Re: [announce] preview test release of LyX 1.6.0rc5 for Windows

2008-10-30 Thread Murat Yildizoglu
Thanks Uwe,

It works like a charm and I have installed the small version to be used with
TexLive2005.

I have a strange problem with RC5. I have a crash-test latex document of 150
pages with graphics and everything that I try to import in each new
candidate. RC3 is perfectly able to import it but RC5 is not. Just after the
beginning of the import process, it tells me that the lyx file is from an
older version and that relyx can notr convert it. The first time, I have
thought that this was due to the presence of an older import in the folder
but I get the message even if I erase the lyx file before beginning the
import. Very strange indeed... I hope that RC5 is not less stable than RC3
at the end ;-)

A question, I have installed RC5 along the RC3 installation, following Uwe's
suggestion. Can this be a source of problem?

Best regards,

Murat

Re: Lyx 1.5.3 not showing references from Jabref 2.3.1

2008-10-30 Thread MikeM

Hi,

I have a very similar problem to the original poster. I am using Lyx 1.6 in
Windows XP and Jabref 2.4.1. I can insert citations into my lyx file as
normal and they seem fine. I can also amend my .bib file in Jabref and the
new citations appear for insertion into lyx as normal. However, when trying
to view my document as a PDF or DVI or PS my citations appear as '?' in the
text and nothing appears below my References heading.

I have updated the MikTex install and searching for .bst files reveals a
folder c:\Program Files\Miktex2.7\bibtex\bst\ with a load of .bst files so I
don't think its down to missing class files. I am using Natbib in Document
-> Settings and unsrtnat.bst (which I set by clicking on the Bibliography
insert), however I have tried various combinations of alternative settings
without any luck.

I have also checked the Jabref file for any incomplete or flagged references
which may be causing issues with the first latex run however there is
nothing obviously wrong there.

I have attached the .log file from my attempted conversions.

Can you guys offer any help? I'm pulling my hair out and have a deadline on
Monday.

Many thanks

turning towards the free side.

document class is report.

I have tried to make a clean install of RC5: I have uninstalled RC5; I have
renamed my ApplicationData/Lyx16 folder to Lyx16old and erased the lyx keys

I observe that the config folder Application Data/lyx16 is created but

Uwe Stöhr wrote:

Hi Uwe,

The installer doesn't create the "lyx16" application data folder for all
users anymore (unless asked to of course).
However, it still creates and fills the "Aspell" app data folder for all
users, even if I ask to install for a single user.

A few annoying things when upgrading to RC5:

1- My figures (pdf) do not display in LyX anymore... I get "Error
converting to loadable format" everywhere. Looks like the same issue as
another user on the mailing-list.

2- reconfigure does not work (which probably explains point 1 above):
an error window pops-up saying:
"The system reconfiguration has failed.
Default Textclass is used but LyX may not be able to work properly.
Please reconfigure again if needed."
If launched in a console, I have this (between dashes):
--
D:\LyXSVN\lyx-devel\src\frontends\qt4\Menus.cpp(588): Menu warning: menu
entries "Specific Manuals|p" and "Personnalisation|P" share the same
shortcut.

'import site' failed; use -v for traceback

  File "C:\Program Files\LyX 1.6.0rc5\bin\lib\ntpath.py", line 11, in

import genericpath
ImportError: No module named genericpath
--
There is indeed no genericpath.py nowhere, and that explains why the
reconfigure after installing is s fast ;-)

I could not find that file in RC4 after reinstalling it. I "made one"
by copying that page:
http://www.koders.com/python/fidB1801D52A7E500D99DFF977091F108F5D906B7F6.aspx?s=md5
into a text file that I called genericpath.py, but then it complained
not to find "_abcoll" module. I am stuck there... I could not find that
file on the net.

3- layout format error when loading my documents: I had to increase the
format number.

I changed the lines
Format 7
to
Format 11
and they are now fine with RC5.

Best regards,

Olivier

I don't see anything obvious. The way to proceed is to export to LaTeX
and run everything manually. Or, if you like, send me the LyX file and
bib file, and I'll do it here. Certainly, from this log, it's clear that
you have an empty bbl file, which means either bibtex didn't get run for
some reason or else it aborted with an error.

links to bibliography

2008-10-30 Thread Matthias Coy

Hi there,

I've splitted my document into seperate files. S.th. like

mergefile.lyx
cover.lyx
tableOfContents.lyx
chapter1.lyx
chapter2.lyx
bibliography.lyx

the mergefile itself only includes the four other files. So, if I create
a PDF out of mergefile, everything looks finde, the numbering of the
chapters is great.

BUT: Now I added a entry into the bibliography (->bibliography.lyx) and
want to refer inside of chapter1 (->chapter1.lyx). But, of course,
chapter1 isn't aware of the entries inside the bibliography.

How do I make chapter1 aware of those entries, without including the
document (because then, I would have it twice)?

