RE: Installing new class. cls files
Can anyone help me out here? I’m trying to install a class file for ASME journals using Miktex console. Both miktex2.9 and miktex-console are registered in my program list. However when I click on Miktex console I just get a message saying Miktex console is already running. Haven’t a clue why this is happening or what to do except reinstalling Miktex but concerned it will happen again. Installing Lyx and Miktex2.9. for Windows 10
Dear lyx users, I need your help. Can you advise me on the best way to install these 2 programs and explain the error I get using the versions of Miktex2.9 and lyx 2.3.5 I have installed. I have downloaded basic-miktex-20.6.29-x64.exe and then run the basic miktex installer (64 bit) version. I have followed that by installing lyx 2.3.5 using the lyx basic installer for windows 7 and later. Before proceeding further there was a cautionary note saying I need to instal a Tex distribution. I assume that this would be satisfied if have installed Miktex correctly. I then followed the wizard installation 2.3.52. I missed the start menu request as I don’t know what choice to make. I have a problem when I get to latex distribution, because there is a reference to the file latex.exe and request for its path. I have ticked ‘Dont use latex’ and then ticked instal. Running the installed version of lyx I get a the message ‘the exernal program pplatex finished with an error’. It is recommended that I fix the erro in the xternal progam. Very helpful? Can anyone help me out. I have found a way to fix this issue, however it will only be available in LyX 2.4. In upcoming LyX 2.3 releases the option to start LyX from the finish page will be deactivated to avoid confusion. This recent version has screwed me up. It offers no real advantages and annoyingly won’t allow spaces in file names as part of the file location. The 2.1 version allows it. Bloody nuisance and for what possible reason. I also use palatino fonts which I find very attractive only to find they are no longer available. So can anyone tell me how I can incorporate these fonts. Why on earth did the lyx developers drop it? have done it years ago. I’m 75 now and am weary of learning new operating
systems. Ive used windows from the beginning. Something I’m familiar with and
works for me. So forgive me, my life left is too short for such considerations.

observations. I had been using lyx 2.2 version successfully in my review
article. So the bibtex and referencing worked perfectly as wells as the
nomenclature listing. Furthermore my version of lyx is tolerant of spaces in
flienames etc. It is only the recent version that doesn’t accept spaces. I
am aware of errors in formatting references in the bibtex file which stops the
conversion. Now for some unknown reason the conversion to pdf file works but
doesn’t contain the reference list. What has happened to my Miktex without my
doing anything whatsoever? It turns out that Miktex gets up dated without the
user knowing and that’s what might happened. Many thanks for your comments and
observations. It is much appreciated. I will cary on with review article using
my prest version of lyx . There is not much to be done. Then I will reinstall
Miktex and download the most recent version of Lyx. I will keep you informed of
progress.

There are leading spaces within {}.
Generally it looks untidy, if only for hyphenated titles, not something
I would send out when asking for help.
BTW, not everybody is impressed by spaces in file names.
And what is really irritating, not only is this not a MWE, but if you
had bothered to construct one, by removing everything but the offending
item (ie reference in the BIB file) you would have seen this yourself.

database of references in all my lyx files that cite references.
Upto now I have had no problems. I usually generate a pdf file in the lyx
document conversion. Now for some unknown reason when converting a lyx file toa
pdf file or any other file the reference list is missing in the document
conversion and the reference in the text are not recognised and appear as [?].
I have no idea what has caused the problem. Why it was working before and not
now since as far as I am aware I have done nothing. It happens on all my lyx
files. I attach a simple example lyx file, the latex file and the pdf
conversion file and the bib reference file. I would be very grateful if someone
could shed some light as to what is going on. Its a really annoying. I am
writing a review article using lyx which is about 6o pages long

When I compile your MWE, I get both references printed, but the second
reference is garbled and causes a warning message in the LaTeX log. It appears
that the citation was copied from a PDF file and pasted into the BibTeX
database (either directly or through a program such as JabRef). If you open the
.bib database in a plain text editor and cursor through the title of the Tian &
Ahmad paper, you'll see that the first two letters of "flows" count as one
character (due to kerning in the PDF file). Similarly, the two f's in
"different" are actually one character.
There's probably a smarter way to fix it, but all else failing you can run
through the database and retype anything that generates a complaint in the
LaTeX log.

