Re: [announce] LyXWinInstaller for LyX 1.6.4

2009-08-26 Thread H. Peter Gumm

Hi Uwe,

a few days ago I installed LyX+MikTex under Windows 7 (Enterprise
Edition) using your Altinstaller Complete (i.e. LyX 1.6.3 plus MikTex)
and to my great delight

  * It was a breeze - everything went smoothly*

Just, towards the end, when LyX starts checking for installed packages
- one ought to suggest to users to go out for dinner. When after the
dessert Lyx is checking : dont panic.

Thanks for a great installer,

Greetings,
H.Peter

How to nest enumerate environments in Theorems

2007-10-24 Thread H. Peter Gumm
Hi LyXers,

sorry for a perhaps silly question, but I was unable to solve it with
the User Guide.
In AMS-style, I need to enumerate items inside Example, Theorem, or
Lemma environments

I want them to look roughly as follows:

Theorem (i) blabla
(ii) blablu kjkjkjk
 oioioi oioio
(iii) blubla oipoipoi
  ipoipoipoipoipoi

The only way I was able to nest an enum environment inside a theorem is
by putting Ctrl-Space Enter in the Theorem then do an enum and
increase its depth. Unfortunately, this produces the layout

Theorem
   (i) blabla
   (ii) blablu
   (iii) blubla

But I don't want
 - the empty line after Theorem
 - the exaggerated indentation

Wat is the trick, or where can I read how to do it ?

Thx,

H.Peter Gumm

Magnification of screen fonts in LyX 1.5.2

2007-10-22 Thread gumm
Hi,

can someone please help me setting larger screen fonts in LyX 1.5.2?

In previous versions I used

   Tools/Settings/Screen Fonts/Magnification % 180

but this seems not to work in LyX1.5.2 under Windows-Vista. All it does is
magnify the spacing between words and between lines. The font itself
remains as before.

Is there a quick workaround ?

How to crash LyX1.5.0beta2

2007-07-06 Thread gumm

Hi Lyxers,

due to some serious work i have to do with Lyx i need to stick with the
generally very reliable 1.5.0beta2 for another next 2 weeks. Still, I
observe a strange crash, so I suggest that someone makes sure that this
crash has not been inherited by the current release candidate.

Essentially, the crash always happens with the WindowsXP-version when I
navigate through a table using Shift-uparrow and Shift-rightarrow.

I attach a stripped down version of the file which consistently causes
this crash. Below I also include a copy of the error message.

rightarrowtriangle from stmaryrd.sty causes LyX/LaTeX error in new release of ?NFSS ?!?

2007-05-08 Thread gumm

Hi,

I have always been using the style stmaryrd since I need
the\rightarrowtriangle symbol.

Now, after updating LaTeX, my LyX throws an error at me, saying:

LaTeX Error: ***NFSS release 1 [EMAIL PROTECTED] found
  I can't find file `,',

Then there is the following hint:

The new release of NFSS doesn't support the [EMAIL PROTECTED] command
any longer. Please upgrade your file to the syntax of NFSS release 2
  using the \DeclareSymbolFont command.

What does that mean in plain english ? Who is NFSS ? Upgrade whom ? And
how ?
Perhaps there is a simple (legal with ?NFSS?) way to obtain a
rightarrowtriangle

without stmaryrd ?

Greetings
H.Peter

Re: Export from LyX to HTML

2007-02-23 Thread gumm
Nick,

thanks a lot, your advice got it working.

I have not been able export from LyX to html. The error messages (see
below)
on the LyX-console seem to suggest that htlatex cannot deal with paths
containing
spaces. Is this true, oand if so, there a way to circumvent this ?

Before you do anything else, try this. Go Tools - Preferences -
Converters, them click on 'LaTeX (plain) - HTML'. Then delete
'originaldir, needaux' from the Extra Flag box. Then try View HTML or
 Export HTML.

I did get by though with only removing the originaldir-flag.
When I removed the needaux flag, my references were forgotten.

I can do what I want now, but there are still there are a few
quirks remaining, which might probably be easily corrected:

 - View HTML works, Export to HTML does not. Instead of the pngs
   it only shows the ALT-text
Of course I can just view and save the content from firefox

 - pngs included in the original Lyx-files are not present

Greetings,
 H.Peter

Re: Update to: [announce] LyX150svn builds for Windows

2006-12-20 Thread gumm

Hi, LyXers

I fixed some bugs and changed a lot in the installer, here's the
changelog:

https://developer.berlios.de/project/shownotes.php?release_id=11890

have other people been successful with this installer ?

