Openoffice Draw should work on both platforms, but draws heavily on
the ressources.

Ipe  is a Qt based vector drawing app that
uses LaTeX for text. Ipe for win is at
http://luaforge.net/frs/download.php/2730/ipe-6.0pre30-win.zip
and Ipe for Linux might be part of your distribution.

You might consider using the psfrag LaTeX package for this. It can
replace alphanumeric labels in eps files with LaTeX constructs
defined in the including document. (Drawback: it does not work with
pdflatex.)

I can't reproduce your problem with a very simple example text using
your layout.

If you send me your thesis preferably cut down to the minimal amount
that still exhibits the problem I'll have a look.

Lyx crashing on custom template

Hi,

Upon installing Lyx 1.5.4 (+ MiKTex) on MS Vista, I can open up my
custom template fine, but trying to view the main.lyx as pdf generates
an error "Undefined control error" - viewing the chapter alone
generates the same error but I can view the pdf. Installing Lyx 1.5.3
allows me to view as pdf fine - is this a known regression and has it
been fixed in subversion?

Thanks for pointing that out. That was actually the first thing I
tried. I figured its LabelType must have been defined as
Top_Environment somewhere but I couldn't find it. It's defined as
Counter in numarticle.inc, so it should not be display on top at all.
I tried defining it again as Counter or other labeltypes in my own
layout. Nothing works. LyX always shows the label on top and not to
the left. Maybe I've found a bug?

Creating LaTeX File Programmatically: The Solution

  Well, I've learned a lot of LaTeX -- and how it needs to be written in a
Python program -- with re-writing this report. And now it's done. Looks
great; works like a charm.

  If anyone wants to see the results, ask off the list and I send you the
file. I use pdflatex to compile it, and it certainly looks much nicer than
did the ReportLab version.

  I don't mind contributing this to the Wiki if Christian (or anyone else)
thinks there might be future interest in this, but I did not try it with LyX
because I knew there would be a lot of adjustments to get the positioning
just right.

Missing the Obvious?

  I'd greatly appreciate having eyeballs other than mine looking at the
attached code. It compiles file both as a python program and using pdflatex
to produce the output. But, ... it prints the table on the second page,
despite there being plenty of room for it on the first page.

  No matter how often I look at the code, I don't see what's pushing the
table to the next page. Probably fresh eyeballs will spot it right away.

  Well, OK. I'll put in my opinion. If you want total control over your
vector figures and plots, take a look at PyX (http://pyx.sourceforge.net/).
It's a python wrapper over LaTeX and PostScript. Truly multiplatform. Does
it all. Of course, it's not drag-'n'-drool, but you can do whatever you want
with it. The default outputs are .eps and .pdf; pick one or both.

It used to be  inset-toggle  but nowaday it seems to be
next-inset-toggle.

If only Linux and Windows are required, I'd recommend Inkscape. It is
much more polished and user friendly than Xfig whose UI is a bit

It is really important that you check twice and make sure that all
child documents are encoded in "utf8", because just one miss can
cause that complaint. Here, with LyX 1.5.4 on Linux and Italian
language, I can not reproduce the behaviour you are describing.

Until now (LyX 1.5.4), I think that having a master document has the
only advantage of allowing you to build a single pdf/ps/whatever
output file, out of all the child documents, without the need for
merging them with 3rd party applications.

Another advantage is that you can write child documents without
thinking much about little inter-chapter LaTeX adjustments; then you
can put all the ERT adjustments in the master file. I hope you
understand my pseudo-English. ;)

It is likely that further versions will permit you to perform better
and deeper management of child documents from within the master.

If I understand right, you are asking if master document contains
the list of its child documents. The answer to this question is
obviously yes :) but I'm not sure that this is what you mean..

I'd say that I was quite sure until you encourage me to re-check
things. 
Well, I checked one by one all the documents and... there was not a bug,
but a slip from me: there were one between the set of documents where
the encoding was "latex-default"; Changing it to "utf8" as were the
remaining (then saving, updating dvi, etc..), and clicking at the xdvi
preview ... was (magically) perfect (again :-)

in the same directory as the text files. You can, however, create a
subdirectory below the one with the text files and keep your images there.