Same here, on MS-Windows with MikTeX. As an alternative to Paul's suggestion,
you might set the language coding to utf8 (in LyX: Document / Settings /
Language / other)

I have used bibtex generated bibliography with access to an appropriates bibtex
database of references in all my lyx files that cite references.
Upto now I have had no problems. I usually generate a pdf file in the lyx
document conversion. Now for some unknown reason when converting a lyx file toa
pdf file or any other file the reference list is missing in the document
conversion and the reference in the text are not recognised and appear as [?].
I have no idea what has caused the problem. Why it was working before and not
now since as far as I am aware I have done nothing. It happens on all my lyx
files. I attach a simple example lyx file, the latex file and the pdf
conversion file and the bib reference file. I would be very grateful if someone
could shed some light as to what is going on. Its a really annoying. I am
writing a review article using lyx which is about 6o pages long

When I compile your MWE, I get both references printed, but the second
reference is garbled and causes a warning message in the LaTeX log. It appears
that the citation was copied from a PDF file and pasted into the BibTeX
database (either directly or through a program such as JabRef). If you open the
.bib database in a plain text editor and cursor through the title of the Tian &
Ahmad paper, you'll see that the first two letters of "flows" count as one
character (due to kerning in the PDF file). Similarly, the two f's in
"different" are actually one character.
There's probably a smarter way to fix it, but all else failing you can run
through the database and retype anything that generates a complaint in the
LaTeX log.

Same here, on MS-Windows with MikTeX. As an alternative to Paul's suggestion,
you might set the language coding to utf8 (in LyX: Document / Settings /

during creation of a Markdown converter in LyX I noticed some behavior,
which messes up the final output.
- created a new File Format 'Markdown' (as 'Document format' and 'With
TeX fonts:' = 'PDF (XeTex)' <-- side note: using 'PDF (pdflatex)'
would result in UTF-8 encoding errors during later conversion with
pandoc error "pandoc: Cannot decode byte…")
- created a new Converter Definition 'LaTeX (XeTeX) -> Markdown', with
converter command 'pandoc --wrap=none -f latex -t markdown -o $$o $$i'
(results below are also the same when using 'LaTeX (plain) ->
Markdown' as Converter)
- used this converter to export as Markdown
This basically works, and when I have an algorithm included in the LyX
file, the export still finishes, but has a fault in the output.
The intermediate .tex temp file created by LyX, during exporting to
markdown, has the two lines

which in the final markdown file look like

This causes problems when people receiving the Markdown file then try
to convert them to PDF, as the code is like that not correctly rendered
as program code.
When manually exporting the .lyx as 'PDF (XeTex)' the resulting file
does not have the problem, the output is one line

which in the markdown file (generated using same command as in my new
LyX Converter: "pandoc --wrap=none -f latex -t markdown -o
"minimal-example.md" "minimal-example.tex") results in the correct
output, which gets handled as code:

This is Lyx 2.3.2 on Debian Linux and I would be happy if someone could
tell me how to get this generator running with the expected output of

Thankyou for the feedback but it just sounds like a dialogue between Alexand
and Jurgen. I am not sure but are you are referring to something within the
software of Lyx and therefore a bug. From what you are saying its with a temp
file that’s created during the conversion. So can you explain why this error is
occurring now and not before. What do you suggest I do? Is it a bug that’s just
appeared in the lyx I have installed and not generally the case. So maybe you
would suggest reinstalling lyx 2.2 or the most recnt version. Grateful for you
feedback

Thx for first suggestions, but isn't the real point, that LyX does
different .tex exports, depending on if it is an intermediate temporary
file, or manually done?
Shouldn't it be always the same, or shouldn't there at least be a
possibility to force the one or other option?
Working around (IMHO) weird LyX behavior with additional scripts does
not really sound like the way to achieve the normal result, in my view…
If I only new at least which kind of .tex export mode LyX uses for
intermediate files, I would at least know where to try more tuning of
its behavior.