I tried the previous version, and the current one. But
 - lyx.bat just opens a dos-box, immediately closes it again and dies.
 - lyx.exe returns the spartanic error message:
This application has failed to start, because the applicatioon
configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix
this problem.

I reinstalled it, restarted the machine - to no avail.

Previous versions of LyX run ok on my machine
- 1.37 (very well)
- 1.43 (unsatisfactory regarding instant preview).

Greetings,
 H.Peter

Re: Can LyX handle large files ?

2006-11-10 Thread gumm

A final word on the situation with LyX and large files:

I deinstalled LyX 1.4.2 and 1.4.3 and went back to LyX 1.3.7 and the
problems essentially disappeared. I conclude that several bugs must have
been introduced in going from 1.3 to 1.4

+ In 1.3.7 I can start editing immediately. After some time
instant preview kicks in and I can happily continue editing
and scrolling while seeing the nice snippets.

- In 1.4.3, shortly after loading the file, everything freezes
(LyX not responding) for 3-4 minutes. Even after that waiting
time, instant preview snippets are only shown for the current page.
Scrolling is almost impossible, since it only works by half a page
at a time, then waiting several seconds for the next snipets, then
the next half page, etc.. Essentially impossible to move around.

A second bug that I had almost gotten used to in 1.4.x, but now I recall
that it had not been present in 1.3.x:

+ In 1.3.7, after changing some math, and after leaving the math
environment, the snippet is correctly updated instantly.

- In 1.4.2 and in 1.4.3 it often happens that I edit some math,
leave the environment and the old snippet is still shown. I must
enter the math environment again, just move the cursor a bit and
leave the environment again, before the snippet is correctly updated.
I recall that another user has reported this in this list, too.

I admit that I have the usual amount of math in my paper, but I should not
need to apologize for that. I use xy-pic a lot to draw commutative
diagrams. My paper has some 65 pages by now and I to my amazement, I found
1590 (1-5-9-0) pngs in
   \Lokale Einstellungen\Temp\lyx_tmpdir3332a02116\lyx_tmpbuf0

Re: Can LyX handle large files ?

2006-11-07 Thread gumm

So to avoid the problems, turn off Instant preview.

Sorry to say, but the instant preview facility is the reason I came to LyX
and have been sticking with LyX happily since its been available for
Windows..
I am quite fluent in LaTeX and without the possibility of instant
previewing I

would have equally happily stayed with WinEdt.

The main reason for using instant preview is that I am using the xy-pic
package.

I have written a manual of how to use it from within LyX , see
http://www.mathematik.uni-marburg.de/%7Egumm/LyX/xypic/xypic.pdf
From the screenshots, you can also see that the LyX Math editor alone
is not

of much use when using xy-pic.

So any help is appreciated. But the advice to turn instant preview off is
equivalent to saying quit LyX.

Then you can try:
* Use an older version of LyX (1.3.7 ?)
* Split your document into several parts

hope any of this helps.
/Christian

PS. It'd be even better if you could help us discover *why* it's so slow
so that it can be fixed, but unfortunately I don't have any ideas on this.
If you are interested in helping, you could however contact the
developers' list and ask if there's any kind of debugging information you
can give them.

lyx-devel AT lists.lyx.org

I would be happy to help with finding the bug, thats why I send a copy
of this to the devel-list.

Splitting the document into parts would only be a crutch, since I often
need to manage references

to earlier theorems, to equation numbers, etc..

I could imagine a feature like folding away a section, so the heading
would be shown but the

section is only opened when you double-click on the section heading.

Another possibility, I could imagine, is making the generated pngs
resident, so they need not be
generated again when I start lyx with the same document next time. One
problem, however, is
that I am working on the same document at work during the day, and at
home in the evening.

(By the way, the reported behaviour is the same on both computers. It
could not only be faulted
to csrssexe, since during the 3.5 min. of LyX not responding the
process manager only credits

25% to csrss.exe and 75% to lyx.exe )

I am indeed considering reinstalling some old version of LyX, although
this is like withdrawing my

chips from LyX ...

would have equally happily stayed with WinEdt.

PS. It'd be even better if you could help us discover *why* it's so slow
so that it can be fixed, but unfortunately I don't have any ideas on this.
If you are interested in helping, you could however contact the
developers' list and ask if there's any kind of debugging information you
can give them.

Can LyX handle large files ?

