Dates

2005-09-27 Thread alain . didierjean
I use a personal letter template based on koma-letter2.lyx. It prints to-day's
date in the document allright. The problem comes when I display or print an old
letter: the date that shows up is to-day's, when I wish I had saved the date I
wrote it. Any way to achieve that ?
- get to-day's date at writing time
- save this date in the document and keep it there so it appears unmodified
whenever I reprint the document

Writing letters...

2005-12-01 Thread alain . didierjean
I use the Koma-script letter template with some adjustments for my
correspondance. Nice looking. The problem comes with envelopps :
1) Is there a template to print C6/5 envelopps ? If so, where ?
2) I sometimes use windows envelopps (also C6/5). How cant I get the address of
my correspondant to print on the right side of the page, at the window position
?
I dived into scrguen.pdf and almost drowned. So pleease help !

Mayday: problem with french quotation marks

2006-02-22 Thread alain . didierjean
I just reinstalled LyX 1.3.5 on a brand new computer. I'm writing in french and

appear as spanish upside down exclamation-mark and question-mark. I remember
having the problem once but can't figure out how I solved it. I use latin9
coding and french
both in Preferences and Document. Other combination like french (gutemberg) or
other codings won't do any good. Please help...

Proposed feature

2006-05-03 Thread alain . didierjean
Could once and for all the lyx window "remember" its size at time of closing and
reopen next time with said size. Default opening size is ridiculously small, too
small to work in it and this could be a solution.
After all, computers are here to avoid us repetitive tasks...

lyx 1.4.1

2006-06-10 Thread alain . didierjean

I just installed lyx 1.4.1 and started playing with it. Once you get used to the
new interface, waoo ! It feels great.
I was told in the past that the size of the opening window was configurable now.
Did I dream? I couldn't find where I can do it from.
Also, I couldn't find a manual about the new version and new possibilities. Does
that mean the good ole doc is up to date ?
Thanx for the help to come...

I personally use exam.cls which comes along with an exam.layout. It contains
all you need for most tests and exams. I found it on the lyx wiki, I think.

Notes in 1.5

2007-07-27 Thread alain . didierjean

Lyx 1.5 has been made available for gentoo-users for a few hours.
First comment - Waoo, looks great

1.4 lyx documents take sometimes to load... doesn't matter much as I think it's
due to file format conversion.

Now to the point : I've been dreaming for years for a kind of notes (or
comments) that could be printed or not in the final document, at the author
will. I mentionned it here, and somebody (was it JML ?) replied it would come
with 1.5. Is there such a possibility, now that we have 5 kinds of notes ?

I think, after a quick look, it could be feasable with greyed notes,
from the preamble.
The other possibility would be to change notes type (from lyx notes to greyed
and back). In that case, some kind of global command would be welcome...

An other wish would be to be able to navigate thru a document according to the
type of entry: jump from listing to listing, from list to list, from citation to
citation... one type of revision of a long document is about consistency of
typography in same type of entries...

I'm going to go on playing with that great looking software which seems to work
ok at the moment on a Gentoo'd amd64 X2 computer.

Congrats to the whole team, 1.5 is obviously a great step forward...

lyx & KGhostView

2007-07-30 Thread alain . didierjean

lyx 1.5 uses KGhostView as a PS viewer. Why not ? only that it seems to carry a
full bag of bugs:
- when reloaded, the file viewed goes back to page 1 and magnification 100%.
- if you go back and fore after modifying the lyx output it will pretyy fast
lose track of it and show blank pages
- quite often it will display only parts of graphics (mine are .xfig)

Now, two questions
1) Do you experiment some problems with KGhostView?
2) Is there a way to configure lyx to use good'ole gv?

THanks, folks.

-Classic UI & toolbars

2007-08-21 Thread alain . didierjean
I like Classic UI better than Default and would use it if only... I could find a
way to modify toolbars showing from it. (Hope my poor english is clear enough
guys). A few questions:
1) Is there a way to choose which toolbars show and which don't from Classic UI
?
2) After a quick look, I couldn't figure out how to add this feature as a menu
item in Classic UI. Anybody can help ?
3) My personal feeling is such a feature belongs to Preferences. Am I wrong ?
Thanks for the help,

PS: I know it's been said before, never mind: USING LYX 1.5.1 is GREAT.
Thanks to the developers.

Gentoo future

2008-04-20 Thread alain . didierjean
After being a user (for at least a year each) of Redhat, Suse, Debian I finally
went to Gentoo and intend to stick to it.
What I like most:
- I had to reinstall only once, when I changed my computer. That's great !
Experience has taught me that, should a new version be issued, the safer and
least time consuming way to keep up with other linux is to reinstall. Not on
Gentoo!

- the other great feature is the abundant, detailed and practical documentation.
You're never left on your own.