Latex conversion to lyx
Grateful for your help. I am using lyx 2.2. I have used lyx to produce pdf document and the corresponding latex file. I need to be able to generate the pdf file from the latex file I have created using lyx. Unfortuanely in importing the latex file into lyx I get an error message ‘an error occurred when running tex2lyx -f ‘. I have absolutely no dea what to do. The user-defined shortcuts are not saved in cua.bind, but in
user.bind, which is in your personal LyX directory, in the bind subfolder.
You can even directly copy the following to this file (and restart LyX):
\bind "M-I" "command-alternatives in-ipa ; ipa-insert"

Ok now I'm really confused. LyX shows the C-x i binding but cua.bind doesn't. But as least C-c works. Have I messed up by defining C-x i when C-x means "cut". In that case what prefix can I use (in Emacs terms) to define my own extended shortcuts? But how can I have messed up when cua.bind only shows C-x and no other C-x plus something bindings? Dear Lyx Users I have written a very large article in Lyx for publication in a scientific journal which will only accept the article as a latex file. Of course Lyx will generate a Latex file as well as a pdf file. I wanted to check that the Latex file is acceptable to Lyx. Unfortunately I get an error window Lyx insetP saying 'Unknown parameter name'. So what does that mean? Can anyone help. Most grateful. Does that mean I will encounter problems using the latex to produce pdf files direct. It would seem odd that Lyx wont read the latex file it produces! Regards Mike Reeks

Hi, I have a set of documents that together make up a book. I would like to make the set of documents (100 in all) into a template that can be used for writing other books. Could anyone tell me if the locations of the documents are relative or fixed please? inter-item and inter-paragraph spacing
I have a document which almost entirely consists of nested enumerated lists. The problem is that the vertical spacing between paragraphs and items in an enumerated list is too close together. I have tried to remedy this in Document > Settings > Text Layout by using the vertical space button but that doesn't seem to have any effect. In the same dialogue box if I set line spacing to double I almost get what I want except that individual paragraphs are double spaced. What I really want is that everything is "double spaced" except for the lines in an individual paragraph. Can someone please help me? I'm new to LyX. Thanks in advance Mike

I presume the document class of the child is not changed by the master document because: a) the text formatting options (e.g. Chapter) are not available in the child document b) the document class in the child document remains set to 'article' c) in the produced pdf file the chapter heading of the child document is set to 'standard' text. Weird template request
I have Lyx 2.0.6 on Mac Lion 10.8. I am using Lyx to author novels. My problem is: When I open a Lyx document that has been saved previously, receive the following message: "The document /Users/mike/Documents/Books in Production/Templates/Lyx Novel Layout Template/Front Matter/Front Matter.lyx does not yet exist. Do you want to create a new document?" If I create a new document then , when I save the document and close it, the next time I open it I receive the same message. However, if I choose not to create a template then, after pressing the 'cancel' button around fifty times, then the document opens without a template. If I then close Lyx I receive a message telling me the document was not saved and that it has been saved in a 'emergency' format. I can't find anything in my document settings or in the program preferences that point to a template file. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
"search and replace button" moves
Hallo, Lyx-Users, I had several times a problem with the advanced "search and replace" function. I don't know why (perhaps because the cursor is sometimes in a math environment) but the sidebar where I can click "Search", "Replace" and "Replace all" sometimes moves up and down (the buttons don't rest at one place). I wanted to replace a letter (T in math mode) by another letter (S), but not at all places. So I searched through my document. I don't want to look after every click if the mouse cursor is still on the search button. So because of the moves of the buttons I accidently clicked the "Replace all" button. Unfortunately Lyx replaced a few hundred letters, most of them, where I didn't want to. I couldn't get them all back by CTRL+Z, so I decided to work on with my last saved version. Is it possible to use shortcuts within advanced "Search and replace" mode to make the searches so that I don't have to click? Thanks a lot for every help! Mike

