How to make table/figure not to span columns？

Hey,all.
I use package{multicol} to make part of my document into two columns, such
as:
\begin{multicols}{2}
paragraph  in 2 columns
\end{multicols}

However, all of tables and figures within the part of document will only
appear to be normal in the output pdf when setting the table/figure 'span
columns'. I don't need all of them to span columns. How to fix this? Btw, I
use the article(Elsevier) calss.

Child document not updated

I am using LyX 1.6.2 on Vista 64. I have made a master.lyx file from where I
include a few child documents as input. I compile this master document and
preview it with sumatra pdf.

Normally when I edit and compile one of those child documents the updates
for the whole docment are shown in my PDF previewer (sumatra pdf) but that
does not work anymore. I compile the child document with the function:

master-buffer-update pdf2

Any ideas?

I do not know how others see it, but for me these two PDFs are
identical in terms of typography and layout.

Try using the fancy headers.  Document -> Settings -> Page Layout ->  
Headings style -> fancy


Then add to your preamble:
\lhead{left header text}
\rhead{right header text}

To my understanding, when you choose a View command, Lyx creates the
corresponding files in a subfolder of the Temporary folder that is indicated
in: Tools/Preferences/Paths/Temporary Folder box. The name of this folder
begins with lyx... . When you export, it uses thye base folder in which your
actual Lyx document resides.

Solved, sort of...
Well I can now call elyxer from Lyx.
Here is the black magic that allowed this (I do not understand at all why it
was not working before and why it works now ;-)  ):

I have tried several reconfigures+quits without any success.
Then I have decided to duplicate your configuration. I have moved elyxer.py
in Program Files/elyxer and changed the path in Lyx in conformity with this.
Then reconfigure and restart.

First trial Lyx has tried to run elyxer (instead of htlatex) and this was
already a success but it could not find elyxer since I have moved it from
the scripts folder. I have copied it back to this folder (without changing
my path string) and bingo! I have a beatiful HTML page.

Elyxer's result is really very nice out of the box. Thank you very much Alex
for this tool.

My preferences file now reads:

\path_prefix "C:/Program Files/LyX16/bin;C:/Program
Files/LyX16/python;C:/TeXLive2008/bin/win32;C:/Program
Files/LyX16/ghostscript/bin;C:/Program Files/LyX16/imagemagick;C:/Program
Files/elyxer"

and

I am happy that it works now but I would be happy to understand why ;-)

Export LaTeX with bbl File

When an article has been accepted for publication, one must send the  
journal the LaTeX file with the original reference to the BibTeX  
generated bibliography replaced by the associated bbl file. I keep  
instructions around to help me remember how to do this, but how hard  
would it be to have this as an export option in LyX:

Export > LaTeX (pdflatex with bbl file)?

If you view your Lyx File in PDF or DVI, it normally runs bibtex and that
creates the bbl file in the same temporary folder as the dvi file.Otherwise,
you cal also export your file in Latex and run bibtex manually. You firts
run latex myfile.tex and then bibtex myfile.tex.

No, to be able to reproduce this, can you please provide a
_small_ LyX example file?

If you send me the file, I can try to reproduce it. This is a
known sort of problem, in the sense that I know what kind of thing
can cause this. It's likely a math inset (code 11) that LyX is for
some reason failing to initialize properly.

Well, I tried to file you sent, and it doesn't crash here with 1.6.4svn, 
on Linux.

Problem with Bibliography author-year style in document class "book (KOMA-script)"

Hi,

I am writing my thesis in the book (KOMA-script) - class, and need my
citations in author-year style in the text (e.g., xxx (Freud 1928, 15)
xxx), and sorted by author (not numbered) in the bibliography.
I am maintaining my literature-database in citavi, from where I can
export the references into .bib documents.
I am working with Lyx 1.6.2 on windows, and I did not use a
bibtex-editor or anything like that.

In Document > Settings > Bibliography I chose natbib with author-year
style. I inserted the Bibliography through Insert > List/TOC..., where
I uploaded my .bib-file.
When I choose the style "plain", creating a pdf works without
problems, but the Bibliography shows up using numbers, both in the
Text - e.g.: [2, 192] - and in the Bibliography, which is not what I
want.

All the other styles I've tried (natbib, plainnat, apacite, ...)
produce various error messages when I create a PDF, and in the PDF the
Bibliography is all garbled up (Authors' names appear several times,
the German Umlaut-Letters like ö/ä/ü are not printed, formatting is
messed up, etc.).

I have been looking for a solution for hours now, and I am just not
sure where my problem lies or what to do next. Should I try changing
the document settings in Lyx (in the Preamble, for example)? Or do I
need a program to edit the bib-file? Which program would be easy to
use on windows? Or could the problem be that my .bib-file is not
configured right?

