I just loaded the package-repository from the internet and changed it in
miktex-package-manager before starting lyx after installation to a local
folder... it works. That was my only attention. Now I'm happy! ;-) But
I use the fig2ps script (available on sourceforge) to convert xfig to
eps, and then use the eps file in LyX. My makefile has entry:
%.eps : %.fig
@echo Making $@ from $
@fig2ps --forcespecial --add=epsfig --input=../../2120/notes/
2120head.tex --bbox=dvips --eps $

OK. It's starting now.
I think it was a path problem.
I renamed the c:\lyx directory to c:\userlyx, deleted all the files there
and restarted lyx with
c:\lyx14\bin\lyx -userdir c:\userlyx
and it running now.
Odd! I just created a directory named c:\lyx and started LyX

Is there a way to have a different custom heading on the first and
subsequent pages? What I need is a specific left header on the first page
and then a different specific left header on all the subsequent pages.

It sounds like you are not embedding your fonts,
so they cannot read it if they do not have the fonts
locally.