  Vector images scale; bit-mapped images don't. The lines on vector images
are cleaner and sharper than those of bit-mapped images. The format depends
on the content of the image. You can use either with a LyX/LaTeX/TeX
document.

needed by the text. They are sketch, diagrams, graphics, draws, etc...
made with The Gimp most of the times, also some formed images caught
over there or even scanned, whatever...

If you enable the AMS math option in the document settings and then put:

\numberwithin{figure}{section}

in your appendix it puts the figures in an A.# format, but it doesn't
restart the numbering. If you put this in the preamble it would number
all figures per section but I'm assuming this is not what you're
looking for. Maybe someone else knows how to reset the numbering of
figures.

Honestly, I hope to get to explain good enough. The issue is very
simple. 

What I've done until now in order to sorting this out has been just
taping in the preamble, inside "\rhead{}", the string I wanted to be
appeared there (using the fancyhdr). But how to do if I want the same
result using code? 

I've tried several combinations, but without results. Actually, I never
knew much what I  was really doing, since I know nothing about LaTeX,
but the "try and error" method didn't gave me a only chance either.

In a pdf document ("Page layout in LaTeX", Piet van Oostrum, Utrecht
University, 2004), page 10, it shows several examples of this, more...
what I wanted was there... !!!, __just__ the third from the end, very
simple:

which belongs to a string without the word "Chapter" (or whatever),
without the number of the chapter, _with_ lower case letters. 

It doesn't work for me, and for sure that I'm doing something wrong

If I could get it, I could think into the idea of build a
"book" (forgetting the master/child documents), and then directly
printing it, since the rest of settings (margins, etc.) are always the
same for all "child" documents.

Numbering of floats in appendices

How do you change the numbering of table and figure floats to include the
appendix letter. E.g.,

In Appendix A, I would like Table A1 rather than a continuous numbering
system from the main text. I looked around at the appendix package and in
the LyX Docs and came up empty.

Crossref are rather fragile in BibTeX, try to remove in the @incollection
the publisher and isbn fields.

Excuse me, but I don't quite follow: you wrote, encoded, and typeset all child 
documents in UTF8; and when coming to a parent document, you are trying to 
write, encode and typeset the whole thing again in UTF8, right? You mean, the 
language settings for all documents are exactly the same, and the LyX process 
breaks?

If that's the case you may have stumbled upon a bug in LyX. Otherwise please 
recheck and state your case better.

You may also help to diagnose the bug trying another encoding. Make two copies 
and try "language default" or "Latin1" in all documents on each copy and see 
what happens.

Sorry, you have to try. I do child documents with the default encoding (Latin1 
IIRC) all the time, without a problem.

Hi again,

These days I've got the (longed-for) moment where much of the work was
definitively done. Result of this is a set of different LyX documents
(book-style), each one is a chapter. 
I've tried that called master/child document, but the resulting preview
is absolutely unacceptable, 'cause it doesn't get to treat accents
properly, so it puts other characters just where there should be an
accent. My mother tongue, Spanish, is a language full of accents
everywhere so, after mastering the set, the "crashing" aspect of each
page is really awful. Besides, this adds more characters per page, which
alters the desired position of most of the sections/subsections,... 

In the master, Document > Settings > Language > Spanish, and encoding
"LaTeX default"
but into each child document, I have set Language Spanish too, but
encoding "utf8", with good results. 
If I switch to "utf8" in the master settings, the xdvi preview gives me
a lot of warnings about this fact, obviously. 

So I don't know what to do, if I should abandon the idea of building a
master document,since I don't see clearly which advantages it really
provides. Anyone could point me any? Besides, the master document has
not built-in the sets of child documents, has it? Consequently, the
whole set of child docs should be there forever, if I've understood it
rightly.

WRB - Summary of Experience with LyX

First, I vote for LICK.

If the goal is to be a TeX product, then extend the language, and
avoid the sound of plurality,

Second, I think LyX has a wonderful potential, and a magnificently
executed actual.