Which is where a problem lies: the doc being so big, most of the time, the best
way to find what you're looking for is to ask for a pointer on this list. It
sure works, but I think it's about time to launch a help indexing project. What
do you think folks?

Wish, suggestion about templates

2006-08-28 Thread alain . didierjean
Lyx preferences allow to modify the default templates directory.
Problem: I use 2 templates directories (zs I guess some people)
1 system wide (/usr/share/lyx/templates/)
1 personal (/home/alain/.lyx/templates)
So I'd like to be able to fix it as default dir in preferences as well as the
first one instead of being stuck to $HOME in the templates request box.
Should be straight forward...

Missing features

2010-12-16 Thread alain . didierjean

I just updated to LyX 1.6.8 on my gentoo amd64 box. Which mean I downloaded the
sources and compiled locally.
It appears that some features are missing or unreachable:
- no menu item to insert pagebreaks, hyperlinks, URL
- no way to display available symbols
- no way to spit main window.
There might be other missing features that I havn't found yet.

So what happened ? Is it my compile or are they gone from this version ?
Will they be back on 2.0 ?

One option is to do Insert>Formatting>Clear Double Page before each of them.

Try something like this in a layout file:
Style ChapterDPage
CopyStyle Chapter
LaTeXCommand chapterdpage
Preamble
\newcommand\chapterdpage[1]{\cleardoublepage\chapter{#1}}
EndPreamble
End

Richard

PS Please keep questions on the list, in case someone else was watching
the thread, and so that answers will be archived for later searching.

The cleardoublepage{} command forces the beginning of chapters on an odd page.
Finally I use the openany option and
cleardoublepage{} whenever I want to make sure a chapter stars on an odd page.
It works fine.
By the way, the I'm typesetting in lyx the 'Oeuvres complètes' of Arthur
Rimbaud as provided by Gutemberg project. If anyone is interested, let me know,
I'll be glad to send it as a lyx or pdf file whenever it's finished.
Thanks, Richard for the help,

See Richard, you and probably 20 other people on this list ALWAYS know
what's available. I've used Openany but didn't remember it. People
regularly reply to a question "How do I make it do such and such?",
you guys reply "oh, you just \usepackage{so_and_so}" and you're right,
it works. You guys have spectacular memories.

Frustrating for me is I have no such memory, and unless I can review
all my layout files and find an answer, I'll have to re-ask the
question. CTAN is no help because it lists hundreds of packages, but
not by function. For whatever reason Google ends up listing solutions
like I do -- writing a bunch of LaTeX to do the job because the author
didn't know about a simple package.

I'm thinking if there's a way we can create a document that lists
packages and other little tricks (openany for instance) **BY
FUNCTIONALITY**, newbies stand a fighting chance, people like me can
remember in a matter of minutes rather than hours (or worse yet,
reinventing the wheel), and people like you will get less of the same
old questions.

I think the format of this resource should be a single web page with
lots of links, arranged in a hierarchy. A good example is my Linux
Library page:

http://www.troubleshooters.com/linux/index.htm

The beautiful thing about this page is you can either drill down, or
if that doesn't work, you can search the single page for keywords.

Another wonderful thing about it is it's actually maintained as a tab
indented outline (by VimOutliner or Emacs org mode or with any text
editor). So adding a new resource is almost instantaneous. Then you
just run an export program that turns it into an HTML page. In my
opinion this is much cleaner, easier, and faster than the traditional
Wiki page.

If you guys want to do it this way I'll be glad to give you the source
for Linux Library's HTML export, and I'll modify it so that for each
group you see the navigation down to it. I'll also take a primary role
in putting this hierarchical list of links together and pointing to
existing documentation resources, and maybe writing some new ones for
the project.

If we do this, people with great memories won't be the only ones who
know everything, and people with great memories will have much more
time to do real work rather than ask repetitive questions.

Bright idea. I support it.

localizing lyx

2011-05-14 Thread Alain DIDIERJEAN
Following the openrc update in gentoo amd64, all locale variables suddenly
vanished. I created a /etc/env.d/02locale file which includes
LANG="fr_FR.UTF-8".
lyx loads with english menus. It's only after exporting LANG from .bashrc that
I can launch it from a shell with its french menus. To achieve the same effect
from KDE menu, I have to set the launch command to LANG="fr_FR.UTF-8" lyx.
My preference would be a global setting (as it used to be), as all users on my
machine are french.
I have the same problem with most of the apps.
Any comments ?