I ran lyx in debug mode:
"lyx -dbg" lists all options, and one says:

Hi,

I had the same problem, and found that several python modules were missing.
For Imagemagick, what you need is to add functools.py, which you may
find for example at

http://codespeak.net/pypy/dist/pypy/lib/functools.py
to the bin\Lib folder in you lyx installation (usually somewhere in in
"C:\Program Files").
That's a quick and dirty fix. I think Uwe will provide soon a fixed
installer because there are at least 3 other missing python files.
Details are in my other messages to this thread (user mailing-list only,
I am not a developer).

Thanks.. so looks like pdftex and pdflatex are the same thing huh.. sorry for

Murat

LyX says that whenever the conversion process fails. It could fail for
lots of reasons. I'm guessing it may have to do with the python version,

there was any format change from rc4 to rc5. If you could run lyx2lyx

I posted a solution to this problem on the wiki. This will be easier in
1.6. That said, if you first open mergefile.lyx and then open the child
documents using the "Edit" button in the Include File dialog, I think
you'll be able to access your bibliography.

Displaymath at the bottom (LyX1.6RC5)

It occurs to me that when I am entering display math at a point where the LyX
window has nothing to show below (at the bottom of your screen), leaving the
display-math takes me back to part before the display-math (instead of moving
forward). This problem does not occur if you have written the text to follow. It
is only when you have blank to follow.
Could you confirm this behaviour please?
Let me know if I have been unable to express the problem (I am not a native

Your reply suggests that I have been unable to explain properly.
When you start a new document, type "Hi there", and start display math,
LyX can accomodate the new stuff you write on the screen.
Try to type some more text until you are at the bottom of your screen

Let me add to this that if you have your math toolbars at the bottom of

The reason is the font that you are using. Times doesn't include the \var***
characters.

In your file you use the encoding "UTF8" that is designed for Chinese, Korean, and Japanese. Either
use the language default encoding or an encoding that fits to the language you are writing in.
I admit that the encoding names in LyX 1.5 are not self-explanatory. In the upcoming LyX 1.6.0 this
is much better.

Nevertheless, Appendix A of the UserGuide of LyX 1.5.6 describes all encodings.

It is not completely clear to me what you want.

Is the vertical space between the paragraphs too big?

Do you use the "Separate paragraphs by space" GUI setting
(it is buggy)?

Set the document language to Greek and the text language (of the English
parts) to Englisch (Edit>Textstyle>Custom (or so, my LyX speaks German)).

Keith,

I'd suggest you upgrade to TexLive -- tetex is no longer maintained. You may
well find the packages you want are already included. See:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/FeatureTexLive

However, the basic installation for most CTAN packages is pretty simple:

1. Download the package -- usually the "You can get this entire directory
bundled as .zip" near the top of the page listing the contents.

2. Unzip the downloaded file.

3. Follow the installation instructions in the README file.

4. Run texhash

5. From within LyX, do: Tools->Reconfigure. Restart LyX.

See section 5.1 in the LyX Help file Customization.

The installation instructions typically are something like this (from the
calendar package):

INSTALLATION

The simplest way to install the tools in the package is to make a
subdirectory in the search path of your TeX, FTP all of the source files to
that directory, and run "latex allcal.ins". You should then be able to run
the demonstration files.

btw is there some way how this package could be used for switching paper
orientation for individual pages or from the curent position along?
i see only preamble switches in the manul...
i'm regularly facing the problem of mixing portrait/landscape child documents

This should be delivered by the LaTeX distribution. It turned out that
ChkTeX is available in TeXLive but not MiKTeX. The MiKTeX maintainer
reported me once that he had problems to compile it on Windows, but this
was long ago. I would like when you contact the MiKTeX maintainer
(Christian Schenk cs/at\miktex*org) and ask what he needs to be able to
compile it. I'm sure he will add ChkTeX then to MiKTeX.

Why not bundle it in the installer if MiKTeX doesn't distribute it? I
just managed to get it to work on Windows with MSVC 2008. There is
already MS-DOS code included which can easily be upgraded to Windows.
Maybe we can put Windows support in the official source?

Good. But your dictionary from the Aspell Windows site is probably
outdated. I'd recommend you to download the latest one from
http://wiki.lyx.org/Windows/Aspell6 .

Because this is no real solution. Everybody should benefit and not everybody build its own solution.
ChkTeX is on CTAN that everybody can access it, it is not in MiKTeX either due to compilation
problems or license issues. Please inform Christian Schenk and he will add it.

I think the landscape package handles this.

the packages around this seems to affect only page bodies, not margins, foot
etc.
i would like to have something equivalent to typeset those docs separately in
portrait/landscape mode and then paste them rotated together via pdftk (plus
minus
some page numbering)

Thank you Uwe,
I changed the font to default and encoding to utf8 and the problem was gone.

Thanks again,

How to insert a logo into beamer's sidebar?

2008-10-30 Thread Dr. Wang Yongqiao

How to insert a logo into beamer's sidebar?

I put the following code into the preamble, but it doesn't work.

\pgfdeclareimage[interpolate=true,width=1.4cm,height=1.4cm]{mylogo}{logo}
\setbeamertemplate{sidebar left} {
\pgfuseimage{mylogo}
..
}

Many thanks!