I hope for someone with more experience it is easier to tell where I
went wrong... :-)

This is almost always due to some sort of error in your bib file. A 
missing year in an entry, for example, will force BibTeX to use 
numerical citations rather than author-year citations.

If these are written with umlauts in the bib file, that also could cause 
a problem. It depends very much upon encoding issues and the like.

A bib file is just a text file, so you can open it in notepad or 
whatever. But you might want to use something like JabRef, which will 
give you a nice interface to the file.

Then don't set the option  "span colums". In case I haven't understood your right, can you please 
provide a _small_ LyX example file to be able to reproduce the problem?

I do not know how others see it, but for me these two PDFs are
identical in terms of typography and layout.


The same for me, I cannot see any difference.

ThePDFs are absolute identical here. Another user sees the same as he reported 
you.

The version 1.6 lyx file I got by exporting the 1.5 lyx file to plain 
LaTeX (attached too) and importing it later

with Lyx 1.6.


Why that? Open the file that you created with LyX 1.5.x with LyX 1.6.3 and it 
will work.

(I see that your 1.6.x version used English as document language instead of Swedish and that the 
document preamble is missing.)

I have see recten posts about eLyxer and become curious.

I would like to suggest to edit the standard stylesheet provided by
http://www.nongnu.org/elyxer/lyx.css

The text from the example is very difficult to read.

To my humble opinion, the generated html should follow the tradition of 
Lyx in creating readable, user-friedly and accessible documents.

The CSS you link is provided as a service to the community; users are
encouraged to change it on their documents with the --css option.

Yes, some thought has been given to that question. Unfortunately
producing usable output is much harder than would look at first sight
(or that should be); and getting it right for every browser on every
platform is not trivial. Font availability, scaling, etc. all change
when you switch platforms or even browsers. Many popular sites have
given up and just offer different stylesheets depending on the
browser, something which is not an option here.

I am using Firefox on Debian, and you can see that it looks great (or
at least I like it). On Windows however Firefox looks quite ugly:
fonts are not pretty. IE 7 is a bit ugly but tolerable.

Thanks, those are nice. Unfortunately they are not immediately useful.
For one thing they can be judged on personal opinion and taste. But
the real problem is that they would probably suffer from
cross-platform issues as well. Actually I see the first one with fonts
too small and the second one too large.

Same problems. But let us see if we can get constructive and get
something out of this discussion.

What we can actually do is: you, or someone else who has taken the
trouble to make the output look good on their favorite platform, can
send me your CSS files (or a patch against mine). Then I can try to
blend those in and still keep the sane look on Debian. Probably we can
find a combination of fonts and sizes that look good on the most
popular platforms. We can do it; we have already got the character set
mostly right thanks to a similar effort by another user. Now is time
for good typography!

Thank you! I fixed my bib-file (it did miss a year!), so that was
certainly good advice. I also downloaded some additional packages
through Miktex and tried out some other citation styles. Some of them
work (such as apalike or plain), but the ones I would need don't.

The citation styles that don't work all give me a lot of error
messages saying "Undefined control sequence." and the error
descriptions look something like this (this one came when I used the
style chicago):

" ...r{Aiginger}{Aiginger}{2007}]{Aiginger.2007}

The control sequence at the end of the top line
of your error message was never \def'ed. If you have
misspelled it (e.g., `\hobx'), type `I' and the correct
spelling (e.g., `I\hbox'). Otherwise just continue,
and I'll forget about whatever was undefined."

I do not know why the name of the author (Aiginger) is repeated so
often, that is not the case in my bib-file. In other error messages,
symbols like % suddenly appear in the text where there are non in the
bibtex file.

Does anybody know what the problem might be?

I tried different encodings when I exported my references from citavi
to bibtex (UTF-8, US-ASCII, Western European (ISO), ...) but nothing
changed. Is there a specific encoding I should use?

table/figure(using xelatex). Do your need the tex or output pdf file?

Using LyX 1.6.2 on Debian Squeeze, Use Ctrl + Enter and there is no
longer the space as was in earlier versions of Lyx, rather a music note
comes up.

What is the correct key combination to effect the result of Ctrl +
Shift in LyX 1.6.2 please.

Have man templates that now don't work right.

  configuration files (*.ui, *.bind) may no longer work. If some
  functions (such as Shift-right for selecting text) fail to work
  after the upgrade from previous versions, make sure you do not
  have any old configuration files in your LyX user directory, or
  adapt these files to the new functions. If anything else fails,
  try if deleting your LyX user directory helps."

Many Thanks Kimmo for not only pointing me in the right direction, but
