Emilio, to use the "apacite" BibTeX style, you need to use the "article
(APA)" document class. It doesn't work by itself on any document class.

If you need to cite in APA style on any given document class, it's better to
use the "apalike" BibTeX style. On minor problem is that it only comes in
english. But if you need it in any other language, you'll need to do a
search for words like "chapter" or "in" and replace them with their
equivalents.

Try parking the attached (hacked) copy of amsdefs.inc in your local 
layouts directory (probably C:\Documents and Settings\your name 
here\Application Data\LyX1.4.x\layouts), then restarting LyX.  It works 
under LyX 1.4.4 and should work under 1.4.3-5.  I added one line 
(OptionalArgs 1) to the Title layout to turn on Insert -> Short Title. 
Actually, I'm not sure why this is not standard in the AMS layouts.

I have been trying for about a week to get apacite to work with no luck in
either lyx or texshop.  I'm almost ready to start using word again as at
least I know how to get citations working...if anyone can share a simple lyx
file that demonstrates how to use this package I would be really really
grateful.  As far as i can tell i have the latest files (from the tex Live
distribution), regardless the citation never renders correctly.

  This is another Richard ... and I use Palatino for my LyX documents. It's
one of the standard PostScript fonts, is very well designed, and reads
easily. I use a different font for the screen; one that has heavier strokes.
They don't need to be the same typeface.

I think I didn't get all of the 1st part of your reply, but I tried
the suggestion it 2nd part with no success (at least on my machine):

I tried to export to pdf first as a normal user on windows: LyX
prompted me to install the lmodern package, but it did not produce any
result since I suspect that MiKTeX simply does *not* install the
packages because it does not have write access to its folder (under a
non-administrator account).
Then I tried as an administrator and there it came the mess! No prompt
for package installation and no output.

Is it normal I can't even find the lmoder package on the MiKTeX Package Manager?


The default installation does not install lmodern. However, MikTeX
does have it. (I have myself installed it on a MS Windows.) Try to
find out how to install non-default packages with MikTeX. (I cannot at
the moment help further, as I am on a Linux machine.)

Any of the Type 1 fonts will work fine, so far as xpdf and the like are 
concerned.  There's something funny that happens with the CM fonts. As 
for the way Century Schoolbook looks, it's pretty good. I find it a 
little fussy for my own writing, though. I'm just a boring old Times guy

question on titlesec package

each chapter. I am using titlesec package and in
preamble I put:

about rc1

 1) I haven´t crahs in lyx 1.5.0 rc1 (like beta 3).
 2) I have a little problem with tools bar. I put 3
tools bar at the rigth margin of screen in 2 columns.
This work ok. But when I close lyx and then reopen,
this 3 tools bars appears superpossed in only 1
column.
 3) Session manager work only a few times. Most of
times, when I start my computer (linux) Lyx no open
and I must make click in incon.
 4)Cursor is very slow when I am making a selection of
text with keyboard.
 5) I can see a lot of warning messages when I am
compiling lyx like this: 

warning FIXME
warning FIXME!! The graphics cache no longer has a
changeDisplay method
warning control reaches end of non-void function.
warning handle non existing files
warning this function should be moved to
buffer_pimpl.C
warning look here
warning this will not work any more when we have
multiple views of the same buffer
warning broken?
warning Why not pass a proper DocIterator here?
and so on

 I don´t know severety of this messages.

No, it is faster than the universal, but not as fast as the one

Another question (for everyone): would it be preferable to produce  
a universal binary (assuming we can work out the performance  
problem), or would you prefer separate versions for Intel and PPC  
Macs?
It is of course nice with ONE Mac version. On the other hand it will  
be a larger binary, and there is no major problem for a user to  
select version.
So, I guess my opinion is: If you can fix the performance issue, a  
universal binary would be nice, but in my opinion it is not a major  
priority.
But as you I think we need to understand what causes the performance  
lag to ensure 1.5 binary(ies) with good performance.

I reported also slow typing on a G4 mac; I want to add that this is  
not  a universal version but a svn version that I compiled on a G5;

I think there is a problem with the PPC version.

2) you use some special fonts that are not embedded in the final pdf.