I'm sorry, but I don't want to paste it here: It's my unfinished diploma
thesis.
The crashes were with advanced search. I searched a \rho^*. One of it was
found and the others weren't. But when I saw the source code I realized
that there was once a \rho{}^* (or something similar) and the others were
like \rho_5^*.
So I understand why it didn't find my \rho's but I don't know why it took
such a long time.
I finally solved the problem by installing the last system it worked fine:
That was Lubuntu 11.10 with Lyx 2.0.0 and that works very fine (searches
are faster and compiling did hardly no crashes). Perhaps it's sometimes
better to use older versions.

Hi everybody, I installed Lyx on a new machine (because my old laptop had an display error). But unfortunately If I use the "search and replace"-function Lyx sometimes runs forever even if the next hit would be in the next line. Sometimes the compiling crashes, too. I think it is not even possible to stop the searching. (This is especially a problem because I have to finish my diploma thesis in two weeks.) I use a 2*1,5 GHz, 1.8 GB RAM on a Lubuntu 12.04. Stop Lyx compiling
Hi, Lyx-Users, is there a possibility to stop Lyx when it is compiling. Today I had several times the problem that I wanted to make a picture with tikz and made some mistake in the Lyx-Code (forgot the semicolon in the end of a command). Unfortunately Lyx doesn't return a message that there is a mistake and is compiling forever. I can not even stop the program after that. As I remember Kile was also not able to stop the compiling of such a "program", but there is a button to stop the compiling. Can I stop Lyx when it is compiling? I didn't find anything inside the tutorials about that theme. And google seems not to find anything, too. Thanks! Mike
Utter newbie with LyX 1.5.2 cannot find View::DVI
12 Jan 2012 I installed LyX 1.5.2 about an hour ago, onto my Lenovo ThinkPad x61S Windows Seven; full package went in smoothly. Running the Tutorial: Section 2.1.1 --- 1. Open a new file with File::New: worked great 2. Type a sentence: worked great 3. Save your document with File::SaveAs: worked great 4. Run LaTeX to create a dvi file with View::DVI ^^ no such thing in my installation. My View menu has no DVI menu item, it has only these: Open all Insets Close all insets View Source Update HTML Open Document PDF (dvipdfm) PDF (pdflatex) PDF (ps2pdf) Postscript Toolbars ...and some source file windows. line break in math mode
Hi all,
I'm wondering how to make a line break in the discharged math mode. I tried
it with Strg+Enter but then there where 3 new boxes in the new line. It
looked like the eqnarray-environment-boxes and it didn't work fine:
It should look similar to this:
f(x)={z\in Z:there is an y\in Y and functions g,h\in F
such that g(x)=y and h(y)=z}
But at the moment (with Strg+Enter) it looks like
f(x)={z\in Z:there is an y\in Y and functions g,h\in
F

Does anybody know how to do this.

repeating environment label
Hi, Lyx-Users, I want to repeat the number of a theorem. I searched for "repeat environment" in the mail archive " http://www.mail-archive.com/search?l=lyx-users%40lists.lyx.org&q=repeat+environment"; but I only find how to do this for the special frame environment. Is it only possible to do it with Tex-Code where I have to know the name of the environment or is there a possibility to solve it with real Lyx. Thanks for your help! Mike
Search within math mode
Hallo, Lyx-users, I work with Lyx 2.0.0. now. I have heard that it would be possible to search within the math mode with Lyx 2.0.0. But it didn't work here I think (or I made a mistake): I had some text with the greek letter phi (lyx code: Ctrl+M \phi) I am not able to find that phi afterwards. If I search for "phi" I can't find anything. Did I do anything wrong? Thanks for your help! nearly solved: problem with language settings