2006-11-06 Thread gumm
Hi,

i am writing a math document in LyX and as the document gets longer, it
takes lyx longer and longer to get started.

Today I measured the time - it takes 3 min and 35 seconds before Lyx
allows me to start the first editing steps. Until that essentially
everything freezes. The Task-manager shows that lyx.exe and csrss.exe are
taking up 99-100% of CPU-time. Lyx takes between 70 and 80% and csrss
takes the rest.
(I am running XP on a 2.4 GHz with 1024 MB)

I am using Lyx 1.4.3-4. and have instant preview activated. Even after
that long starting perid, I have to wait several seconds for each
screenfull that I am trying to scroll, apparently since instant preview is
always preparing the png-files. So I am asking myself - if after 3:35 min
these png-files have not been prepared, what has Lyx been doing all the
time ?

But my question is more serious than that - will Lyx be able to deal with
my document as it gets larger than the 63 pages of pdf that I have now. I
assume that I will run up to about 100 pages in the end. Will that turn
out to be too much for Lyx ?

Best regards,

Instant-Preview not working - How to troublecheck

2006-07-10 Thread gumm
Hi fellow LyXers,

I am sure this must have been discussed here, but I could not
find it :-(

In my LyX 1.4.1 for Windows XP, instant preview stopped working.
I know it is installed, since I previously used it.
I depend on this feature since I use lots of diagrams (xypics etc).

In my LyX document, the Tools/Preferences/Graphis/Instant Preview
Chooser is set to On ... but nothing happens with my formulae.

pdf-generation works without problems, so it appears not to be
a LaTeX error. Besides, the old documents which used to look so
neat in LyX, are now - well just LaTeX commands - like in ultraedit.

I have known the problem Stacia and Paul are reporting,
and I agree with Paul, that one can easily live with it.

Still, I could imagine that one could provide key command,
prompting LyX or instant preview to do a refresh - either
for the current editing window or for the whole document.

You're not doing anything wrong. A brief delay before processing a
formula would not be unreasonable; I not infrequently lurch out of a
math inset before I'm done editing it (hit the space bar one time too
many coming out of a subscript, for instance), and have to dive right
back in. A deliberate (brief) delay would save some wasted
processing. What you and I are experiencing, however, does not seem
to be a planned delay (or at least not solely that), since some insets
convert almost immediately and others sit around for quite a while in
their raw state.

When I open up a document sometimes I have trouble with the instant
preview too, especially with linguistics trees and stuff. I couldn't
seem to reproduce the problem with my math paper and subscripts (given
a couple seconds they all turned into the instant preview version).

Instant preview is doing running latex each time it updates, so if you
have a lot of insets (and some of them require more than average
processing by latex), it's not surprising that the initial conversions
might take a while. That said, I run into the same problem of insets
waiting for Godot when I open a document that I do when editing.

It's a bit distracting, but IMHO not a major problem.

Cheers,
/Paul

XY-Pic and LyX

2006-02-17 Thread H. Peter Gumm
Hi all,

rumors are that LyX 1.4 is not going to support XY-Pic
anymore. I cannot believe that the developers are serious
about this. If they were, the reasons for me to use LyX
would be gone. To name these reasons specifically, they
are:
  Instant-preview
  XY-Pic
and, last but not least Uwe's installer, which makes it
so easy to get LyX up and running under Windows.

Ironically, the two bugs that are reported in bugzilla
regarding XY-Pic can be circumvented. I have just found
two easy solutions and documented them in a new chapter
Hacks of my manual Using XY-Pic in LyX at
 http://www.mathematik.uni-marburg.de/~gumm/LyX/xypic/xypic.pdf

(The html-translation - supplied by Stephen Harris - has not
yet been updated.)

Let the developers know, that there is no demand for a
new version if is less than the existing one.

of the first is that label p will be shifted to the right, of the second that
it is
shifted to the left. Use as many "\ " as desired. "\hskip" and
"\hskip" will work likewise.

I wrote this article

as my first LyX-experiment - and that happened just a few weeks ago. Until
yesterday,
when Uwe pointed the wiki to it,, there was no external link to it. Now it
waits for
the google bots to pay it a visit. If you want to increase its rank, thanks.

Re: lyxwin136-small-04 and instant preview

2005-12-02 Thread H. Peter Gumm
Uwe, thanks for correcting the instant-preview glitch in your installer.

In my eyes, the installer is a great step ahead to make LyX popular amongst
Windows-Users who are typically not willing to install all sorts of auxiliary
programs (MinGW,Imagemagick, ...) before being able to try out a new unknown
application. Thanks for the great work!