Pdf's, by definition, should not depend on any LyX files.
Check http://wiki.lyx.org/FAQ/PDF and if you do not find a solution send a
minimal example of your pdf.


I thought that pdf, being a "portable document format", didn't need
any special setting on the machine you use. Anyway you can view a

Red Hat just released replacements for the common Microsoft proprietary fonts:
https://www.redhat.com/promo/fonts/
including replacements for TimesNewRoman, Aerial and CourierNew.

The second release towards the end of the year will include the full
hinting necessary for perfect presentation.

Anyway, a bit irrelevant to the OP, but I've been waiting for this for
a while and wanted to share it!

Congratulations on moving to Linux. IMHO a wise choice indeed.

Perhaps some of your fonts weren't embedded, and maybe they were truetype. You
can install Truetype fonts on your Linux computer. Each distribution has its
own method for doing this -- check Ubuntu's.

Some fonts are ugly and pixelated at certain magnifications, even if they're
embedded. Also, different PDF viewers do better and worse jobs with fonts.
For instance, the gv viewer doesn't do a good job with fonts. xpdf is better.
You can download, free of charge, a Linux version of Acroread, which does an
excellent job with fonts.


By the way, kpdf is also a very nice pdf viewer.

Congratulations on moving to Linux. IMHO a wise choice indeed.

Perhaps some of your fonts weren't embedded, and maybe they were truetype. You 
can install Truetype fonts on your Linux computer. Each distribution has its 
own method for doing this -- check Ubuntu's.

Some fonts are ugly and pixelated at certain magnifications, even if they're 
embedded. Also, different PDF viewers do better and worse jobs with fonts. 
For instance, the gv viewer doesn't do a good job with fonts. xpdf is better. 
You can download, free of charge, a Linux version of Acroread, which does an 
excellent job with fonts.

By the way, if you have Linux questions, Troubleshooters.Com has a lot of 
Linux content.

I am a new Lyx user using Debian 4.0, Lyx 1.4.3 and am trying to insert
a graphic image within a floating figure in a Docbook (xml) document.
My "Document Class" is set to "DocBook book (SGML)" and I am exporting
to "Docbook (XML)" but I get errors:

book.xml:16:18:E: document type does not allow element "inlinemediaobject" 
here; assuming missing "title" start-tag

My first line of defense (google and man pages) was to no avail.  In fact
I found very little information that was relevant except for how to do
what I had already done.  By trial and error (and examining the xml output
of Lyx) I found that I could insert a graphic successfully outside a
floating figure if I appended a label.  The same method failed for floating
figures.  I found it odd that this seemingly trivial task would be so
difficult to achieve.  If the two problems are related, I suspect it has
to do with the placement of a para tag.  But this really has me stumped.

The Lyx code is below followed by xml exported output from Lyx.

Not really... The larger file size could perhaps have an influence,  
but this seems to happen also for machines with quite a lot of RAM.


Could it be due to QT? I guess you compiled it as a binary. Could it  
be that the optimisation in that case only gets done for one platform  
(i.e. Intel)?

Hi

I would like to define a style/environment which is effectively a standard
paragraph indented by a certain amount, with a small graphic file in the
margin created by the indent. Apart from the text in the paragraph,
everything is fixed, i.e. the graphic is a specific 75x21px image and the
indent is 100px.

(If you haven't guessed already, this is one of these "take careful note"
paragraphs that crop up in operating manuals.)

There are several "nearly" structures in place already, e.g. I wondered if I
could persuade \marginpar to use a graphic instead of text? Or if I could
clone one of the list styles to use the desired graphic?

Has anybody achieved this kind of thing? How did you do it?

can you be a little bit more specific? What exactly is bad?
1) bitmap fonts, as explained in http://wiki.lyx.org/FAQ/PDF#toc5
2) you use some special fonts that are not embedded in the final pdf.

Pdf's, by definition, should not depend on any LyX files.
Check http://wiki.lyx.org/FAQ/PDF and if you do not find a solution send a
minimal example of your pdf.