I had the problem, that some of my environments appeared in the wrong language
and I couldn't change the language all at ones.
Now I want to explane how to solve the problem:
See how lyx names the environment in the source code.
For example there's a code like the following generated by Lyx (be sure you can
see the hole source code: see check mark on the right side):

If you want that remark is written in another language, for example in German
add your own code (Document->Settings->preambel) as follows:

This works in most cases. It didn't work for the Lyx code
\newtheorem{thm}[thm]{Theorem}
and I think this is because thm has different meanings: At first it is an
environment and second it has something to do with the package name (amsthm).
When I made the same with thm my computers (tested at two different computers
with 2 different OS) computed until I stopped them.
When I took the thm in []-brackets out of my code
\newtheorem{thm}{Satz}
Lyx gave some “error message”.

In the "User specified Latex commands" part of the source code I overwrote the
settings of Lyx (to be precise someone made that for me, I can't do). I don't
think this the "Spirit of Lyx"-way to solve the problem. On the other hand I
don't really know to do so.
Isn't there a nice way to solve this. And if not, how can I overwrite the
settings of the "remark"-environment which I want to be "Bemerkung" and
"example" which I want to be "Beispiel".

There might be two reasons: missing translation for these environments
or still English.

This means that there are both English and German text parts in your
document and German (as the last in the list) is the default language.

Yes. But sometimes you need to do it twice (or even more times),
because LyX does not change the language in all "nested" environments.
With the normal settings, you will still see the blue underline in
these environments/boxes/insets and the status bar might show the
"different than default" language.
It might also be the other way round: the inset is English but the
content German (then you won't see the blue underline).
I would look at the TeX source (View>Source) or at the *.lyx file in a
text editor.

At first I wrote my text in english and then decided to write it in German. Of

"Theorem").
So I changed language by "Document->Settings->language->language:German". But
unfortunately some of the environments appear in English (for example "example"
and "remark") while others appear in German (for example "Beweis", which is the
German word for "proof").
I saw in the Code that Lyx still uses the options english and ngerman both:

Is it possible to change the language for all environments?
I tried some things (I don't know if this helps):
When I want to change the language to a really new one(for example change it to
"Africaans") Lyx creates a Latex Code with
\documentclass[oneside,english,ngerman,africaans]{scrbook}
When I change it back to German "africaans" doesn't appear anymore but english
is still in the preamble:
\documentclass[oneside,english,ngerman]{scrbook}
I think this is because I used the "example"-environment the first time when my
language settings were "english" and used the "proof"-environment the first
time when my language-settings were "German".

Problem with a graph and its title
Hallo,
I wanna make a graph and give it a title, say "name". I think this name is
written under the graph normally. So I think creating a figure must be the
right thing.
So I clicked Insert->Float->figure and gave the figure the "name" and inserted
the graph.
But I have 2 problems:
1st: The "name" is centered, that means in the middle of the paper to the left
and right. On the other hand, my figure is on the left side.
I don't know how I can center the figure, too. I read the handbook (German
version) and there were some hints, especially for importing existing figures,
but not a lot of hints how to create such a figure by yourself.
2nd: I wanted to create an undirected graph and choose to do it with an
x-y-pic-matrix with this code within the math mode:
\xymatrix{a\dir[dr]&b&c\\d&e&f}
That creates an xy-pic-matrix with 2 rows (because of the \\ command) and 3
rows (because of the 2-times & command).
\dir[dr] makes an arc to the element which is one step below (d for down) and
one element to the right (r for right). I used to write \dir@{-}[dr] instead of
\dir[dr] because that made an undirected edge instead of an arc. But that
doesn't work anymore; I don't know why.
Is there a better way to do that, for example with tikz, and is it easy to use
that within lyx? If not, how can I create simple edges in that
xy-pic-environment and place the title under the figure.

table alignment
Hi: I'm trying to format my table to align on decimal places. I've figured out how to align the table on the decimal places and use multi-column to keep the non-numeric cells normal. However, my last column is wider, or aligned farther to the right than all the other columns. Does anyone know how to fix this? thanks, Mike

instead of double) to keep my section spacing consistent. Is there a way I

resize table, caption
Hi:
I have tables that are too large to output to one table. I am trying to
make the tables fit one page and have found tips to use in
ERT \resizebox{0.95\textwidth}{!}{%
When I do this, the table is the right size. However, the caption of the
table no longer shows up. Is there a way to resize the table and have the
caption still work?