All together 982 lines as above.
Besides that, gentoo amd64 works fine on my box and I emerge everyday packages
to upgrade, except those which are kde's.
Questions:
- what the hell is this mess, did I do something wrong ?
- have any of you got the same kind of troubles ?
- is there a way to go back to an up to date clean install, I mean besides
reinstalling from scratch or going for Ubuntu ?
Reasons that make me go for gentoo 8 or 9 years ago:
- excellent docs. (as of to-day, some docs need updating);
- easyness of maintenance, no need for periodical reinstall (I'm not sure this
time);
- stable packages are renewed in time, not too soon, not too late;
- portage works like a charm.
Hope I can get some help

You build LyX yourself? On what platform? You've installed the developer
version of hunspell library (including header files)?

I did compile LyX as well as hunspell on my machine, as well as any other
package: it's an amd64 gentoo system. As for configuring Lyx so it uses
hunspell, just go to Tools/Preferences/Language/Spellchecker.

using gentoo linux, packages are compiled localy. Adding luatex and xetex
support means recompiling lyx.

more than weird. This seems linked to the use of any book class. articles,
letter, lettre, exam compile ok while a book class document of one line (title)
returns:

Problems with graphics

2003-10-31 Thread Alain DIDIERJEAN
Please, help a beginner : I'm working with Lyx 1.3.1 on a Debian Woody.
I've used tables with no problem. Now I try to insert a graphics (.pbm) in an
article document (it's the same in a book) as such, or as a float. It won't
compile and return a bunch (actually 4, or 5 as a float) of errors :
#1 :
Extra }, or forgotten $.
 ..._algo_von_neuman} Le modèle de Von Neuman}

I've deleted a group-closing symbol because it seems to be
spurious, as in `$x}$'. But perhaps the } is legitimate and
you forgot something else, as in `\hbox{$x}'. In such cases
the way to recover is to insert both the forgotten and the
deleted material, e.g., by typing `I$}'.
#2 :
Same as #1
#3 :
Missing $ inserted.
 ..._algo_von_neuman} Le modèle de Von Neuman}

I've inserted a begin-math/end-math symbol since I think
you left one out. Proceed, with fingers crossed.
#4 :

What give ? What am I doing wrong ? Please help...

Thanks, Herbert, but renaming the image to von-neuman.bmp didn't make any
difference. Here is the part of the file that makes a problem...

Thanks for the fast answer. Did what you said, got one more eror !
In short :
Insert Graphics --> 4 errors
Float Figure, then Insert Graphics (my (wrong) way) --> 5 errors
Float Figure, then Insert Graphics (your (right) way) --> 6 errors
I'm getting crazy and frustrated as I want my students to have some pretty
figures in the support text they get...

Problem solved, Herbert's way. Thanks to all of you for being helpful. I'll be
back, for sure... As for considfering installing 1.3.3, I'll do it as soon as
I'll have switch from Debian Woody to Mandrake 9.2 (I use my computer more
and more as a workstation, producing text (as support to the courses I give),
short source code (exercises or examples for my students) in C, Python,
Ocaml.. and compiling it, getting docs and papers on the internet and I feel
less and less fond of administration, having prcticed for 15 years.. ). Also,
I quite often need the very last version of the software I use (cf LyX),
which can be a problem with Debian.
In short I like Debian a lot but think it's no more adapted to my needs...

default.ui

2004-01-11 Thread Alain DIDIERJEAN
I just recompiled LyX 1.3.3 on debian Woody after a disk crash. I was
successful and the new version works great. When I used v.1.3.1, I had loaded
a proper .ui file for french (named francais.ui or something like that) along
with the executable. There was nothing of the kind (but the default.ui)
coming with 1.3.3 sources . I could'nt find a french translation of the
interface on the net. Any idea, someone (preferably a standard file than a
personal translation) ?
Thanks in advance.

New message, same ole' problem

2004-01-16 Thread Alain DIDIERJEAN
My last message received no answer. I do miss a french translation of LyX user
interface ( a .ui file). I know I can cook my own by myself. But I'd rather
use a more "standard one". I had one which came along with 1.3.1, lost. None
with 1.3.3 sources. Does such a thing exist ? If so, please mail it to me.
Fast (I have a few impatient new users who will go back to their Words if
they can't use LyX in french).
Thanks,

Thanks everybody, I finally got the right answer to a wrong question. For some
reason I thought .ui files where the only way to translate menus in lyx. I'm
back on the right track and everything should be OK to night.

Of course, removing the cross references fix the problem... creating a new

- any idea ?

Did it. Doesn't make any difference.
Any other suggestions ? What's this "active character" problem about ?

The problem is a known bug, specific to french and solved in texlive-2011. I
have found a work around and I'll have my docs in time. Some discussions about
it are in the french mailing list (in french of course).

Weird X display

2012-02-09 Thread Alain Didierjean
Since I tried to swich to a frame buffered graphical display, following all
steps described in the Framebuffer and Radeon pages of the gentoo wiki, all I
get is a display of vertical colored stripes, the pointer appearing as a
square.
Knowned problem ? where should I look in the arcane config of FB, X and radeon
(my graphic card is an ATI 3600)? I'm desperate.

