\over vs \frac, and large tables
Is there a way to make LyX display \over the same way \frac is displayed? \over displays as red source text, making formulas somewhat unreadable: 1 over 2 instead of: 1 - 2 I can see the point of displaying it differently to let you know it's \over instead of \frac, but since LyX is not supposed to be 100% WYSIWYG, I think it should be allowed to display \over and \frac the same, just so they are both readable. To fix it, I wrote a Perl script to change all of my \over's to \frac's. Also, how do I handle large tables with LyX? I have a large full-page table with many math forumlas in it, and if the zoom is set to anything larger than about 80%, the table is too wide to fit in the window. LyX doesn't handle it well if I try to resize the window so that the table fits entirely inside it. And when the number of rows is large, LyX sometimes jumps back to the beginning of the document when I try to move the cursor up and down the table. This is true even if I put a page break before the table. Trying to change things like justification and alignment inside table cells does not usually show the changes immediately, and sometimes it crashes LyX (the emergency file works, though). I'm not expecting 100% WYSIWYG or anything close (in fact, I prefer LyX's structural orientation to WYSIWYG editors which remember every space you type), but if LyX can display things like indentation and alignment in table cells correctly at all, it should display them as soon as changes are made, which it doesn't seem to do. I gave up editing the tables under LyX, and hand-edited the source code directly, with much better results. (I am using 1.1.6fix3 on RH 7.0 Linux.) Thanks, Lee

installing fonts
I tried to install a new font today... here is where I got: I put all the
tfm, vf, and fd files in the appropriate directories, catted the pnb.map file
to the psfonts.map file, and ran texconfig. From LyX, I am able to do a
\newfont{\rmbasker}{pnbr8t at 12pt}
to ge the font I want. With this, I am able to View-Postscript and I see the
correct font. However, -only- gv shows the font: xdvi has to substitute, and
any .ps made from a dvi has to substitute. Moreover, using
\usefont{T1}{pnb}{m}{n}\selectfont
gives me a substitution everywhere, even in gv.
So clearly I have done something right, but most everything else I have done
wrong. Where do I start?

if I change (with vim) the *.tex

I don't speak "latex", so I don't undestand the code.

And so i get !
but there is a tradeoff:
\vspace{1ex} is nice for paperoutput (dvi)
no \space is nice for htmloutput
maybe this is better for htmloutput
\renewcommand{\lyxline}[1]{\hrule}
It's nigth, too late to make a choice

Creating lyx templates
This might have a significant amount of cross-over between what is truly lyx vs what is required formatting in Latex. I am trying to produce a standard company template that will follow my company's general formatting rules, and have run into some of the following difficulties. I have scanned some of the documentation, but am at a loss where I might find some of these items. Any help is appreciated. Issues: o Using a "non-standard" font, that is available in MS Word. Need to use the fonts so that they match exactly? What abilities is provided in lyx/latex to import fonts from other platforms and to use these fonts to produce PDF/PS files? o Importing JPEG images into document. Also, using JPEG images in header or footer. o If anyone knows of any documentation doing a walk-through of setting up a latex template and using it in lyx... I have found examples of completed templates, however, my knowledge is still a bit weak to move from an example to a completed template. Thanks in advance, Vern
Bug with long table
I try to create some longtable and get a strange result. When I mark my new table as longtable and mark some lines as Head, 1st Head, Food, etc, I get malformed head and food in output file. In lyx-file I see some field filled with negative value: \begin_inset Tabular If I correct manually, table work correctly. This bug exist and in latest CVS version. Example in attachment. I am looking high and low to find a demoprint of the fonts available for use with tex/latex. Always, what I find is the font package, but no way to view what the font is before I download it. The link on Herbert Voss's webpate, to http://riker.ps.missouri.edu/PrintingServices/Fonts.html is broken. Are there other links I should try?

There is something wrong with the setting of your spellchecker (I
am still using ispell, so I cannot help with yours, but try man
aspell).