I have the following suggestions for improvement, some may concern the
installer, some LyX itself:

- I am using LyX with slightly larger screen fonts than in the
default configuration. (Getting old.) Unfortunately, the math
formulas displayed by instant preview dont scale correspondingly,
they remain in the small fonts.

- Generating pdf-files, one obtains rather ugly bit-mapped fonts, until
one finds the trick (in the FAQs) of changing the fonts size to ae
in Document-Layout. Why not making this the default from the beginning ?

- I typically start LyX by doubleclicking on a .lyx-file. This opens LyX with
the file as expected. When the document is more or less in final form, I
scrutinize the the dvi-file for error. Unfortunately:

= each C-d starts a new instance of Yap. This means that each time I have to
adapt Yap again by enlarging fonts, etc.

= Going back to LyX I sometimes do it by doubleclicking the .lyx-file again.
This opens a new LyX on the same file. At the end I discover that I have
several LyXes open on the same file. Oops!! Which one do I want to save now
?

== How about an warning message when opening LyX on a file that is already
open in LyX. This behaviour is common in most editors.

Thanks for all the advices to my mail. Most of the problem
solutions I knew, my point was to suggest making the default
behaviour for the windows version of LyX reasonable without
the need to tweak the system and to scan the FAQs.

On the unsolved points

Helge Hafting wrote:

I need instant preview because I am using xypic extensively.
As my first LyX-project I wrote a manual on how to use xypic in LyX:
 http://www.mathematik.uni-marburg.de/~gumm/LyX/xypic/xypic.pdf
Without instant preview for xy-figures I would not see a compelling
reason for myself to use LyX. I guess I would have used AuCTeX,
TeXMacs or just stayed with WinEdt.

The bitmapped fonts are ok - the problem is the broken acrobat
reader so many uses. Printing the pdf will actually be fine. Many
 people don't make pdf's - they don't need a different default.

I threw away the new Acrobat Professional and reinstalled the older
one Acrobat 5.0. It is much faster, has everything I need and its
menu structure is better organized. I hear from many people who did
likewise.

Use update dvi instead then. It updated the file, and your dvi
viewer will then reload the new file automatically. (If it doesn't,
 then surely
it has a button or menu for doing that.)

C-d is the default action from the View-menu. I just suggest that S-C-d would
be a better default

= Going back to LyX I sometimes do it by doubleclicking the .lyx-file again.
This opens a new LyX on the same file. At the end I discover that I have

Don't do that - it is an approach that doesn't work with lyx. Switch
to the running lyx instead - it isn't hard to do on windows.

Well, thanks for telling. However, this happens unintentionally. In the Windows
programs I am used to, this never causes a problem. Why should I have a problem
with LyX ?

It is common in most editors _in windows_, which isn't the main
platform for lyx. Still, it can be done if you can interest a developer

Yes, if you want to make LyX popular under Windows, this should be adapted.
Also, it would be nice if C-v from the Windows Clipboard would work. It took
me a while to find the LyX-equivalent Edit- Paste external selection

That said, LyX is a great system and I'll keep advertising it.

lyxwin136-small-04 and instant preview

Is the new installer meant to install everything
Lyx needs for instant preview to work ?

After

- doing a Reconfigure
- restarting LyX

instant preview still does not work.
What is missing ?

Unwanted new paragraph after change to embedded math

2005-11-01 Thread gumm

When I mark some text and change it into embedded math
(Insert-Math-Embedded Formula or hitting C-m)
LyX starts a new paragraph right after that selection. Is this
a bug, or how can I stop LyX from doing that ?

With instant-preview activated, the new paragraph break also
shows up in the LyX window, otherwise only in the dvi-file.

I am running LyX 1.3.6-1 under Windows.

LyX and xypic

2005-10-28 Thread H. Peter Gumm
I am using xypic with LyX 1.3.6-1 for Windows.
Angus Leeming kindly showed me how to do this:

Place usepackage{xy} into the preamble and enter the
  xycode, e.g.
  \xymatrix{A \ar[r] B}
into the lyx editor, then mark it and hit C-S-m.

This works with most of what I need from xypic, but not with
arrows that are bent upwards or downwards, e.g. when I replace
\ar[r] with
\ar@/^/[r]
or
\ar@/_/[r]
or
\ar@/^1pc/[r]

Somehow, mathed does not interpret these key-sequence
correctly.

Any ideas, what to do ?
