system and our
older not fully approved builds.

I do thank you for bringing this to our attention, we are a small team &
can miss things.

@ Julien & PCMan  an older FAQ, can it be up dated, or simply point to
a more recent area.
@ A J await until you are better & add it to the thread on the forum.

Hi all,

I just checked our Minimal Install guide at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/DocumentationHelp/MinimalInstall.

I don't know why we use "sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends
lubuntu-desktop" command to install Lubuntu. With "--no-install-recommends"
we only have Lubuntu with PCManFM, Leafpad, LXTerminal, Synaptic, Update
Manager and Preferred Applications.

As I understand, Minimal Install is for people who want to get a full
Lubuntu desktop by installing via a Ubuntu minimal CD or USB because they
can't use Ubiquity.
Using "--no-install-recommends" could make newbie confused when their
desktops almost have nothing.

I ended up using Wary (from Puppy Linux) and was able to get it running.
Not the most elegant solution, but it works.  It will probably never get
used anyway.  My friend just wanted something for his father to use when he
hangs around his office.  He was going to buy something else so I decided
to see if I could get Lubuntu on it.

My only sugestion is to try the alternate install, rather than the minimal 
method.

I found that to enter GRUB you simply press and hold SHIFT.  I added the
parameter to the end of the the boot command and booted they system and it
did the same thing.Lubuntu splash and then the screen goes blank.

of RAM.  I had a 128mb stick of pc-100 so I dropped that in to bring the
RAM up to 192mb.  I installed Lubuntu using the mini.iso.  It took a while
but the install completed.

The problem is that after rebooting the system I get the following message:

That should have been MiB not KiB.

The wiki states that 160MiB is the minimum for Ubiquity, this is true if you 
have a separate video card.  For a machine with on-board video more memory is 
required, probably 192 MiB.  The same appears to be true for the alternate 
installer.  80MiB with on-board video and 64 MiB with a separate card, although 
that is still running after 4hrs!

short outage. The checksum is correct.

The lowest amount of RAM I got it to run on was 80KiB. It wouldn’t run on 
64KiB, that may the the particular machine though.  I’m trying on another 
machine now.

As you know I'm severely hampered by the fact that only a basic 9.10 ubuntu
can 'see' my 3G device, as the pub is moving company I cannot yet order my
broadband connection. It's very frustrating, but life goes on.

If you can scribble up a set of notes similar to what I put over at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/DocumentationHelp/MinimalInstall I'll tidy
them all up and get it all posted and documented.

I'll release it into the wild and ask that it gets torrented up. Until then
it is only on my server area. iWeb are okay with me hosting beta stuff for
the lubuntu project, but obviously I do not to push my good will with them.

the iso has been safely installed onto my server area and the md5 checks out
okay. (Many thanks to bioterror for doing the transfer)

copied over the whole ISO and put it into one directory(lets call it
cd-img). Replaced the isolinux folder with the fancy isolinux folder
from the livecd with the cool looking logo png and where you can set
language with F2 and with F3 the keymap and so on.
The first thing that I did afterwards was taking the xubuntu.preseed
file that ships with the xubuntu-10.10-alternate-i386.iso and changing
it basically from xubuntu-desktop to lubuntu-desktop(I know there is a

I'm not sure I made the correct fix for tasksel, it probably needs another fix 
somewhere. But I interesting to know how you made the initial CD, because I 
only find how doing an iso with squash filesystem, but not with .deb packages.

Ah and btw. I forgot to mention as the base system is already bootable I
was able to skip installing the tasksel process and installing grub
which allowed my to boot and then install manually with apt-get install
lubuntu-desktop the lubuntu desktop system completely from the cd repo.

I created a Install CD by simply creating a minimal install CD plus a repo. 
Unfortunetly the Installation fails after installing the base system, because 
it tries to install a package called lubuntu-desktop^ in the tasksel process 
which it cant find. I tried this with the modified tasksel version of yours. I 
even checked the modification you made but cant find the error.

Well, it's not as easy as creating the normal iso. I didn't find any useful 
documentation about this. I'll continue to work on this, but I need to focus on 
Natty developpement now. At least, the minimal install can do the same job.

Hi Gang,

I do know it is possible to make a CD with the lubuntu packages on, but I
lack the technical knowledge to do this. So, if anyone has any ideas of a
work around for people with 128MB RAM and need the system installed before
it can see the PCMIA card I'm all ears. We knew this was coming, my mini-iso
version was just a patch to get as many working as I could. I lack the
expertise to take it further.

The minimal CD is not for me, it was following on from the email yesterday
of someone with a slow internet link. As lubuntu is already small, I thought
about doing one without the language packs. I'm okay using the mini-iso and
popping lubuntu-desktop on for my instructions. It's one of those things on
the "Wish List", to aide those out there who are still on dial-up. Every MB
saved is a good saving in download time. There is no real need for the team
to divert from other tasks, I suggested using remastersys as it would be
within my capabilities :-)

Once Juliene has had chance to catch breath after the UDS it can be added to
the 'list of things to do'. As there is a 'work-around' it need not be a
high priority.

Thanks for the help. But I think it's too much efforts for us now, as I would 
like to introduce some facilities for minimal installation. Also, I can re-use 
my "build system" for iso to make a minimal one, it's far easier and safe than 
"remasterys" the current one. I can't stop you to try this, but if you can wait 
a week (the time for me to go back to home), it will be available.

You were right, add-apt-repository is not included in the mini-iso; hence
the install python-software line. If you think it looks okay, I'll pop it
onto wiki. (I will remove [Note 4]).
As the beta3 now includes lubuntu-desktop ppa and you can use Synaptics to
update it i will alter the 'keep lubuntu up to date' to simply use Synaptics
(I'm adding the ppa manually on the minimal install anyway), with a note for
those who installed prior to beta3 to add the ppa.

Yes, using the mini.iso to install, adding the ppa via command line, and
installing lubuntu-desktop by "sudo apt-get install
--no-install-recommends lubuntu-desktop", you should have nearly the
same that the lubuntu iso.

archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/lucid/main/installer-i386/current/images/netboot/

then adding the lubuntu bits as per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu#Keep
Lubuntu up-to-date work?

I've seen it tried and it does seem to work, in the absence of a more
elegant solution, would this be acceptable as a short term measure? (I'll
gladly try it and make notes, if you think it has a snowball in hells chance
of working)

I've got a couple of days of 'freedom', so please ask me to do anything that
may help, as you know I'm pretty much a n00b at a lot of things but would
really like to help as we approach the general ubuntu release date. I know
we're not fully tied to it, but I expect that we are going to be asked
things like this (Sorry to be a pain in the ass).