I think I understand the problem that Diego reports. The pdf viewers
in Linux are more accurate and if the fonts are not included in the
pdf file, the quality of the document on the screen looks not so god,
although on paper it looks perfect. If you are using the default LaTeX
font, then put the following line in the preamble of your LyX
document:

\usepackage{lmodern}

and your pdf files will look great on screen.

The change tracking does not really help you with the editing operations.

It merely shows what were added or deleted and by who. Which can be
useful as it is - it is much easier to find the (few) changes made
in a big text in order to review them.

I don't think the change tracking can reduce the amount of work
in such a merging.  It may be helpful used like this though:

* Import the changed latex file into a new lyx document.
* Turn change tracking on in the old document you have edited.
* copy+paste the entire new document into the old one.
  Perhaps one big copy, or perhaps section by section so that
  each seaction appear twice - new and old.

You now have a document where everything is listed twice,
except where there are differences.  And all the stuff
done by the other author is marked as "inserted" with LyX
changetracking.  You can now work to eliminate all the marked
stuff in order to do the merge:
* Where no difference exist - just delete the extra paragraph - obvious.
* Where difference exist, either:
 - delete the new
 - delete your stuff, accept the new section so it is no longer
  marked as changed.
 - rewrite/manual merge sentence by sentence.  Accept all your
   own changes immediately, of course.

This won't save any editing work over not using changetracking.
What it will do, is to give you an easy way to find remaining work,
as you can always just go to the "next change" using the changetracking
toolbar/menu.  This way, there will be no forgotten double pieces
in the middle - you will never have to search for unfinished work.

To really save work here, learn to use the changetracking feature.
Then show your coworker LyX, perhaps he'll be impressed enough
to use it - you can then pass LyX documents back and forth
using changetracking. LyX will not prevent him from using LaTeX,
he may still apply all tricks he knows using ERT.

Yes, you did. I can't really tell how spaces should behave when inserting,
because I don't use RTL, but as long as all magic (if any magic is used at
all) only happens during/after inserting the space and not anywhere else
(drawing or export) I think the resulting code will be maintainable.
If you apply magic at different places then you will get a nightmare that
nobody understands in a few months anymore.

way when you type the opposite arrow. Some word processors behave  
like that,

and I don't like to use them :).

What we are investigating right now is the handling of spaces on the
boundary of RTL and LTR text. Take a look at the picture. The blue
underline marks the character which have a RTL font. So the picture
shows the four cases possible.

There are several possibilities now to interpret the underlined
spaces (short RTL spaces):

* The LyX 1.3 magic way: the RTL spaces behave in fact like LTR
spaces, i.e. they are put where non-underlined spaces would be. See
this example:

  - In "english WERBEH_english" the _ is in fact behind the W
So in Latex you would write "english\R{HEBREW } english"

The consequence is that the cursor strangely (IMO) jumps from behind
the W to the right in the moment you enter the space. If you have
used LyX 1.3 you might be familiar with this behavior:

  "english |WERBEHenglish" ==> "english WERBEH_|english"

If you continue now typing a character the cursor (and the space)
jumps back:

  "english WERBEH_|" ==> "english |H_WERBEHenglish" ==>
  "english H_WERBEH_|english"

* The non-magic way: the spaces are no special characters. They stay
at the position you type them. See this example:

  "english |WERBEHenglish" ==> "english |_WERBEHenglish" ==>
  "english |H_WERBEHenglish"

If you change back to English and continue typing the cursor will go
to the right, i.e.:

  ==> "english H_WERBEH|english" ==> "english H_WERBEH |english"

In Latex you would type the same:

  "english \R{HEBREW H} english"

Of course two spaces, one inside the RTL, one outside, are merged
silently by Latex,
i.e. "english \R{HEBREW }" will look the same as "english \R 
{HEBREW}".

This is a sign of corrupted eps files.
Missing bounding boxes can be restored by program called "ps2eps", 
http://www.tm.uka.de/~bless/ps2eps

After correcting your eps, you can try to push them through epstopdf again.

Copy and paste as text in your LyX document everything between (and
including)
\begin{align*} and \end{align*}. Now select everything you pasted and then
hit Ctrl-m.

In LyX you get the align* environment through Insert>Math>AMS align
Environment
and you add more row/columns through Edit>Row&Columns.