Help: Could not find LaTeX command for character '' (code point 0x2028)
I just imported a novel in plain text to LyX on my iMac. It looks fine but when I try to view the PDF it gives this error message: Could not find LaTeX command for character ' ' (code point 0x2028) It says changing the encoding to UTF8 could help, but that's what I already chose. Hi I was previously able (in version 1.5.6) to right-click on a minipage (or the little grey flag saying "Box (Minipage)") to get a little dialog box containing options for changing minipages. I no longer get this with my locally compiled version of Lyx 1.6. Take it for what you will. The point to the original poster was that LyX and LaTeX are powerful, well-used tools, and the difficulties he was having are likely in his setup or with his expectations. I followed your directions. you said (thanks for being so explicit ): That is, in Terminal, type: cd ~/Library/Application\ Support/LyX-1.5/ to get to the user directory. Then type: python /Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/configure.py to reconfigure. (Note that in this line there is no "/ui" before "configure".) I still did not have luck. Is this perhaps because i have placed my files in the wrong spot? Should the authesis.layout file i made be with all the other layout files? in Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/layouts/ instead of in username/Library/Application Support/Lyx-1.5/layouts ? And perhaps, these files (authesis.cls, aucas.clo, aut10.clo, auecon.clo) should not be in this location: users/username/library/texmf/tex/latex/authesis/ Once again, thank you very much. Thanks again. I took your advice. I located configure.py I opened
terminal, typed:
# cd /tmp/
then,
#python/library/applications/lyx.app/content/resources/configure.py
Then, I opened LyX, and tried to reconfigure. I got the same error
message that the configure did not work. Is it of interest that if I
go to, Tools->Tex Information, I see authesis under the list of
classes?

I updated my layout file to read:

# \DeclareLaTeXClass[authesis]{article (authesis)}
Format 4

Input article.layout
and I tried kpsewhich authesis.cls in the terminal. the response was
the location of the file. I noticed that when I tried texhash,
terminal told me that it was not writeable, so I tried sudo texhash
and it gave me the same response as kpsewhich. I still get the same
error message in LyX.

What I'd suggest is to try to run the reconfigure directly from
/users/username/libarary/Application Support/Lyx-1.5/. I.e., open a
terminal, go to that directory, and then run "python
/path/to/configure.py". If you can't figure out where that file is,
someone else will know. Anyway, you'll get more helpful error messages
then.

I've been having a lot of trouble installing a new class for LyX with
my mac. I am hoping to use LyX to write my doctoral dissertation. I
am trying to install the thesis class for my university, authesis.cls.
I have followed the directions, I believe, but am not getting the class to work.
I have placed these files (authesis.cls, aucas.clo, aut10.clo,
auecon.clo) in this location:
users/username/library/texmf/tex/latex/authesis/
i have placed a layout file (authesis.layout) at this location:
username/libarary/Application Support/Lyx-1.5/layouts
The layout file reads:
#% Do not delete hte line below; configure depens on this
# \DeclareLaTeXClass[authesis]{article (authesis)}
# Input general definitions
Input stdclass.inc
After doing this, I open terminal typed "texhash" and then quit terminal
I went to LyX, reconfigure and i get an error message that says, "The
system reconfiguration has failed. Default textclass is used but LyX
may not be able to work properly. Please reconfigure again if needed."
I close LyX, start it again, and then if I go to Document, Settings, I
do not see the authesis in the document class menu(and the number of
classes I have listed is now much smaller than before i tried to
install this class).
Can someone help? I would very greatly appreciate it! I am very new
to both LyX and my Mac.