They do. Since latex2e, encoding information is usually included
in the preamble in the form
\usepackage[latin1]{inputenc}
(check your setting in Layout/Document/Language/Encoding -- it
should be set on 'auto').
Actually, without that we Czechs would be very sorry -- there are
at least three encodings being actively used for Czech texts and
some other three ones which ocurrs sometimes :-).

No, he has been asking about _table_ captions, not _section_
titles. There must be a special package for that somewhere on

NO! Justification is exactly the most strong aspect of TeX (and
LaTeX therefore) -- it makes the stuff much better than any other
commercial program used for typesetting (except for Adobe
InDesign, but not for their PageMaker). The only other exception
which makes it as well as TeX is lout (and only because the
author copied the algorithm from TeX). Why do you think so many
high-tech professional publishing houses use TeX for their work?
For your problem: try to highlight cells in the particular column
and then set alignment in Layout/Tabular/Column-Row/H. Alignment.

You can use \linewidth as a unit (so, .55\linewidth is a legal
expression for the column width).

Try to read btxdoc.dvi in your distribution of TeX. Hint: program
called bibtex is called automagically by LyX when needed. It just
process records from your .bib file in the form which is needed
by LaTeX. BibTeX databases are really just a text files to be
written (try bibtex-mode in Emacs, or pybibliographer in GNOME).
They consists from records like this one:

but you need to read more about them. Try above mentioned .dvi
file and an Emacs mode -- although I really hate EMACS, this is
the only part of it, which I used for a couple of years with huge
satisfaction.

The export into LaTeX is done everytime you hit Ctrl-D for
previewing your document in xdvi, there it MUST be and it IS 100%
accurate.

As said above, export to .tex is 100% accurate, so there is
nothing preventing you from sharing your files with the rest of
the world. The only problem is that your friends will find some
of the .tex files slightly confusing (because humans do it
better), but of course .dvi/.ps output is 100% same as the
document you would write in plain LaTeX (just, it takes less time
to do it in LyX :-).

Don't forget when you use \frontmatter, \mainmatter and \backmatter, put \frontmatter in the LaTeX preamble, and put \mainmatter as ERT on a line BEFORE the first Part. Note that after mainmatter you can put an ERT \appendix line, and all chapters after that will be labeled "Appendix A" instead of "Chapter 19". After the appendices you can put an ERT \backmatter line, after which all chapters are unnumbered. I had a little problem in \backmatter because the sections in the backmatter chapters retained the appendix numbering scheme. no, not yet possible. find out your textwidth and give the different
columns a width so that they all fit the whole width or use tabularx
in ert.

I'm using version 1.1.6fix3. Actually, I think you misunderstood my
problem. When I type the accented characters they show up fine in LyX.
That is, I can type the "á" directly.
What I would like is that, when I export the document to TeX, the
characters that I typed in directly as "á" show up as "\'{a}". After
more searching I found the "iso8859-1.cdef" file which appears to be
there to define how to translate accented characters to "\'{a}" for
example. The problem is that it doesn't seem to be working.
As far as the spellchecker, I'm using aspell not ispell. After some
testing, what seems to be happening is that words such as "introducción"
are checked correctly, but "introducci\'{o}n" is checked as incorrect. I
don't really know much about aspell, but I would think there is a way to
change this behavior. If anyone knows how, please let me know.

Don't know if this is what you're looking for, but there is a LaTeX
command: \MakeUppercase{} which changes whatever is within the brackets
to uppercase.

size of characters in pt
Under layout -> character -> size tiny smallest .. huger is given. I wonder whether somebody knows which one corresponds to 8 pt which the publisher wants me to apply to legends. And to the developers: Could these infos be written behind the character size selections (e.g. small (8pt)). Or is it a relative measure, depending on the layout _> document -> font size? The main problem arised from NOT being able to see the menu icon for the sum in MDK 8.1 (since mdk 8.0 i had some of the math panel menu's invisible) and I think it was being in hurry made me jump to sigma and give a false alarm, I am sorry about that. Bug in labelnames?
Hi I just found something that I think is a bug in version 1.1.6fix3. My document had equations with an equal sign (=) in the labelname. When viewing the document in ghostview the references to the equations turned up as questionmarks, that is, they were not replaced by a eq number, this without any warnings or errors from lyx. Exporting to latex and running latex throws a number of errors. Doing some testing with different label names, I found that the equal sign was the one character I could not use. Is this a bug or is there a reason for this behaviour? /johan ingvast

This is defined by the LaTeX style. Try the koma-script family
instead of the default styles. (That's in Layout->Document.) It will
change other details, too.