I have learned from where most of the text formatting is controlled,
and it is surprisingly easy.  Don't understand why I can't there also
find *strikeout* among the forms.  Also, why not add ability to
select the font, when also selecting weight (bold, medium) and
other features (normal, italic, slant)?  Yet, these are minor points,
and surely there are other mechanisms to which a LyX user should
turn.

Some of my experience is akin to that of one who transitions
between editors, like those of use who use Borland Turbo Pascal
for a number of years, and then moved to BRIEF.  Ventura Publisher
has its mechanisms, and LyX has a different sent.  Sometimes, 
the mechanisms are homomorphic, sometimes not.

In learning to use the mathematics interface took a little time,
mostly because of not reading the manual I should think but,
it is quite natural now.  The integration of the mechanism with
the corresponding keystroke is wonderful  For example, when I
need a variable that is subscripted, such as a label in a figure
to which a text reference is needed, I simply select the proper
font, which opens a box in the text, and there, I type, for instance,
A_i, and the subscript box automatically opens, ready to receive
the i.  Behavior like this is quite natural, and smoothly implemented.

Third, the political sensibilities of some participants hinders the
collective goal.  The generally friendly manner of postings does
much to attract the interest of others; attacking those who show
interest is a contrary force.

I frankly have no preference for operating systems, nor for the
systems which others provide.  Complaining to me about the
political struggle between Microsoft and Sun, or Microsoft and
the free-software movement, is like preaching to an atheist.

I don't care about such things.  In their stead, I accept that the
marketplace of ideas will win the struggle for truth, and that will
bring minds.  All good things to those who wait.

I do care about helping the occasional activity, such as that
which is LyX, and offer therefore those observations which may
be useful.  If they get used, fine; if they get ignored, fine.  It is
all the same to me.

Fourth, I got some very good assistance from the developers
and senior users, for which I am quite grateful.  Even in those
cases where replies were less patient, I got valuable replies
that allowed me to greatly reduce the time to both acquire
knowledge of the tool and produce a timely submittal of paper
to conference.

Now, with more leisure, I may turn to the online documentation,
and gain more thorough familiarity with LyX.

I am comfortable with LyX, and know a smidge of TeX.  So, I
am reasonably confident of being able to master the tool, even
if it does now seem as if I am aboard a row-boat, in the middle
of the Pacific.

In LyX 1.5.4 I could not find the "Use babel" option. 


Sorry, it is a General setting (don't know why) under

  Tools>Preferences>Language Settings>Language


Not here on LyX 1.5.4 running on Mac OS X.

You can't get to this setting from the Tools or Document menus. Here 
it's actually:


LyX > Preferences > Language

"Use babel" seems to be a default: that's what I have here and I haven't 
ever played with this setting manually.


Just curious, are the LyX menus different on other supported operating 
systems? (Giving menu-clicking recipes on this help list would be a pain 
if it's so.)

Again, I'd like to get some help from here about some issues where I'm

vainly most of the times... I thing I do not get to catch most of the
substance. As I've already said in previous occasions in the list, I
have no idea about LaTeX, but I work using LyX in order to produce my
own work documentation. 

One of the doubts is how to do a footnote from a table element, if
possible. Lyx behaves as it had been done, but it hadn't, according with
the xdvi preview. I'm working with LyX 1.5.1, and here I can find a work
around easily, e.g. using the x^n math function, but... it's not the
same and I'd like to know..

I've not found anything about that in the documentation that LyX comes
in.

If only Linux and Windows are required, I'd recommend Inkscape. It is
much more polished and user friendly than Xfig whose UI is a bit
daunting.

Xfig runs fine under cygwin (as, in fact, does LyX itself).  Cygwin provides
excellent tools for making windows appear like linux; this may or may not
be what your colleague wants.  And there is a learning curve here.  But one
possibility is to install Xfig and LyX in cygwin, with no need for MikTex.

For information, see http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/LyXOnCygwin.  There are pre-built
cygwin binaries for LyX-1.5.x available.

Of course, there are also other vector drawing programs (besides Xfig), so
what is outlined here is not the only option you have.

I can't see any option about babel in Document>Settings>Languages.
However I think the default is babel and any way I have tried

Change the \inputencoding line from ascii to auto.