2008-11-09 Thread alain . didierjean
I can't find an "exam.layout" to use exam.cls in lyx? I used to have a working
one but can't remember where I found it. Any cue ?
Thanks in advance,

I finally found a working ? (i.e. not fully tested yet) exam.layout in a mail
archive:
http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-users@lists.lyx.org/msg66809.html
it's by Andréas Becerra and does the trick. As I guess some of us lyx users
actually
have to write exams, it may be about time to have an exam package, at least on
the wiki.
Sorry, I don't have time (and not sure to be able) to do it myself.
Hope this helps,

So far away from...

2009-07-18 Thread alain . didierjean

Broadway (and Hollywood) appear as found in doc/LaTexConfig.lyx and as not
available from menu Documents/Parameters. They're here :
/usr/share/lyx/tex/broadway.cls
/usr/share/lyx/bind/broadway.bind
/usr/share/lyx/layouts/broadway.layout

/usr/share/lyx/tex/hollywood.cls
/usr/share/lyx/bind/hollywood.bind
/usr/share/lyx/templates/hollywood.lyx
/usr/share/lyx/layouts/hollywood.layout

All the texhash and Reconfigure can't change that ! What give ? Help, my whole
carreer in the showbiz depends on them...
BTW, it's a LyX 1.63 fresh install.

a footnote in a footnote

2009-10-28 Thread alain . didierjean

At the moment I'm trying to demonstrate the power of TeX & LyX to an old friend
of mine who plans to write a book. For that purpose, I have pasted a text (in
french & latin) document of his, an try to shape it with LyX. My old friend is
delighted by what he sees, as compared with his usual .doc.
Now I have a problem : at some point of his text, there is a footnote that
includes a footnote. LyX refuses to include footnotes in footnotes. I tried
\footnotemark and \footnotetext, that doesn't work. Is there a LyX or LaTeX
solution to that problem? I'm pretty sure my old friend will be sorry not to be
able to switch to LyX, which doesn't let you have footnotes in footnotes...

Annexes

2004-04-28 Thread Alain DIDIERJEAN
I'am a LyX beginner and quite happy with it. The problem I meet
shouldn't be really original, and before digging deep in LyX-TeX-LaTeX
arcanes, I wonder if someone has a solution for it :
I'd like to have a special new section available in the layouts I use
(mainly book):
name : Annexe (in french)
showing up as a chapter, renumbered from 1, showing in TOC
something like:
Annexe 1
Le théorême de Schmoll
...
Annexe 2
Le sexe des papillons
...

The content being long citations ior references pertinent to my text but not to be
included in the course of it and being available at any time...
Any clue ?

Printable notes

2004-05-06 Thread Alain DIDIERJEAN
Questions from a newbie (LyX 1.3.4 user)
1) How to incluse Bibliography (from LyX) in TOC ?
I know, it's been asked recently, but I couldn't make sense of the
   reply.

2) I use the book format to write my courses support. Is there a way to
use some objects like Notes that would contain some ideas, exercizes
and thinkings that could be printed in professor's version and NOT
   show up in students copies.
Thanks...

Newpage in A TOC

2004-08-03 Thread alain . didierjean
Is there a way to insert a \newpage in a TOC ?
It's a two parts standard book where Part II appears as the last line of a page
when its chapters numbered from one appear in a new page.

French quotation marks don't print correctly

2004-10-06 Thread alain . didierjean
I use LyX 1.3.4 on Gentoo Linux.
French double quotation marks (<>) and they show up all right in LyX.
But in DVI, or PS, or PDF they print as ¡¡quoted¿¿. (in case it doesn't print
correctly in this message it's:
2 upside down exclamation marks quoted 2 upside down interrogation marks (yes,
the spanish ones).
How can I fix this ? Where ?

ec fonts

2005-05-13 Thread alain . didierjean

I use lyx-1.3.5 on Gentoo linux to write support to courses :
- in french
- some maths
- lots of algorithms
- lots of code (mostly C)
I'm very happy with lyx, but I've been advised to install ec fonts to get even
better results. Two questions :
- is installing ec fonts worth the bother ?
- where to find some detailed howto that could help a somewhat newbie regarding
Latex admin ?
Help and answers welcome.

You are right, kpsewhich ecrm.mf returns
/usr/share/texmf/fonts/source/jknappen/ec/ecrm.mf
when the help file "Latex Configuration" shows
2.1 EC fonts Found: no
which brings more questions
- how to check if ec fonts are active in Lyx by default ?
- in case they're not, how to make them active by default ?

Thanks for the pointer, I'll certainly read those docs.

I already have a very comprehensive book in french "Latex" by Bernerd
Desgraupes. Excellent, but sparse on details about fonts...
Anyway, thanks for the very helpful answer, Matej.