Should be possible, but justification has always been a weak point of
LaTeX (imho).

Very difficult. Using two rows is the easiest, if possible. Otherwise
you can define multiline cells with linebreaks. You have to define a
widths, imho. Details depend on the exact LyX version.

Not that I know. Emacs does it with M-u. So if anyone could write this
for LyX...

Yes, this can be done using LaTeX. You can specify the column width as
part of the paper width. I don't remember the exact syntax, though.

Imho it should be a math macro. Look it up in the help, they are easy
to define an use.

Use a protected space (Ctrl-SPACE).

I always do this manually, with a left bracket and an n by 3 matrix.

BibTeX databases are just text files. You can write them with your
favourite editor, or you use one of the several special programs for
BibTeX files.

No, the export is 100% accurate (more or less). It is the import which
not infallible.

Well, not really. Unless the formatting of the tex-file is kept (which
cannot be done), exchanging files with TeX "purists" is always a bit
difficult. Export and import is a way of communicating this to the

Hello:
I am new to the world of Lyx, LaTex, and Linux, but am learning fast. After
only a week with all three I am most of the way though writing my first
journal article using Lyx. But, I've run across several snags that I'm
hoping someone can help me with. The list is a little long since I am so
new...sorry about that. I have scanned the help files, email list archive,
and two books on LaTex, but with no luck.
First, I would like to use a different font family (sans serif rather than
times) for table captions. Is there a global way to set this? I know there
is an easy way to globally change the size of the font by using a certain
caption package, but I want to change the family, not the size.
Second, I would like to get rid of the default justification for text in a
table column. Is there a way to do this without having to enter the
\rightragged tex command in every single cell of the table? I would like to
have my text \rightragged, but I cannot find a way to set the whole table
(or even whole column) that way at once. Is there a global solution?
Third, some rows of my table are intended to fall on two lines. One
solution in the Lyx guide is to actually use two rows, but I don't want to
do that. The other solution listed doesn't seem to work for me. It says to
enter a "\\" at the needed text break and then check the "linebreaks" button
on the table format popup. I cant find any "linebreaks" button. If I just
type in "\\", it starts an entire new row from scratch, and does not just
move the intended second line down below the intended first line in the
column. Where is the linebreaks button, or what else am I doing wrong?

horizontally space itself away from the right part (the cases). Here is an
example of my command:

{cases}
I use the \cr above because I could not get the correct command "\\" to type
in during math mode. But, although \cr will properly split the cases onto
two lines, every time I close the file and reopen it, it gives me an error
when sending to postscript and I have to retype the \begin{case} and
\end{case} commands again. How strange. Is there a way to send the "\\"
command in math mode to properly split the cases onto two lines? Also, the
"&" character is supposed to move the case text (e.g., "if K=1 and") to the
right. However, all it does is literally print out the "&" symbol so that
it reads "10+k&if K=1 and". Is there a way to get Lyx to properly
left-right split the cases from the equation proper?

I think the Lyx program is wonderful in that I love the wysiwym ability.
I'm sure there are many improvements being planned and worked on. One
suggestion, which might be a hard one, would be to have it natively save its
files in *.tex format and do all the conversion behind the scenes. That
way, one could just email in the *.tex file to a journal for publication. I
know that there is an export function, but I think I read that it is 95% or
so accurate in conveying the full meaning of what was typeset in Lyx. If
this is true (is it?), then that 5% might be some crucial part of the
manuscript and the author could miss the error if he/she was not careful in
