Re: Harvard style referencing

2008-02-12 Thread Jennifer Brookes
Thanks for all the help, I am using Linux, so its not a Miktex problem.
I have found that changing my article class to amsart seems to work,
keeping everything else the same, except there is a problem with the
'acknowledgement' section which can be remedied by changing it into a
section. It appears document class revtex4 isn't compatible with natbib.

Thanks

I'm not sure what OS and LaTeX distro you are using, so I'll try to be
as generic as possible. First, open a shell/command window and run
'kpsewhich agsm.bst'. If it displays a path, then you have style and
something else is wrong, but I'm pretty sure you'll get a null
response. In that case, you need to install the harvard-latex
package. With MiKTeX, use the package manager to install the package
named 'harvard'. The package manager will automatically update the
file database. With TeXLive, install the texlive-bibtex-extra package
(using your Linux distro's package manager, such as Synaptic). I'm
pretty sure the installation script will automatically update the file
name database. All else failing, you can download the harvard-latex
package from CTAN
install it yourself, then manually update the file database (by
running texhash). Run 'kpsewhich agsm.bst' again just to be sure
things went well, then retry compiling your document.

Hi,

I am having difficulty figuring out how to convert my references to
alphabetical (Harvard style) in preparation of an article. I have
been using lyx version 1.4.4, with document class article (REVTeX4),
citation style natbib (Author-year) and bibliography style agsm. When
I compile however, no references appear and there are question marks
where I would like the references to be. Before I was using natbib
(numerical) and bibliography style apsrev, which worked fine, can
anyone tell me the problem?

Many thanks
Jenny

You are mixing two ways of producing a bibliography. If you are using a BibTeX
bibliography (which you apparently do, judging from your screenshots), then
do not use "bibliography" paragraph style from the drop down menu. BibTeX is
formatting the bibliography for you, including the heading.

The two boxes you are talking about are the citation references and the
bibliography. You need both (please refer to the LyX documentation for
details).

> How do i remove the first line after the bibliography.?

If you don't want references, but only the bibliography, the use
\nocite{somecitekey} or \nocite* (the latter prints out the whole database).
LyX doesn't support this natively yet, so you have to use TeX mode.

Unfortunately, harvard.sty causes latex to crash if you use the memoir
class.

You also need to put

into the preamble (Document>Settings>LaTeX Preamble). Alternatively, and
perhaps better, enable Natbib under Document>Settings>Bibliography.

and bibliographies. This seems to be the bit still sketchy in the
documentation. Are there other documents you could point me at.
