Rudi: I'm using LyX and not LaTeX (although I had to use LaTeX when I
was trying to make custom .bst files).

Vaclav: I looked under MenuToolsPreferencesPaths, but I can't see
anything like lyx_tmpdir? or lyx_tmpbuf???.

I'm using Windows XP if that helps.

change the style using a .bst file generated from the custom-bib

there's no reference list at all. The same thing happens when I use
any .bst file downloaded from the web. I'd like to use natbib to get

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
when I saw similar behaviour in LyX it was usually caused by some error or
warning of bibtex. When I resolved them, I worked fine.

To check what bibtex is doing, go to temp directory (see.
MenuToolsPreferencesPaths). There, you will find a directory
lyx_tmpdir? with subdirectory lyx_tmpbuf??? each directory belongs to one
file open in LyX. Find the one related to your document and there you will
see a file maned as your document with .blg extension.
This is the bibtex log-file. Try to resolve errors and warnings listed there.

Actually, a plugin to PmWiki (which is what wiki.lyx.org uses) can
probably do this. Have a look at

The primary purpose is to generate PDF from the wiki text, but since I
know that the transformation goes as

wiki - XML - LaTeX - PDF

it seems reasonable that you can get the LaTeX. The author's name is John

I forgot to say that I plan to install this plugin at wiki.lyx.org, I just

is easy to then generate LaTeX output, I'll probably add that as well. So

Save your .bst styles in another directory (e.g. c:\localtex\bibtex) and try

I am now facing a big problem, though: LyX refuses to read the LaTex

and in particular with reLyX refusal to read correctly the high codes
for the accented letters. In fact, any file containing an accented
letter will exhibit the same behavior, at least on my system: once
exported as LaTeX it cannot be reimported back into LyX (I enclose a

Hi, LyXers

I fixed some bugs and changed a lot in the installer, here's the
changelog:

https://developer.berlios.de/project/shownotes.php?release_id=11890

have other people been successful with this installer ?

I tried the previous version, and the current one. But
 - lyx.bat just opens a dos-box, immediately closes it again and dies.
 - lyx.exe returns the spartanic error message:
This application has failed to start, because the applicatioon
configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix
this problem.

I reinstalled it, restarted the machine - to no avail.

Previous versions of LyX run ok on my machine
- 1.37 (very well)
- 1.43 (unsatisfactory regarding instant preview).

Greetings,
 H.Peter

Further info: switching the converter from reLyX to tex2lyx does not
help. If called from within LyX tex2lix fails as reLyX did. If called
from the command line, it does indeed succeed in producing a Lyx file,
but with screwed up accents (i.e. é -- lower capital accented e, for
instance. Other screw-ups are even more exotic). Besides, the file does
not compile into pdf (as it should be expected, I guess)

LyX/Mac-1.5 alpha available for download

2006-12-20 Thread Bennett Helm

LyX/Mac 1.5svn (20-12-2006) is available for testing here:

http://edisk.fandm.edu/bennett.helm/LyX/LyX-150.app.zip.

LyX-1.5 is currently in active development. There are currently many
bugs and crashes which may destroy your data. This should not be used
for real work. You should also note that LyX-1.5 uses a document
format that is not readable by LyX-1.4.x.

Nonetheless, we are interested in getting feedback from users to help
us improve LyX-1.5 before its release. If you find any crashes,
please report them to the LyX Developers' mailing list: mailto:lyx-

Well I am using edgy and I see little flakiness. It is actually more

 1) The short release cycle (6 months) means that some bugs are not
 properly sorted out.

 2) On the other hand all linux apps are overall slowly getting more
mature and stable so if you use the latest distro you use (in principle)
somewhat more stable software. Of course when major new features are
added to an app this argument is not valid anymore.

Maybe, I upgraded too quickly last yr and went from Ubuntu Breezy to Dapper
before it was official.
OMG, was this a mistake. I now know I should have installed it via a chroot,
and tested it out. But anyway, I learnt the hard way and broke a production
machine.
It might be a little too conservative not to upgrade to most shiniest version,
but I retain my sanity, or some thing that looks like it. ;-)

In fact, that's where the file is, and that's the library application
directory, according to the About LyX panel.
Moreover, neither copying the chkconfig.ltx file to the dir LyX seems
to be looking in (/usr/local/Resources/lyx, nor creating an environment
variable LYX_DIR_14x makes any difference. Same behavior and same error
message.

Hi,
when I saw similar behaviour in LyX it was usually caused by some error or
warning of bibtex. When I resolved them, I worked fine.

To check what bibtex is doing, go to temp directory (see.
MenuToolsPreferencesPaths). There, you will find a directory
lyx_tmpdir? with subdirectory lyx_tmpbuf??? each directory belongs to one
file open in LyX. Find the one related to your document and there you will
see a file maned as your document with .blg extension.
This is the bibtex log-file. Try to resolve errors and warnings listed there.

The primary purpose is to generate PDF from the wiki text, but since I

I forgot to say that I plan to install this plugin at wiki.lyx.org, I just

is easy to then generate LaTeX output, I'll probably add that as well. So

LyX/Mac 1.5svn (20-12-2006) is available for testing here:

LyX-1.5 is currently in active development. There are currently many

LyX and QPainter error messages...