The problem is in the convertion from tex to lyx where tex2lyx sets the wrong 
inputencoding. The problem is that tex2lyx reads the following line of 
test.tex and assumes (correctly) the encoding:
\usepackage[ascii]{inputenc}

The problem, as far as I understand, is that later tex2lyx converts the ascii 
symbols to latin-1 (ngerman encoding) but keeps the inputencoding as ascii. 
So I think that line 308 of preamble.cpp wants to set encoding and not 
inputencoding. The fix should not be difficult after this diagnose. :-)

This problem happens both for lyx 1.5.5svn and 1.6.0svn.

I am starting a document project with a colleague using lyx. The goal is to
obtain a big document of a technical course. My colleague uses the windows
version of lyx and I use the linux version. At this initial stage we can easily
share simple documents.  Now we are concerned with the use of a common vector
drawing program that can be used at both platforms. The main feature that we
require is that the vector drawing program can annotate drawings with latex math
formulae. I am quite satisfied with the current support of xfig at lyx using
external material. However, as far as I know, xfig only runs at linux machines
therefore we are looking for an alternative program. Could anybody care to give
us some recommendation? Any advice related to other aspects of such a project
are also welcome.

it seems that i've got a problem with lyx2lyx, when i try to import .tex 
documents which i've created with openoffice.
lyx always reports an error to me, that the conversion-script failed, 
because the created .lyx file comes from a different

my os is windows xp sp2, i use openoffice 2.4 and lyx 1.5.4.

i'm not sure if this is a bug of lyx2lyx or the import of .tex documents 
created by openoffice doesn't work at all.

Why does Windows LyX 1.5.3 care about Xetex?

In a document that uses the pdflscape package to render landscape pages, I
recently got an error that I had not encountered before. When I tried to
compile the PDF (pdflatex), I got a LaTeX error that said something like
"ifxetex.sty not found" with details that made it clear that pdflscape was
the problem. I can't recall exactly what it said.

My first attempts were to track down and update lscape and pdflscape. lscape
comes in the graphics package and that was up to date (this is a recent
install of LyX and MikTeX). After some fruitless searching for how to get
pdflscape in MikTeX, I found that it was included in the oberdiek package,
and that was also up to date.

So, I went and updated my MikTeX packages (the only ones that needed
updating were authordate, floatflt, pdfpages, cm, caption, and babel) and
also installed the ifxetex package, and the problem went away. I don't think
any of the packages but ifxetex have anything to do with pdflscape. Why in
the world does a Windows installation of MikTeX and LyX care about Xetex --
a Mac TeX system?? Is this a new addition to the pdflscape package?

Sorry, I mis-read your post. I don't have dvipost installed and I
tried installing but it failed to build.

This was the first time for over 2 years that this happened. Normally MiKTeX 
makes no problems.

I read next day that MikTeX repositories are broken so updated MikTeX could
not work with LyX.

LyX is great. MikTeX sometime makes problems. This fact shoulde be marked
somewhere in LyX reconfiguration procedure, maybe.

Yes, wait for 1.6. It will come with a completely rewritten macro

You are very welcome to try out the development version and report  
problems with the macros. I use them extensively for my own thesis,  
but some more testing would be very welcome. The alpha2 should be out  
soon if you don't want to compile from source yourself.

I'm looking for a way to set the align environment as the default one in LyX for
multiline formulas. E.g. when in display mode and I press Ctrl+Enter I want the
formula to use the align environment instead of the eqnarray one.

Is it possible? If so, how can I do it?

As LyX's linebreaking algorithm does not include hyphenation of longer
words, some very large inter-word spaces frequently occure (especially in
languages with many long words as e.g. German).

Readability can be improved by setting the paragraph alignment 
in the LyX window to "left".

This does not influence the appearance of the printout.

Drawbacks: 

* the Edit>Paragraph Settings dialog will display "default (left)"
  even if the default alignment of the class is "block".

* Paragraph indentation is supressed


Is there a way to retain paragraph indentation
(with Document>Settings>Text format>"Paragraph Separation by indent")?

Sorry, it is a General setting (don't know why) under

  Tools>Preferences>Language Settings>Language

Try \usepackage[greek, english]{babel} in the Preamble. It might solve
the issue.