2006-12-20 Thread Nick Hopton

Hello All,

Running LyX for Windows Version 1.5.0svn (Thu Dec 14 01:49:58 2006) on
XP-Pro. At start-up I get the following messages in the terminal window:

lyx: Disabling LyX socket.
QPainter::begin: Paint device returned engine == 0, type: 2
QPainter::end: Painter not active, aborted

Can anyone tell me what is happening here, LxY appears to be looking for
QPainter but not finding it even though I have installed Qt 4.2.2 Open
Source Edition? Most of the features of LyX still seem to work okay, but
I'm curious about the messages.

Regards,
Nick.

Well I am using edgy and I see little flakiness. It is actually more

 Ubuntu:

Hi,
when I saw similar behaviour in LyX it was usually caused by some error or
warning of bibtex. When I resolved them, I worked fine.

To check what bibtex is doing, go to temp directory (see.
Menu>Tools>Preferences>Paths).

The primary purpose is to generate PDF from the wiki text, but since I

it seems reasonable that you can get the LaTeX. The author's name is John

In, Menu>Tools>Preferences>Paths is an entry "Temporary directory".
This directory is different in different systems, that is why I wanted you to

So, files lyx_tmpdir? or lyx_tmpbuf??? are in "/tmp" on my system.

I forgot to say that I plan to install this plugin at wiki.lyx.org, I just

Oh, that would be the classical problem of MikTeX, which does not like spaces

Save your .bst styles in another directory (e.g. c:\localtex\bibtex) and try

Re: Help with mis-converted accents

Thanks to Charles and José have been able to reconvert all the
LaTexified accents into proper form.

I am now facing a big problem, though: LyX refuses to read the LaTex
files back in. The problem must have something to do with encodings,
and in particular with reLyX refusal to read correctly the high codes
for the accented letters. In fact, any file containing an accented
letter will exhibit the same behavior, at least on my system: once
exported as LaTeX it cannot be reimported back into LyX (I enclose a
one line file below as an example). The file compile correctly from
within LyX, though.

Any thought?

I fixed some bugs and changed a lot in the installer, here's the
changelog:

https://developer.berlios.de/project/shownotes.php?release_id=11890

have other people been successful with this installer ?

I tried the previous version, and the current one. But
 - lyx.bat just opens a dos-box, immediately closes it again and dies.
 - lyx.exe returns the spartanic error message:
"This application has failed to start, because the applicatioon
configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix
this problem."

I reinstalled it, restarted the machine - to no avail.

Previous versions of LyX run ok on my machine
- 1.37 (very well)
- 1.43 (unsatisfactory regarding instant preview).

Greetings,
 H.Peter

Thanks to Charles and José have been able to reconvert all the

I am now facing a big problem, though: LyX refuses to read the LaTex
files back in. The problem must have something to do with encodings,
and in particular with reLyX refusal to read correctly the high codes
for the accented letters. In fact, any file containing an accented
letter will exhibit the same behavior, at least on my system: once
exported as LaTeX it cannot be reimported back into LyX (I enclose a
one line file below as an example). The file compile correctly from
within LyX, though.

Any thought?

Further info: switching the converter from reLyX to tex2lyx does not
help. If called from within LyX tex2lix fails as reLyX did. If called
from the command line, it does indeed succeed in producing a Lyx file,
but with screwed up accents (i.e. é --> lower capital accented e, for
instance. Other screw-ups are even more exotic). Besides, the file does
not compile into pdf (as it should be expected, I guess)

Why don't you use the re.sub function ?

LyX/Mac-1.5 alpha available for download

2006-12-20 Thread Bennett Helm

LyX/Mac 1.5svn (20-12-2006) is available for testing here:

.

If you find any crashes,
please report them to the LyX Developers' mailing list: . If you find other bugs, please look at this
file first before you inform the developers: .

I was quite eager to try out the new features, but unfortunately the
app does not open: "You cannot open the application "LyX-150" because
it is damaged or incomplete"

This happened on a PowerBook G4 12" running MacOs 10.3.9

Sorry. I should have noted: Intel Mac only.

Re: BibTeX styles

2006-12-20 Thread John Hughes

Thanks - I've moved the files to somewhere without spaces in the name
and now it works perfectly!

Oh, that would be the classical problem of MikTeX, which does not like spaces
in filenames.

Save your .bst styles in another directory (e.g. c:\localtex\bibtex) and try
again.

altering document class

2006-12-20 Thread jim
I need to make a minor change to the mwrep report class, so that
the Bibliography is labelled `References' instead. I am using lyx 1.4.2
on ubuntu linux. I know nothing of latex but screwed my courage to
the sticking place and edited /usr/local/share/lyx/layouts/mwrep.layout
 and /usr/share/texmf-tetex/tex/latex/mwcls/mwrep.cls simply changing
instances of `Biibliography' to `References'. I ran Tools/Reconfigure
and restarted lyx. The section is labelled `References` within
the app but
when I prepare an output file it is still called Bibliography. Can you
tell me
how to proceed or point me to some docs please?

Thanks!
